The present patent application claims priority over the French patent application FR16 / 53145 which will be considered as an integral part of this description.

DomaineField

The present application relates to a soleplate of a steam iron.

Exposé de l'art antérieurPresentation of the prior art

Since antiquity it is known that a fabric can be ironed by combining heat with a mechanical pulling action on its fibers. Over time, the ironing tools have evolved from passing smooth heated stones or pebbles, which were moved on the linen, to dry irons.

The observation had shown that the fibers were much easier to flatten or shape if they were moistened, and also that the conservation of these states was linked to the temperature and the speed of drying.

This was the reign of the "wet paw" ironing method consisting in interposing a damp cloth between the soleplate of the iron and the fabric, which made it possible to obtain a quality still considered today as being the best possible.

With the appearance of electricity, irons were created, first dry and then steam, which made it possible to remove the use of the "wet paw". Despite undeniable time and practical results, these were lower than those obtained with the latter.

The soles of these irons were made of aluminum foundry and polished to obtain a surface condition and flatness compatible with the desired use. Their defect was a rapid fouling due to the charring of tissue particles embedded in the microporosities created by polishing.

To solve this problem, soles were created composed of a heating part in foundry aluminum to which a laminated aluminum cap, object of the patent FR2593837 describing a method of attachment between the two parties. The new material used withstands, without alteration, higher temperatures than foundry aluminum, allows the application of various coatings or surface treatments as described in the patent US4822686 describing the application of an enamel coating to improve the ease of maintenance and the sliding of the irons.

The distribution of the vapor under the surface of the sole was improved by an increase in the number of outlet holes and / or by the provision of hollowed out shapes under the sole. It is known, in a non-exhaustive manner, forms of drops of water, tears or channels of multiple forms.

In use, it was noticed that the vapor cushion formed at the iron / fabric interface did not completely escape, especially under the central part, where, locally, a significant residual moisture in the ironed linen requiring a wait before storage.

Several solutions were proposed. The patent DE452559 for example, relating to a sole comprising at the front a spraying zone and at the rear a drying zone by distributing superheated air. However, the speed of passage over the areas to be dried being incompatible with drying effective, especially since the temperature of this air is insufficient, this solution has proved ineffective.

The document US5532455 discloses a soleplate of steam iron comprising, on its front part, lateral orifices and central orifices for steam outlet supplied by two separate chambers, which constitutes a first vaporization range, followed by a first drying range without steam outlet, running transversely from one edge to the other of the sole. This arrangement is repeated a second time, extending to the rear of the sole. According to the holder, this alternation of spraying and drying ranges makes it possible to perform a double action supposed to ensure better smoothing. In reality, the ratio between the spraying and drying surfaces is not sufficient to ensure total drying. In fact, an area remaining impregnated with the first humidification is rewetted and the vapor concentrated under the center of the soleplate is not completely evacuated. The permanence of the folds is therefore not guaranteed.

The detailed analysis of the phenomenon showed that the vapor was trapped under the central part of the sole, the explanation being that if the quantity of vapor emitted by the holes could, for half, be evacuated in the open air along the edges, the other half had no way out, remained concentrated in the center by the shape given to the belt of holes on the periphery, or to the shapes of the distribution channels.

The only exposed part being the back of the sole, it was necessary, to favor the flow of steam towards this zone during the ironing action, to create arrangements of the surface of the soles, hence the appearance of grooves of all shapes and configurations, favoring this evacuation towards the rear and / or the sides.

An improvement solution appeared with the creation of soles in two parts with a heating part dressed in a cap. The patent US6189245 describes a cap with separate spray and drying zones with approximately 30% affected vaporization; the rest, assigned to drying, comprising a coating constituted by a multitude of small studs between which the steam can be evacuated in all directions. This provision, despite significant performance results, only partially achieves the desired result.

An object of an embodiment is to overcome all or part of the drawbacks of the steam irons described above.

Another object of an embodiment is to improve the drying of the laundry during the steam ironing operation, by promoting rapid and complete evacuation thereof to avoid the formation of residual moisture in the fabrics after ironing.

Description détailléedetailed description

The same elements have been designated by the same references in the different figures. For the sake of clarity, only the elements which are useful for understanding the embodiments described have been shown and are detailed. In particular, the internal components of a steam iron are well known to those skilled in the art and will not be described in detail.

In the following description, when reference is made to qualifiers for absolute position, such as "front", "back", "up", "down", "left", "right", etc., or relative, such as "above", "below", "upper", "lower", etc., or to orientation qualifiers, such as "horizontal", "vertical", etc., there reference is made to the orientation of the figures or to an iron in a normal position of use. Unless otherwise specified on the contrary, the expressions "approximately", "substantially", and "of the order of" mean to the nearest 10%, preferably to the nearest 5%.

According to one embodiment, the soleplate of the steam iron comprises at least one step intended to create a surface parallel to a base surface serving as a support base for the iron on the laundry.

According to one embodiment, the surface created by the step is in relief relative to the base surface. The raised surface is preferably located in the central part of the drying area of the iron. The raised surface is free from spray holes and is in permanent contact with the laundry at the same time as the base surface. The raised surface is connected to the base surface by an intermediate surface surrounding the raised surface and joining the base surface. The intermediate surface can be flat or curved to allow, during the movements of the iron on the laundry and regardless of the directions of these movements, to expel the residual vapor present in the laundry to the outside.

According to one embodiment, the surface created by the step is in depression relative to the base surface. This makes it possible to create leading edges on the edges of the depressed surface improving the quality and speed of ironing.

The Figures 1 and 2 represent a bottom view and a partial side view of a sole 5 of an iron. The sole 5 comprises two components: the first component is the cap and the second component is the heating sub-assembly, the cap covering the heating sub-assembly. In the following description, two embodiments will be described. In one embodiment, the sole 5 comprises a thick cap which is designated by the reference 10. The cap 10 can be an aluminum cap having a thickness for example between 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm. According to another embodiment, the sole includes a thin cap which is designated by the reference 11. The cap 11 can be a cap made of stainless steel sheet or other material having a thickness for example between 0.2 mm and 0.6 mm. The heating sub-assembly, not visible on the Figures 1 and 2 , is specific to each type of cap and is designated by the reference 12 for the embodiment corresponding to the cap 10 and by the reference 13 for the embodiment corresponding to the cap 11. The Figures 1 and 2 are identical for caps 10 and 11.

The modifications made to the caps 10 or 11 compared to conventional caps are distributed as follows:
  • on the one hand, modifications which relate to the surface of the caps 10 or 11 in contact with the linen which may be identical in all respects whatever the material of the cap; and
  • on the other hand, modifications which are related to the fixing of the caps on their respective heating sub-assembly, specific to each type of cap, depending on their material.

On the Figures 1 and 2 , which represent the outer part of the cap 10 or 11 in contact with the laundry and which are common to the two types of caps 10 and 11, there is a recess corresponding to a convex shape constituting a relief 15, also called convex portion or portion in relief, defined with respect to a reference surface 16, substantially planar, corresponding to the largest planar part of the cover 10 or 11 in permanent contact with the linen. According to one embodiment, it is in approximately the front half, preferably the front third, of the surface 16 intended for vaporization, that vaporization holes 20 open.

The volume of the relief 15 is defined by a substantially flat surface 17 in the axis of the cap. The surface 17 is raised relative to the surface 16 and is located in a plane parallel to the latter. A height h of between 0.3 mm and 2 mm separates the two surfaces 16 and 17. The surface 17 occupies a portion of the total surface of the cap 10 or 11 in contact with the linen which is between 10% and 40%.

  • de chaque côté, des portions de courbes c1 et c2 sensiblement parallèles à leur bord de coiffe respectif 19 pour c1 et 21 pour c2 et à une distance d1 pouvant être comprise entre 25 mm et 45 mm, par exemple égale à environ 35 mm ;
A line L1, shown in phantom in figure 1 , represents the limits of surface 17. Line L1 is defined by:
  • on each side, portions of curves c1 and c2 substantially parallel to their respective cap edge 19 for c1 and 21 for c2 and at a distance d1 which may be between 25 mm and 45 mm, for example equal to about 35 mm;
  • at the rear, a straight portion p1 parallel to the heel cap 22 at a distance d2 which may be between 25 mm and 40 mm, for example equal to about 30 mm; and
  • at the front, a circular portion r1 tangent to the curves c1 and c2 having a radius which may be between 5 mm and 15 mm, for example equal to about 8 mm.

The volume of the relief 15 is further defined by a surface 18 of connection between the surface 16 and the surface 17.

A line L2, in solid line, represents the limits of the surface 18. The line L2 is defined by a constant distance d3 between the lines L1 and L2, which can be between 10 mm and 25 mm, for example equal to about 17 mm . This is reflected on line L2 by a portion of curve c3 parallel to the portion of curve c1, a portion of curve c4 parallel to the portion of curve c2, a circular portion r2 parallel to the circular portion r1, a portion of straight line p2 parallel to the right-hand portion p1, and by two new circular portions: a circular portion r3 of center o1 located at the point of intersection of the portion of curve c1 with the straight portion p1, and a circular portion r4 of center o2 located at point of intersection of the portion of curve c2 with the portion of line p2.

The surface 18 of junction between the two lines L1 and L2 can be generated by the displacement of a straight line segment between the two lines, but it is preferably defined by the circulation of a radius R of center located on a perpendicular to surface 17 plumb with line L1, defined as the locus of the tangent points between the radius R and the surface 17. The line L2 is defined as the locus of the secant points between the radius R and the surface 16.

En figure 3, on a représenté en traits pointillés des éléments cachés propres à la coiffe 10 et visibles sur les figures 4 et 5.The figure 3 is a view analogous to the figure 1 of cap 10 or 11 and the Figures 4 and 5 are sectional views of the figure 3 respectively along lines AA and BB in the case of a thick cap 10. In figure 3 , there are shown in dotted lines hidden elements specific to the cap 10 and visible on the Figures 4 and 5 .

In these figures, apart from the modifications common with the cap 11, the following specific modifications to the cap 10 are distinguished:
tubular shapes which are intended, inter alia, to serve as hollow rivets 23 to ensure the connection between the rear part of the cover 10, used for drying, and the heating sub-assembly 12. Their number, their distribution, and their mode are determined according to the chosen use. The tubular forms 23 are positioned outside the surface occupied by the vaporization chamber.

The Figures 6 and 7 are sectional views of the figure 3 respectively along lines CC and DD in the case where the sole includes the cap 10 and the Figures 8 and 9 are sectional views of the figure 3 respectively along lines CC and DD in the case where the sole includes the cap 11.

  • pour leur partie commune assurant le contact avec la partie intérieure des coiffes 10 et 11 : la surface de leur fonderie, initialement plate, est modifiée (figure 6), pour reproduire le relief 15 qui est positionné avec pour référence les trous de vaporisation présents sur chaque fonderie et chaque coiffe ;
  • pour la partie arrière, réservée au séchage, spécifique à la coiffe 10 en aluminium, des orifices 24 sont prévus, en face de chaque rivet creux 23 (figure 7), en plus de ceux destinés aux rivets issus de la fabrication des trous de vaporisation 20, et un chanfrein 25 est créé à l'entrée de chaque orifice 24 ;
As shown in these figures, the heating sub-assemblies 12 and 13, in aluminum foundry overmolding a tubular heating element and comprising the vaporization chamber, are modified with respect to conventional heating sub-assemblies as follows:
  • for their common part ensuring contact with the inner part of the caps 10 and 11: the surface of their foundry, initially flat, is modified ( figure 6 ), to reproduce the relief 15 which is positioned with reference to the spray holes present on each foundry and each cap;
  • for the rear part, reserved for drying, specific to the aluminum cap 10, holes 24 are provided, opposite each hollow rivet 23 ( figure 7 ), in addition to those intended for the rivets resulting from the manufacture of the vaporization holes 20, and a chamfer 25 is created at the entrance of each orifice 24;
  • for the rear part, intended for drying, specific to the cover 11 made of steel sheet or other material, the type of shape given conventionally is kept at the edges of the sub-assembly 13 around its periphery ( figure 8 ), to ensure crimping.

The figure 10 illustrates an embodiment of a method making it possible to obtain the structure represented in figure 7 . In this embodiment, the hollow rivets 23 are obtained by extrusion spinning, the ductility of the aluminum of the cap making it possible to apply this process by which a movable punch under high pressure 30 comes to block the material while a cylindrical punch 31, by sinking, causes it to creep until it forms a rivet chimney of the desired height. For example, to form the hollow rivets 23 of internal diameter Ø equal to 3 mm from a material thickness of 2 mm, and the penetration of the punch 31 being 1.5 mm, one can obtain a chimney with a height H of approximately 4.5 mm.

  • pour la partie avant, on utilise les tubes extrudés des trous de sortie vapeur 20, le sertissage étant assuré par exemple selon les techniques connues décrites dans le brevet FR2593837 ;
According to one embodiment, the assembly between the cover 10 and the sub-assembly 12 can be carried out as follows:
  • for the front part, the tubes extruded from the steam outlet holes 20 are used, crimping being ensured for example according to the known techniques described in the patent FR2593837 ;
  • for the rear part, hollow rivets 23 are used, proceeding by limited crushing of their ends (visible on the figure 7 ), the deformation generated, by pushing the material into the chamfer 25 provided for this purpose ensures the clamping between the two parts.

According to one embodiment, the assembly between the cap 11 and the sub-assembly 13 can be carried out while preserving the conventional methods, by the use of the holes of vaporization 20 and crimping of the cap 11 around the periphery of the sub-assembly 13.

Before positioning the parts against each other, we take the precaution of coating all the surfaces called to be in contact with a thermally conductive grease which will prevent the formation of an insulating air gap between them.

The figure 11 is a sectional view of the figure 3 according to line FF of another embodiment in which temperature sensors Ct are installed on the cover 10 inside certain hollow rivets 23 chosen as representative of the temperature of the cover.

As it appears in figure 9 , reserves 27 can be provided in the heating sub-assembly 13 to allow access to the cap 11, each of these reserves 27 is crowned with a hollow cone 28, from foundry, of thickness for example between 1 mm and 2 mm, protruding by a height h1 of for example between 2 mm and 6 mm on the inside of the sub-assembly 13.

The figure 12 is a sectional view of the figure 3 according to line FF of another embodiment in which temperature sensors Ct are installed in the reserves 27, arranged at points representative of the sole temperature to allow access to the cover 11.

The retention in place of these sensors will be ensured by the deformation, either of the head of the rivets 23 as shown in figure 10 for the cap 10, either from the top of the hollow cone 28 as shown in figure 11 for the cap 11 and by the establishment of an elastic wedging 29 ensuring the immobilization of the sensor.

The collected information transmitted to a computer and translated can make it possible to display, for example on a liquid crystal screen visible to a user, the nature of the fabric that can be ironed.

The figure 13 is a sectional view of the figure 3 according to line GG illustrating the operation of the iron. During ironing, at the surface 17 of the relief 15, the pressing pressure is concentrated because the contact surface with the linen 32 is reduced. The residual humidity, trapped in the linen 32 under this surface, subjected to heat and to an increased pressure, has the possibility of being discharged laterally, first in the space of height h formed between the surfaces 16 and 17 , then outwards, as illustrated by the arrow V in figure 13 , under the effect of the displacement of the surface 18 which creates an open wedge shape towards the lateral edges of the sole. Besides an overall drying of the best quality linen, the possibility of obtaining marked and persistent folds is real.

The outer surface of each cap remains compatible with the application of known coatings, but the thermal conductivity can be improved by a flash projection of boron nitride, for example, on the surface of the enamel slip before baking.

It is, moreover, desirable to obtain the disappearance of the folds of the fabric during its ironing.

To this end, a great deal of research was carried out which led to solutions, all of which were aimed at improving iron / linen surface relationships: better resistance to wear, better sliding, better evacuation of residual moisture or even better thermal transmission. .

Since ironing performance can be defined as the best compromise between factors: speed / quality / less arduous work / less wear and tear on the laundry, it was remarkable to observe that most of these actions had the sole aim of optimizing the relationships created.

It was to neglect the importance of the first action to which the fibers of a fabric are subjected during ironing, which is a mechanical action of tensioning the fabric through the edge of the sole, an observable phenomenon, because , any displacement of the iron generates the appearance of a mobile undulation, parallel to this edge. With the insoles with added caps, this traction on the fibers is reduced due, on the one hand, to the radius of curvature of their edge due to their manufacture, on the other hand to the reduction in their coefficient of friction on the linen. The improvements made in these areas have, in fact, adversely affected the speed of the shaping of the fibers since, at equivalent humidification conditions, obtaining straight fibers by stretching the fabric is more efficient and faster than doing so by pressing on them to straighten them. There is therefore a possibility of improving the ironing speed.

An object of an embodiment is to significantly increase the ironing yield by improving the tension of the fibers from the first movement of the sole on the laundry.

The figure 14 is a bottom view of a sole 105 of an iron. As described above, the sole 105 comprises two components: the first component is the cap and the second component is the heating sub-assembly, the cap covering the heating sub-assembly. In the following description, two embodiments will be described. In one embodiment, the sole 105 comprises a thick cap which is designated by the reference 110. The cap 110 may be an aluminum cap having a thickness for example between 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm. According to another embodiment, the sole includes a thin cap which is designated by the reference 111. The cap 111 can be a cap made of stainless steel sheet or other material having a thickness for example between 0.2 mm and 0 , 6 mm. The heating sub-assembly, not visible on the figure 14 , is specific to each type of cap and is designated by the reference 112 for the embodiment corresponding to the cap 110 and by the reference 113 for the embodiment corresponding to the cap 111. The figure 14 is the same for caps 110 and 111.

The figure 15 is a sectional view of the cap 110 or 111 along the line aa. The figure 16 is an enlarged view of a part of the figure 15 in the case of a thick cap 110 and the figure 17 is an enlarged view of part of the figure 16 in the case of a thick cap 110.

  • une surface 113 de référence, par exemple sensiblement plane, correspondant à la partie de la coiffe en contact permanent avec le linge ;
  • une surface 114 et une surface 115, par exemple sensiblement planes, sensiblement parallèles entre elles et au bord de la coiffe, de largeurs m comprises entre 0,7 mm et 1,5 mm, les surfaces 114 et 115 faisant le tour de la coiffe 110 ou 111 ;
As it appears on the figures 14 to 16 , the cap 110 of aluminum and the cap 111 of sheet steel or other material which is the subject of the invention comprises:
  • a reference surface 113, for example substantially planar, corresponding to the part of the cap in permanent contact with the linen;
  • a surface 114 and a surface 115, for example substantially planar, substantially parallel to each other and to the edge of the cap, of widths m comprised between 0.7 mm and 1.5 mm, the surfaces 114 and 115 going around the cap 110 or 111;
  • a surface 116, for example substantially planar, the limits L of which are substantially parallel to each other and to the edge of the cap. The axis of symmetry of this surface 116, of width for example between 7 mm and 16 mm is located at a distance for example between 12 mm and 24 mm from the edge of the cap. Spray holes 120 open onto this surface 116 and define its length which will be adapted according to their number; and
  • a surface 117, for example substantially planar, substantially parallel to the limits L of the surface 116 of width for example between 0.7 mm and 1.5 mm.

On the figure 14 , two possible arrangements of the surface 116 have been shown. In the right part of the figure 14 , there is shown a surface 116 which extends from the front of the cap to the cap heel while in the left part of the figure 14 , the surface 116 extends from the front of the cap to half of the cap. Preferably, the surface 16 is distributed in the same way along two lateral edges of the cap.

The surfaces 114, 115, 116 and 117 represent the basic modifications of the cap 110 and 111, but it can be added, if necessary, other surfaces of different shapes but of similar characterizations such as for example surfaces 118 and 119.

The surfaces 114 to 119 are in depression relative to the reference surface 113. They are obtained by creating notches (visible in particular in figure 17 ), of height h for example between 0.15 mm and 0.4 mm. Each drop height h generates a leading edge 121 and 122 for those in contact with the reference surface 113, a leading edge 123 for that in contact with the surface 114, a leading edge 124 for the one at l intersection between the edge of the cap and the surface 115, as well as a leading edge 125 for that in contact with the surface 117. Consequently, the surfaces 114 and 117 are on the same plane, as well as the surfaces 115 and 116.

According to one embodiment, to avoid a wear effect of the linen, each leading edge has the same radius r, for example between 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm, which is for example produced by stamping and / or semi-cutting to guarantee its dimensional regularity and a clean and burr-free surface finish.

For the manufacture of caps 110 and 111, the quality and dimensional guarantees of the leading edges are obtained by implementing different methods depending on the material of the caps.

The figure 18 illustrates an embodiment of a method of manufacturing the cap 110. For the development of the surfaces 114, 115, 116 and 117 as well as, if necessary is the surfaces 118 and 119, one proceeds by stamping, by playing on the aluminum ductility to move the material from its initial shape, indicated by the dashed line Fi, to its final shape Fd. The cap is introduced into the tool after the drawing operation, raising of the edges, then positioned on the docking plane Pa of the dies 125 and 126 comprising, in hollow, the shapes of the leading edges 121, 122, 123 , 124 and 125 of radius r. The cap is held pressed against the plane Pa by a blank holder 127. A punch 128 is then made to penetrate, the shape and depth of penetration have been studied to move the quantity of aluminum just necessary so that all the empty spaces are filled.

The figure 19 illustrates an embodiment of a method for manufacturing the cap 111. This is done by semi-shearing. Once the cap is positioned and held in place by a blank holder 129 on the dies 130 and 131, the cutting punch 132 is lowered towards these dies, into which it is made to penetrate from height h.

The figure 20 is a detail view of the figure 19 . The radius r of the leading edges ba is obtained by playing on the clearance j between the cutting punch 132 and the dies 130 and 131. It is this clearance j which makes it possible to adjust the cutting outlet radius, up to get the desired radius r.

According to one embodiment, the heating sub-assembly 112, consisting of an aluminum foundry overmolding a tubular heating element and comprising the vaporization chamber, is modified in the following manner which is valid for both the aluminum caps 110 and for 111 caps in steel or other material.

The manufacturing of the depressions on the surfaces 116 and 117 generates inversely and in relief with respect to the internal face of the cap of the projections 133 and 134, as is visible on the figure 16 . The foundry of the sub-assembly 112 will be modified accordingly to accommodate the projections 133 and 134 as closely as possible.

An embodiment of an assembly method between the caps 110 or 111 and the heating sub-assembly 112 will now be described.

The figure 21 is a sectional view of the sole shown in figure 14 along line dd. For 110 caps and if the option of creating steam holes up to the back of the soleplate has been chosen as shown in figure 14 for the left part of the sole 105, the crimping technique using the steam holes described in the patent is used FR2593837 .

The figure 22 illustrates an embodiment of an assembly process between the cap 110 and the heating sub-assembly 112.

If the option chosen is that of a soleplate with separate spraying and drying zones, in particular as described according to patent US6189245 , we proceed by crimping using steam holes in the vaporization zone, and, for the drying zone in the rear part as shown in figure 14 for the right part of the sole 105, devoid of fastening means, notches of width R are created locally, for example between 2 mm and 4 mm by driving in a blade 135, of corresponding width, to form a chip 136 of thickness greater than half the thickness of the cover plate, this being folded over the edge of the heating assembly 112 will locally tighten between the two parts. There will be as many crimp points, according to this method, as necessary to ensure perfect contact between the internal surface of the cap 110 or 111 and that of the heating sub-assembly 112.

For the caps 111, whatever the option chosen, the current known fixing methods are retained.

Before positioning the parts against each other, we will coat all surfaces called to be in contact with a thermally conductive grease which will prevent the formation of an insulating air gap between them.

The figure 23 is a sectional view of the figure 14 according to line cc illustrating the functioning of the iron. During ironing, at the level of the fabric 137 to be ironed, the repetition of the traction (zone T) exerted by the movement of the iron (arrow D) on the linen by the plurality of leading edges improves the speed of its setting. flat or fold formation.

It is noted that a person skilled in the art can combine various elements of these various embodiments and variants without demonstrating inventive step. By way of example, the surfaces 114 and 115 of the sole 105 described in relation to the Figures 14 to 23 can be implemented with the sole 5 described in relation to the Figures 1 to 13 .
