Description

  • The present invention relates to a method and to a machine for the production of smoking articles.
  • It is known to manufacture cigarettes comprising a filtering part, which has a filtering portion containing a mass of cellulose acetate fibres and loose particles of active carbon, and an active part, typically containing tobacco. The filtering part is usually obtained by wrapping the filtering portion with a strip of paper material.
  • This type of cigarettes and the methods for obtaining the same have several disadvantages, among which having particular relevance, is the fact that the quality of filters and/or the connection between the filter and other elements is not always satisfactory. Due to this about 10% of the produced cigarettes are discarded.
  • The object of the present invention is to provide a method and a machine for the production of smoking articles, which would allow to overcome, at least partially, the drawbacks of the prior art and which are, at the same time, inexpensive and easy to implement.
  • According to the present invention, a method and a machine for the production of smoking articles are provided, as claimed in the independent claims below, and, preferably, in any one of the claims depending, directly or indirectly, on the aforementioned independent claims.
  • The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate examples of nonlimiting embodiments, wherein:
    • Figures from 1 to 3 illustrate a machine according to the present invention;
    • Figure 4 is a perspective view, with certain details removed for clarity, of a part of the machine of Figure 1;
    • Figure 5 is a perspective view of a different embodiment of the part of Figure 4;
    • Figure 6 is a perspective view of a different embodiment of the part of Figure 4;
    • Figure 7 is a perspective view of a different embodiment of the part of Figure 4;
    • Figure 8 is a perspective view of a detail of a different embodiment of the part of Figure 4;
    • Figure 9 is a perspective view of a detail of a different embodiment of the part of Figure 4; and
    • Figures 10 and 11 are cross-sections of two different embodiments of smoking articles obtained according to the method of the present invention.
  • In Figures 1 to 3, 1 indicates as a whole a machine for the production of smoking articles 2 (Figures 10 and 11).
  • Each smoking article 2 (which, in particular, is a cigarette) comprises at least one filtering part 3 and at least one active part 4, in particular containing tobacco, to release a substance to be inhaled. The filtering part 3 comprises at least one filtering portion 5 having (containing; consisting of) a first material 6 and loose particles 7 (in particular of a second material different from the first material). More precisely, the particles 7 are dispersed in the first material 6.
  • Typically, the first material 6 is a mass of cellulose acetate fibres. In particular, the particles 7 are active carbon particles.
  • Typically, the filtering portion 5 has an oblong shape with two ends 5' opposite one to the other and a side surface 5" which extends between the two ends.
  • The machine 1 comprises a covering device 8 (Figure 2), which is designed to at least partially cover with a wrap 9 (typically of paper material), the filtering portion 5 (in particular, so as to obtain the filtering part 3), and a cleaning device 10 (Figure 1), which is arranged in the area of a cleaning station 11 and is designed to force at least part of the particles 7 to detach themselves from the first material 6 and be removed from the first material 6 itself.
  • In this manner, a significant improvement in the quality of the smoking article 2 is obtained, thus reducing (among other things) the risk that the particles may free themselves from the first material 6 thus reaching a position between the first material 6 itself and the wrap 9.
  • In some cases, the covering device 8 comprises a forming beam (of a known type) and the wrap 9 is obtained by transversely cutting a continuous strip (made of paper).
  • According to some embodiments, the machine 1 also comprises a coupling device 12 (Figure 3), which is designed to couple (and bind) the filtering part 3 and other portions (in particular, the active part 4).
  • In the embodiment illustrated in Figures from 1 to 3, the coupling device 12 is arranged downstream from the covering device 8. According to some alternatives not illustrated, the coupling device 12 and the covering device 8 coincide. In other words, according to said alternatives the filtering part 3 is simultaneously covered by the wrap 9 and bound to the active part 4. Typically, in these cases, the wrap 9 not only wraps the filtering part 3 but also connects it to the active part 4.
  • In particular, the machine 1 comprises a conveying system 13 to feed the portion 5 to the covering device 8 through the cleaning station 11 (and therefore through the cleaning device 12). More precisely, the covering device 8 is arranged on the outside (in particular, downstream) of the cleaning station 12.
  • In this way, it is possible to operate on (more precisely clean) the filtering portion 5 in a simple manner and in a relatively unrestricted area of the machine 1. The filtering portion 5 arrives at the covering device 8 already "clean" and, therefore, with less risk that the particles 7 which are released the filtering portion may interfere with the operation of the covering device 8.
  • In some cases, the conveying system 13 is designed to feed the portion 5 from a storage bin (hopper) 14 to the covering device 8 through the cleaning station 11. Alternatively, the conveying system 13 is designed to feed the portion 5 from a device (known per se and not illustrated) for making the portion 5 (in particular by way of cutting from a continuous rod), through the cleaning station 11, to the covering device 8.
  • According to some embodiments, the covering device 8 is designed also to connect the filtering portion 5 with, one or more, other filtering portions 15 (equal or different from one another; Figure 11). In this way, for example a multi-segment filtering part 3 and the smoking article 2 illustrated in Figure 11 can be obtained. The filtering portions 15 can be fed from respective storage bins 16.
  • Alternatively, the covering device 8 is designed to cover only the filtering portion 5. In said circumstances, a more traditional filtering part 3 and smoking article 2, as illustrated in Figure 10, can be obtained.
  • According to different embodiments, the coupling device 12 is designed to connect the filtering part 3 and the active part 4 by means of band F (made of paper material) having a reduced size (as illustrated in Figure 10) or by using a leaf FF (made of paper material) having a larger size (as illustrated in figure 11).
  • In particular, the conveying system 13 comprises a transfer unit 17 (Figures 1 and 2) to feed the filtering portions 5 and 15 from the storage bins 14 and 16 towards the covering device 8 and a transfer unit 18 (Figures 2 and 3) to feed the filtering part 3 coming from the covering device 8 towards the coupling device 12.
  • According to some embodiments, the machine 1 is such as that described in the international patent application under the publication number WO2014072953 , with the exception of the cleaning device 10.
  • With particular reference to Figures 4 to 7, advantageously, the cleaning device 10 comprises a mechanical element designed to come into contact with the filtering portion 5 to force the detachment of said part of particles 7 from the first material 6.
  • In particular, the mechanical element is designed to at least partially deform the filtering portion 5 so as to force the detachment of said part of particles 7 from the first material 6.
    According to different embodiments, the mechanical element comprises (is) a brush 19 (Figures 4-7) and/or a contrast block 20 (Figure 4) and/or a contrast belt 21 (Figure 6) and/or a contrast roller 22 (Figure 7).
  • In some cases, the mechanical element comprises (is) a brush 19 which comes into contact with one of the ends 5'.
  • In addition or alternatively, the mechanical element comprises (is) a contrast block 20 (Figure 4) and/or a contrast belt 21 (Figure 6) and/or a contrast roller 22 (Figure 7), which comes into contact with the side surface 5".
  • Advantageously, the cleaning device 10 comprises a sucking system 23 to remove the part of particles 7 forced to detach from the material 6 from the latter, by way of sucking.
  • With particular reference to Figures 8 and 9, according to some embodiments, the sucking system 23 comprises at least one sucking mouth 24 arranged in the area of each end 5'.
  • With particular reference to Figures 4 to 6, in some cases, the sucking system 23 comprises at least one sucking mouth 25 arranged in the area of (and oriented towards) the side surface 5".
  • According to some embodiments, the cleaning device 10 comprises a conveyor 26 (in particular a conveyor wheel) so as to feed the filtering portion 5 along a given path through an area in which said mechanical element (and eventually the sucking mouth 25) is arranged. More precisely, the conveyor 26 is designed to bring the filtering portion 5 into contact with the mechanical element.
  • In particular, the conveyor 26 comprises seats 27, each for housing a filtering portion 5.
  • In some cases, the sucking mouths 24 are arranged in a fixed position (along the given path Figure 8). Alternatively, the sucking mouths 24 are arranged in the area (more precisely to the sides) of each seat 27 (Figure 9). In other words, the sucking mouths 24 are, in this case, designed to move together with the filtering portion 5.
  • According to a second aspect of the present invention, a method for the production of smoking articles 2 is provided. The smoking articles 2 are as defined above. In particular, the method is implemented by the machine 1 described above (or, in other words, the machine 2 is designed to implement the method for the production of smoking articles 2).
  • The method comprises a covering step, during which the filtering portion 5 is covered with a wrap 9 (so as to obtain the filtering part 3), at least partially, in the area of a covering station 26 (in the area of which the covering device 8 is arranged).
  • The method comprises, furthermore, a cleaning step, during which at least one part of particles 7 are forced to detach themselves from the first material 6 and are removed from the first material 6 itself in the area of the cleaning station 11 (in the area of which the cleaning device 8 is arranged).
  • Advantageously but not limited to, the method comprises a conveying step to feed the filtering portion 5 to the covering station 26, through the cleaning station 11, which is different from the covering station 26. In particular, the cleaning step is prior to the covering step.
  • According to some embodiments, during the conveying step, the filtering portion is conveyed from a magazine 14 (containing a plurality of filtering portions 5) to the covering station 26 through the cleaning station 11.
  • According to some embodiments, the method comprises a coupling step, during which the filtering portion 5 (more precisely, the filtering part 3) and the active part 4 are coupled one to the other (so as to obtain the smoking article 2) in the area of a coupling station. The cleaning step is prior to the coupling step (and the coupling station is separated from, more precisely is downstream from, the cleaning station 11).
  • In some cases, the covering step and the coupling step are coincident.
  • Advantageously, during the cleaning step at least one mechanical element comes into contact with the filtering portion 5, in particular so as to at least partially deform it, in order to force the detachment of said part of particles 7 from the first material 6.
  • According to different embodiments, the mechanical element comprises (is) a brush 19 (Figures 4-7) and/or a contrast block 20 (Figure 4) and/or a contrast belt 21 (Figure 6) and/or a contrast roller 22 (Figure 7).
  • Advantageously, during the cleaning step, the mechanical element comes into contact with at least one of the ends 5' of the filtering portion. In these cases, in particular, the mechanical element comprises at least one brush 19.
  • Advantageously, during the cleaning step, the mechanical element comes into contact with the side surface 5" and, in particular, it comprises at least one among: a contrast block, a contrast roller, a contrast belt.
  • Advantageously, during the cleaning step, at least one sucking mouth 24 and/or 25 removes said part of particles 7 from the filtering portion 5 by way of sucking.
