Definitions
- the field of the present invention is that of the regulation of fluid flow rates, and in particular the regulation of very small flow rates such as the propellant gas supply flow rates of space electric thrusters.
- the invention applies in a preferred but non-limiting manner to an ion or plasma propulsion engine of the type used for space electric propulsion, in particular for the propulsion of geostationary telecommunications satellites.
- the state of the art includes in particular the document referenced XP055445829 (“New generation Propellant Flow Control components for Electric Propulsion systems: Status of achievements at Alcatel Alesia space Italia/Laben-Proel; IEPC-2005-23” by G. Matticari et al .) published on October 31, 2005, and the document WO-A1-2015/086982 .
- thermo-capillary that is to say an electrically conductive capillary conduit which can be connected to a source of electrical current.
- Such an electric current passing through the capillary conduit will cause it to heat up by the Joule effect, heating which will modify the flow conditions of the fluid in the capillary conduit, and therefore the mass flow rate of fluid passing through the capillary conduit for a pressure determined power supply.
- the flow controller must therefore be sized to provide higher or lower flow rates, while allowing the plasma thruster not to operate on a single operating point but to offer it a real range of operating points. In other words, the flow controller must be capable of providing a wider flow range compared to the state of the art.
- the difficulties linked to such an implementation are diverse.
- the capillary conduit must be robust to high temperatures. Indeed, given the small dimensions of such a tube, the resistivity of this tube is high, and the Joule effect generates temperatures which can be around 1000°C. In addition, the greater the flow range, the more it is necessary to use high temperatures.
- the capillary conduit is today generally made from a stainless steel, for example X2CrNi18-10 steel.
- This material has the particularity of being relatively ductile at 20°C, which facilitates its use during bending. Additionally, this material can be brazed easily on other parts, which makes its integration into a structure affordable.
- the disadvantage is that this material degrades, thus leading to a modification of the flow conditions within the capillary tube, which implies a reduction in the maximum gas flow rate (obtained at zero current). In fact, the capillary conduit deteriorates when it is subjected for several hours to a current of a few amperes (3 to 4 A).
- a flow controller establishes its performance on an electrical current which can vary from 0 to 4 A (0 A corresponding to the maximum flow rate, 4 A corresponding to the minimum flow rate).
- the degradation of the capillary tube which can even cause the tube to rupture and thus leak any quantity of xenon, generally results in a reduction in the fluidic section within the tube. Consequently, the maximum flow rate reached at 0 A is impacted by the preliminary application of a higher intensity current.
- the flow range of the controller is then reduced by at least 10%.
- An alternative would be to limit the thermo-capillary current to between 0 and 2 A for example. This alternative has the drawback of reducing the flow range of the controller by approximately 40%, which is strongly detrimental to the performance of a plasma thruster.
- the present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks, by proposing a device for regulating the flow of propellant fluid for an electric thruster, provided with a robust capillary conduit which makes it possible to provide a wider range of propellant fluid flow, while controlling the dimensions of the thermo-capillary conduit.
- the subject of the invention is thus a device for regulating the flow of propellant fluid for an electric propeller, of the thermo-capillary device type comprising at least one electrically conductive capillary conduit and capable of regulating the flow of propellant fluid under the action of a modification of temperature of the conduit, said at least one capillary conduit being connected to a source of electric current such that such an electric current passing through the capillary conduit causes heating of the capillary conduit by Joule effect.
- said at least one capillary conduit comprises a nickel-based alloy.
- nickel-based alloy an alloy which comprises at least 50% by weight of nickel.
- said at least one capillary conduit is made of a nickel-based alloy, that is to say that the conduit only comprises said alloy.
- the nickel-based alloy may comprise at least one element chosen from chromium, iron, manganese, copper, niobium and molybdenum.
- the nickel-based alloy may, for example, comprise iron.
- the iron content may be less than or equal to 10% of the weight of the alloy.
- the nickel-based alloy may include iron and chromium.
- the nickel-based alloy is chosen from a) an alloy comprising at least 72% by weight of nickel, from 14 to 17% by weight of chromium and from 6 to 10% by weight of iron, b) a alloy comprising at least 58% by weight of nickel, 20 to 23% by weight of chromium and an iron content less than or equal to 5% by weight, and c) an alloy comprising 50 to 55% by weight of nickel and from 17 to 21% by weight of chromium.
- the nickel-based alloy can be chosen from the alloys marketed under the name Inconel ® by the company Special Metals Corporation, and in particular from the alloys Inconel ® 600, Inconel ® 625, and Inconel ® 718.
- the RA 602 CA ® alloy is an alloy comprising, in percentage by weight, 24 to 26% chromium, 0.15 to 0.25% carbon, 1.8 to 2.4% aluminum, from 0.1 to 0.2% titanium, from 0.05 to 0.12% yttrium, from 0.01 to 0.10% zirconium, at most 0.15% manganese, at most 0, 5% silicon, at most 0.1% copper, 8 to 11% iron, the remainder being nickel.

- the propellant fluid can be xenon or krypton.
- the invention also relates to an electric thruster.
- the electric thruster according to the invention comprises a device described above.
- the electric thruster is typically a Hall effect plasma thruster.
- the invention relates to a satellite.
- the satellite according to the invention comprises an electric thruster described above.
- FIG. 1 generally illustrates a Hall effect plasma thruster 10.
- a central magnetic coil 12 surrounds a central core 14 extending along a main longitudinal axis A.
- An annular internal wall 16 encircles the central coil 12.
- This internal wall 16 is surrounded by an external annular wall 18, the annular walls 16 and 18 delimiting an annular discharge channel 20 extending around the main axis A.
- the internal wall 16 and the external wall 18 form part of a unique ceramic piece 19.
- upstream and downstream are defined in relation to the normal flow direction of the gas (from upstream to downstream) through the discharge channel 20.
- the upstream end 20a of the discharge channel 20 (on the left on the figure 1 ) is closed by an injection system 22 composed of a pipe 24 for supplying ionizable gas (generally xenon), the pipe 24 being connected by a supply hole 25 to an anode 26 serving as a distributor for the injection of gas molecules into the discharge channel 20.
- ionizable gas generally xenon
- the downstream end 20b of the discharge channel 20 is open (on the right on the figure 1 ).
- peripheral magnetic windings 30 having an axis parallel to the main axis A are arranged all around the external wall 18.
- the central magnetic winding 12 and the windings external magnetics make it possible to generate a radial magnetic field B whose intensity is maximum at the downstream end 20b of the discharge channel 20.
- a hollow cathode 40 is arranged outside the peripheral coils 30, its output being oriented in order to eject electrons in the direction of the main axis A and the area located downstream of the downstream end 20b of the discharge channel 20. A potential difference is established between the cathode 40 and the anode 26.
- the electrons thus ejected are partly directed inside the discharge channel 20. Some of these electrons reach, under the influence of the electric field generated between the cathode 40 and the anode 26, as far as the anode 26, while that the majority of them are trapped by the intense magnetic field B in the vicinity of the downstream end 20b of the discharge channel 20.
- the gas molecules flowing from upstream to downstream in the discharge channel 20 are ionized by the electrons with which they collide.
- the electrons present in the discharge channel 20 create an axial electric field E which accelerates the ions between the anode 26 and the downstream outlet 20b of the discharge channel 20 such that these ions are ejected at high speed from the channel discharge 20, which generates propulsion of the engine.
- the invention relates more particularly to the power system of the electric thruster.
- current thrusters require a low regulated gas flow to obtain constant thrust.
- This flow is created from a reservoir and a pressure regulator which brings the pressure into a constant range, with the flow then regulated to supply the necessary amount of gas to the motor and hollow cathode.
- This regulation is usually done by a thermo-capillary tube supplied with current and by flow restrictors allowing distribution of the propellant fluid between the anode and the cathode.
- FIG. 2 illustrates a power supply system 50 of the electric thruster 10 according to the invention.
- This supply system 50 comprises a high pressure tank 1 of ionizable gas, for example xenon or krypton, connected, by a pipe 51, to a low pressure buffer tank 2.
- a high pressure tank 1 of ionizable gas for example xenon or krypton
- the volume of the low pressure buffer tank 2 is approximately 1 liter.
- the pressure in the high pressure tank 1 varies from 150 bars to approximately 1 bar; that in the low pressure buffer tank 2 varies between approximately 1.5 and 3 bar.
- a restrictor 7 is placed on pipe 51 to relieve the pressure between the high pressure tank 1 and the low pressure buffer tank 2.
- Pipeline 51 also includes a valve 6 for regulating the gas flow between the high pressure tank 1 and the low pressure buffer tank 2.
- the supply system 50 comprises means 53 for controlling the opening and closing of the regulating valve 6 and measuring the pressure in the low pressure buffer tank 2 in cooperation with a pressure sensor 54.
- the supply system 50 comprises, downstream of the low pressure buffer tank 2, two stop valves V3, V4 a redundant stop valve V1 and a thermo-capillary 52 allowing fine adjustment of the gas flow towards the anode 26 and the cathode 40 respectively.
- Other structures are possible, for example we can consider that valve V1 is redundant and that valves V3 and V4 are absent.
- Restrictors 3 and 4 respectively associated with the cathode 40 and the anode 26 make it possible to distribute the gas flow between the cathode and the anode, namely approximately 8 to 10% towards the cathode and 90 to 92% towards the anode.
- the power supply system 50 also includes power electronics 81 capable of powering the motor and ignition electronics 82 capable of establishing a discharge current between the anode 26 and the cathode 40.
- Control software allows the sequencing of the engine ignition and control of the valves to supply gas and electricity to the propeller according to a determined sequence.
- the subsystem constituted by the control valve 6, the restrictor 7, the low pressure buffer tank 2, the means 53 for controlling the opening and closing of the control valve 6 and the pressure sensor 54 constitutes a PRG pressure regulation unit.
- the stop valve V1, the thermo-capillary 52, the restrictors 3, 4, and the valves V3, V4, constitute an RDX unit for regulating the flow of ionizing gas.
- the gas circulates in a thin tube, called a capillary tube.
- a capillary tube By applying an electric current to the capillary tube, it is then heated by the Joule effect.
- the tube being heated, the viscosity of the gas circulating there is modified and since the conditions of flow of the gas in the tube are also modified, so that it is possible to adjust the desired flow rate according to of the electric current applied to the tube.
- the RDX flow regulation unit must normally be able to regulate a very low mass flow rate of propellant gas supply, of the order of a few mg/s. This is why we use in a known way the thermo-capillary 52, in which the gas passes through a capillary conduit connected to a current source to regulate the gas flow by heating the capillary conduit by Joule effect.
- the flow control devices of the state of the art only make it possible to vary the flow rate over fairly narrow ranges, especially when the supply pressure is constant.
- the flow control device used in the Hall effect thruster marketed under the name PPS ® 1350 with a xenon supply pressure of 265 kPa, can only vary the flow rate over a range of 4 to 8 mg /s.
- thermo-capillary 52 a capillary conduit comprising a nickel-based alloy.
- a capillary conduit comprising a nickel-based alloy.
- Inconel ® the alloys marketed under the name Inconel ® by the company Special Metals Corporation, and in particular among the alloys Inconel ® 600, Inconel ® 625, and Inconel ® 718.
- Inconel ® 600 alloy is an alloy comprising, in percentage by weight, at least 72% nickel, 14 to 17% chromium, 6 to 10% iron, not more than 1% manganese, not more than 0, 5% copper, not more than 0.5% silicon, not more than 0.15% carbon and not more than 0.015% sulfur.
- Inconel ® 625 alloy is an alloy comprising, in percentage by weight, at least 58% nickel, 20 to 23% chromium, at most 5% iron, 8 to 10% molybdenum, 3.15 at 4.15% niobium, at most 1% cobalt, at most 0.5% manganese, at most 0.4% aluminum, at most 0.4% titanium, at most 0.5% silicon, not more than 0.1% carbon, not more than 0.015% sulfur and not more than 0.015% phosphorus.

- HAYNES ® 214 ® alloy is an alloy comprising, in percentage by weight, 16% chromium, 4.5% aluminum, 3% iron, not more than 2% cobalt, not more than 0.5% manganese , not more than 0.5% molybdenum, not more than 0.5% titanium, not more than 0.5% tungsten, not more than 0.15% niobium, not more than 0.2% silicon, not more than 0, 1% zirconium, 0.04% carbon, at most 0.01% boron, 0.01% yttrium, the remainder being nickel.
- HAYNES ® 230 ® alloy is an alloy comprising, in percentage by weight, 22% chromium, 14% tungsten, 2% molybdenum, not more than 3% iron, not more than 5% cobalt, 0.5% manganese, 0.4% silicon, not more than 0.5% niobium, 0.3% aluminum, not more than 0.1% titanium, 0.1% carbon, 0.02% lanthanum, at most 0.015% boron, the remainder being nickel.
- Changing the material for the capillary conduit involves changing all the physical parameters intrinsic to the latter, and in particular the thermal and electrical properties. Indeed, it was not obvious that the coupling of these properties would make it possible to respond to the operational constraints of thermo-capillary without significantly impacting its current definition.
- nickel-based alloys in particular the Inconel ® alloys mentioned above, make it possible to ensure the function of the thermo-capillary with ease over a wide range of propellant fluid flow.
- These alloys make it possible to resolve the problem linked to thermal limitation, while remaining compatible with the dimensional and integration constraints of existing flow controllers.
- these alloys make it possible to overcome the degradation mechanisms revealed at high temperatures on stainless steel capillary conduits. These degradation mechanisms include oxidation of the capillary tube, differential segregations of chromium and nickel within the material, on either side of the tube wall, as well as precipitation of chromium carbides.
