Definitions
- the invention relates to a laundry treating machine having a tub including an inside for receiving laundry to be treated, said tub including an essentially cylindrical shell and a circular back wall closing said shell at an end thereof, and an air guiding circuit for guiding an air flow through said tub, said air guiding circuit including a condenser having an injection device for injecting a liquid into the air flow for condensing humidity from the air flow.
- Document WO 2011/113803 A1 discloses a laundry treating machine embodied as a washer/dryer for washing and drying laundry, the laundry treating machine also including a condenser for condensing humidity from a hot and humid air flow by spraying water into the air flow through an injection device.
- the condenser is placed separate from the tub.
- the injection device includes a spray head rotatable by water sprayed out of nozzles provided at the spray head for distributing spray water evenly into the condenser and having inner surfaces of the condenser rinsed thoroughly.
- Any known laundry treatment machine including a drying function for laundry generally includes an air guiding circuit with components for heating or de-humidifying an air flow applied for treating the laundry placed outside the tub and connected to the tub's inside by suitable air guides such as tubes and connectors.
- This requires considerable space for placing the air guiding circuit which may incur problems if the tub is suspended movably within the laundry treatment machine by limiting any possible swing of the tub or limiting the dimensions of the tub for meeting a pertinent standard of outer size of such laundry treatment machine.
- liquid like freshwater for de-humidifying an air flow in a laundry treatment machine is determined by an efficiency of interaction between the humid air flow and the water added on purpose of cooling and provoking condensation of humidity from the air flow. If efficiency is low, the amount of water to be applied for proper condensation is high.
- an air flow emerging from laundry being dried usually includes dispersed particulate matter extracted from the laundry and conventionally termed lint which needs to be extracted from the air flow to prevent it from being deposited uncontrollably within the air guiding circuit.
- lint which needs to be extracted from the air flow to prevent it from being deposited uncontrollably within the air guiding circuit.
- extraction may be accomplished by a lint filter suitably designed and placed in the air guiding circuit, as commonly practiced in laundry dryers.
- the liquid may also be applied for extracting lint from the air flow.
- Appropriate effectivity of extracting lint however requires provision of an intimate contact between the liquid and the air flow.
- the present invention provides a laundry treating machine of the generic type as defined in the generic part of the independent claim attached which also includes the features of the characterizing part of said independent claim.

All figures exhibit a back section of a tub comprising a part, specifically a half, of shell 6 and back wall 7, as formed by injection moulding of a suitable plastic material. A bulge 21 is formed in back wall 7 as a recess projecting out of tub 4, as best seen in Fig. 2 . Bulge 21 is covered by cover 21 formed as a segment of an annulus, where the inner limitation of the annulus is required to allow a drum shaft to penetrate a bearing disposed in back wall 7. Thereby, condenser 12 is formed as a flat annular segment between bulge 21 and cover 22 such as in Fig. 3. Fig.
- FIG. 4 shows the disposition of injection device 13 with pipe section 14 disposed within condenser 12, aligned along back wall 7, having three nozzles 15 for evenly distributing liquid provided by injection device 13, and having first opening 16. Droplets or small streams of liquid formed by nozzles 15 may fall downwards through condenser 12, thereby providing intimate contact to the air flow traversing condenser 12 in counterflow and effectively provoking condensation of humidity from the air flow.
- liquid stored in tank 35 is used for absorbing heat extracted from liquid passing liquid cooler 37 by being heated. Possibly, not all liquid accumulated in tank 35 during a drying process for a batch of laundry 2 may be needed for providing the condensing effect in condenser 12.
- Tank 35 may serve as a reservoir for liquid to be used in a subsequent laundry treatment process involving treatment of laundry 2 by washing or rinsing.
- Heat pump 38 provides for heating liquid stored in tank 35, thereby allowing to apply such subsequent treatment with liquid pre-heated by heat pump 38, thus saving energy for heating during subsequent treatment. Further, use of freshwater for condensing humidity is avoided.
- Fig. 6 exhibits a second alternative to the open liquid guiding system 23 as shown in Fig. 1 .
- injection device 13 is also included in a closed liquid guiding system 34 including sump 27 for storing liquid collected from condenser 12, a liquid pump 36 for forwarding liquid from sump 27 to injection device 13, and a liquid cooler 37 for cooling liquid prior to reaching said injection device 13.
- a lint filter that may be appropriate to have between sump 27 and injection device 13, to strain liquid to be forwarded to injection device 13 from lint which is particulate matter extracted from laundry 2 being dried by the air flow to be de-humidified in condenser 12.
- Heat pump 38 is configured for pumping heat absorbed from liquid to be forwarded to injection device 13 in liquid cooler 37 to air heater 19 which is applied for heating the air flow which is applied for drying.
- This air flow first enters condenser 12 through first opening 16 to be de-humidified, then passes to air heater 19 through second opening 17 and re-enters tub 4 for absorbing more humidity from laundry to be dried through third opening 20. If the heating power of air heater 19 is insufficient for efficiently drying laundry, air heater 19 may be supplemented by another heater which may also belong to heat pump 38. In this alternative, use of freshwater for condensation is also avoided, and heat absorbed from liquid to be used in condenser 12 is applied for heating the air flow, and thereby recycled in the drying process itself.
- the evaporated refrigerant flows to compressor 40 to be compressed, and subsequently reaches Tank 35 or air heater 19 to be condensed, thereby releasing heat to the liquid in tank 35 or to the air flow to be forwarded to tub 4 for absorbing humidity from laundry 2.
- the liquid refrigerant reaches restrictor 41 which may be embodied as an orifice, a valve, or a capillary, to reduce its internal pressure and temperature, and finally flows back to liquid cooler 37 to complete the circuit.
- restrictor 41 may be embodied as an orifice, a valve, or a capillary, to reduce its internal pressure and temperature, and finally flows back to liquid cooler 37 to complete the circuit.
- Application of heat pump 38 greatly improves utilization of energy for drying laundry 2 by recirculating heat energy though the heat pumping effect.
- the invention reduces requirements of space outside tub 4 for condenser 12. An intimate contact between the liquid and the air flow for properly fulfilling the functions of condensing humidity and extracting lint is enabled thereby. De-humidification of the air flow thus improved considerable reduction of energy consumption within a complete drying cycle may result.
- the improved design of condenser 12 may yield advantages in manufacturing laundry treatment machine 1. Even further, laundry treatment machine 1 of the invention properly lends itself to integration of a heat pump 38 for heating and cooling purposes, thereby further reducing energy consumption in a drying process.
