Description
- The present invention relates to a method and to a machine for the production of smoking articles.
- It is known to manufacture cigarettes comprising a filtering part, which has a filtering portion containing a mass of cellulose acetate fibres and loose particles of active carbon, and an active part, typically containing tobacco. The filtering part is usually obtained by wrapping the filtering portion with a strip of paper material.
- This type of cigarettes and the methods for obtaining the same have several disadvantages, among which having particular relevance, is the fact that the quality of filters and/or the connection between the filter and other elements is not always satisfactory. Due to this about 10% of the produced cigarettes are discarded. Document
US 4815645 discloses a method and apparatus for manufacturing filter units made in a long strip with alternate portions of fibrous and pourable filter material. The fibrous portions are first attached at spaced intervals to a sheathing strip which is wrapped practically right around them to form a cylinder with regular empty spaces between the fibrous portions and openings into the spaces. Excess filter material is brushed off the filter unit, and a sealing strip is stuck over the openings. - The object of the present invention is to provide a method and a machine for the production of smoking articles, which would allow to overcome, at least partially, the drawbacks of the prior art and which are, at the same time, inexpensive and easy to implement.
- According to the present invention, a method and a machine for the production of smoking articles are provided, as claimed in the independent claims below, and, preferably, in any one of the claims depending, directly or indirectly, on the aforementioned independent claims.
- The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate examples of nonlimiting embodiments, wherein:
- Figures from 1 to 3 illustrate a machine according to the present invention;
-
Figure 4 is a perspective view, with certain details removed for clarity, of a part of the machine ofFigure 1 ; -
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a different embodiment of the part ofFigure 4 ; -
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a different embodiment of the part ofFigure 4 ; -
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a different embodiment of the part ofFigure 4 ; -
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a detail of a different embodiment of the part ofFigure 4 ; -
Figure 9 is a perspective view of a detail of a different embodiment of the part ofFigure 4 ; and -
Figures 10 and 11 are cross-sections of two different embodiments of smoking articles obtained according to the method of the present invention. - In
Figures 1 to 3 , 1 indicates as a whole a machine for the production of smoking articles 2 (Figures 10 and 11 ). - Each smoking article 2 (which, in particular, is a cigarette) comprises at least one filtering
part 3 and at least oneactive part 4, in particular containing tobacco, to release a substance to be inhaled. The filteringpart 3 comprises at least onefiltering portion 5 having (containing; consisting of) afirst material 6 and loose particles 7 (in particular of a second material different from the first material) . More precisely, theparticles 7 are dispersed in thefirst material 6. - Typically, the
first material 6 is a mass of cellulose acetate fibres. In particular, theparticles 7 are active carbon particles. - Typically, the filtering
portion 5 has an oblong shape with two ends 5' opposite one to the other and aside surface 5" which extends between the two ends. - The
machine 1 comprises a covering device 8 (Figure 2 ), which is designed to at least partially cover with a wrap 9 (typically of paper material), the filtering portion 5 (in particular, so as to obtain the filtering part 3), and a cleaning device 10 (Figure 1 ), which is arranged in the area of acleaning station 11 and is designed to force at least part of theparticles 7 to detach themselves from thefirst material 6 and be removed from thefirst material 6 itself. - In this manner, a significant improvement in the quality of the smoking
article 2 is obtained, thus reducing (among other things) the risk that the particles may free themselves from thefirst material 6 thus reaching a position between thefirst material 6 itself and thewrap 9. - In some cases, the covering
device 8 comprises a forming beam (of a known type) and thewrap 9 is obtained by transversely cutting a continuous strip (made of paper). - According to some embodiments, the
machine 1 also comprises a coupling device 12 (Figure 3 ), which is designed to couple (and bind) the filteringpart 3 and other portions (in particular, the active part 4). - In the embodiment illustrated in Figures from 1 to 3, the
coupling device 12 is arranged downstream from the coveringdevice 8. According to some alternatives not illustrated, thecoupling device 12 and the coveringdevice 8 coincide. In other words, according to said alternatives the filteringpart 3 is simultaneously covered by thewrap 9 and bound to theactive part 4. Typically, in these cases, thewrap 9 not only wraps the filteringpart 3 but also connects it to theactive part 4. - In particular, the
machine 1 comprises aconveying system 13 to feed theportion 5 to the coveringdevice 8 through the cleaning station 11 (and therefore through the cleaning device 12). More precisely, the coveringdevice 8 is arranged on the outside (in particular, downstream) of thecleaning station 12. - In this way, it is possible to operate on (more precisely clean) the filtering
portion 5 in a simple manner and in a relatively unrestricted area of themachine 1. The filteringportion 5 arrives at the coveringdevice 8 already "clean" and, therefore, with less risk that theparticles 7 which are released the filtering portion may interfere with the operation of the coveringdevice 8. - In some cases, the
conveying system 13 is designed to feed theportion 5 from a storage bin (hopper) 14 to the coveringdevice 8 through thecleaning station 11. Alternatively, theconveying system 13 is designed to feed theportion 5 from a device (known per se and not illustrated) for making the portion 5 (in particular by way of cutting from a continuous rod), through thecleaning station 11, to the coveringdevice 8. - According to some embodiments, the covering
device 8 is designed also to connect thefiltering portion 5 with, one or more, other filtering portions 15 (equal or different from one another;Figure 11 ). In this way, for example a multi-segment filteringpart 3 and thesmoking article 2 illustrated inFigure 11 can be obtained. The filteringportions 15 can be fed fromrespective storage bins 16. - Alternatively, the covering
device 8 is designed to cover only thefiltering portion 5. In said circumstances, a more traditional filteringpart 3 and smokingarticle 2, as illustrated inFigure 10 , can be obtained. - According to different embodiments, the
coupling device 12 is designed to connect the filteringpart 3 and theactive part 4 by means of band F (made of paper material) having a reduced size (as illustrated inFigure 10 ) or by using a leaf FF (made of paper material) having a larger size (as illustrated infigure 11 ) . - In particular, the
conveying system 13 comprises a transfer unit 17 (Figures 1 and2 ) to feed the filteringportions storage bins device 8 and a transfer unit 18 (Figures 2 and3 ) to feed the filteringpart 3 coming from the coveringdevice 8 towards thecoupling device 12. - According to some embodiments, the
machine 1 is such as that described in the international patent application under the publication numberWO2014072953 , with the exception of thecleaning device 10. - With particular reference to
Figures 4 to 7 , advantageously, thecleaning device 10 comprises a mechanical element designed to come into contact with thefiltering portion 5 to force the detachment of said part ofparticles 7 from thefirst material 6. - In particular, the mechanical element is designed to at least partially deform the

Figure 4 ) and/or a contrast belt 21 (Figure 6 ) and/or a contrast roller 22 (Figure 7 ), which comes into contact with theside surface 5". - Advantageously, the
