Definitions
- the invention is a circuit breaker (or a switch) provided with means reducing a switching arc appearing between the permanent contacts and its effects.
- the circuit breakers in question here have first contacts connected to an electrical terminal and second contacts connected to another terminal, the second contacts being movable relative to the first so as to allow opening or closing positions of the circuit breaker.
- the contacts each have a so-called permanent contact and an arcing contact, arranged so that upon disconnection, the permanent contacts separate first and the current is then transferred to the arcing contacts, which then separate.
- An electric arc is however formed between the arcing contacts and remains for a moment, before being extinguished by known means and in particular by blowing.
- the damage caused by the communication arc is present on the permanent contacts, at the feet of the arc, and also on surfaces close to the circuit-breaker, with the disadvantage that these surfaces are in the space between terminals, subjected to the fields the most intense electric, and they should therefore remain in a good surface and clean, without roughness, cavity or edge that adversely affects the dielectric strength of the disc.
- a main object of the invention is therefore to reduce or eliminate the effects of the switching arc. It is achieved by a general form of the invention, relating to a circuit breaker or switch comprising a first permanent contact and a first arcing contact and a second permanent contact and a second arcing contact, the second contacts being movable by to the first contacts so that the permanent contacts separate from one another before the arcing contacts during interrupt or disjunction motions, the second contacts being linear by extending in a direction of movement and the second permanent contact being placed between the first permanent contact and the contacts arc, sliding contacts, stationary relative to the first contacts, being in electrical connection with the second contacts, characterized in that the second permanent contact has a nose end directed towards the first contacts and separated from a main portion of the second permanent contact by a spacer insulating electricity said nose end and said main portion of each other, the sliding contacts are divided into a first portion in connection with the main portion of the second permanent contact and a second portion in connection with the nose end of the second permanent contact, the first permanent contact can be made
- the switching arc deploys in a confined area by the nose portion and remains remote from the first permanent contact, the portion of the second permanent contact which serves to establish the connection with it and surrounding volumes of the circuit breaker, which are subject to the electric fields and the surfaces must be protected. Its effects are all the smaller as the end of the nose is longer and especially if it extends to one end of the second arc contact.
- a dielectric cover can extend between the first permanent contact and the second portion of the contacts sliding, in order to further confine the switching arc, especially with respect to the first permanent contact.
- the circuit breaker comprises a terminal potential contact disposed between the first portion and the second portion of the sliding contacts, so as to establish an electrical connection with the nose end after the first permanent contact has separated from the second permanent contact during said interrupt or disjunction moments.
- Figure 1 shows the main parts of a circuit breaker according to the invention in a closed state.
- a first contact comprises a first permanent contact 1 and a first arcing contact 2, which are here fixed and connected to a first electrical terminal 3.
- the circuit breaker further comprises second contacts including a second permanent contact 4 and a second arcing contact 5 connected to a second electrical terminal 6.
- the circuit breaker is generally of revolution, and the contacts are circular, concentric with each other and generally cylindrical.
- the first arcing contact 2 is a rod-shaped male contact in the center of the apparatus;
- the second arc contact 5 is cylindrical and surrounds the previous one of in order to be able to enter into electrical connection with him;
- the first permanent contact 1 surrounds a nose end 8 of the second permanent contact 4 by being able to come into electrical connection with it.
- the first permanent contact 1 is a ring of sliding contacts on the nose end 8 cylindrical and can be deformed.
- the apparatus further comprises other sliding contact rings which connect the second terminal 6 to the second permanent contact 4, including a rear ring 9 in permanent electrical connection with a main portion 11 of the second permanent contact 4, behind the end nose 8 and which carries the flange 7, and an auxiliary ring 10, capable of establishing an electrical connection with the nose end 8.
- a dielectric spacer 12 electrically separates the nose end 8 from the main portion 11 of the first permanent contact 4 while mechanically connecting them; a potential-making contact 13 of the terminal 6 extends between the rear and auxiliary crowns 9 and 10 and is capable of coming into electrical connection with the nose end 8 at other states of the apparatus than that who is represented; and the nose end 8 has a step 14, that is to say a narrowing of its section, to an anterior part: the first permanent contact 4 establishes the electrical connection by sliding in the step 14, but the auxiliary ring 10 and the contact potential setting 13 establish the electrical connection to a posterior portion of the nose end 8 adjacent to the spacer 12 and out of the step 14.
- the second contacts 4 and 5 are movable and can be moved to the left of Figure 1 to establish an electrical disconnection state of the circuit breaker, from the connection state, which is shown in this figure, by pulling a rod operating maneuver 15 in the axis of the circuit breaker.
- a ring 16 which is only schematized, serves to support the rings 9, 10 of sliding contacts and the potential contact 13 and put them at the same potential since it is electrically conductive. It further comprises a dielectric cover 17 projecting radially inwards and which extends in the step 14 between the first permanent contact 1 and the auxiliary ring gear 10.
- the disconnection of the circuit breaker will now be described from the state of Figure 1. It consists of a progressive displacement of the movable contacts 4 and 5.
- the circuit breaker components are arranged so that the first change of state is a disconnection between the nose end 8 and the auxiliary contact ring 10, which is shown in Figure 2.
- a switching arc appears between the nose portion 8 and the auxiliary ring 10, the effects of which are however reduced since the arc is confined in the step 14 and does not reach the space between terminals of the circuit breaker, at the front of the nose end 8, where its effects would be more pronounced.
- the dielectric cover 17 completes this confinement by obstructing forward the second permanent contact 4 the volume left to the arc.
- the electric current is rapidly switched to the arcing contacts 2 and 5, which remain connected to each other, and the switching arc eventually goes out.
- the second step is a disconnection of the first permanent contact 1 and the nose end 8, shown in Figure 3.
- the disconnection places the nose end 8 at a floating potential, since it is supported only by the dielectric spacer 12. Contrary to known designs, the switching arc therefore did not extend from the first permanent contact, which is disposed in the space between terminals cleared.
- the next step is shown in FIG. 4 and consists of the reestablishment of an electrical connection between the nose end 8 and the second electrical terminal 6 via the potential contact 13, which reaches the rear portion. of the nose end 8.
- the second switching contact 4 is therefore set to the same potential.
- the current continues to flow between terminals 3 and 6 through the arc contacts 2 and 5, until further movement of the rod 15 disconnects them.
- the full open position of the circuit breaker is shown in FIG. 5.
- An electric arc was formed in known manner between the arcing contacts 2 and 5, and was then blown.
- the nose end 8 remains in connection with the potential contact 13. It is recommended that the sliding distance of the auxiliary ring 10 on the nose end 8 is at least 5 mm, so as to ensure a satisfactory contact in the closed position of the circuit breaker.
- the posterior portion of the nose end 8 must have a length accordingly.
- the maximum desired time between disconnections of the nose end 8 and the auxiliary ring 10, then the first permanent contact 1, is 2 ms, which corresponds to about 20 mm of travel between the states of Figures 2 and 3 corresponding to these disconnections, for a typical moving speed of 10 m / s of the moving contacts.
- the dielectric spacer 12 is dimensioned to withstand all potential differences that may appear between the second permanent contact 4 and the nose end 8 between the moments when it leaves the first permanent contact 1 and then touches the contact of potential 13.
- the closing operations of the circuit-breaker are carried out in inverse fashion and do not call for any particular comment.
