Definitions
- the heating of asphalt materials during the roads maintenance and repairs takes place by means of direct heating by flame, infrared radiation or microwave radiation.
- Utilisation of the microwave heating is limited by uniformity of the heated material.
- the invention concerns the device for repair of road pavement by asphalt material, which ensures quick and uniform concentration of energy to determined location in the vicinity of a pothole and an optimum warming-through of material.
- Potholes in the wearing course belongs to surface failures of the asphalt road pavement, caused by the effects of traffic load or by imperfect joining of the wearing and bed courses at the simultaneous action of climatic effects.
- the potholes occur in particular at alternating of plus and minus temperatures, when failure of the wearing course, or road pavement cover, respectively, consistence occurs and a sharply bordered failure originates, so called pothole, which extends through the whole wearing course of the road pavement. Subsequently its surface and depth are continuously increasing, it is spread to road pavement surface area and following is disintegration of the road pavement wearing course or complete disintegration of asphalt layers and road pavement.
- any pothole subsequently influences the road traffic safety, smoothness and comfort.
- the growing pothole increases also the costs of the traffic means operation and maintenance, but mainly there is also a risk to human lives, health and property.
- the gas burners or infrared radiators are used for asphalt heating.
- the disadvantage consists in the necessity to utilise the temperatures higher than the critical temperature of asphalt degradation, since due to its low thermal conductivity asphalt is not able to transmit temperature efficiently into the whole heated layer. Therefore it is necessary to ensure a continuous permanent mixing in these devices, which is not always technically feasible, and concerning heating of the road pavement asphalt surfaces it is completely out of question.
- the microwave heating of asphalt material and of surface of the pothole in the road pavement and its vicinity tries to remove the above disadvantages.
- the microwave heating enables heating of the asphalt material volume, i.e. the whole volume up to required depth, without respect to its low thermal conductivity. With the microwave heating utilising the waves penetrate asphalt mixture to approximately 120 mm depth.
- the disadvantage of this way is non-uniform character of the microwave radiation flow, which affects the heated surface.
- the above problem has been resolved to a certain level by material turning or shifting, which is possibly complemented by deflectors, which have to homogenise the microwave radiation.
- deflectors which have to homogenise the microwave radiation.
- the rotating blade deflectors are used, which are located in the wave ducts, leading the microwave radiation from its source to the food heating point.
- the basic difficulty of the asphalt surface heating by means of microwaves is assurance of a uniform action of energy on asphalt surface within the device working area.
- heating period control i.e. control of resulting temperature of the heated asphalt, in particular at heating of asphalt road pavements surface.
- the temperature is not measured and it is influenced by experience of the operator and by correct setting of the heating period only.
- the heating devices are not able to record temperature of the heated material and to transmit it for further processing, filing or control of the heating process within optimal range.
- US 3 601 448 A envisages simple heating of the asphalt layer regardless of the possible thermaloxidative degradation of the asphalt binder, because its aim is only to heat the asphalt layer so that it can be more easily removed, not repaired.
- the propellers according to the US patent do not ensure homogeneous heating of the asphalt layer, because part of the microwaves passes through the space between the coaxial propellers unaffected and creates inhomogeneities in the heating of the surface.
- the cited U.S. patent provides an invention for tearing solid materials through a temperature difference causing thermal expansion of the material heated by microwaves. It does not address the homogeneity and gentle heating of the material at all, which is an important part of the applicant's patent. On the contrary, the inhomogeneity of the application of microwaves to the material and thus the formation of temperature and volume differences in the material is a condition of the function of the US patent. The use of a US patent will not produce the result required for the applicant's patent.
- D1 describes a method of removing asphalt from concrete
- the propellers do not demonstrably create such homogeneity as applicant's eccentric plates and therefore the applicant's solution advances the state of the art.
- the device according to invention the substance of which consists in the fact that it is provided with at least one microwave generator and a control system, where the outlet chamber is provided by at least one mixer, on which at least one deflector is set.
- the deflector is fixed on rotary shaft and it has a circular shape, while the deflector plane forms an angle of 20 to 70 degrees with vertical plane.
- the rotary shaft for the deflectors is horizontal and deflectors fixed on it have different diameters, from 100 to 350 millimetres.
- the control system is linked partly with the device for measuring temperature of the heated mixture and/or repaired asphalt surface, and partly with drive of the rotary shafts.
- the microwave generator and the control system may be seated on a chassis, which is provided with the steering tow bar with a single front driving wheel, and it is provided with a fan with cooling air distributions or with water cooling.
- the cooling air system is provided with a heating element, which enables the system controlled drying of humidity in the microwave generator is in case of increased humidity condensing.
- the bottom perimeter of the outlet chamber is provided with the screening brush made of carbon fibres.
- Driving shafts of the mixers are linked with the motors by flexible coupling and they are seated in the outlet chamber by means of bearings.
- the mixers are provided with optical gate and a disc with a slot.
- the outlet chamber may be provided with optical camera or thermal camera.
- the equipment according to the invention is suitable in particular for operative repairs of road pavement and other asphalt surfaces with a year-round operation possibility, i.e. without respect to the ambient temperature.
- the device utilises the physical phenomenon, when with the substances absorbing the microwaves, in electrical field orientation of molecules occurs according to polarity, which in case of the high-frequency electromagnetic field changes many times per second. This will cause oscillation vibrations, rotation, friction and collisions of molecules. This is manifested as heat, hence the microwave energy is changed into the thermal energy.
- the asphalt material is uniformly heated within the whole cross-section, since the microwave radiation penetrates the whole wearing course of the asphalt surface. At this no degradation of asphalt binder by material overheating occurs and the uniform heating enables optimal control of temperature, to which the material is heated.
- the device according to the invention enables heating of asphalt mixtures in an energy-saving way, while it is applicable also for repairs of wet or frozen points, since thanks to effect of the homogenous microwave radiation a complete drying up of the repaired point occurs.
- the device according to the invention doesn't require application of any binding agent or sealing material, since by heating of the pothole vicinity and addition of the hot packaged asphalt mixture a perfectly strong and homogenous connection will result.
- Indispensable is also environmental contribution, since a simplification of the technological process and transport of the necessary repair material, waste material and energy used occurs.

Further circuit breaker protects and supplies source of the control voltage 24V and synchronous motors of the mixers drive. Independent circuit breakers protect the circuits of power supply to microwave generators.
- the device for heating of asphalt and similar mixtures and repairs of asphalt surfaces according to the invention is utilised in the following way. First it is necessary to perform cleaning of the repaired surface, i.e. removal of all freed parts of the original surface and other dirt in the pothole, e.g. by compressed air, and further also possible drying of the repaired surface.
- bonding primer Following is application of bonding primer onto the repaired surface, which will ensure more efficient absorption of microwave radiation and thus it concentrates the microwave heating to locations of application. At the same time the application of bonding primer treats the surface of damaged location of the road pavement by causing the asphalt substance polymerisation. Longer polymers of asphalt components have better mechanical and physical properties and longer durability.
- Subsequent heating is ensured by approximately 35 minute action of microwaves of e.g. 7.2 kW output, which is concentrated to the location treated with bonding primer. Duration of heating depends on initial temperature of surface and its humidity. With decreasing temperature and higher humidity the period necessary for heating to temperature over 110°C extends.
- the asphalt mixture is added to the repaired locations, the mixture being preheated to temperature within 120 - 140°C range in microwave oven, which is of similar concept as the described invention, only the microwave heating is ensured in enclosed volume of the oven.
- the mixture is added and levelled at slightly higher layer.
- the asphalt mixture is heated simultaneously with heating of the road pavement. Thanks to heating of the repair spot the system is not depending on operation of the asphalt mixing plants and it can utilise the in advance prepared hot asphalt mixture in cold state.
- asphalt is formed mostly by a mixture of non-polar hydrocarbons with reduced ability to absorb microwaves, causing their heating insufficient, it is possible to add various additives with high absorption of microwaves, i.e. the substances, which absorb energy simultaneously by electric and magnetic fields, into the asphalt mixtures.
- the present solution is usable for all devices utilising microwave heating, at necessity of assurance of maximum homogeneity of heating, none or limited movement of the heated material and requirement for a high mechanical resistance of the solution, e.g. with the mobile devices.
- the device is able to measure temperature of the heated material. This serves for reaching of optimal technological temperature, which may serve for automatic control of heating and for further processing, evaluation, sharing or filing.
