Definitions

  • the invention relates to a vehicle with a retractable stair assembly.
  • Vehicles such as rail vehicles, may be operated in narrow tunnels such that the side doors are blocked for evacuation in the event of a fault. Emergency exits on the front or back of the carriage can be required. To reach the track level, ladders or stairs are usually required.
  • a particular challenge here is a coupler provided in front of the vehicle and protruding from the front of the vehicle, which additionally requires bridging of the horizontal distance for the exit device.
  • the emergency exit may be located on the front of the driver's cabin, which is additionally loaded by aerodynamic loads, there is also a requirement to provide a air and water tightness of the system.
  • exit device which bends downwards, may collide with the coupler protruding from the front of the vehicle.
  • Some state of the art exit device solutions occupy the complete height of the carriage.
  • EP 1 623 902 A1 discloses a rail vehicle comprising an emergency exit on the front and a expandable emergency ladder.

  • the coupling unit 50 can be horizontally and vertically bridged such that the stairway 110 is in any position horizontally and/or vertically spaced apart from the coupling unit 50.
  • the stairway rotates from its initial upside-down orientation to its regular orientation.
  • a passenger can now disembark the vehicle 1 without interference with the coupling unit 50 in order to walk from the interior walkway 60 of the vehicle 1 downstairs to the exterior ground level 70, which may be a track level in case the vehicle 1 is a train.
  • the second guide unit 25 may be provided at an inner surface of the door 21 and/or the door frame 23, as already described in respect of the first guide unit 24.
  • Figs. 7 and 8 also show the horizontal movement of the hand rail 120. While in Figs. 4-6 , the stairway moved horizontally from its first to its second position, now, after finishing the horizontal movement of the stairway 110 and during rotation of the stairway 110 about the second hinge 130, the hand rail 120 starts to move horizontally along the first guide unit 24 from its initial position (left of Fig. 6 ) to an intermediate position as shown in Fig. 7 to its final position of Fig. 8 . A first end 122 of the hand rail 120 remains attached to the first guide unit 24, the second end 124 remains attached to the stairway 110. In Fig.
  • the first end 122 of the hand rail 120 has reached the end of the first guide unit 24 and the hand rail 120 is finally unfolded to its final state or formation.
  • the hand rail 120 supports a passenger during his exit from the vehicle 1.
  • the hand rail 120 becomes fixed when it reaches the end of the second guide unit 24. This can be done by employing locking elements in the joints 126 of the hand rail 120 or by fixing the first end 122 of the hand rail 120 to a lock provided in the first guide unit 24.
  • Such fixture of the hand rail 120 provided safety during use of the hand rail 120.
  • a second guide unit 25 is provided to guide the horizontal movement of the stairway and to limit the horizontal movement of the stairway 110.
  • the stairway may lock such that it not able to move the stairway 110 back and forth without releasing the lock. In this position, if further horizontal force is applied to the stairway 110, the stairway is only able to rotate from its inverted upside-down orientation to its final regular orientation.
  • a second guide unit 25 may only optionally be provided.
  • the stairway 110 may freely translate horizontally without using a second guide unit 25.
  • the construction of the stairway 110 may allow and limit the horizontal movement of the stairway 110 in a similar manner as the second guide unit 25.
  • the stairway 110 is not only horizontally moveable and rotatable around a second hinge 130, but also foldable, preferably accordion like. This allows saving storing space of the stair assembly 100 in an unused state.
  • the foldable embodiment of the stairway 110 is only an option and the stairway 110 may not be foldable but rigid.
  • a joining or support element 40 may be provided coupled on a first end to an interior of the body 2 and on an opposing second end to the stairway 110.
  • the joining or support element 40 may be provided to stabilize the movement of the stairway 110 between the first position and the second position. For instance, while the stairway 110 may be fixed on one side to a second guide unit 25, it may be fixed on the opposing side to the joining element 40 to increase stability of the stairway 110.
  • the joining element 40 may be an air cylinder with a piston which appears and disappears from a tubular cylinder main body.
  • the joining element 40 may be coupled to a third guide unit 42 provided inside the body 2 of the vehicle 1.
  • the joining or support element 40 may be a pneumatic spring or a gas pressure spring. This would advantageously allow to support and dampen the rotation of the stairway 110 from its inverted upside-down to its regular orientation. Without such a joining or support element 40, the steps would simply fall down in direction of gravitation during rotation, which may damage the stairway 110.
  • the joining element 40 may be an actuator.
  • the actuator may facilitate the horizontal movement of the stairway 110 as well as its rotation. This can be done automatically or mechanically.
  • the actuator may comprise its own battery to provide energy used for fulfilling the movements.
  • the stairway 110 can be moved backwards into the vehicle 1 for a further use of the emergency exit system.
