Definitions
- the invention relates to the use of a heat-sealable composite film for the packaging of moist and fatty foodstuffs, such as sliced sausage or cheese, with the composite film consisting of regenerated cellulose and a continuous coating of food-safe plastic based on acrylic, polyvinyl acetate (PVA) on the outside. and/or polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC).
- a heat-sealable composite film for the packaging of moist and fatty foodstuffs, such as sliced sausage or cheese, with the composite film consisting of regenerated cellulose and a continuous coating of food-safe plastic based on acrylic, polyvinyl acetate (PVA) on the outside. and/or polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC).
- PVA polyvinyl acetate
- PVDC polyvinylidene chloride
- regenerated cellulose also known as hydrated cellulose
- biodegradable films These transparent films are also used in food packaging. These films are usually only used for dry foods, such as biscuits, or as overpacking for cardboard packaging, for example. If moist and fatty foods are to be packaged in such films, the hydrated cellulose films must have an appropriate coating, since otherwise they would be permeable to moisture and fat or swell up as a result of the liquid absorption and quickly decompose.
- These coatings of non-biodegradable polymers are applied at appropriate thicknesses to make the film overall suitable for packaging moist and fatty foods.
- foils made from regenerated cellulose which have coatings with non-biodegradable plastics, the mass of the coatings within the composite film does not exceed a total of 5%. This means that according to the EN 13432 standard, the film is still considered compostable because it consists of at least 95% biodegradable regenerated cellulose.
- foils with such a thin coating again have the above-mentioned disadvantages that they are unsuitable for the packaging and storage of moist foodstuffs, such as sausage or cheese slices or meat, since they decompose too quickly.
- the DE 1779124 A describes, for example, a laminating process for two cellophane films coated on both sides. These can either be connected to each other only by heat, or by means of an adhesive. According to the disclosure, the proportion of the coating is DE 1779124 A1 between 5% and 15%. As mentioned above, a biodegradable film is also produced in the edge area. However, the publication does not disclose what the films mentioned are intended to be used for. In practice, films in the degradable range are only used for packaging dry goods, as they would otherwise quickly swell and be permeable, while films with thicker coatings made of polymers can also be used for goods containing moisture and fat, but are then no longer considered biodegradable .
- the DE 2102374 A1 discloses a film structure in which a layer of regenerated cellulose is laminated to a PET film and the cellulose layer is also covered with a PVDC coating.
- the film structure specifically serves as a packaging material for food served in snack bars.
- potato chips and peanuts are mentioned in detail here, which are fat, but usually not moist.
- the composite film does not necessarily consist of more than 95% by weight of regenerated cellulose and is no longer classified as biodegradable simply because of the presence of the PET film.
- the object of the invention is now to enable the use of a composite film for the packaging of moist and fatty foods, in which the composite film is biodegradable, but at the same time also for the packaging of moist and fatty foods such as cold cuts or cheese, meat or the like, does not swell or even become permeable within a very short time.
- the film should be as thin and clear as possible and should not differ in feel and appearance from conventional non-degradable plastic films.
- the film should also be weldable so that it can be used in automated packaging lines.
- a composite film according to claim 1 which consists of at least 95% by weight regenerated cellulose and in which the cellulose layer inside the composite film is in two layers, the two layers being separated from one another by two layers of food-safe plastic which are the same as that of the outer coating and at least one adhesive layer is provided between the two inner layers of food grade plastic.
- Food-safe plastic means those substances that correspond to the catalog of properties in food chemistry, which is specified in the respective laws and standards for the use of different materials for food packaging is recorded and is required by the respective legislation. The average person skilled in the art is therefore familiar with which substances he has to select in this regard.
- the layers of regenerated cellulose are first provided with the coating of non-degradable plastic on both sides.
- One or also both cellulose layers can then be printed at least in sections on the coating side lying on the inside at the end.
- Food-safe and/or biodegradable printing inks are also used for printing.
- the two now fully coated and printed cellulose layers are connected to one another by means of an adhesive layer, with the printed sections then lying on the inside. This completes the composite film.
- the application of the imprint on the inside of the composite film has the advantage that the film remains fully weldable on the outside when used in a welding system and corresponding weld seams are not impeded by any imprints.
- the production of the film can thus be simplified, since imprints no longer have to be matched to the appropriate formats depending on the packaging, but can be arranged continuously over the entire film. Welding at any point on the film remains possible.
- the composite film used has a thickness in the range from 30 to 80 ⁇ m, preferably from 45 to 50 ⁇ m.
- This film thickness has proven particularly advantageous for use in automatic packaging lines with a welding device, for example for the packaging of cold cuts or cheese. Thinner films cannot meet shelf life requirements fair because they swell up too quickly and start to decompose. Thicker films present problems of handling in the automatic packaging lines and result in incomplete seals, which is also disadvantageous.
- a layer structure of a composite film for use according to the invention is shown schematically, with the layer thicknesses being shown greatly enlarged for a better view.
- the layer thicknesses are also not shown in the correct scale in relation to one another.
- the two cellulose layers 2 are each provided with a continuous coating 1 made of non-degradable plastic based on acrylic, PVA and/or PVDC on the side facing outwards. On the inside they also have a coating 3 made of the same plastic, with all layer thicknesses of the coatings 1,3 being the same thickness and, based on the entire composite film, accounting for only about 4% of the total mass. Between the two inner coatings 3 there are sections of prints 5 and an adhesive layer 4. The prints and the adhesive layer together make up a maximum of 1% of the total mass.
- an adhesive based on a polyol or a polyurethane adhesive can be used as the adhesive.
- the film for use according to the invention has significantly improved properties at 46 ⁇ m and a structure with a total of 4 coating layers and two cellulose layers than, for example, a film with a comparable thickness of 45 ⁇ m and coatings only on the outside. Since the total mass of the coatings in all cases is only 4% of the total composite film is, this means that in the case of the comparison film, with 45 ⁇ m, the outer coatings are significantly thicker than in the case of the composite film provided for use according to the invention with a total of 4 plastic coatings.
- the film intended for use according to the invention shows a clear improvement in all properties compared to the comparison film with 45 ⁇ m.
- the properties of the film for use according to the invention are even superior to that of a comparison film that is almost twice as thick and only has coatings on the outside, particularly since the thicker film can no longer be processed in the automated welding devices.
- the composite film for the use according to the invention consequently solves the task of creating a biodegradable packaging film that is easy to process and that is also suitable for moist and fatty foods.
- the composite film offers a simple way of printing product identification and the like within the composite film without impairing the subsequent welding workflow.
