Definitions
- the impurities are usually polymers, unreacted monomers, residues of catalysts, intermediate products and/or conglomerates of polymers with other materials with which the polymers or their intermediates have come into contact.
- the cleaning agents according to the invention are used in the foundry sector.
- inorganic components such as quartz sand or special sands are often used to bind the mold base material. It is also possible that extremely small silicon dioxide (fumed silica) forms the inorganic component.
- Special sands can be mineral sands or sintered or melted products that are produced in granular form or are converted into granular form through appropriate mechanical processing such as crushing, grinding and classifying.
- aluminum silicates in the form of natural minerals or mineral mixtures, aluminum silicates in the form of technical sintered ceramics, natural heavy minerals such as R-sand, chromite sand and zirconium sand, technical oxide ceramics such as M-sand or bauxite sand and technical non-oxide ceramics such as silicon carbite. These granular components are embedded in a binder system and the desired shape for casting is formed from them.
- a binder system that consists of two components is often used.
- One component is a polyol normally dissolved in a solvent with at least two OH groups in the molecule, the so-called polyol component.
- the other component is a polyisocyanate, also dissolved in a solvent or solvent-free, with at least two isocyanate groups in the molecule (polyisocyanate component).
- the polyol component is often a phenolic resin dissolved in a solvent. This component is often referred to as the phenolic resin component.
- the phenolic resin and the polyisocyanate components are mixed together and mixed with the inorganic solid components to form a molding material mixture.
- the hardening of the binder system can be carried out, for example, by adding basic catalysts, preferably tertiary amines, which are introduced into the molding material mixture after the molding material mixture has been formed into the desired foundry core or foundry mold.
- basic catalysts preferably tertiary amines
- the procedure is called the polyurethane cold box process.
- foundry molds or foundry cores produced in this way are then filled with steel alloys or iron.
- the high temperatures more or less completely destroy the polyurethane binding system.
- residues often remain on the castings or on the casting tools, which come from the binder system and are generally inhomogeneous from a chemical point of view.
- cleaners according to the invention have lower toxicity and/or environmental harm than the previously known cleaners.
- NMP N-methylpyrrolidone
- NMP N-methylpyrrolidone
- NEP N-ethylpyrrolidone
- DMF dimethylformamide
- MEK methyl ethyl ketone
- WO 2018/039415 A1 describes a low toxicity composition for removing a coating from a surface.
- the cleaning mechanism for removing contaminants through binder systems or the components resulting therefrom works by removing the plastic by dissolving it from a mostly metal surface using the solvent system according to the invention.
- the solvents to be used were selected based on their three-dimensional Hansen solubility parameters.
- the cleaning agents according to the invention are characterized in that they contain dimethyl sulfoxide (CAS67-68-5 ) in an amount that is between 40% by weight and 60% by weight.
- the proportion of dimethyl sulfoxide in the cleaning agent is between 40% by weight and 50% by weight.
- a proportion of dimethyl sulfoxide between 42 and 48% by weight is particularly preferred.
- 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)-ethanol (CAS111-90-0 ), which is in an amount of 0.1 to 40% by weight, preferably 10 to 40% by weight, particularly preferably 20 to 40% by weight and most preferably in an amount of 22 to 38% by weight is available.
- Another mandatory component of the cleaning agent according to the invention is butyrolactone (CAS96-48-0 ), which is present in an amount of 0.5 to 20% by weight, preferably 10 to 20% by weight and particularly preferably 12 to 20% by weight. Dihydrofuran-2(3H)-one is preferably used in an amount of 13 to 20% by weight.
- Another, also mandatory component of the cleaning agent according to the invention is 2-ethylhexyl acetate ( CAS103-09-3 ) which is present in an amount of 0.1 to 5% by weight, preferably 1.5 to 4.5% by weight and particularly preferably 2.0 to 4.3% by weight.
- a further component that is present in the cleaning agent according to the invention are additives which are present in an amount between 0.1 to 5% by weight, preferably 0.2 to 3% by weight and particularly preferably 0.3 to 2.0 % by weight are present.
- the additives are components that are added in relatively small proportions and improve the properties of the cleaning agent according to the invention.
- the individual additive components are added depending on the desired purpose.
- the additives are wetting agents, emulsifiers, solubilizers, corrosion inhibitors or complexing agents, builders, buffers, abrasives, electrolytes, fragrances and dyes, foam control agents, dispersants or silicones, although the above list is not exhaustive.
- the above-mentioned components represent the essential components of the cleaning agent according to the invention. In certain embodiments, it is possible to add further components, depending on the corresponding areas of application. In preferred embodiments, these are the following components:
- the cleaning agent according to the invention can additionally contain 0.1 to 5 percent by weight of glycol ethers, and/or 0.1 to 5 percent by weight of carboxylic acid esters and/or 0.1 to 5 percent by weight of suitable ketones.
- the cleaning agent according to the invention contains no NMP (N-methylpyrrolidone) and, furthermore, preferably no other component that is classified with a CMR hazard rate according to the CLP regulation. Furthermore, in a preferred embodiment, the cleaning agent according to the invention contains no water, or at most traces of water (up to 0.2% by weight, maximum 2% by weight of water.
- NMP N-methylpyrrolidone
- the cleaning agent according to the invention contains no water, or at most traces of water (up to 0.2% by weight, maximum 2% by weight of water.
- the ratio of the individual components to one another is given in percent by weight (wt.%). It goes without saying that the sum of the respective components must always add up to 100 percent by weight. The relationship between the individual components must be adjusted accordingly. It is therefore not possible for the cleaning agent according to the invention to always use either the specified upper limit or the lower limit of the amount of all components.
- the cleaning agents according to the invention can contain further components, especially in small amounts. In a preferred embodiment, however, they consist exclusively of the components described here.
- the cleaning agents according to the invention resulted in a significantly improved cleaning performance, that is to say an improved removal of contaminants, when using the cold box PU process.
- the cleaning agent according to the invention was able to excellently dissolve and remove special contaminants that arise during the production of molds in the foundry, such as phenolic cold resins, phenolic resins or polyisocyanates, as well as reaction products resulting therefrom .
- the cleaners according to the invention made it possible to replace the previously used NMP-containing cleaners, which meant that the risk potential could be reduced so significantly that the cleaners according to the invention with the danger classification H318 (causes serious eye damage) with standard protective equipment (safety glasses) enable practical processing in foundry operations .
- NMP cleaner has a harmonized classification as toxic for reproduction (reproductive toxicity category 1B) and is also an irritant for the respiratory tract, skin and eyes (H-phrases H315 (skin irritation, causes skin irritation), H319 (severe eye irritation, causes severe eye irritation), H360D (may harm the unborn child), H335 (specific target organ toxicity, single exposure may cause respiratory irritation)).
- NMP is subject to restriction 71 in Annex XVII of REACH.
- cleaners according to the invention Another important property of the cleaners according to the invention is that the evaporation rate of the mixture is low compared to the NMP-containing cleaners. This further facilitates processing and reduces exposure to toxic and potentially flammable fumes.
- the disadvantages of classic organic solvents are that they are usually easy to ignite, the formation of explosive atmospheres and a low flash point.
- the cleaner according to the invention does not have any of these disadvantages of organic solvents and can therefore be used and stored without any further precautions in terms of fire protection.
- the cleaning agent mixture according to the invention can also be used in other industrial areas such as, for example, in the area of paints and varnishes, in the adhesives industry, in the manufacture of boats, automobiles, in the electrical industry and in the manufacture of wind turbines. Like foundries, these are industries where polymer residues from polyurethanes, epoxies and other resins occur as a contaminant. As is known for cleaning in the foundry industry, the different additives of the polyurethane binder system, consisting of phenolic resin and polyisocyanate component (MDI), also play a role when it comes to removability. The use of the cleaning agent mixture according to the invention for each specific application is therefore tailored precisely to the local conditions present there.
- MDI polyisocyanate component
- the process for cleaning tools, devices and equipment in the foundry is regularly carried out as follows:
- the cleaning agent according to the invention is sprayed undiluted onto the metal surface to be cleaned, brushed or the metal parts are dipped into the cleaning agent. After an exposure time of 10 minutes, the dissolved resin residues can be removed by wiping, rinsing and blowing off with the help of compressed air.
- the adaptation to the specific conditions such as degree of contamination and type of binder (differences arise from different additives) is achieved by the exposure time, which is increased accordingly if necessary, usually from 10 to 30 minutes. It should be noted that no plastics come into contact with the cleaning product may be cleaned as plastics are generally attacked.
- the cleaning performance was assessed by an appropriately trained and experienced test person depending on the discoloration of the polymer mixture on the paper, or how easily the layer of dirt could be removed from the base and how complete this removal was.
- the individual assessments are summarized in Table 1.
- Dissolving power Proportion of DMSO composition 530-08 5 40% DMSO ⁇ 20% dihydro-2(3H)-furanone ⁇ 5% 2-ethylhexyl acetate ⁇ 40% dimethyl sulfoxide ⁇ 40% 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol 530-12 2 45% DMSO 45% 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol 45% dimethyl sulfoxide 5% C11-15 sec.
- the comparison compound 530-12 shows that the ranges according to the invention should be adhered to in order to achieve the good dissolving effect.
- the combination of the components of butyrolactone (GLB) and DMSO in coordinated amounts is essential for an effective dissolving power of the cleaning agents according to the invention.
- the proportion of 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol is 45% by weight and therefore outside the range according to the invention.
- Sample 530-12 does not contain any GBL and thus shows that only a mixture of the four components essential to the invention fulfills the required properties and in particular the high dissolving power.
- the release force at 530-12 is significantly reduced (level 2 only).
- the dissolving power of the pure substances was also determined.
- Dimethyl sulfoxide (sample number 530-14) has a dissolving power of 3.5.
- the pure substances NMP and gamma-butyrolactone have a similarly good dissolving effect as the mixtures according to the invention, they cannot be used for reasons of handling.
- the dissolving power is graphically in Figure 1 shown.

Description
Mischung Nr. Lösekraft Anteil DMSO Zusammensetzung 530-08 5 40% DMSO <20% Dihydro-2(3H)-furanon <5% 2-ethylhexyl acetate <40% Dimethylsulfoxid <40% 2-(2-Ethoxyethoxy)-ethanol 530-12 2 45% DMSO 45% 2-(2-Ethoxyethoxy)-ethanol 45% Dimethylsulfoxid 5% C11-15-Sek.
