Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an impedance variator for a wind instrument .
  • the present invention also relates to a wind instrument including such an impedance-varying device; more particularly, the impedance-varying device according to the invention is specifically, but not exclusively, intended for a trumpet or a cornet.
  • the ligature consists of a flexible brass band but does not contain a permanent magnet. Furthermore, the ligature must be attached to the mouthpiece of the woodwind instrument.
  • the invention aims to remedy this state of affairs.
  • one objective of the invention is to provide an impedance variator that is easy to install on the wind instrument and very effective in reducing or even eliminating non-harmonic sounds.
  • a key objective is to offer a simple dimmer, with few parts or components.
  • a complementary objective is to offer an inexpensive impedance variator .
  • an impedance variator in the form of a brass tube enclosing a tubular portion or cylindrical of the wind instrument (excluding the mouthpiece), said impedance variator also being equipped with at least one permanent magnet.
  • the solution proposed by the invention is an impedance variator to limit or eliminate parasitic harmonics of a wind musical instrument, the impedance variator comprising at least one permanent magnet .
  • the impedance variator is remarkable in that it comprises a brass tube intended to surround a substantially tubular or cylindrical portion of the wind instrument and in that the impedance variator comprises a means for fixing the tube to said portion of the wind instrument, in which the fixing means comprises a plurality of worm screws each penetrating through the tube, the inner end of each worm screw bearing against the outer surface of the portion of the wind instrument , the penetration length of each worm screw inside the tube being adjustable, in which the worm screws are distributed or arranged on the circumference of the tube forming an angle between them of between 100° and 140°.
  • substantially tubular or cylindrical in relation to a portion of the wind instrument means that this portion has a tubular or cylindrical section, or is substantially like this, that is to say, this portion can be inscribed between two tubes of different diameters or two cylinders of different diameters.
  • a remarkable effect of the device according to the invention lies in the sound timbre which is improved in a particularly significant way.
  • this impedance variator integrates perfectly with the wind instrument and is visually difficult to detect.
  • this impedance variator is very easy and quick to disassemble , especially for transferring it to another wind instrument, as the brass is very close in color to the color of the wind instrument.
  • the impedance converter also called a "booster” due to its effect on the timbre, was tested at the C complaint de la Musique in Marseille and demonstrated exceptional qualities.
  • the effect of suppressing unwanted harmonic frequencies is immediate, and the impedance converter, or Booster according to the invention, facilitates more precise note attacks.
  • the sound is rounded out, and access to the bass and treble registers is greatly improved.
  • the impedance converter or booster was also tested, particularly on trombones, trumpets, and flutes, with musicians from the Toulon Opera and the Ad Libitum quintet.
  • the results and feedback were identical, that is to say, excellent, just like those from the Cotti de la Musique.
  • test data and their results are not presented here but are available on request.
  • the specific setting of the impedance selector is up to each musician (or their instrumentalist) to determine whether they want a brighter or softer sound, a higher or lower pitch, or a clearer or darker tone.
  • the impedance selector will be positioned at different points . places on the instrument and mounted more or less tightly against a wall of the instrument.
  • the terms “internal” and “external” are used to refer to a face, a side, an element etc. located inside or directed towards the inside of the brass tube and the term external to refer to a face, a side, an element etc. located outside or directed towards the outside of the brass tube.
  • the brass tube has a thickness of between 1 mm and 3 mm, preferably a thickness of 2 mm.
  • the fastening means comprises a plurality of worm screws, each penetrating through the tube, the inner end of each worm screw bearing against the outer surface of the portion of the wind instrument, the penetration length of each worm screw inside the tube being adjustable.
  • the fastening means further comprises at least one brass adjusting knob, fixed to the outer end of a worm gear , for adjusting the depth of penetration of the worm gear into the tube.
  • This worm gear or these worm gears also referred to as adjusting screws, come into contact with the walls of the portion of the wind instrument.
  • each worm gear has a brass adjustment knob at its outer end.
  • the worm screws are distributed or arranged on the circumference of the tube, forming an angle between them of between 100° and 140°, preferably an angle of 120°.
  • the worm gears are made of a non-metallic material, advantageously nylon.
  • the permanent magnet is fixed to the brass tube, on the outside of said tube.
  • the impedance variator according to the invention comprises a plurality of permanent magnets, distributed symmetrically all around the circumference of the brass tube.
  • the inner diameter of the brass tube is between 15 mm and 25 mm, preferably between 18 mm and 22 mm, while the length of the tube is between 15 mm and 35 mm.

  • the impedance variator 1 comprises, as an essential element , at least one permanent magnet 2 and a brass tube 3 - also referred to as a brass ring - intended to surround a substantially tubular or cylindrical portion of the wind instrument.
  • a means of fixing 5, 6 of the brass tube 3 on said portion of the wind instrument is necessary in order to fix the impedance variator 1 according to the invention on a portion of a wind instrument but this means of fixing 5, 6 does not cooperate with the other elements 2, 3 to achieve the primary purpose of the impedance variator 1, namely to eliminate parasitic sounds.
  • the fastening means 5, 6 comprises a plurality of worm screws 5 – also referred to as “ set screws” or “locking screws” – which enter dedicated holes in the brass tube 3 to make contact and bear against the external surface of the wind instrument portion .

  • the brass tube 3 advantageously features a leather lining, or possibly a lining of another non-metallic material such as cork, on its face opposite the wind instrument.
  • This lining not shown in the accompanying figures, primarily serves to protect the instrument from the brass tube 3, but it has been observed that this lining, particularly when made of leather, contributes to improving the sound.
  • This lining advantageously has a thickness of no more than one (1) millimeter, preferably less than 1 mm, and, according to a preferred design choice, 0.9 mm.
  • the adjustment knob(s) 6 is/are made of brass.
  • the worm gears 5 are advantageously made of a non-metallic material so as not to damage the wind instrument and not to disturb the output impedance of the instrument as well as the effects of the impedance variator 1.

  • the distribution of the upper worm gear 5 and the two pairs of worm gears 5 consists of an angular placement of 120° to each other so that the worm gears 5 are symmetrically arranged or distributed around the circumference of the brass tube 3.
  • the brass tube 3 is shorter and has only three worm screws 5, always arranged at an angle of 120° to each other.
