Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electrical household appliance having a zero standby mode which is capable of achieving a true zero power consumption standby state.
- the present invention relates to an electrical household appliance such as for instance a refrigeration appliance, an image display device, a dishwasher or a laundry treatment appliance, i.e. a washing, drying or combo washing/drying machine.
- an electrical household appliance such as for instance a refrigeration appliance, an image display device, a dishwasher or a laundry treatment appliance, i.e. a washing, drying or combo washing/drying machine.
- Each electrical household appliance performs various functions. For instance a washing machine remains powered during standby mode and dissipates around 0,5W standby power while no operation in relation to the primary functions of the appliance is carried out. Therefore, constant power dissipation continuously adds to the power usage of the machine.
- US2013088898 discloses a switching mode power supply (SMPS) including a power transistor coupled to the primary winding of transformer and a resistor coupled between the input power source and a control terminal of the power transistor for triggering a primary current flow through the power transistor for providing startup power.
- a primary side control circuit is configured to regulate the output of the SMPS.
- a secondary side control circuit is coupled to the secondary winding and being configured to provide a first electrical signal to the secondary winding when an output voltage of the SMPS is less than a first reference voltage, whereupon an awakening signal is induced in the auxiliary winding and causes the primary side control circuit to provide a turn-on signal to the power transistor.
- the primary side control circuit is configured to enter a standby mode or a normal operating mode in response to the awakening signal.
- the present invention provides a circuit solution by which a true zero power consumption during standby mode is achievable.
- the invention ensures that a single control button is usable to reinitiate an interrupted active mode.
- the present invention provides an electrical appliance with true zero standby state allowing an off state with no power drain while maintaining user intervention capabilities as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
- Primary object of the present invention is to provide an activation circuit such that a power supply dissipating no electrical power when inactive is powered to reinitiate an interrupted active mode.
- the present invention proposes an electrical household appliance having a zero standby mode button energizing a power supply such that a zero standby wake-up circuit in electrical communication with the power supply awakens the same while at the same time disabling the power supply restart signal.
- the power supply started by the zero standby wake-up circuit is configured to output a particular voltage to the zero standby wake-up circuit, upon which repetitive restarting of the board power supply is prevented when the user pushes the zero standby mode button again, in which case a microcontroller deactivates the power supply.
- Fig. 1 demonstrates a block diagram of the zero standby operation according to the present invention.
- Fig. 2 demonstrates a simplified circuit block diagram of the zero standby wake-up circuit operation according to the present invention.
- Fig. 3 demonstrates an exemplary circuit diagram of the zero standby wake-up circuit according to the present invention.
- the present invention relates to electrical household appliances, such appliances including but being not limited to refrigeration appliances, dishwashers, image display devices (TV sets), printers or laundry treatment appliances such as for instance rotary machines, i.e. washing, drying or combo washing/drying machines.
- electrical household appliances such appliances including but being not limited to refrigeration appliances, dishwashers, image display devices (TV sets), printers or laundry treatment appliances such as for instance rotary machines, i.e. washing, drying or combo washing/drying machines.
- the present invention relates to an electrical household appliance having a dedicated standby mode initiation means (1) such as a standby button on the front panel of the appliance.
- the standby mode initiation means (1) can be a conventional infrared sensor controlled by a remote control such as in the case of an image display device.
- the present invention proposes a standby mode initiation means (1) in electrical communication with a microcontroller (2), by which true zero power consumption standby state is achievable as will be delineated hereinafter.
- Activation of the standby mode initiation means (1) provides communication with a microcontroller (2) through a microcontroller communication line and also with a zero standby wake-up circuit (3) through a wake-up circuit communication line.
- the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) in the appliance of the invention has an output terminal providing the restart signal through a power supply restart line (4) to a power supply, which can be a switch-mode power supply (SMPS), the latter typically serving to the purpose of powering the circuit board and any associated component and thereby effecting performing of various functions in association with the electrical household appliance.
- SMPS switch-mode power supply
- the circuit board of the appliance is a microprocessor-based electronic control unit receiving an activation signal upon which the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) of the circuit board activates the power supply.
- the microcontroller (2) is configured to cut power supply to the circuit board upon which no standby power is dissipated so that the circuit board can be powered through the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) only when needed. Therefore, zero standby power dissipation is maintained until a certain function in association with the circuit board is needed to be performed.
- the circuit board does not remain powered during standby mode, it does not involve active power dissipation until the power supply is started by the zero standby wake-up circuit (3).
- the power supply can be turned off by the microcontroller (2) through a power supply deactivation line.
- the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) when the power supply is started by the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) and outputs a particular voltage at a power supply output terminal (6), which is connected to an input terminal of the zero standby wake-up circuit (3). Therefore the latter circuit receives from the power supply a power supply restart disable signal through a power supply restart disable line (5). This ensures that, when started, the power supply (3) continues its operation without repetitive restarting as will be delineated in detail hereinafter.
- the power supply restart disable signal When the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) starts the power supply, repetitive restarting is avoided thanks to the power supply restart disable signal because an additional press of the standby button (Standby mode initiation means (1)) is to be interpreted as the termination of the standby mode.
- the power supply can be powered in two ways. Either, the home appliance is plugged into a source of power for the first time and the power supply is energized or the standby button is pressed. To this end, in the first case, the microcontroller (2) tracks out the condition of the standby mode initiation means (1) through a microcontroller button signal line (7) and if it detects that the standby button is not pressed but the appliance is plugged into a socket, it deactivates the power supply in a predetermined time period.
- the standby wake-up circuit (3) receives from the power supply a power supply restart disable signal through the power supply restart disable line (5).
- an additional press of the standby button will provide termination of the active mode and zero standby state will be activated by the microprocessor (2).
- a standby mode initiation means (1) in the form of a standby button is provided. This button can both initiate and terminate the operation and hence power dissipation of the household appliance.
- the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) awakens the power supply when the BP pin of the circuit is pulled to ground, upon which the power supply is configured to generate an output voltage.
- the output voltage at the power supply output terminal (6) serves to the purpose of pulling the gate of MOSFET Q2 (Fig. 3) to ground through transistor Q3, thereby disabling the transistor Q2. Therefore, the output voltage of the power supply provides the power supply restart disable signal at the respective terminal of the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) and repetitive restarting of the power supply is avoided.
- the operation of the power supply is directly controlled and terminated by the microcontroller (2) when needed.
- the household appliance according to the present invention therefore has two different operational modes.
- the power supply is energized by the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) in response to the button press of the standby button. Thereafter, an additional press of the standby button will not restart the power supply but will deactivate the same thanks to the microcontroller (2) monitoring the condition of the
- the standby mode initiation means (1) deactivates the power supply in a certain time period (for instance 10 seconds) if it detects that the home appliance is plugged into power for the first time, i.e. when power was supplied while the standby button was not pressed.
- the present invention proposes an electrical household appliance comprising a circuit board with a power supply, the electrical household appliance having a first mode of operation during which it is connectable to an external source of power and it dissipates electrical power and a second mode of operation during which it is connectable to an external source of power and it dissipates no electrical power.
- a standby mode initiation means (1) is in electrical communication with a microcontroller (2) and a power supply in the manner that a zero standby wake-up circuit (3) effectuates activation of operational mode by starting the power supply in response to a first signal of the standby mode initiation means (1) and the microcontroller (2) effectuates activation of standby mode in response to a second subsequent signal by the standby mode initiation means (1).
- the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) has an output terminal providing the restart signal through a power supply restart line (4) to the power supply.
- the power supply started by the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) outputs a particular voltage at a power supply output terminal (6) connected to an input terminal of the zero standby wake-up circuit (3) functioning as a power supply restart disable signal.
- the microcontroller (2) tracks out the condition of the standby mode initiation means (1) through a microcontroller button signal line (7) and if it detects that the first signal of the standby mode initiation means (1) is not received when the power supply is started, it deactivates the power supply in a predetermined time period.
- the second subsequent signal of the standby mode initiation means (1) effectuates termination of the active mode by the microprocessor (2) upon which zero standby state will be activated
- the power supply is a switch-mode power supply (SMPS).
- SMPS switch-mode power supply
- the standby mode initiation means (1) is a standby button or an infrared sensor controllable by a remote control.
- both initiation and termination of the standby mode is effected by the standby button or the infrared sensor controllable by a remote control.
- the electrical household appliance is a refrigeration appliance, a dishwasher, an image display device or a laundry treatment appliance.
- the laundry treatment appliance is a washing, drying or combo washing/drying machine.
- the primary aspect of the present invention lies in that the circuit board in an electrical household appliance is operable in the manner to be powered in a time-dependent manner involving no power consumption when in standby mode.
- the present invention therefore provides an electrical household appliance with a circuit board energized only when needed and without causing standby power losses during inactive mode.
