Definitions
- Packaging for smoking articles and method for manufacturing such packaging are packaged for smoking articles and method for manufacturing such packaging
- the present invention relates to a packaging for smoking articles, wherein the packaging has a substantially cuboid shape in a closed state and comprises a packaging body with a top opening being closable with a lid hingedly connected to a back side of the packaging body, wherein the lid comprises a rectangular top panel and front, back and side panels being ar- ranged to each other in right angles, wherein the extent of the front panel in a longitudinal direction from top to bottom of the lid is larger than the extent of the back panel in the longitu dinal direction.
- a packaging containing a consumable product often comprise a tamper evidence, when sold to the consumer.
- the tamper evidence is modified when the packaging is opened for the first time and therefore indicates whether the packaging has been opened before or not when reaching its final user.
- a wrapping out of polyethylene foil or any other plastic foil comprising a tear-and-open strip is used as tamper evidence in addition to the packaging. But due to sustainability reasons these plastic foils are undesirable.
- a packaging for smoking articles wherein the packaging has a substantially cuboid shape in a closed state and comprises a packaging HAh WO 2021/152099 ARTNER PCT/EP2021/052122 PT 2 body with a top opening being closable or closed with a lid hingedly connected to the pack aging body, wherein the lid comprises a rectangular top panel and front, back and side pan els being arranged to each other in right angles, wherein the lid is hingedly connected to a back side of the packaging body at the back panel, wherein the extent of the front panel in a longitudinal direction from top to bottom of the lid is larger than the extent of the back panel in the longitudinal direction.
- the invention is characterized in that the side panels are each separable into an upper and a lower part along a perforation line running from a lower front corner of the respective side panel to an intermediate point of a rear edge of the respective side panel and in that and in that the lower parts of the side panels are affixed to the packag ing body.
- Substantially cuboid can mean, that the faces, corners and/or edges may comprise bevels and/or be curved and/or rounded.
- the lower parts of the side panels of the lid are affixable to the packaging body or any additional packaging component.
- An additional packaging compo nent can be any inner or outer wrapper or liner.
- the additional polyethylene or plastic wrapping is omitted, which reduces waste and makes the whole packaging more sustainable, while still providing a reliable tamper evidence to the customer.
- This also means, that the manufacturing step for the polyethylene or plastic wrapping can be omitted, which reduces manufacturing cost.
- the cut pattern of the material from which the packaging is folded is highly similar to any standard cut pattern without this tamper evidence.
- only the lower parts of the side panels are added to the cut pattern and a perforation has to be created between the lower and upper parts.
- the packaging can be folded and manufactured in the very same way as any standard packaging with the standard machinery. Only one additional step, the affixation of the lower parts, is necessary.
- the perfora tion line By arranging the perfora tion line from the lower front corner to an intermediate point of the rear edge, the perforation line can be torn easily, when the hingedly connected lid is rotated upwards for opening. This makes the tamper evidence easy to use for the customer. In comparison to the standard tam per evidence with the polyethylene wrapping having a tear open strip, the suggested tamper evidence reduces the steps necessary for the customer to only one step: the upward rotation of the hingedly connected lid. Also all parts of the packaging remain affixed to some part of the packaging, which reduced the risk of waste being dumped into the environment without proper waste disposal.
- the lower parts of the side panels are affixed to the packaging body.
- the affixation at the packaging body is most convenient. In this way, no additional packaging component is necessary to provide the tamper evidence.
- the lower parts of the side panels are affixed to the respective sides of the packaging body.
- the lower parts are glued to the packaging body.
- the glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA).
- the lower parts of the side panels are glued to the pack aging body.
- the packaging body comprises double layered side panels, each with an inside layer and an outside layer and the lower parts of the side panels of the lid are glued to the inside layer of the side panels of the packaging body.
- the packaging body comprises a front panel and a back panel, wherein the extent of the front panel is smaller than the extent of the back panel in the longitudinal direction and the packaging body further comprises side panels, each having an angled upper edge, which connects an upper edge of the front panel with an upper edge of the back panel, wherein the lower parts of the lids side panels are affixed to the respective side panels of packaging body at a fixation area near the angled upper edge.
- the angled upper edge of the of the packaging body’s side panels is ar ranged near the perforation line of the lid’s side panels in the closed state of the packaging.
- the two overlapping sections have a similar shape. In this overlap the fixation area is located.
- the lower parts of the lid’s side panels can be easily affixed to the packaging body.
- the lower parts can be affixed very closely to the perforation line due to the similar shape of the overlapping areas. This improves the tearing process of the perforation and ensures a proper functioning of the tamper evidence.
- the fixation area is distanced from the angled upper edge by a small margin.
- the margin prevents the glue, used for the affixation, from spilling, as this would create a low quality impression of the packaging.
- one single round glue dot is arranged in the affixation area.
- several smaller glue dots may be used.
- the several glue dots are distributed evenly in the affixation area.
- 4 or 5 glue dots are used.
- the glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA).
- PVA polyvinyl acetate
- the angled upper edge and the perforation line do not completely align in the closed state.
- the angled upper edge is angled with respect to the perforation line in the closed state.
- the angle between angled upper edge and perforation line in the closed state is 5° to 10°, even more preferred 6° to 8°.
- this arrangement allows for a cutout forming the angled upper edge exceed ing the minimum size for cutouts.
- very small misalignments of angled upper edge and perforation line which could occur for a complete alignment due to manufacturing tolerances and would create a low quality impression of the packaging, are prohibited.
- the perforation line comprises cuts alternating with webs, wherein the perforation line starts at the lower front corner with a cut. Cuts alternating with webs means that along the perforation line a cut is followed by uncut material. Each uncut material of the perforation line is referred to as a web.
- the perforation line is torn, the tearing process starts at the lower front corner. This is caused by the rotational opening move ment of the hingedly connected lid.
- the lower front corner denotes the point of the perforation line having the largest distance to the pivot point of the lid, whereas the intermediate point of the rear edge denotes the point of the perforation line having the smallest distance to the pivot point of the lid.
- a width of the webs measured along the perforation line is 0.04 to 3 mm.
- the minimum width of the webs measured along the perforation line is 0.1 mm, even more preferred 0.2 mm, and/or the maximum width 2 mm, even more preferred to 1 mm.
- a certain minimum width of the webs ensures that any unwanted tearing of the per foration line is prohibited. This is very important to ensure a reliable tamper evidence.
- a maxi mum width of the webs on the other hand ensures an easy and convenient tearing of the perforation, when initiated by the user. In the given ranges, the reliable functioning of the tam per evidence is provided.
- the grammage of the material from which the packaging is constructed is also important. The lower the grammage the wider the webs can be.
- the grammage of the packaging’s material is 170 to 300 g/m 2 .
- the cuts comprise a length along the perforation line of 0.1 to 20 mm.
- the cuts comprise a minimum length along the perforation line of 1 mm, even more preferred 2 mm, and/or a maximum length of 15 mm, even more preferred 10 mm.
- a certain maximum length of the cuts ensures that any unwanted tearing of the perforation line is prohibited. This is very important to ensure a reliable tamper evidence.
- a minimum length of the cuts on the other hand ensures an easy and convenient tearing of the perforation, when initiated by the user. In the given ranges, the reliable functioning of the tamper evidence is provided.
- a maximum of 50 % of the length of the perforation line consists of webs, whereas a minimum of 50 % of the length of the perforation line consist of cuts. Even more preferred, a maximum of 25 % of the length of the perforation line consists of webs, whereas a minimum of 75 % of the length of the perforation line consist of cuts.
- the length of the perfo ration line consisting of cuts denotes at least 85 % of the perforation line length, even more preferred 90 %, and/or up to 93 %, even more preferred 95 %.
- the number of cuts equals the number of webs in the perfo ration line.
- the beginning and the end of the perfora tion line differ from each other in that at one a cut is arranged and at the other a web.
- the web can be arranged at the start if a high initial force for tearing the perforation line is desired.
- This embodiment is especially advanta geous in combination with a cut arranged at the beginning of the perforation line. In this case, at the end of the perforation a web is arranged.
- the initial force to tear the perforation and open the packaging is lower and with the web at the end of the perforation, the lever for tearing the last web is maximized.
- the perforation is par ticularly easy to tear open. This is convenient for the user.
- a reliable tamper evidence is still provided, as this particularly easy tearing is only given for a rotational movement of the lid, whereas any normal or angled force incidence on the perforation line does not comprise this reduction in force.
- the number of cuts is four and the number of webs is four.
- the perforation line can be designed in an advantageous way with respect to the proportions of at standard cigarette packaging. For other packagings than stand ard cigarette packagings the ideal number of cuts and webs may differ.
- the length of the cuts along the perforation line decreases monotonically or strictly monotonically from the lower front corner to the intermediate point.
- the percentage of material to be teared is lower at the beginning of the perforation line compared to its end. This will yield in high levering forces when rotating the lid upwards, which will ease the tearing of the perforation and results in good tearing behavior of the perforation line.
- Monotonic decrease means in this case, that the cut length of the first cut at the beginning of the perforation at the lower front corner is largest and along the perforation line towards its end at the intermediate point of the rear edge every subsequent cut is equal or shorter in length that the preceding cut.
- Strictly Monotonic decrease means in this case, that the cut length of the first cut at the beginning of the perforation at the lower front corner is largest and along the perforation line towards its end at the intermediate point of the rear edge every subsequent cut is shorter in length that the preceding cut.
- the width of the webs along the perforation line decreases monotonically or strictly monotonically from the lower front corner to the intermediate point.
- the actual amount of material to be teared is lower at the beginning of the perforation line compared to its end. This will ease the start of the tearing and prohibit any unwanted detachment of the lower part of the lid’s side panel during production handling.
- the front panel and the side panels each have a rectangular shape.
- a rectangular shape denotes a very easy solution, which is easy to manufacture and handle during production.
- the lower edge of the Ned’s side panel is a line and is arranged perpendicular to the rear edge of the respective side panel. Also the required cutting tool is easy to manufacture and maintain.
- the side panels may comprise a polygonal shape. In this case, the lower edge is not perpendicular to the rear edge. In another alternative embodiment, the lower edge comprises a curved shape. In this way, the packaging can be freely designed according to the manufacturer preferences.
- an angle between the perforation line and a front edge of the side panels is 55° - 62°, preferably 57°- 60°, even more preferred 59°- 58°.
- This angle is most suitable for tearing the perforation when rotating the lid backwards to open the packaging for the first time.
- the angle between a rear edge of the packaging body’s side panel and the angled upper edge of the packaging body’s side panel is smaller than the angle the perforation line and the front edge of the respective side panel. In this way, the perforation line is arranged above the angled upper edge 22 of the packaging body’s side panel in the closed state of the packaging.
- the lower part of the lid’s side panel can be easily affixed to the packaging body’s side panel without affixing the upper part of the lid’s side panel also the packaging body’s side panel, which is crucial for the perforation to be tearable.
- the perforation line is arranged with an angle of 28-35°, preferably 30 - 33°, most preferred 31 - 32° to the lower edge of the respective side panel.
- the packaging has a substantially cuboid shape in a closed state and comprises a packaging body with a top opening being closable with a lid hingedly connected to a back side of the packaging body, wherein the lid comprises a rectangular top panel and front, back and side panels being arranged to each other in right angles, wherein the extent of the front panel in a longitudinal direction from top to bottom of the lid is larger than the extent of the back panel in the longitudinal direction.
- the method is characterized in that the side panels are formed to be separable into an upper and a lower part along a perforation line running from a lower front corner of the respective side panel to an intermediate point of a rear edge of the respective side panel.
- Substantially cuboid can mean, that the faces, corners and/or edges may comprise bevels and/or be curved and/or rounded.
- the perforation line is preferably generated by die cutting.
- the perforation line is cut in the same manufacturing step in which the packaging material is cut according to the cut pattern.
- the packaging material is cut from a bobbin.
- the lower parts of the side panels is affixed to the packaging body or any additional packaging component.
- the method comprises also the advantage, that the affixation of the lower parts of the side panels can be carried out independently from the manufacturing process of the packaging in principle.
- This manufacturing process would be identical with a pack aging without the tamper evidence with the only exception of the die cutting of the perforation.
- the packaging functions as a normal packaging without any tamper evidence.
- the inside of the packaging is accessible through the top open ing by opening the lid.
- the lid becomes immobile only as recent as when the lower parts of the side panels are affixed. This leaves room for any kind of manufacturing steps before the affix ation for which accessibility of the packaging’s inside through the top opening is necessary.
- the lower parts of the lid are permanently affixed to respective side panels of the packaging body.
- the side panels of the packaging body are a very advantageous position for affixing the lower parts of the lid’s side panels.
- the lower parts of the lid’s side panels overlap with the side panels of the packaging body. In this overlap the affixa tion area is located.
- the lower part of the lid’s side panels is affixed with glue to the side panels of the packaging body.
- the glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA).
- PVA polyvinyl acetate
- one single round glue dot is used. In alternative to that several smaller glue dots may be used.
- the several glue dots are distributed evenly in the affixation area.
- 4 or 5 glue dots are used.
- the glue is positioned to the edge of the packaging material with a margin left free.
- the margin is 1 mm.
- At least one additional manufacturing step is carried out after the folding of the packaging but before the affixation of the lower parts of the lid’s side panels.
- the permanent locking of the packaging by affixing the lower parts can be carried out at any desired process stage.
