Definitions
- the present invention relates to a display element with vanishing technology and a method for producing such a display element.
- Non-luminous transmissive display elements such as LCDs (LCD: Liquid Crystal Display; liquid crystal display), require backlighting to display the image.
- the task of the backlight is to illuminate the display element as uniformly as possible over the entire active area in order to produce a display that is as homogeneous as possible right up to the edge area.
- a display that is as bright as possible is achieved in that the alignment of a liquid-crystal layer of the display element in combination with the alignment of polarizing filters allows maximum transmission.
- a dark or black display content e.g. in the edge area, is achieved through minimal transmission, which, in contrast to self-illuminating displays, is always greater than zero.
- a display element can be arranged behind a design surface.
- Transmissive, decorative surfaces suitable for this application can be made of real material, such as wood, stone, leather, imitation leather, etc., as well as can also be manufactured using plastic or glass technology.
- the decoration is applied to the surface of a cover plate or alternatively to a separate film surface using printing technology.
- the decoration can be applied, for example, as a transmissive print or in the form of a perforated mask.
- US 2015/0036061 A1 describes a display device with a decorative layer formed in at least part of a viewing area.
- a display module of the display device operates and emits light through the decorative layer, the decorative layer appears transparent.
- the decorative layer is irradiated by ambient light and a decorative pattern of the decorative layer is visible.
- WO 2021/085524 A1 describes a display device for attachment to an object.
- the display device comprises a display unit having a display surface for displaying video data, a translucent decorative layer arranged on the side of the display surface and providing a decor that harmonises with the external appearance of the object, and a translucent one-way mirror layer interposed between the display unit and the decorative layer is arranged.
- a high-quality resolution of the display should be achieved through the structure of the decoration.
- the influence of a large number of parameters leads to impairments in image quality. These include the surface properties of the decoration, the use of a plastic surface panel that supports the decoration and requires a certain mechanical distance to the imaging display surface, the mechanical stability of the surface or the surface cover glass, and the assembly process of the display in relation to the surface. If necessary, a transparent touch sensor can be integrated, which can also lead to an impairment of the image quality.
- Another aggravating point for an authentic material representation is that the decoration should be carried out on the top surface facing the viewer in order to create a visually and haptically authentic overall experience.
- An important aspect in the realization of vanishing displays with a high-quality picture display is that the distance between the light exit from the display panel and the surface of the decoration is kept as small as possible.
- a display element has:
- a stabilizing assembly with a recess for receiving the display assembly; and - a decorative film attached to at least a top surface of the stabilizing assembly and extending across the display assembly recess, the stabilizing assembly mechanically stabilizing the decorative film.
- the solution according to the invention makes it possible to minimize the distance from the display to the decorative surface.
- a display surface can thus be inserted into a larger decorative panel while ensuring a high image quality and a high level of mechanical stability of the entire assembly.
- a special stabilization assembly is used to mechanically stabilize the decorative film.
- a display surface can thus be inserted into a larger decorative panel while ensuring a high image quality and a high level of mechanical stability of the entire assembly.
- a continuous decorative surface can be achieved.
- a decorative display insert in a pas-partout of a decorative trim panel will always have an annoying edge all around.
- the decor of such an insert part will not be able to be kept uniform or only with great difficulty, i.e.
- the decorative film is bonded, pressed or hot stamped onto the top of the stabilizing assembly fastened.
- the manner of attachment or application of the decorative film to the stabilizing assembly is within the skill of the art. All the methods mentioned are well suited for this purpose. In addition, they can also be used in the case of curved surfaces or free-form surfaces.
- the decorative film can first be deformed, for example by deep-drawing. The formed decorative film can then be bonded, pressed or hot stamped to the stabilizer assembly.
- a thickness of the decorative film is greater than 200 ⁇ m, preferably greater than 500 ⁇ m.
- the decorative film must also have sufficient stability in the display area. In addition to the choice of material for the decorative film, this stability can be achieved in particular by the thickness of the decorative film.
- a thickness of the decorative film is thinner in a display area that is over the display assembly than in a peripheral area that extends around the display assembly. This enables further optimization of image sharpness.
- the decorative film consists of two or more sheets. If the decorative film is not available in a sufficient thickness, a laminate of two or more films can also be used, for example, to achieve the necessary stability.
- a first film serves as a carrier film, a second film as a decorative film.
- the stabilizing assembly is plastic injection molded onto the decorative film.
- the decorative film can also be processed in a plastic injection molding process, for example placed as a film in a plastic tool and back-injected. This takes place in such a way that the plastic significantly supports the area of the decorative film outside the display area and the area of the display area is left out or minimized.
- the plastic injection molding outside the display area is thus designed as a stabilizing element.
- the display assembly is bonded to the decorative film and/or the stabilizing assembly.
- the display assembly placed in the recess of the stabilization assembly is preferably bonded at least to the decorative film by means of an optical bonding layer.
- An optically clear adhesive film OCA: optical clear adhesive
- LOCA liquid optical clear adhesive
- OCR optical clear resin
- a distance between the display panel and the decorative film is in the range of 500 pm to 1000 pm.
- a very good image quality is achieved by such a choice of the distance between the display surface and the decorative film, or more precisely between the light valves of the display panel and the decorative print of the decorative film.
- the display element has two or more display assemblies.
- the stabilization assembly has two or more recesses for accommodating the two or more display assemblies.
- the solution according to the invention also allows the realization of multi-displays. To do this, it is sufficient to provide several display areas or recesses for display assemblies. According to the invention, only the decorative film but no supporting components is located in the area of the recess.
- a method for producing a display element has the steps:
- the desired decorative film is applied to the stabilization assembly to mechanically stabilize the decorative film.
- At least part of the display assembly e.g. the backlight, or alternatively the entire display assembly, is then inserted into the corresponding recess of the stabilization assembly. In this way, the display element according to the invention can be easily manufactured.
- a display panel of the display assembly is applied to a backside of the decorative film. If the entire display assembly is not to be placed in the recess of the stabilizing assembly, the display panel without the backlight can be laminated to the back of the decorative film first. The resulting assembly is then mounted on the stabilizer assembly. The backlight is then mounted from behind against the display panel.
- the display assembly is bonded to the decorative film and/or the stabilizing assembly.
- Bonding can be accomplished, for example, with an optically clear adhesive film or a layer of liquid optically clear adhesive. Bonding the display assembly to the stabilization assembly results in further mechanical stabilization since the decorative film is not mechanically stressed by the weight of the display assembly.
- a display element according to the invention is preferably used to implement a display with vanishing technology, for example in a means of transportation or in a household appliance.
- the decoration can, for example, simulate a wood look, a carbon look or the look of a metallic surface.
