Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cushioned coupling hinge for hingeing the seat or lid of a WC.
- hinges are used to hinge the seat (or ring) and lid thereof to the bowl of the WC. These hinges allow a rotation of the seat/lid in relation to the bowl, from a horizontal closed position, resting on the rim of the bowl, to a substantially vertical open position, in which the seat/lid is open to about 90 degrees and usually propped up against the wall to which the WC is joined.
- US 2006/112518 A1 discloses a compact cushioned coupling hinge for electronic device.
- the purpose of the present invention is to resolve the problems of the prior art taking into account the needs of the sector.
- the purpose of the present invention is to make a coupling hinge which is particularly compact and effective in its cushioning action.
- reference numeral 1 globally denotes a cushioned coupling hinge, for the seat or lid of a WC.
- FIG. 1 shows the application of a pair of hinges 1 to a WC 150 fitted with a seat (or ring) 151, lid 152 and bowl 154.
- Each hinge 1 hinges the seat 151 and relative lid 152 to the bowl 154.
- the hinge 1 cushions the return movement of the seat 151 or lid 152, accompanying it during the rotation around the rotation axis X, in the descent from a substantially vertical open position to a substantially horizontal closed position, resting on the rim 153 of the bowl 154.
- seat is understood to mean the ring portion that is used to avail of the WC in a seated position; the term “lid” means the element fitting over the seat suitable to close the WC.
- Figure 2 shows the application of at least one hinge to a drop-front cabinet 60, with a door 61 and a frame 62.
- the hinge 1 hinges the door 61 to the frame 62. - the elastic element 50 is inserted in the chamber 23 of the first element 20 to assemble the cushioning mechanism.
- the elastic element 50 is positioned with a first end 51 in abutment against a first side 241 of the tooth 24.
- the body 31 of the second element 30 is inserted in the chamber 23 so that the tab 34 is in abutment against a second side 242 of the tooth 24.
- a free space L remains between a second end 51 of the elastic element 50 and the tab 34 of the second element 30.
- the attachment of the cushioning mechanism is obtained by means of the insertion of an attachment element 80, for example a screw 80, through the inner lumens 35 and 33 of the second element 30, and the screwing of the first element 20 into the threaded inner lumen 251. Subsequently, the second element 30 and the first element 20 are attached to the respective fixed and mobile components.
- an attachment element 80 for example a screw 80
- FIGS 8a to 8c show the functioning steps of the cushioning mechanism during the descent of the mobile element.
- figure 8a shows the positioning of the cushioning mechanism when the seat 151 or the lid 152 is in the open position.
- the tooth 24 is in abutment against the tab 34 of the fixed element: this way the first element 20 cannot rotate further around the rotation axis X in an opening direction (A).
- Figure 8a shows the first element 20 in an initial work configuration in which it is not compressed between the tooth 24 and the tab 34.
- a first end 51 of the elastic element 50 is in abutment against the tooth 24 and a second end 51 of the elastic element 50 is free.
- the first element 20 is free to rotate without any obstructions or delays: the elastic element 50 is in fact free to rotate integrally with the first element 20, inside the chamber 23, at least for the section of free circumference of length L.
- Figure 8b shows the first element 20 in an intermediate work configuration in which it is compressed between the tooth 24 and the tab 34.
- a first end 51 of the elastic element 50 is in abutment against the tooth 24 and a second end 51 of the elastic element 50 is in abutment against the tab 34.
- the weight force starts to act on the seat 151 or on the lid 152, pushing in the closing direction (C).
- the first element 20 rotates around the rotation axis X, compressing the elastic element 50 against the tab 34 of the second element 30, elastic element 50 which opposes resistance to compression and slows the rotation of the first element 20.
- the weight force acting on the ring/ lid is lower in the initial stages of descent but increases progressively for greater inclinations of the ring / lid.
- Figure 8c shows the first element 20 in a final work configuration in which it is further compressed between the tooth 24 and the tab 34.
- the elastic element 50 expands, occupying all the space as far as abutting against the longitudinal walls of the chamber 23.
- the elastic element 50 expands in abutment with the bottom 232 of the chamber 23 and the bottom 37 of the body 31.
- the rigidity of the elastic element 50 limited in its transversal expansion, increases and the elastic element 50 opposes still greater resistance to compression (between the tooth 24 and the tab 34) further slowing down the rotation of the first element 20.
- the cushioning mechanism according to the present invention is simple and compact: all the essential elements of the mechanism are in fact housed within the chamber provided in the first element, without the need for large housing spaces.
- the cushioning mechanism thus realized acts only on the movement of the hinge during the closing phase of the seat/lid, without interfering with the lifting of the seat/lid.
- the cushioning mechanism thus realized, thanks to the presence of the tapered ends of the elastic element facilitates the reopening step of the lid/seat.
- the cushioned hinge coupling is applied to a swing door, for example of a garage, fitted with an electric system for opening only.
- the cushioned hinge comes into action in the closing phase of the swing door, as the elastic element accompanying the swing door in the descent from a substantially horizontal open position to a substantially vertical closed position.
- the application of the cushioned hinge to the closing phase of the swing door permits energy savings compared to traditional, electrical opening and closing systems, in that the closure does not require any electrical slowdown system.
- the first element 20 comprises a body 20a and an insert 20b insertable in a dedicated housing 29 of the body 20a.
- the insert 20b is provided with the chamber 23 suitable to house therein the elastic element 50 and, at least partially, the second element 30.
- the body 20a comprises a seat 25 suitable to house an attachment element, for example a screw.
- the bottom 28 of the insert 20b is provided with a through hole 26 for housing the seat 25.
- the insert 20b comprises the tooth 24, protruding from the inner circular wall towards the inside of the chamber 23, in the direction of the rotation axis X.
- the insert 20b is attachable inside the body 20a by means of a shaped coupling made between the bottom 28 of the insert 20b and the bottom 27 of the housing 29.
- the shape of the bottom 28 and the shape of the bottom 27 permits the shaped coupling of the insert 20b inside the body 20a both at 0 degrees and with a rotation of 90 degrees, even more preferably even with a rotation of 180 degrees and 270 degrees.
- the shaped coupling is realized for example by means of a square shape, or a four-pointed star, or through holes and protrusions positioned in correspondence with the cardinal points.
- Such constructive choice simplifies the production of the hinge: by making an insert couplable to the body with alternative rotations (0, 90, 180, 270 degrees), it is possible to obtain different coupling configurations of the hinge with the same two elements.
- the body 20a is made of metal, for example aluminium.
- the insert 20b is made of plastic material.
- Such constructive choice makes it possible to improve the sliding of the elastic element 50 inside the chamber 23.
- the first element is made entirely of metal, it may happen that after a prolonged period of non-use of the hinge, the elastic element adheres to the metal walls of the chamber so much so as to remain stuck, with consequent malfunction of the cushioning system.
- the insert 20b is made of plastic material, the elastic element in rubber 50 slides better along the walls of the plastic chamber 23.
- the production of the hinge is simplified: the geometry of the body 20a, preferably made of metal, is simplified since it has no tooth, and the more complex geometry of the insert 20b, provided with a tooth 24, is easily accomplished by moulding.
- the first element 20, and in particular the body 20a is suitable to be integrally constrained in rotation to a mobile component to be cushioned so as to rotate with it around a rotation axis X, and the second element 30 is suitable to be integrally constrained to a fixed component;
- the second element 30 comprises an attachment portion 32, with at least one interlocking joint 322 (or key) to make a shaped coupling with a suitable seat 71 of a support 70 provided on the fixed component.
- the second element 30 comprises a body 31 suitable to be inserted at least partially in the chamber 23 of the insert 20b, and is provided with the tab 34, protruding from the outer circular wall towards the outside of the body 31.
- the tab 34 comprises a through notch 39, for example rectangular, which divides the tab 34 at approximately half the length.
- the notch 39 is suitable to house a portion of the elastic element 50.
- the elastic element 50 is provided with a shaped end 58, for example in the shape of a T.
- the shaped end 58 comprises a foot 57 joined to the body of the elastic element 50 via a neck 56, at which two grooves 59 are formed between the foot 57 and the body of the elastic element 50.
- the elastic element 50 is attachable to the second element 30, and in particular, the shaped end 58 is attachable to the tab 34. Even more preferably, the neck 56 of the elastic element 50 is insertable in the notch 39 of the tab 34 so that the foot 57 acts as a stop against the walls of the tab 34.
- the cushioned hinge coupling according to the present invention is particularly simple to make and effective in the cushioning action.
- the cushioned hinge coupling according to the present invention acts selectively only in the phase of the rotation which requires cushioning.
- the cushioned hinge coupling according to the present invention is very compact and makes it possible to house all the essential elements of the cushioning mechanism inside a standard size hinge.
- the cushioned hinge coupling according to the present invention increases its cushioning effect as the force to be offset progressively increases.
