Description

The technical field of the invention is that of weapon mounts for military vehicles and turrets comprising such mounts.

Traditional weapon mounts on main battle tank turrets feature trunnions serving as the pivot point in elevation for the weapon. In order to limit the elevation efforts of the weapon, it is known to position the pins longitudinally at the level of the center of gravity of the oscillating mass of the weapon.

Such a mounting on a turret requires during firing to have a clearance in the central part of the turret located under the plane of rotation in bearing of the turret so that the pointing and the recoil of the weapon can be done until under this plane without interference. This clearance is conventionally formed by a turret well penetrating the chassis of the vehicle as visible in the patent US4838144 .

This type of turret well is cumbersome and constitutes a zone of vulnerability for the vehicle which is obliged to include a substantial opening at the level of the chassis in order to be able to receive the turret basket.

We also know from the patent FR390931 a weapon system of the field artillery type in which the oscillating weight incorporates a cradle which ensures the guidance of the recoiling weight and which carries at its rear end a counterweight making it possible to balance the weight of the gun during the highest pointing . This device is not suitable for mounting a weapon in a turret.

The invention proposes to solve this problem of bulk and vulnerability.

Advantageously, the invention also solves a problem of accessibility to the superstructure through the turret which, according to the state of the art, is made difficult by the presence of the breech of the weapon.

The subject of the invention is thus a weapon assembly comprising an oscillating mass which pivots in elevation with respect to a mounting, to allow aiming, and thus comprises pins intended to interface with a tank turret, the oscillating mass also incorporating a recoiling mass which translates relative to the trunnions when fired, the recoiling mass comprising in particular a weapon, weapon mounting in which the trunnions are located behind the center of gravity of the recoiling mass and in that a counterweight is intended to longitudinally counterbalance the weight of the recoiling mass at rest so as to place the center of gravity of the oscillating mass at the level of the trunnions, weapon assembly characterized in that at least one trunnion is integral with a first end of an arm which is therefore integral with the oscillating weight, arm carrying the counterweight at its second end, the counterweight comprising at least one ballistic armor plate and/or at least one functional means constituted by a sight and/or by secondary armament.

Advantageously, the assembly comprises two arms each located on either side of the oscillating weight, each arm carrying a counterweight.

According to a particular embodiment, the secondary armament may comprise a grenade launcher.

According to another embodiment, the secondary armament may include a medium-caliber machine gun.

The invention also relates to a turret for a military vehicle pivoting in bearing around a bearing separating the turret from the vehicle and defining a laying plane, turret characterized in that it comprises a weapon mounting according to one of the previous characteristics, an assembly in which the distance D between the journals and the center of gravity of the recoiling mass for a given mounting plane height is chosen so that when the oscillating mass is at its maximum site and the recoiling mass at its maximum recoil, the recoiling mass is above the landing plane.

The invention will be better understood on reading the following description, description given in the light of the appended drawings, drawings in which:
  • [ Fig.1 ]: front three-quarter view of a turret according to the invention;
  • [ Fig.2 ]: front three-quarter view of a weapon assembly according to the invention;

  • [ Fig.4 ]: schematic side view of a turret and a weapon mounting according to the invention and according to a second pointing configuration;
  • [ Fig.5 ]: front three-quarter view of a turret according to the invention with personnel on board.

According to figure 1 , a tank turret 100 includes a weapon mounting 1. Weapon mount 1 has 2 trunnions (which will be best seen at the picture 2 ), integral with the turret 100 at the level of a mounting 3 integral with the shell 4 of the turret 100.

The weapon assembly 1 comprises a large caliber weapon 5a (caliber greater than 40 mm) integral with the assembly 1 at the level of the pins which constitute axes 2 of pivoting in elevation for the oscillating weight 10 carrying the weapon 5a.

In a conventional manner well known to those skilled in the art, oscillating weight 10 designates all the elements of the weapon assembly 1 which pivot in elevation around the journals 2.

The term recoiling mass 5 designates all the elements of the weapon assembly 1 which recoil when shooting.

More precisely, an oscillating mass 10 comprises in particular the recoiling mass 5 and the cradle which receives and guides the latter during recoil.

A recoiling mass 5 comprises in particular the weapon 5a itself with its tube and its breech 8 and the part of the recoil brakes (not shown) which accompanies the recoil (the fixed part of the brakes remains linked to the cradle).

La seconde extrémité de chaque bras 6 comporte un contrepoids 7.Each pin 2 is secured to a first end of an arm 6 located on either side of the oscillating weight 10. The second end of each arm 6 includes a counterweight 7.

Each counterweight 7 here comprises an armor plate 7a substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the recoiling mass 5 of the weapon 5a in order to ballistically protect the parts of the turret 100 situated behind these plates 7a. The counterweights may advantageously comprise functional means of the turret, that is to say means exercising an operational function other than that of counterweight, for example target acquisition equipment (sights, designators) or defense equipment (secondary armaments, turrets, close defense systems...).

Le montage d'arme 1 seul avec la masse reculante 5 de l'arme 5a et ses contrepoids 7 est mieux vu sur la figure 2.A first counterweight 7 located to the right of the recoiling mass 5 comprises for example a sight 7b whereas a second counterweight 7 here comprises a secondary armament 7e which comprises a grenade launcher 7c as well as a medium caliber machine gun 7d. The weapon assembly 1 alone with the recoiling mass 5 of the weapon 5a and its counterweights 7 is best seen on the picture 2 .

As seen at picture 3 the counterweights 7 formed by the armor plates and the various equipment have the function, thanks to the position of their center of gravity T, of counterbalancing the weight of the recoiling mass 5 which is exerted at its center of gravity G, by placing the center of gravity I of the oscillating mass 10 of the weapon assembly 1 at the level of the pins 2. In this way the pointing efforts in elevation of the weapon 5 are minimal.

To size the counterweights 7 and their distance relative to the journals, the skilled person needs to know the distance D from the center of gravity G of the recoil mass 5 relative to the journals 2.

This evaluation is conventionally done today using computer-aided design means.

It is understood that in accordance with the invention the position of the center of gravity G of the recoiling mass is located in front of the journals 2 and creates an imbalance leading to a pivoting of the oscillating mass 10 around the journals 2. The center of gravity of the part of the oscillating weight 10 which does not incorporate the recoiling weight 5 has a fixed location and it depends in particular on the importance of the unbalance constituted by the counterweights 7.

It is easy by computer-aided design to determine the magnitude of the counterweights to be put in place (mass of the counterweight 7 and length of the arm 6) to compensate for a given advance G of the center of gravity of the recoiling mass 5 with respect to the trunnion axis 2.

En effet, conformément à l'invention, afin d'éviter une intrusion de la masse reculante 5 en dessous du plan de pose 101, on va tout d'abord avancer le centre de gravité G de la masse reculante 5 en procédant de la façon suivante :Indeed, in accordance with the invention, in order to avoid an intrusion of the recoiling mass 5 below the laying plane 101, we will first of all advance the center of gravity G of the recoiling mass 5 by proceeding as next :

For this as the figure 4 , for a given height H of the trunnions 2 relative to the laying plane 101, the skilled person places the recoiling weight 5 of the weapon 5a at its maximum recoil R and he also orients the oscillating weight 10 at its site α maximum in such a way that the breech 8 is above the mounting plane 101 of the weapon assembly 1.

En laissant revenir l'arme en batterie, l'Homme du Métier obtient donc quelle doit être la position du centre de gravité G de la masse reculante 5 au repos par rapport aux tourillons 2.By letting the weapon return to battery, the skilled person therefore obtains what must be the position of the center of gravity G of the recoiling mass 5 at rest with respect to the journals 2.

Such a forward position with respect to the trunnions 2 implies that during firing at maximum power, the maximum recoil of the recoiling mass 5 places the end of travel of the breech 8 also notably further forward and close to the trunnions 2 compared to a weapon according to the state of the art which has the center of gravity of its recoiling mass 5 merged with the journals 2 when it is at rest.

Thanks to this offset of the center of gravity G of the recoiling mass 5 of the weapon forward, it is possible to dispense with equipping the turret with a turret well and the chassis of the vehicle will not have to include offensive opening.

Depending on the position of the center of gravity G of the recoiling mass 5 that he has chosen relative to the journals 2, the person skilled in the art will only have to position the center of gravity of the counterweights and choose their mass to counterbalance the unbalance created by the recoiling weight 5 and thus positioning the center of gravity of the oscillating weight 10 at the level of the journals 2. The operating mode has been described above and will involve computer-aided design tools.

This positioning of the center of gravity of the oscillating mass 10 at the level of the journals 2 is of course effective when the recoiling mass 5 is at rest.

We have seen that the counterweight 7 can incorporate at least one functional means such as a secondary weapon 7d. This armament may include its own means of aiming in elevation to allow firing with a different orientation than that of the recoiling mass 5.

Lorsque le moyen fonctionnel est constitué par un viseur 7b il pourra lui aussi être associé à des moyens permettant l'orientation du viseur indépendamment de celle de la masse reculante 5.When the functional means is constituted by a sight 7b it may also be associated with means allowing the orientation of the sight independently of that of the recoiling mass 5.

  2. - The weapon assembly (1) according to claim 1, characterised in that it comprises two arms (6) located on either side of the oscillating mass (10), each arm (6) carrying a counterweight (7).
  3. - The weapon assembly (1) according to one of claims 1 or 2, characterised in that the secondary weapon (7e) comprises a grenade launcher (7c).
  4. - The weapon assembly (1) according to one of claims 1 or 2, characterised in that the secondary weapon (7e) comprises a medium-caliber machine gun (7d).
  5. - A turret (100) for a military vehicle, able to pivot in relative bearing about a rolling bearing separating the turret (100) from the vehicle and defining a mounting plane (101), which turret (100) is characterised in that it comprises a weapon assembly (1) according to one of the preceding claims, in which assembly (1) the distance D between the trunnions (2) and the center of gravity (G) of the recoiling mass (5) for a given height (H) of the mounting plane (101) is chosen such that when the oscillating mass (10) is at its maximum elevation and the recoiling mass (5) is at its maximum recoil, the recoiling mass (5) is located above the mounting plane (101).
