Abstract

The driver's cab of the vehicle is provided with an end wall door opening closed by a door which opens by movement to outside the end wall. An extendable stair assembly 50, 52 is stored in the driver's cab on a floor at a door threshold behind the door and operable from a retracted state to an extended state, to allow train to track detrainment. The extendable stair assembly 50, 52 is also provided with wheels for rolling the extendable stair assembly in the retracted state on the floor from the storage position to a remote position away from the door threshold to give access to the door opening. The movement of the extendable stair assembly 50, 52 is guided about a horizontal pivot axis through the door opening from the storage position to an extended operational position, wherein two mutually pivoted sections open out about a further horizontal pivot axis. This movement is initiated by initiating means, subsequent movement towards the operational position being achieved by gravity and controlled by a spring and damper unit 72.

Description

PASSENGER RAIL VEHICLE PROVIDED WITH A DETRAINMENT SYSTEM
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[001] The invention relates to the detrainment of passengers from a rail vehicle. More specifically, it relates to a passenger rail vehicle provided with means to allow detrainment from at (east one of the ends of the vehicle.
BACKGROUND ART
[0021 In order to enable passenger detrainment on routes that includes specific sections with side access restrictions such as in tunnels, concepts allowing front end evacuation have been developed. Front end passenger detrainment can be carried out in two ways. The first of these involves another train which is driven up to the defective train so that the doors at the adjacent ends of each train can be opened to allow the passengers to pass from the defective train into the other train. The second method of detraining passengers is used in situations where no other train is available or where it is imperative to detrain passengers from the defective train very quickly. This method involves the driver retrieving a set of steps from the first carriage of the train, opening the door at one end of the train, preferably the front end, and placing the steps so that they descend from the front of the train to the level of the track, and then detraining the :. 20 passengers to the track using the steps. The set of steps prove to be unsatisfactory because they are both unstable and difficult to descend. I...
* [003] GB 2 409 195 discloses such an escape device for a rail vehicle S comprising an emergency door integrated into a front of the rail vehicle and a movable ramp for bridging a coupler of the rail vehicle. The ramp is associated with the emergency exit door and movable from a storage position into an * operational position. The ramp is located in its operational position completely above the coupler of the rail vehicle. Moreover, the ramp is provided with a foldable or telescopic ladder. The escape device allows both a train-to-train and a train-to-track evacuation of passengers. However, the passenger must clamber down the steep ladder, which is not necessarily very practical if no assistance personal is available.
[004] GB 2 274 092 discloses a door for rapidly detraining passengers from a rail vehicle comprising a swingable frame and a stair assembly. In a first mode of operation, the stair assembly is secured to the swingable frame and fills an opening defined by the frame. The frame and stair assembly are able to swing about the vertical axis to open and close the vehicle doorway. In the second mode of operation, the stair assembly can be moved about the horizontal axis from the position in which it is secured to the frame to a position in which it provides a pathway for passengers to the ground through the opening in the frame. This movement involves a pivoting movement of a first set of steps about a horizontal axis fixed relative to the door frame, followed by a pivoting movement of a second set of steps about a second pivot axis located at the free end of the first set of steps. Remarkably, both pivoting movements have the same direction of rotation, and a power system is needed to unfold the second set of steps. Moreover, the hinge system for opening and closing the door must be capable of supporting both the door and the stair. The door assembly is particularly bulky, which is not compatible with a sliding plug door. All in all, the system is particularly complex and its reliability in case of emergency might be questioned because of the necessary mechanical drive arrangement to unfold the second set of steps.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[005] The foregoing shortcomings of the prior art are addressed by the present invention. More specifically, the invention aims at providing a passenger rail vehicle, which allows the detrainment of passengers from the train in both the first and second methods of detrainment in a simple and reliable way.
[006] According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a 25 passenger rail vehicle comprising * S 555 * S -a vehicle body comprising an end wall provided with a door opening and a floor S.....
* : including a door threshold in front of the door opening; *SS*** * . -a door movable from a closed position in which the door closes the door opening to an open position in which the door is at least partially located outside the vehicle body to allow detrainment through the door opening, -an extendabte stair assembly, the extendable stair assembly being operable from a retracted state to an extended state, -locking means for securing the extendable stair assembly to the vehicle body in the retracted state in a storage position inside the vehicle body in front of the door on the door threshold, -wheel means attached to the extendable stair assembly for rolling the extendable stair assembly in the retracted state on the floor from the storage position to a remote position away from the door threshold to give access to the door opening; and -pivot means for guiding a movement of the extendable stair assembly about a pivot axis through the door opening from the storage position to an operational position in which the extendable stair assembly is in the extended state.
[007] The extendable stair assembly in the storage position is located in front of the door, ready for deployment in the operational position, so that detrainment to track level can be carried out very rapidly in case of emergency. Whenever the door is to be used without the stair assembly, e.g. in case of detrainment to another train, the retracted stair assembly can be released and moved to the remote position. The fact that this operation may take some time is not detrimental since this mode of operation does not correspond to an emergency situation. The resulting stair assembly is simple and reliable. The wheels supporting weight of * 20 the stair assembly when it moved from the storage position to the remote position make it possible to use a rigid structure for the extendable stair assembly. ***. * . *. .*
* [008) Advantageously, the system may be provided with an actuating means for initiating the movement of the extendable stair assembly from the storage position to the operational position, subsequent movement towards the operational *25 position being achieved by gravity. In a preferred embodiment, the actuating * : means comprises an actuating lever. * *
[009] In order to control limit the speed of deployment of the extendable stair assembly and/or to assist its movement back from the extended state to the retracted state, the vehicle may further comprise a return spring for biasing the extendable stair towards the retracted state, wherein the return spring comprises a first end operatively connected to the vehicle body and a second end operatively connected to the extendable stair assembly. According to one embodiment, a cable and pulley linkage is provided for operatively connecting the second end of the return spring to the extendable stair assembly.
[0010] In order to avoid undesired bounce of the extendable stair assembly when it reaches the extended state, the vehicle may be provided with a damping means for* damping the movement of the extendable stair assembly from the storage position to the operational position, wherein the damping means comprises a first end operatively connected to the vehicle body and a second end operatively connected to the extendable stair assembly. If both a return spring and a damping means are provided, a common cable and pulley linkage may operatively connect in parallel the second end of the return spring and the second end of the damping means to the extendable stair assembly.
[0011] The cable and pulley linkage may comprise a releasable connection, which will allow its disconnection from the extendable stair assembly before the latter is moved to the remote position.
[0012] -Preferably, the wheeL means comprise wheels attached to the extendable stair assembly.
[0013] According to a preferred embodiment, the extendable stair assembly comprises at least a first set of steps and a second set of steps operatively linked * 20 to the first set of steps for moving from the retracted position to an extended : position. The pivot means may include at least one spindle fixed to the first set of * *** steps received in at least one bracket fixed to the door threshold to define a first horizontal pivot axis of the first set of steps and of the extendable stair assembly.
An air spring may be provided between the first set of steps and the second set of steps.
[0014] According to a preferred embodiment, the second set of steps is pivotally linked to the first set of steps. Advantageously, the movement from the storage position to the operational position involves a first rotation movement of the first set of steps about a first horizontal pivot axis which is stationary in relation to the vehicle body and a second rotation movement of the second set of steps about a second pivot axis which is stationary in relation to the first set of steps.
Advantageously, the first and second rotation movements have opposite directions of rotation. This feature makes it easier to move from the storage position to the operational position by gravity, after initiation of the movement by the operator.
[0015) According to an alternative embodiment, the second set of steps is telescopically linked to the first set of steps.
[0016] The passenger rail vehicle can be advantageously provided with a door actuating mechanism for actuating the door towards the open position.
According to a preferred embodiment, the door actuating mechanism includes a door spring for biasing the door towards the open position. Thus, after the operator has released the door, the subsequent movement of the door towards the open position is achieved by mere spring force. According to one embodiment, the door and the door actuating mechanism constitute a slidable plug door assembly.
[00171 While the detrainment is theoretically possible from both ends of the rail vehicle, it is advisable, in most circumstances, to provide for a detrainment from the front end, where there is no traffic to pose a threat on passengers.
Therefore, the end wall provided with the door opening is preferably a front end wall of the train, which also includes a windshield. The door gives access to the driver's cab of the rail vehicle. The driver's cab may comprise a swingable driver's desk pivotable about a vertical axis of the vehicle body between an active position and a passive position, the swingable desk in the active position at least partially obstructing the access to the extendable stair assembly in the storage position.
The swingabte desk may be provided with an operating device including a releasable locking device for locking the swingable desk in the active position and a spring means for biasing the swingable desk towards the passive position. The swingable desk is preferably only a portion of the desk assembly which may also * 25 comprise e.g. a front desk located below the windshield of the driver's cab.
[0018) Advantageously, lighting is integrated in the extendable stair assembly.
p..... * .
[0019] Advantageously, the length of the extendable stair assembly in the extended state is larger than the height of the door opening. Thanks to its length, the stair in the operational position has an angle relative to ground that allows * easy descent.
[0020] According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a passenger rail vehicle comprising: -a vehicle body comprising an end wall provided with a door opening and a floor including a door threshold in front of the door opening, -a door movable from a closed position in which the door closes the door opening to an open position in which the door is at least partially located outside the vehicle body to allow detrainment through the door opening, -an extendable stair assembly comprising a first set of steps pivotally connected to the vehicle body and a second set of steps pivotally connected to the first set of steps, the first set of steps being rotatable in a first direction of rotation about a first horizontal axis fixed relative to the vehicle body and the second set of steps being rotatable in a second direction of rotation opposite to the first direction of rotation about a second horizontal axis fixed relative to the first set of steps and parallel to the first rotation axis to operate the extendable stair assembly from a retracted state to an extended state, and --actuating meansfor initiating the movement of the extendable stair assembly from the storage position to an operational position in the extended state through the door opening, subsequent movement towards the operational position being achieved by gravity.
[0021] Thanks to the specific articulation of the two sets of steps, the extendable stair assembly can be easily deployed.
:. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS * *a* * *.. *
[0022] Other advantages and features of the invention will become more . : clearly apparent from the following description of specific embodiments of the * ** * invention given as non-restrictive examples only and represented in the * 25 accompanying drawings in which: * * * S -figure 1 is diagrammatic illustration of driver's cab of a rail vehicle in * accordance with the invention, including an extendable stair assembly; -figures 2 to 8 are illustrations of the extendable stair assembly of figure 1, in different positions, and -figures 9 to 11 illustrate a variation of the extendable stair assembly which can be used in the driver's cab of figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERED EMBODIMENTS
[00231 Referring to figure 1, the front end 10 of the body of a rail vehicle is provided with a front end wall 12, side walls 14 and a floor 16 housing a driver's cab 18. The front end is provided with a windshield 20 located in front of a driver's area and with a sliding plug door 22. The sliding plug door is provided with a locking mechanism 24 operated by a lever 26 and with an operating spring 28, which is loaded in the closed position of the door, and stores enough elastic potential energy to move the door to a fully open position. The driver's area includes a front desk 30 adjacent to the windshield, and a side desk 32. The side desk 32, which may include control buttons, a radio and/or monitor panel, is hinged so as to move from an operative position 32A, partially in front of the door, to a detrainment location 326. A locking mechanism 34 actuated by a lever 36 locks the side desk. inits operative position.A biasing spring 38, which is loaded in the operative position of the side desk, stores enough elastic potential energy to move the side desk to the detrainment position. A seat 40 is provided for the driver. A partition 42 separates the driver's cab from a passengers saloon. A sliding door 44 gives access to the driver's cab from the saloon. An extendable stair assembly 46 is stored directly behind the sliding plug door 22, between the door 22 and the side desk 32 on a threshold platform 48 fixed to the floor 16 in the doorway.
[0024] The extendable stair assembly 46 and the platform 48 are shown in S...
detail in figures 2 to 8. The extendable stair assembly 46 includes a first set of steps 50 and a second set of steps 52, each provided with a reinforcing structure made of two planar side walls 54 on which the individual steps 56 and siders 58 * are riveted. The siders are provided with apertures 60 for receiving lighting (not : shown). The first set of steps is provided with a pair of pins 62 which are received a.. 30 in two side brackets 64 of the platform to form a horizontal hinge connection about a horizontal axis 65 between the extendable stair assembly and the vehicle body.
The first set of steps 66 is also equipped with two pairs of wheels 68. The second set of steps 52 is articulated about a horizontal axis 70 parallel to the horizontal axis 65 and located at the end of the first set of steps. A lever 71 is pivotally connected to the first set of steps and abuts against an abutment plate 73 fixed to the second set of steps.
[00251 A spring and damper unit 72 is linked to the extendable stair assembly via a cable and pulley linkage 74. The spring and damper unit 72 comprises at least one and preferably two springs 76 and one damper 78, each comprising a first end operatively attached to the vehicle body and a second end attached to the bracket of a double block 80, which constitute one end of the cable and pulley linkage 74. An intermediate cable 82 is received in each groove of the double block 80, and each of the two intermediate cables 82 is attached at one end to a fixing block 84 fixed to the vehicle body and at the other end to a secondary cable 86 by a releasable shackle and eyelet connection 88. A set of guide pulleys 89 pivotally connected to the vehicle body are provided to guide the cables 82. A further air spring 90 is provided between the two sets of steps.
[00261 The extendable stair assembly 46 is locked in the storage position by a locking means 92 actuated by an actuating lever 94.
[00271 The operation of the assembly in both its first and second modes will now be described with reference to the figures and the foregoing description.
[00281 Whenever the rail vehicle is in motion, the extendable stair assembly 46 is locked in the stored position as shown in figures 1, 2 and 7 behind the closed sliding plug door 22. The access to the extendable stair assembly is partly obstructed by the hinged side desk 32. * *
[0029] In a first mode of operation, when the train has stopped and detrainment from the defective train to another adjacent train is organised, the . : 25 driver first actuates the lever 36 to release the side desk 32 which is moved by the spring 38 to the detrainment position 32B. The driver can then release the shackle * and eyelet connections 88, release the locking means 92 of the extendable stair *...: assembly and pull the stair assembly to extract the pins 62 from the brackets 64. * *
* The extendable stair assembly is then free to roll on the wheels 68 and can be p....
* 30 moved to a remote position 46B out of the doorway on the side of the driver's cab opposite to the driver's desk. Finally, the driver actuates the lever 26 to open the door and deploys the detrainment bridge plate normally stowed on the side of the driver's cab opposite to the driver's desk.
[0030] In a second mode of operation, when the rail vehicle has stopped and access to the track is required, e.g. when passengers must escape the rail vehicle in an emergency situation, the driver first actuates the lever 36 to release the side desk which is moved by the spring 38 to the detrainment position 32B. The driver can then actuate the lever 26 to release the door lock. The door 22 is automatically moved to the open position by the door spring 28. Finally, the driver operates the lever 71 to initiate a pivotal movement of the second set of steps 52 outwardly from the vehicle. This movement can be assisted by an optional air spring. When its centre of gravity passes over the pivot axis 65 the extendable stair assembly begins to rotate outwardly about the pivot axis 65 under its own weight, is retarded by the damping and spring forces created by the spring and damper unit 72 and air spring 90. The cables 82 unwind since the weight of the stair assembly is sufficient to overcome the retracting force they exert on the cables.
[0031] The extendable stair assembly can be moved back to the retracted state with the assistance of the spring 76.
[0032] While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described, it is to be understood by those skilled in the art that the invention is naturally not limited to this embodiment. Many variations are possible.
[0033] Figures 9 to 11 illustrate a variant of the extendable stair assembly which can be used in the driver's cab of figure 1. The features identical or similar to those of figures 2 to 8 have been designated with identical reference numbers * and their description will not be repeated here. As can be seen on figure 9, the air spring 90 is linked to a rocker plate 200 which rotates about the axis 70 and is provided with a nose 202 which abuts against a pin 204. In the retracted state of figure 9, the air spring 90 biases the second set of stairs 52 towards the retracted position. Once the extension movement towards the extended state has started, the action point of the air spring 90 on the rocker plate 200 moves about the axis : 30 of rotation 70 to free the rocker and allow the deployment of the second set of
S
stairs.
[0034] Other variations are possible. A lighting of the steps can be integrated to the extendable stair assembly. This lighting may include lights connected to a battery pack integrated into the stair assembly and an electrical connection to the vehicle. The electrical connection is automatically disconnected and the lighting circuit closed when the extendable stair assembly is deployed.
10035) The door and the stair assembly may be further provided with actuating means for opening the door and initiating the deployment of the extendable stair assembly from the outside.
[00361 The initial movement of the extendable stair assembly towards the operational position may be assisted or fully powered by an air spring. This may prove particularly useful as part of the means for deploying the steps from outside the vehicle.
[0037] While the driver's cab at one end of the vehicle only has been described, it is clear that both ends of the vehicle can be provided with a driver's cab and a similar detrainment system. *. * * * S.. S... S * * I. * p * * * .*

The ramp is located in its operational position completely above the coupler of the rail vehicle. Moreover, the ramp is provided with a foldable or telescopic ladder. The escape device allows both a train-to-train and a train-to-track evacuation of passengers. [004] GB 2 274 092 discloses a door for rapidly detraining passengers from a rail vehicle comprising a swingable frame and a stair assembly. In a first mode of operation, the stair assembly is secured to the swingable frame and fills an opening defined by the frame.
