Definitions
- the present invention relates to an impedance variator for a wind instrument.
- the present invention also relates to a wind instrument including such an impedance variator, more particularly the impedance variator according to the invention is in particular, but not exclusively, intended for a trumpet or a cornet.
- Impedance variators are known in the state of the art such as:
- this impedance variator is no longer used at present but it required a modification of the instrument with drilling and welding.
- this impedance variator is used for wind instruments but it has a very large number of different materials that the musician must choose to obtain the desired sound. Furthermore, this impedance variator includes the assembly of two plates to each other with elastic bracelets, which is complex and visually unattractive.
- Document US 7220903 discloses an assembly for a wind instrument mouthpiece in which a retention plate with tabs conforms to the shape of the grooves present on the mouthpiece. This plate is adjustable by a screwing action to apply variable pressure to the base of the blade.
- the invention aims to remedy this state of affairs.
- one objective of the invention is to provide an impedance variator that is easy to install on the wind instrument and very effective in reducing or even eliminating non-harmonic sounds.
- An essential objective is to offer a simple drive, with only a few parts or components.
- a complementary objective is to propose an inexpensive impedance variator. Presentation of the invention.
- an impedance variator in the form of a brass tube separating at least two brass plates located at the two opposite ends of the tube, the variator being disposed or fixed on the wind instrument respectively against two wall portions of the wind instrument extending substantially parallel to one another, said impedance variator being also equipped with a permanent magnet.
- the solution proposed by the invention is an impedance variator to limit or eliminate the parasitic harmonics of a wind musical instrument, the impedance variator comprising at least one permanent magnet.
- the impedance variator is remarkable in that it comprises at least two brass support plates separated from each other by a brass tube, said tube comprising means for adjusting the distance between the two plates, and in that each of the two plates is intended to bear respectively against two wall portions of the wind instrument extending substantially parallel to one another
- a remarkable effect of the device according to the invention lies in the sound timbre which is improved in a particularly significant way.
- this impedance variator fits perfectly into the wind instrument and is visually difficult to detect, the brass being colored very close to the color of the wind instrument. [21 ] In addition, this impedance variator can be dismantled very easily and quickly, in particular to transfer it to another wind instrument.
- the impedance variator also called “booster” with regard to its effect on sound timbre, was tested at the Cotti de la Musique in Marseille and showed exceptional qualities.
- the feeling as to the suppression of parasitic harmonic frequencies is immediate and the impedance variator or Booster according to the invention facilitates the precision of the note attacks.
- the sound is rounded and access to the bass and treble registers is greatly facilitated.
- the particular setting of the impedance variator belongs to each musician insofar as the latter wants a sound that is more or less bright or more or less high. To do this, the impedance variator will be placed at different places on the instrument and mounted more or less tight against two opposite walls or branches (opposite) of the instrument.
- the impedance variator comprises a brass spar fixed to one end of the aforesaid tube, one of the said support plates being fixed to the spar. More precisely, this support plate is fixed under the spar.
- the impedance variator comprises three brass support plates, two of said support plates being fixed to the aforesaid spar while the last support plate is fixed at the end free of the above tube.
- the means for adjusting the distance between the support plates consists of a threaded axis mounted in the brass tube and an adjustment wheel mounted freely in rotation on the threaded axis to adjust this distance, advantageously the wheel is brass.
- the permanent magnet has a cylinder shape and is fixed against or on the aforesaid spar.
- the permanent magnet is mounted fixed between the aforementioned brass spar and the means for adjusting the distance between the support plates.
- the support plates comprise, on their faces resting against a portion of the instrument, a non-metallic lining, preferably this lining is made of leather or cork.
- This filling advantageously has a thickness of at most one (1) millimeter, preferably less than 1 mm and according to a preferred execution choice of 0.9 mm.
- the external surface of the brass plates, of the brass tube, possibly of the brass spar as well as of the adjustment wheel are varnished or platinized or plated with silver or gold, advantageously the platings in silver or gold with a thickness of 6 microns.
- the permanent magnet has an outside diameter of between 12 and 18 mm, preferably 15 mm, and a thickness of between 4 and 8 mm, preferably 6 mm.
- the present invention also relates to a wind instrument, preferably consisting of a trumpet or a cornet, having fixed between two wall portions of said wind instrument extending substantially parallel to each other a variator impedance as briefly described above.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic representation of an embodiment of an impedance variator according to the invention when the latter is in the low position, the adjustment wheel being in contact with the permanent magnet.
- FIG. 2 is a side view of the impedance variator represented in figure 1 .
- FIG. 3 is a top view of the impedance variator shown in Figure 1.

- the impedance variator 1 comprises a brass tube 2 at both ends of which are fixed two plates 3, 3 ', the brass tube 2 housing a means of adjustment 5, 6 of the spacing distance between the two 3, 3' plates.
- the impedance variator 1 has a brass spar 10 on which are fixed two 3’, 3” plates, instead of a single and unique plate.
- Each of the three 3, 3’, 3” plates has an identical shape and dimensions.
- a 3, 3' or 3" turntable is intended to bear against a portion of the wall of a wind instrument, which is why their shapes are adapted to that of the portion of the wall on which or against which they are brought to come in contact.
- a 3, 3’ or 3” plate has a substantially semi-cylindrical shape with a central part wider than the end parts.
- a 3, 3’ or 3” plate has a length of 18 mm (millimeters) for a maximum width of 12 mm.
- the height of a 3, 3’ or 3” plate is greater than 3 mm, more precisely equal to 3.3 mm.
- the inner face of the plates 3, 3', 3" that is the face intended to come into contact with a portion of the instrument, is provided with or provided with a non-metallic lining 11, preferably leather or cork.
- This gasket 11 has, according to the embodiment chosen to illustrate the invention, a thickness of 1.5 mm.
- a material other than leather or cork - such as for example a plastic material, rubber or elastomer - but leather and cork has the advantage of facilitating the support of the plates 3, 3 'and 3” without damaging the instrument, while being aesthetic.
- leather and cork has the advantage of facilitating the support of the plates 3, 3 'and 3” without damaging the instrument, while being aesthetic.
- leather and cork has the advantage of facilitating the support of the plates 3, 3 'and 3” without damaging the instrument, while being aesthetic.
- leather and cork has the advantage of facilitating the support of the plates 3, 3 'and 3” without damaging the instrument, while being aesthetic.
- leather and cork has the advantage of facilitating the support of
- the brass tube 2 has a length of 15 mm and an outer diameter of 5 mm bored to 4 mm (internal diameter).
- This tube 2 being hollow by nature, it houses a threaded pin 5, fixed to the brass spar 10, having an external diameter of 4 mm so as to cooperate with the internal diameter of the brass tube 2.
- This threaded pin 5 always has according to one embodiment, a length of 24 mm.
- the adjustment means 5, 6 of the distance between the two end plates 3 and 3 'or 3 and 3' consists, according to one embodiment, of a rotary knob 6 (or free in rotation) allowing to raise or lower the brass tube 2 away from the permanent magnet 8 or on the contrary against the permanent magnet 8 so as to vary the distance separating these two plates 3 and 3' or 3 and 3”, more precisely the pair of plates 3', 3” fixed to the spar 10 and the plate 3 fixed directly to one end of the brass tube 2.
- the adjustment wheel 6 is in contact with the permanent magnet 8, and therefore close to the spar 10, so that the distance between the pair of plates 3', 3" under the spar 10 and plate 3 on the end of brass tube 2 is minimal, in this case 25 mm.
- the adjustment wheel 6 is at a distance from the permanent magnet 8, and therefore from the spar 10, the maximum distance between the pair of plates 3 ', 3 "and the plate 3 at the opposite end of the brass tube 2 being 45 mm.
- the minimum and maximum distance i.e. between 25 mm and 45 mm, makes it possible to mount and fix the impedance variator 1 in or on most wind instruments having at least two screw portions. -to-vis substantially parallel to each other but can provide a greater distance or on the contrary smaller.
- This variable distance 25 mm to 45 mm is particularly suitable for 20 trumpets or 30 cornets.
- the brass spar 10, on which or under which two 3′, 3′′ plates are fixed, is, in one embodiment, in the form of a parallelepiped with a length of 44 mm, d 7mm wide and 2mm thick.
- the permanent magnet 8 and the threaded axis 5 are fixed on the spar 10 so that the tube in brass 2 extends along an axis perpendicular to the plane (in the direction defining the length and the direction defining the width) or to the axis of extension (in the direction of the length) of the brass spar 10.
- the permanent magnet 8 is advantageously fixed to the brass spar 10 and has, in the embodiment chosen to illustrate the invention, the following dimensions:
- the permanent magnet 8 is advantageously a neodymium magnet.
- the permanent magnet 8 has an internal bore to allow the threaded pin 5 to pass through the magnet 8.
- Fixing the elements together in particular fixing the brass tube 2 to a 3, 3' or 3” brass plate, fixing the permanent magnet 8 to the brass spar 10 and fixing the the pair of plates 3′, 3′′ under the spar 10 is made using methods and means well known to those skilled in the art, for example by welding, crimping or even by gluing; the fixing methods can of course vary to fix two types of elements mentioned above.
- the impedance variator 1 consists of two brass plates - i.e. two support plates 3, 3' or 3, 3” located at the two opposite ends of the tube - connected by an elevator (the adjustment means 5, 6 of the distance between these two plates 3, 3' or 3, 3") with micrometric screw, that is the threaded axis 5 and the brass tube 2.
- the musician places the dimmer impedance 1 by placing a first fulcrum on the start of a branch of a horn 30, and a second fulcrum on the same branch after the first bend 31 (FIG. 8). Thanks to its adjustment possibilities, the impedance variator 1 according to the invention can be positioned where the musician wishes and with the appropriate pressure on the two branches of the horn 30.
- the impedance variator 1 is fixed identically, either with a first point of support (via a support plate 3 or a pair of support plates 3', 3") on a branch and a second point of support (again via a support plate 3 or a pair of support plates 3', 3") on the bell of the instrument 20, as shown in this figure.
- the impedance variator 1 can have a suitable or aesthetic color with regard to the wind instrument 20 or 30, either in particular thanks to varnishing or platinization or silver or gold plating, preferably with a thickness of 6 microns.
- All the 2, 3, 3’, 3” 10 elements shown are made of brass, i.e. an alloy mainly of copper and zinc, in variable proportions.
- all these elements 2, 3, 3′, 3′′, 10 consist of the same brass, that is to say a brass having exactly the same components in the same relative quantities.
- brass elements 2, 3, 3', 3”, 10 in the impedance variator 1 according to the invention preferably consist of simple or binary alloy brasses.
- the adjustment adjustment means 5, 6 possibly consisting of a different assembly of mechanical elements or electromechanical means such as for example a screw-without-without motorized using an electric motor or still at least one small hydraulic cylinder;
- the permanent magnet 8 may consist of any ferromagnetic material other than a neodymium magnet and may be fixed to the brass tube 2 or even directly to a 3, 3' or 3" plate, it being understood that the impedance variator 1 according to the invention may have a plurality of permanent magnets 8, optionally or advantageously of different sizes.
