Beim maschinellen Aufrichten und Verkleben erfindungsgemäßer Steigen ergeben sich Schwierigkeiten bei der Ausformung der bodenparallelen Auflageflächen, weil die Randlaschen im Bereich der Auflageflächen nicht an den Mantelwänden anliegen. Damit diese Schwierigkeiten vermieden werden, können die einwärts gefalzten Randlaschen zwischen den beiden Rilllinien zur Ausbildung einer Auflagefläche eine weitere Rilllinie aufweisen, die eine flächige Anlage der umgebogenen Lasche auch im Bereich der Auflagefläche erlaubt, die um diese zusätzliche Rilllinie gefalzt wird. Einfache Konstruktionsverhältnisse bei der Ausbildung der Auflageflächen ergeben sich auch, wenn die beiden Rilllinien zur Ausbildung einer bodenparallelen Auflagefläche in einem der doppelten Dicke der Randlaschen entsprechenden Abstand voneinander angeordnet sind und durch einen gegen den Mantel einwärts gefalzten Randabschnitt eine verdoppelte Laschendicke aufweisen. In diesem Fall umfasst der verstärkte Längsrandabschnitt drei durch entsprechende Falzungen gebildete Kartonlagen, was eine erhöhte Festigkeit für die Steigen mit sich bringt.
Die üblicherweise bedruckten Umfangswände der Steigen stellen den kostenaufwendigeren Teil eines Kartonzuschnitts dar. Um eine kostengünstige Steige zu erhalten, empfiehlt es sich daher, den Mantel als einen vom Boden gesonderten Zuschnitt auszubilden. Diese gesonderten Mantelzuschnitte erlauben eine bessere Ausnützung der für den Mantelzuschnitt erforderlichen Kartonbögen, wobei der Bodenzuschnitt aus einem billigeren Karton zugeschnitten werden kann. Im Sinne der Beschränkung des Kartons für den Mantelzuschnitt auf die hierfür unbedingt erforderlichen Mantelbereiche empfiehlt es sich außerdem, dass der Boden mit sich bis zu den Randlaschen der verstärkten Längsrandabschnitte des Mantelzuschnitts erstreckende Klebelaschen versehen wird, sodass die Umfangswände des Mantels durch die Klebelaschen des Bodenzuschnitts zusätzlich verstärkt werden, was unter Umständen dazu führen kann, dass die Dicke des für den Mantelzuschnitt eingesetzten Kartons verringert werden kann.
