Abstract

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Schichtsystem (1, 1', 1", 1a) zum Beschichten einer Bipolarplatte (10) oder einer Elektrodeneinheit (10a, 10b) umfassend mindestens eine erste Schicht (2, 2a, 2b), mindestens eine zweite Schicht (3) und mindestens eine, insbesondere auf der mindestens einen zweiten Schicht (3) angeordnete, Deckschicht (4, 4a, 4b) aus dotiertem, tetraedrischem amorphem Kohlenstoff ta-C:X, wobei als Dotierstoff X mindestens ein Element vorhanden ist aus der Gruppe umfassend Titan, Niob, Wolfram, Zirkon, Tantal, Hafnium, Molybdän, Kupfer, Silizium, Platin, Palladium, Ruthenium, Iridium, Silber, Bor, Stickstoff, Phosphor, Fluor, Wasserstoff, Sauerstoff, und wobei der Dotierstoff X in einer Konzentration von > 0 bis 20 at.-% in der Deckschicht (4, 4a, 4b) vorhanden ist. Die Erfindung betrifft weiterhin eine Bipolarplatte (10) oder eine Elektrodeneinheit (10a, 10b) mit einem derartigen Schichtsystem (1, 1', 1", 1a) und eine Brennstoffzelle (100) sowie eine Redox-Flow-Zelle (110).

Description

Schichtsystem zum Beschichten einer Bipolarplatte.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Schichtsystem zum Beschichten einer Bipolarplatte oder Elektrodeneinheit umfassend eine dotierte, Diamant-ähnliche Kohlenstoffschicht. Die Erfindung betrifft weiterhin eine Bipolarplatte mit einem derartigen Schichtsystem und eine mit mindestens einer solchen Bipolarplatte gebildete Brennstoffzelle. Die Erfin dung betrifft weiterhin eine Elektrodeneinheit mit einem derartigen Schichtsystem und eine mit mindestens einer solchen Elektrodeneinheit gebildete Redox-Flow-Zelle.
Bipolarplatten und Brennstoffzellen sind aus der DE 102 30 395 A1 bereits bekannt. Diese Bipolarplatte weist ein metallisches Substrat auf, das mit einer dotierten Dia mantbeschichtung und/oder einer dotierten Diamant-ähnlichen Kohlenstoffbeschich tung versehen ist.
Metallische Substrate werden für die Bildung von Bipolarplatten von Brennstoffzellen aufgrund ihrer guten mechanischen Stabilität sowie hohen elektrischen und thermi schen Leitfähigkeit eingesetzt. Unter den aggressiven Betriebsbedingungen in einer Brennstoffzelle kommt es aber häufig zu Korrosion und Auflösung des metallischen Substrats, so dass vor Korrosion schützende Beschichtungen aufgebracht werden, um die Langzeitstabilität der Bipolarplatten zu erhöhen. Bei ungünstigen Betriebsbe dingungen der Brennstoffzelle kommt es aber immer wieder zu Beschädigungen im Bereich solcher Beschichtungen, so dass der Schutz des metallischen Substrats zu mindest lokal verloren geht und eine Korrosion des metallischen Substrats dennoch mit Zeitverzug einsetzt.
Es ist daher Aufgabe der Erfindung, ein Schichtsystem für eine Bipolarplatte oder Elektrodeneinheit bereitzustellen, das kostengünstig herzustellen ist und ein metalli sches Substrat vor Korrosion schützt. Weiterhin ist es Aufgabe der Erfindung, eine damit ausgebildete Bipolarplatte und eine Brennstoffzelle mit einer solchen Bipolar platte bereitzustellen sowie eine Elektrodeneinheit und eine mit mindestens einer sol chen Elektrodeneinheit gebildete Redox-Flow-Zelle bereitzustellen. Die Aufgabe wird für das Schichtsystem zum Beschichten einer Bipolarplatte oder Elektrodeneinheit gelöst, indem dieses ausgebildet ist umfassend
- mindestens eine erste Schicht,
- mindestens eine zweite Schicht und
- mindestens eine, insbesondere auf der mindestens einen zweiten Schicht angeord nete, Deckschicht aus dotiertem, tetraedrischem amorphem Kohlenstoff ta-C:X, wobei als Dotierstoff X mindestens ein Element vorhanden ist aus der Gruppe umfassend Ti tan, Niob, Wolfram, Zirkon, Tantal, Hafnium, Molybdän, Kupfer, Silizium, Platin, Palla dium, Ruthenium, Iridium, Silber, Bor, Stickstoff, Phosphor, Fluor, Wasserstoff, Sauer stoff, und wobei der Dotierstoff X in einer Konzentration von > 0 bis 20 at.-% in der Deckschicht vorhanden ist.
Das Schichtsystem zeichnet sich durch eine hohe Langzeitstabilität bei gleichzeitig hoher elektrischer Leitfähigkeit und geringen Kosten aus. Zudem gewährleistet das Schichtsystem einen ausgezeichneten Korrosionsschutz für ein metallisches Grund material oder ein metallisches Substrat einer Bipolarplatte oder Elektrodeneinheit.
Die Deckschicht aus dotiertem, tetraedrischem amorphem Kohlenstoff ta-C:X weist dabei überwiegend sp3-hybridisierte Bindungen auf. Dabei wird hier unter einem tetraedrisch amorphen Kohlenstoff ta-C verstanden, wenn der sp3-Hybridisierungs- anteil in der Deckschicht bei über 50 % liegt.
Bevorzugt ist die mindestens eine erste Schicht des Schichtsystems eine metallische Schicht, die aus mindestens einem Element der Gruppe Titan, Niob, Hafnium, Zirkon, Tantal gebildet ist. Insbesondere ist die mindestens eine erste Schicht aus einer Titan- Niob-Legierung gebildet. Die Titan-Niob-Legierung weist dabei bevorzugt einen Niob anteil im Bereich von 20 bis 60 at.-% auf.
Es können mehrere solche erste Schichten vorhanden sein, die die gleiche oder auch voneinander abweichende Zusammensetzungen aufweisen können. Die mindestens eine zweite Schicht des Schichtsystems ist bevorzugt eine mit min destens einem Nichtmetall dotierte metallische Schicht, die gebildet ist aus mindes tens einem Element der Gruppe Titan, Niob, Hafnium, Zirkon, Tantal, und wobei das mindestens eine Nichtmetall gebildet ist durch mindestens ein Element aus der Grup pe umfassend Stickstoff, Kohlenstoff, Fluor, Bor, Wasserstoff, Sauerstoff.
Es können mehrere solche zweite Schichten vorhanden sein, die die gleiche oder auch voneinander abweichende Zusammensetzungen aufweisen können.
Zudem können erste Schichten und zweite Schichten abwechselnd aufeinander an geordnet sein.
Es können weiterhin mehrere solche Deckschichten vorhanden sein, die die gleiche oder auch voneinander abweichende Zusammensetzungen aufweisen können.
Eine Anzahl n an ersten Schichten oder zweiten Schichten oder Deckschichten kann hierbei jeweils im Bereich von n > 2 bis 100 liegen.
Bevorzugt ist eine Deckschicht aus ta-C:X, wobei der Dotierstoff X aus Wasserstoff und/oder Sauerstoff gebildet ist und in einer Menge im Bereich von 0,1 bis 10 at.-% vorhanden ist.
Besonders bevorzugt ist eine Deckschicht aus ta-C:X, wobei der Dotierstoff X aus Tantal oder Iridium oder Ruthenium gebildet ist und in einer Menge im Bereich von 0,1 bis 20 at.-% vorhanden ist.
Das Schichtsystem umfassend mindestens eine metallische erste Schicht und min destens eine metallische zweite Schicht sowie die mindestens eine Deckschicht ist mit einem geringen elektrischen Kontaktwiderstand von weniger als 30 mQ*cm2 herstell bar, so dass eine hohe elektrische Leitfähigkeit resultiert.
Bevorzugt werden die mindestens eine erste Schicht, die mindestens eine zweite Schicht und die mindestens eine Deckschicht mittels physikalischer Gasphasenab- scheidung (PVD-Verfahren, Physical Vapour Deposition) ausgebildet. Insbesondere ist hierbei eine Abscheidung mittels Lichtbogenverdampfens und/oder Sputterns be vorzugt. Aber auch eine Verwendung anderer Abscheideverfahren, wie eine chemi sche Gasphasenabscheidung (CVD-Verfahren, Chemical Vapour Deposition), ist al lein oder auch in Kombination mit einem PVD-Verfahren möglich. Auch der Einsatz von plasmaunterstützten CVD-Verfahren (PACVD) hat sich bewährt.
Die mindestens eine erste Schicht und/oder die mindestens eine zweite Schicht weist/weisen bevorzugt eine Schichtdicke im Bereich von 20 nm bis 900 nm auf.
Die mindestens eine Deckschicht weist vorzugsweise eine Schichtdicke im Bereich von 5 nm bis 4,5 pm auf. So lässt sich der Materialbedarf für das Schichtsystem mini mieren und dennoch ein ausreichender Korrosionsschutz für ein metallisches Substrat bei gleichzeitig guten elektrischen Eigenschaften erzielen.
Die Aufgabe wird für die Bipolarplatte mit einer Anodenseite und einer Kathodenseite gelöst, indem diese umfassend ein metallisches Substrat sowie ein erfindungsgemä ßes Schichtsystem aufweist, mit einem Aufbau der Bipolarplatte in der Reihenfolge: metallisches Substrat,
optional eine Gasdiffusionsschicht,
mindestens eine erste Schicht,
mindestens eine zweite Schicht, optional in abwechselnder Anordnung von ersten Schichten und zweiten Schichten,
mindestens eine Deckschicht.
Das Schichtsystem kann sich dabei auf der Anodenseite und/oder der Kathodenseite der Bipolarplatte befinden. Bei mehreren ersten Schichten und mehreren zweiten Schichten können diese entweder nacheinander, d.h. zuerst alle ersten Schichten und dann alle zweiten Schichten, oder aber abwechselnd, das heißt eine oder mehrere erste Schichten und eine oder mehrere zweite Schichten abwechselnd aufeinander, angeordnet sein.
Als metallisches Substrat einer Bipolarplatte ist insbesondere ein Substrat aus Edel stahl, vorzugsweise austenitischem Edelstahl, aus Titan, einer Titanlegierung, Alumi nium, einer Aluminium-Legierung oder einer Magnesium-Legierung bevorzugt. Dabei ist eine optional vorhandene Gasdiffusionsschicht elektrisch leitfähig ausgebil det.
Die Aufgabe wird weiterhin für die Brennstoffzelle, insbesondere Sauerstoff- Wasserstoff-Brennstoffzelle, oder den Elektrolyseur, dadurch gelöst, dass diese/dieser umfassend mindestens eine erfindungsgemäße Bipolarplatte ausgebildet ist.
Bevorzugt umfasst die Brennstoffzelle mindestens eine Polymerelektrolytmembrane. Bei der Brennstoffzelle kann es sich demnach um eine Hoch- oder Niedertemperatur- Polymerelektrolytbrennstoffzelle handeln.
Die Aufgabe wird weiterhin für die Elektrodeneinheit gelöst, umfassend in der Reihen folge
ein metallisches Substrat,
mindestens eine erste Schicht,
mindestens eine zweite Schicht, optional in abwechselnder Anordnung von ersten Schichten und zweiten Schichten,
mindestens eine Deckschicht.
Als metallisches Substrat der Elektrodeneinheit ist insbesondere ein Substrat aus Edelstahl, vorzugsweise austenitischem Edelstahl, aus Titan, einer Titanlegierung, Aluminium, einer Aluminium-Legierung oder einer Magnesium-Legierung bevorzugt.
Die Aufgabe wird weiterhin für die Redox-Flow-Zelle, umfassend mindestens eine er findungsgemäße Elektrodeneinheit, einen ersten Reaktionsraum und einen zweiten Reaktionsraum, wobei jeder Reaktionsraum in Kontakt mit jeweils einer Elektroden einheit steht und wobei die Reaktionsräume durch eine Polymerelektrolytmembran voneinander getrennt sind.
Die Figuren 1 bis 8 sollen erfindungsgemäße Schichtsysteme und eine damit gebilde te Bipolarplatte sowie Brennstoffzelle und Elektrodeneinheit sowie eine Redox-Flow- Zelle beispielhaft erläutern. So zeigt: Figur 1 ein erstes Schichtsystem auf einem metallischen Substrat, Figur 2 ein zweites Schichtsystem auf einem metallischen Substrat,
Figur 3 ein drittes Schichtsystem auf einem metallischen Substrat,
Figur 4 ein viertes Schichtsystem auf einem metallischen Substrat mit
Gasdiffusionsschicht,
Figur 5 eine Bipolarplatte mit einem Schichtsystem,
Figur 6 eine Brennstoffzelle beziehungsweise ein Brennstoffzellensystem, Figur 7 eine Elektrodeneinheit mit einem Schichtsystem, und
Figur 8 schematisch eine Redox-Flow-Zelle mit einer Elektrodeneinheit.
Figur 1 zeigt im Schnittbild ein Ausführungsbeispiel eines ersten erfindungsgemäßen Schichtsystems 1 auf einem metallischen Substrat 5. Auf dem Substrat 5 befindet sich eine erste Schicht 2 aus einer TiNb-Legierung. Auf der ersten Schicht 2 befindet sich eine zweite Schicht 3 aus TiNbN oder TiNbCN. Auf der zweiten Schicht 3 befindet sich mindestens eine Deckschicht 4 aus ta-C: H (Dotierstoff X = Wasserstoff) und/oder ta-C: H: 0 (Dotierstoffe X = Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff) oder ta-C:H:0:Si (Dotierstoffe X = Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff und Silizium).
Figur 2 zeigt im Schnittbild ein Ausführungsbeispiel eines zweiten erfindungsgemäßen Schichtsystems 1 ' auf einem metallischen Substrat 5. Auf dem Substrat 5 befindet sich eine erste Schicht 2a aus Titan und eine weitere erste Schicht 2b aus einer TiFIf-Legierung. Auf der weiteren ersten Schicht 2b befindet sich eine zweite Schicht 3 aus TiHfN oder TiHfCN. Auf der zweiten Schicht 3 befindet sich eine Deckschicht 4 aus ta-C: Ir (Dotierstoff X = Iridium) oder ta-C:Ru (Dotierstoff X = Ruthenium).
Figur 3 zeigt im Schnittbild ein Ausführungsbeispiel eines dritten erfindungsgemäßen Schichtsystems 1 " auf einem metallischen Substrat 5. Auf dem Substrat 5 befindet sich eine erste Schicht 2 aus Titan. Auf der ersten Schicht 2 befindet sich eine zweite Schicht 3 aus TiBN. Auf der zweiten Schicht 3 befindet sich eine erste Deckschicht 4a aus ta-C:B (Dotierstoff X = Bor). Auf der ersten Deckschicht 4a befindet sich eine zweite Deckschicht 4b aus ta-C:Ta (Dotierstoff X = Tantal). Alternativ können die erste und die zweite Deckschicht 4a, 4b abwechselnd und jeweils in einer Anzahl n > 2 auf gebracht werden. Figur 4 zeigt zeigt im Schnittbild ein Ausführungsbeispiel eines vierten erfindungsge mäßen Schichtsystems 1 auf einem metallischen Substrat 5, das eine Gasdiffusions schicht 6 aufweist. Auf der Gasdiffusionsschicht 6 befindet sich eine erste Schicht 2 aus einer TiNb-Legierung. Auf der ersten Schicht 2 befindet sich eine zweite Schicht 3 aus TiNbN oder TiNbCN. Auf der zweiten Schicht 3 befindet sich mindestens eine Deckschicht 4 aus ta-C: H (Dotierstoff X = Wasserstoff) und/oder ta-C: H: O (Dotierstof fe X = Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff) oder ta-C:H:0:Si (Dotierstoffe X = Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff und Silizium).
Figur 5 zeigt eine Bipolarplatte 10 mit einem Schichtsystem 1 , die hier ein metalli sches Substrat 5 beziehungsweise eine metallische Trägerplatte aus Edelstahl auf weist. Das Schichtsystem 1 bedeckt die Bipolarplatte 10 beidseitig. Das Schichtsys tem 1 weist insgesamt eine Dicke im Bereich von 20 nm bis 5 pm auf. Die Bipolarplat te 10 weist einen Einströmbereich 11 mit Öffnungen 8 sowie einen Auslassbereich 12 mit weiteren Öffnungen 8' auf, die zur Versorgung einer Brennstoffzelle mit Prozess gasen und Abführung von Reaktionsprodukten aus der Brennstoffzelle dienen. Die Bi polarplatte 10 weist weiterhin auf jeder Seite eine Gasverteilerstruktur 9 auf, die zur
Figur 6 zeigt schematisch ein Brennstoffzellensystem 100' umfassend mehrere
Brennstoffzellen 100. Jede Brennstoffzelle 100 umfasst eine Polymerelektrolytmemb rane 7, die zu beiden Seiten von Bipolarplatten 10, 10' benachbart ist. Gleiche Be zugszeichen wie in Figur 5 kennzeichnen gleiche Elemente.
Figur 7 zeigt eine Elektrodeneinheit 10a in dreidimensionaler Ansicht umfassend ein metallisches Substrat 5 und ein Schichtsystem 1 a auf dem Substrat 5. In das Substrat 5 ist ein Flussfeld 9a eingeprägt, so dass eine dreidimensionale Strukturierung der Oberfläche der Elektrodeneinheit 10a resultiert.
Figur 8 zeigt schematisch eine Redox-Flow-Zelle 110 beziehungsweise eine Redox- Flow-Batterie mit einer Redox-Flow-Zelle 110. Die Redox-Flow-Zelle 110 umfasst zwei Elektrodeneinheiten 10a, 10b, einen ersten Reaktionsraum 13a und einen zweiten Reaktionsraum 13b, wobei jeder Reaktionsraum 13a, 13b in Kontakt mit einer der Elektrodeneinheiten 10a, 10b steht. Die Elektrodeneinheiten 10a, 10b weisen jeweils ein Flussfeld 9a auf, das dem jeweils benachbarten Reaktionsraum 13a, 13b zuge wandt angeordnet ist. Das Schichtsystem 1 a (vergleiche Figur 7) bedeckt dabei die jeweils mit dem Reaktionsraum 13a, 13b in Kontakt stehende Oberfläche mit Flussfeld 9a des Substrats 5 der jeweiligen Elektrodeneinheit 10a, 10b. Die Reaktionsräume 13a, 13b sind durch eine Polymerelektrolytmembran 7 voneinander getrennt. Ein flüs siger Anolyt 14a wird aus einem Tank 15a über eine Pumpe 16a in den ersten Reakti onsraum 13a gepumpt und zwischen der Elektrodeneinheit 10a und der Polymerelekt rolytmembran 7 hindurchgeführt. Ein flüssiger Katholyt 14b wird aus einem Tank 15b über eine Pumpe 16b in den zweiten Reaktionsraum 13b gepumpt und zwischen der Elektrodeneinheit 10b und der Polymerelektrolytmembran 7 hindurchgeführt. Es er folgt ein lonentausch über die Polymerelektrolytmembran 7 hinweg, wobei aufgrund der Redox-Reaktion and den Elektrodeneinheiten 10a, 10b elektrische Energie frei wird.

Claims

Patentansprüche
1 . Schichtsystem (1 , 1 1 ", 1 a) zum Beschichten einer Bipolarplatte (10) oder einer Elektrodeneinheit (10a, 10b) umfassend
- mindestens eine erste Schicht (2, 2a, 2b),
- mindestens eine zweite Schicht (3) und
- mindestens eine, insbesondere auf der mindestens einen zweiten Schicht (3) ange ordnete, Deckschicht (4, 4a, 4b) aus dotiertem, tetraedrischem amorphem Kohlenstoff ta-C:X, wobei als Dotierstoff X mindestens ein Element vorhanden ist aus der Gruppe umfassend Titan, Niob, Wolfram, Zirkon, Tantal, Hafnium, Molybdän, Kupfer, Silizium, Platin, Palladium, Ruthenium, Iridium, Silber, Bor, Stickstoff, Phosphor, Fluor, Was serstoff, Sauerstoff, und wobei der Dotierstoff X in einer Konzentration von > 0 bis 20 at.-% in der Deckschicht (4, 4a, 4b) vorhanden ist.
2. Schichtsystem (1 , 1 ', 1 ", 1 a) nach Anspruch 1 , dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die mindestens eine erste Schicht (2, 2a, 2b) eine metallische Schicht ist, die aus mindes tens einem Element der Gruppe Titan, Niob, Hafnium, Zirkon, Tantal gebildet ist.
3. Schichtsystem (1 , 1 ', 1 ", 1 a) nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die mindestens eine erste Schicht (2, 2a, 2b) aus einer Titan-Niob-Legierung gebildet ist.
4. Schichtsystem (1 , 1 ', 1 ", 1 a) nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Titan-Niob-Legierung einen Niobanteil im Bereich von 20 bis 60 at.-% aufweist.
5. Schichtsystem (1 , 1 ', 1 ", 1 a) nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekenn zeichnet, dass die mindestens eine zweite Schicht (3) eine mit mindestens einem Nichtmetall dotierte metallische Schicht ist, die gebildet ist aus mindestens einem Element der Gruppe Titan, Niob, Hafnium, Zirkon, Tantal, und wobei das mindestens eine Nichtmetall gebildet ist durch mindestens ein Element aus der Gruppe umfas send Stickstoff, Kohlenstoff, Fluor, Bor, Wasserstoff, Sauerstoff.
6. Schichtsystem (1 , 1 ', 1 ", 1 a) nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die mindestens eine erste Schicht (2, 2a, 2b) und/oder die min destens eine zweite Schicht (3) eine Schichtdicke im Bereich von 20 nm bis 900 nm aufweist.
7. Schichtsystem (1 , 1 ', 1 ", 1 a) nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die mindestens eine Deckschicht (4, 4a, 4b) eine Schichtdicke im Bereich von 5 nm bis 4,5 pm aufweist.
8. Bipolarplatte (10) mit einer Anodenseite und einer Kathodenseite, umfassend ein Substrat (5) sowie ein Schichtsystem (1 , 1 ', 1 ") nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, mit einem Aufbau der Bipolarplatte (10) in der Reihenfolge:
metallisches Substrat (5),
optional eine Gasdiffusionsschicht (6),
mindestens eine erste Schicht (2, 2a, 2b),
mindestens eine zweite Schicht (3), optional in abwechselnder Anordnung von ersten Schichten (2, 2a, 2b) und zweiten Schichten (3),
mindestens eine Deckschicht (4, 4a, 4b).
9. Brennstoffzelle (100), insbesondere Sauerstoff-Wasserstoff-Brennstoffzelle, oder Elektrolyseur, umfassend mindestens eine Bipolarplatte (10) nach Anspruch 8.
10. Brennstoffzelle (100) nach Anspruch 9, umfassend mindestens eine Polymerelekt rolytmembrane (7).
1 1 . Elektrodeneinheit (10a, 10b) umfassend ein Substrat (5) sowie ein Schichtsystem (1 a) nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, mit einem Aufbau der Elektrodeneinheit (10a, 1 b) in der Reihenfolge:
metallisches Substrat (5),
mindestens eine erste Schicht (2, 2a, 2b),
mindestens eine zweite Schicht (3), optional in abwechselnder Anordnung von ersten Schichten (2, 2a, 2b) und zweiten Schichten (3),
mindestens eine Deckschicht (4, 4a, 4b).
12. Redox-Flow-Zelle (110) umfassend mindestens eine Elektrodeneinheit (10a, 10b) nach Anspruch 11 , einen ersten Reaktionsraum (13a) und einen zweiten Reaktions raum (13b), wobei jeder Reaktionsraum (13a, 13b) in Kontakt mit jeweils einer Elekt- rodeneinheit (10a, 10b) im Bereich des Schichtsystems (1 a) steht und wobei die Re aktionsräume (13a, 13b) durch eine Polymerelektrolytmembran (7) voneinander ge trennt sind.
