Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for etching or dissolving a hard material coating.
- Cutting tools in the metalworking sector are exposed to high mechanical and thermal loads.
- these tools are manufactured in such a way that a base body is coated with hard materials on the work surfaces after mechanical manufacture.
- These hard materials are usually compounds of refractory metals (elements of the 4th, 5th and 6th subgroups of the periodic table, i.e. Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and W) with the elements B, C, N, O, Al and Si.
- the object of the present invention was therefore to provide a safe method for removing a hard material coating from a base body in which the base body is not damaged.
- This object is achieved by a method for etching or dissolving a hard material coating, characterized in that the hard material coating is treated in an aqueous solution, the aqueous solution comprising ferrate and a strong base.
- Ferrate is a hexavalent iron ion of the formula [FeO 4 ] 2- .
- the ferrate in solution is a dissolved alkali metal ferrate.
- the alkali metal ferrate is potassium ferrate.
- the solution preferably has a pH of> 13.
- the strong base is preferably a dissolved alkali metal hydroxide. It is preferably provided that the alkali metal hydroxide comprises NaOH; the alkali metal hydroxide NaOH is particularly preferred.
- the hard material coating is applied to a metallic base body, the hard material coating only partially covering the metallic base body.
- those areas on the metallic base body without a hard material coating are coated with a cobalt layer prior to the treatment in the aqueous solution comprising ferrate and a strong base.
- the cobalt layer is preferably applied by electroplating.
- a selective, thin galvanic coating of the hard metal substrate limits the attack on the base body.
- a special variant provides that the treatment takes place in an electrolytic cell.
- the electrolytic cell comprises an aqueous solution with a pH value> 13, two electrodes made of iron or unalloyed steel and a rectifier which is connected to the electrodes. After activation, ferrate can be produced in solution with such a cell in situ.
- the base body with a hard material coating is placed between the electrodes to remove the coating.
- the hard material coating can have at least one refractory metal selected from the group Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo or W and have at least one element from the group B, C, N, O, Al or Si.
- the coating TiN, AlTiN or AlCrN is particularly preferred.
- the aqueous solution is heated to a temperature of 40.degree. C. to 80.degree. C., preferably 50.degree. C. to 70.degree.
- the aqueous solution can then be completely removed after part of the treatment period and replaced by a fresh aqueous solution.
- the method can therefore provide that the aqueous solution is essentially completely removed after a part of the treatment period and a fresh aqueous solution is then added.
- aqueous solution can be removed continuously and fresh aqueous solution added continuously.
- a kind of steady-state i.e. a dynamic equilibrium
- a dynamic equilibrium can be set on the discharged, used solution and on the supplied, fresh solution.
- the base body with a hard material coating is a tool, preferably a cutting or grinding tool.
- the tool has a base body made of high-speed steel or hard metal.
- the component to be stripped i.e. the base body with a hard material coating
- the component to be stripped can be contacted and polarized during the process. This polarization can take place under constant current or pulsed.
- the invention therefore relates to an aqueous solution comprising 0.05 mmol / l to 0.23 mol / l potassium ferrate at a pH value of> 13.
- Another aspect of the invention relates to an electrolytic cell comprising an aqueous solution with a pH value> 13, two electrodes made of iron or unalloyed steel and a rectifier which is connected to the electrodes.
- Such a cell can be used to produce ferrate in solution in situ.
- the base body with a hard material coating is placed between the electrodes to remove the coating.
- the examples examined are tools that have a base body made of high-speed steel or hard metal. These were each provided with a hard material coating made of TiN / AlTiN or AlCrN. The hard material coating was incomplete because it was essential for the task to check that uncoated parts of the sample are not attacked.
- Sodium ferrate is not commercially available because it is so soluble that it cannot be obtained as a solid from its solution (see point 7 above).
- the solubility of potassium ferrate is significantly lower, it can be precipitated by KOH, so it is commercially available.
- Potassium ferrate in 5M sodium hydroxide solution was used for the experiments in order to achieve medium solubility.
- a crosal-plus® (AlCrN) hard-material-coated hard metal disc was used as a sample, since crosal-plus® is easier to oxidize than exxtral-plus® (AlTiN).
- the experiment was carried out at about 60 ° C., where the solution was changed every 10 minutes, since the ferrate slowly decomposes under these conditions with evolution of oxygen.
- the stripping test was carried out for about 1 hour.
- FIGS. 1 and 5 there is a slight attack on the cobalt matrix of the hard metal under the conditions used.
- the attack is also from the EDX spectrum ( Fig. 2 ) readable; the cobalt peak is significantly weaker than with pure hard metal.
- FIGS. 3 and 6 show a clearly visible etching attack on the crosal® layer; the The composition of the layer is not changed by the etching ( Fig. 4 ), that is, no constituent is preferentially extracted.
- Ferrate (as sodium or potassium salt) can also be used as a green alternative to the existing stripping systems. Ferrat can be used in a variety of ways. It could not only serve to decoat the described systems, but also in general for treatment, for etching surfaces.
- FIG. 7 Another particularly preferred embodiment is the electrochemical in-situ production of ferrate ( Fig. 7 ).
- This comprises an electrolysis cell (D), filled with an aqueous solution of 150 g / L NaOH (C), which is heated to 60 ° C.
- Two sheets of iron or mild steel (A and B) serve as electrodes and are connected to a rectifier (F).
- F rectifier

Abstract
Method for etching or dissolving a hard material coating from a base body, characterized in that the hard material coating is treated in an aqueous solution, the aqueous solution comprising ferrate and a strong base.
Description
The present invention relates to a method for etching or dissolving a hard material coating.
Nebengruppe des Periodensystems, also Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo und W) mit den Elementen B, C, N, O, Al und Si.Cutting tools in the metalworking sector, especially milling cutters, are exposed to high mechanical and thermal loads. To improve the cutting performance and to extend the service life, these tools are manufactured in such a way that a base body is coated with hard materials on the work surfaces after mechanical manufacture. These hard materials are usually compounds of refractory metals (elements of the 4th, 5th and 6th subgroups of the periodic table, i.e. Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and W) with the elements B, C, N, O, Al and Si.
Despite the great hardness and abrasion resistance, these hard material coatings wear out during use, so that at the end of the service life the hard material coating no longer meets the requirements. In order to be able to continue using the main body of the tool, which is usually undamaged, it must be coated again. For the successful application of a hard material coating using vacuum technology (PVD or CVD) it is necessary that the surface of the base body to be coated is free of disruptive impurities. The remains of a previous coating are also among the most important contaminants.
The object of the present invention was therefore to provide a safe method for removing a hard material coating from a base body in which the base body is not damaged.
This object is achieved by a method for etching or dissolving a hard material coating, characterized in that the hard material coating is treated in an aqueous solution, the aqueous solution comprising ferrate and a strong base.
Ferrate is a hexavalent iron ion of the formula [FeO 4 ] 2- . In a preferred embodiment, the ferrate in solution is a dissolved alkali metal ferrate. In a preferred embodiment it is provided that the alkali metal ferrate is potassium ferrate.
The solution preferably has a pH of> 13.
The strong base is preferably a dissolved alkali metal hydroxide. It is preferably provided that the alkali metal hydroxide comprises NaOH; the alkali metal hydroxide NaOH is particularly preferred.
In one embodiment it is provided that the hard material coating is applied to a metallic base body, the hard material coating only partially covering the metallic base body. For all these design variants, it can preferably be provided that those areas on the metallic base body without a hard material coating are coated with a cobalt layer prior to the treatment in the aqueous solution comprising ferrate and a strong base.
The cobalt layer is preferably applied by electroplating. A selective, thin galvanic coating of the hard metal substrate limits the attack on the base body.
A special variant provides that the treatment takes place in an electrolytic cell. This enables the ferrate in the solution to be produced and provided electrochemically in situ in the electrolytic cell. For this purpose, the electrolytic cell comprises an aqueous solution with a pH value> 13, two electrodes made of iron or unalloyed steel and a rectifier which is connected to the electrodes. After activation, ferrate can be produced in solution with such a cell in situ. The base body with a hard material coating is placed between the electrodes to remove the coating.
Die Hartstoffbeschichtung kann zumindest ein Refraktärmetall ausgewählt aus der Gruppe Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo oder W aufweisen und zumindest ein Element aus der Gruppe B, C, N, O, Al oder Si aufweisen. Besonders bevorzugt ist die Beschichtung TiN, AlTiN oder AlCrN.The hard material coating can have at least one refractory metal selected from the group Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo or W and have at least one element from the group B, C, N, O, Al or Si. The coating TiN, AlTiN or AlCrN is particularly preferred.
It has proven to be advantageous if the aqueous solution is heated to a temperature of 40.degree. C. to 80.degree. C., preferably 50.degree. C. to 70.degree.
Since solutions with ferrate decompose chemically under the reaction conditions, it has proven to be advantageous if the aqueous solution containing ferrate and a strong base is at least partially renewed after part of the treatment time.
In the simplest case, the aqueous solution can then be completely removed after part of the treatment period and replaced by a fresh aqueous solution. The method can therefore provide that the aqueous solution is essentially completely removed after a part of the treatment period and a fresh aqueous solution is then added.
Alternatively, after a part of the treatment time, aqueous solution can be removed continuously and fresh aqueous solution added continuously. Here a kind of steady-state (i.e. a dynamic equilibrium) can be set on the discharged, used solution and on the supplied, fresh solution.
It is preferably provided that the base body with a hard material coating is a tool, preferably a cutting or grinding tool. In one embodiment it is provided that the tool has a base body made of high-speed steel or hard metal.
In addition, the component to be stripped, i.e. the base body with a hard material coating, can be contacted and polarized during the process. This polarization can take place under constant current or pulsed.

The examples examined are tools that have a base body made of high-speed steel or hard metal. These were each provided with a hard material coating made of TiN / AlTiN or AlCrN. The hard material coating was incomplete because it was essential for the task to check that uncoated parts of the sample are not attacked.
At the beginning of the stripping tests, the initial state of the samples was recorded by means of SEM. The circular blanks provided were wrapped with wire to make contact and all sides, with the exception of half of the front surfaces, were coated with masking varnish. As a result, in the subsequent examinations, for example in the scanning electron microscope, direct comparability with the initial state is given.
- 1. It is a stronger oxidizer than potassium permanganate.
- 2. The solubility is higher.
- 3. The oxidation effect can be adjusted via the pH value.
- 4. The oxidation of tungsten produces insoluble iron tungstate.
- 5. Iron / steel substrates are passivated and therefore not attacked.
- 6. In the industrial process, ferrate can be produced inexpensively in situ electrochemically from iron anodes, which circumvents the problem of instability.
- 7. When using caustic soda as an electrolyte, very high concentrations can be achieved.
- 8. Insoluble iron hydroxide is produced as a waste product, which can easily be removed from the solution
- 9. All chemicals required for this are ecologically harmless, a ferrate-based stripping process is an example of "green chemistry"
Zur leichteren Beurteilung der Eignung dieses Oxidationsmittels wurde als Probe eine crosal-plus® (AlCrN) Hartstoffbeschichtete Hartmetallronde verwendet, da crosal-plus® leichter oxidierbar ist als exxtral-plus® (AlTiN).Sodium ferrate is not commercially available because it is so soluble that it cannot be obtained as a solid from its solution (see
The experiment was carried out at about 60 ° C., where the solution was changed every 10 minutes, since the ferrate slowly decomposes under these conditions with evolution of oxygen. The stripping test was carried out for about 1 hour.
It could be shown that with an electrolyte system it is possible to electrochemically remove PVD layers from both hard metal and high-speed steel without attacking the base material over a large area. These experiments were only carried out with direct current; It is to be expected that the slight pitting corrosion observed can be eliminated by optimizing the electrolyte and switching from direct current to pulsed current.
Furthermore, the approach was successfully tested to protect exposed substrate surfaces prior to decoating with a galvanically applied cobalt layer from attack by the decoating process. By optimizing this coating in terms of selectivity and impermeability of the cobalt protective layer, attack on the substrate can be practically completely ruled out.
In embodiments where a cobalt layer was applied in those areas on the metallic base body without a hard material coating before the treatment, the base body could be better protected prior to the actual treatment. By optimizing this coating in terms of selectivity and impermeability of the cobalt protective layer, attack on the substrate can be practically completely ruled out.
Ferrate (as sodium or potassium salt) can also be used as a green alternative to the existing stripping systems. Ferrat can be used in a variety of ways. It could not only serve to decoat the described systems, but also in general for treatment, for etching surfaces.
