Definitions
- the invention relates to the technical field of locksmith and more particularly it refers to a lock assembly for sliding door or window panels made from aluminium, plastic or other material, the lock assembly proposed herein being characterized by the fact that it comprises at least one pair of locking points and is thoroughly encased within a metallic housing thereby offering an enhanced safety.
- EP 1 598 508 discloses a multipoint latching assembly for sliding doors and windows comprising a pair of cooperatively employed longitudinally extending abutting bars, such bars being provided within a vertically extending portion of the sliding profile member, wherein the first bar is fixedly mounted at a plurality of points of the sliding profile member and the other bar is provided with a plurality of latch means and performs a reciprocating movement upon activation of appropriate handle means by the user thereby accordingly setting the multipoint latching assembly at a locked or unlocked condition.
- the plurality of latch means of the reciprocatingly moving bar protruding outwardly of the sliding profile member engage with a corresponding plurality of suitably formed latch receiving members, which are mounted at functionally appropriate positions at the frame profile member located opposite to the plurality of latch means.
- the two cooperatively abutting bars are oblong with a width such as to allow them to pass freely through the opening at the vertically extending portion of the sliding door or window located opposite to the frame profile member and have a length such as to cover a desirable portion up to the entire length of the vertically extending portion of the sliding door or window.
- the first bar is fixedly mounted at a plurality of points by means of an arrangement of supporting blocks and bolts that pass through the supporting blocks and through both bars, such bolts being screwed until the bars abut onto an inner traverse wall of the sliding panel profile member and a pair of side flanges of the supporting blocks abut onto frontal side walls of the sliding panel profile member thereby providing counter support.
- the plurality of latch means of the second bar are adapted to pass through an equivalent plurality of channels of the first abovementioned bar, whereby the reciprocating movement of the second bar displaces the latch means along the channels of the first bar and allows them to engage with an equivalent number of latch receiving members provided along the oppositely facing vertically extending frame profile member thereby locking the panel at a plurality of points equivalent with the corresponding plurality of latch means and receiving members being employed.
- EP 1 598 508 proposed the connection of the two cooperatively abutting bars with an arrangement of automatic retraction and return means, such automatic retraction and return means comprising a plurality of pins provided with springs, such pins extending marginally forwardly the latch means so as to constitute the first points of contact in any involuntary collision whatsoever, thereby allowing, through the springs, the retraction of the second bar that is provided with the latch means with a scope of effectively protecting the latch means and the receiving members accordingly and thus safeguarding the overall locking assembly.
- automatic retraction and return means comprising a plurality of pins provided with springs, such pins extending marginally forwardly the latch means so as to constitute the first points of contact in any involuntary collision whatsoever, thereby allowing, through the springs, the retraction of the second bar that is provided with the latch means with a scope of effectively protecting the latch means and the receiving members accordingly and thus safeguarding the overall locking assembly.
- EP 2 207 945 disclosed a multipoint latching assembly comprising a single reciprocatingly moving bar provided with a plurality of latch means fixedly mounted within a vertically extending portion of the sliding profile member and a bar with an equivalent plurality of latch receiving members fixedly mounted onto the vertically extending length of the frame profile member located opposite to the above mentioned vertically extending frame end portion of the sliding profile member.
- the abovementioned single reciprocatingly moving bar is provided with a pair of side flanges at the ends thereof, such flanges extending at a plane different from the plane of the general length of the bar and being configured so as to form basements of a pair of supporting blocks by means of which the single bar is mounted onto the frontal inner walls of the sliding frame profile member, such basements being provided with longitudinal channels for the passage of connecting bolts, such longitudinal channels allowing said single bar to freely reciprocate during locking/unlocking operation of the multipoint locking assembly.
- the abovementioned supporting blocks are connected at the two side flanges of the bar in a manner such that the bar through the supporting blocks bears against the frontal inner walls on either side of the frontal opening of the sliding profile member, whilst through the connecting bolts of the supporting blocks it also bears against an interior transverse wall of the sliding profile member that separates the frontal chamber of the sliding profile member wherein the bar is installed from the central chamber of the sliding profile member wherein the locking activation mechanism is installed.
- a further simplification achieved in EP 2 207 945 is that instead of the utilisation of two distinct arrangements a) of means for mounting the bar onto the internal walls of the sliding profile member implemented by means of the abovementioned supporting blocks, and b) of means for the automatic retraction of the bar for averting possible damage either of the latch means and/or of the receiving members thereof in case of an involuntary collision of the sliding profile member onto the frame profile member with the latch means being positioned at locked condition, a single arrangement of spring carrying supporting blocks is employed for simultaneously accomplishing both the abovementioned functions of bar mounting and automatic bar retraction and return movement in case of a threatened involuntary collision of the latch, means onto the receiving members.
- spring carrying supporting blocks were rendered suitable for a number of different series of profiles for sliding panels that present small differences of dimensions and configuration and in particular small differences in the width dimension thereof, wherein this suitability of the same supporting block for a variety of different series of profiles for sliding panels is obtained with the curving of the exterior sides of the pair of legs of the supporting block, so as to facilitate the insertion of the supporting block through the frontal opening of the sliding profile member, the same being consequently brought to the operational position of bearing against the internal frontal walls of the sliding profile member through execution of a rotation of a variable arc with respect to the latch means carrier bar.
- a further deficiency of the abovementioned multipoint locking assemblies of the prior art is related to the difficulty of appropriately and handily orienting the lock assembly within the sliding profile member prior to proceeding in fixedly mounting the same thereupon.
- the metallic casing member of the invention is proposed with a ⁇ -section configuration and an interior transversal wall of the sliding profile member is proposed with a pair of nerves defining a channel within which the herein proposed ⁇ -section casing member handily fits thereby appropriately and handily orienting the lock assembly within the sliding profile member prior to proceeding with fixedly mounting the same thereupon. It is further proposed to provide a pair of plastic pads fitted at the ends of the metallic casing member, such pads advantageously protruding beyond the ⁇ -section casing member and being inserted within the channel provided longitudinally along the interior transversal wall of the sliding profile member.
- a further drawback of the abovementioned multipoint locking assemblies of the prior art is the combination of the functions of fixedly supporting the lock assembly and of ensuring an automatic retraction capacity in the spring carrying supporting blocks being employed for this purpose, since such combined functions may often give rise to difficulties in installation and result in possible functional failures.
- Still another drawback of the prior art is that it is a customary practice to install the locking assembly within the sliding profile member together with the lock driving mechanism thereof that is housed adjacently to the locking assembly within a chamber formed by a pair of parallel transversal walls of the sliding profile member, such lock driving mechanism being operated by a handle device positioned at an appropriately opened slot at the exterior of the sliding profile member.
- the position of the lock assembly within the sliding profile member conventionally has to be regulated so as to be brought at an appropriate position for being connected through screwing with the lock driving mechanism and associated handle device so that the lock assembly may thereafter follow the movements of such handle device. This process takes time and requires a skilled technician for being adequately implemented.
- a further object of the invention is to propose alternative means of mounting the lock assembly of the invention housed within the aforementioned metallic casing member onto the sliding profile member, such means including screws and/or connecting plates or butterfly connecting members, wherein with a scope of rendering the proposed lock assembly suitable for door or window panels made from profiles with varying sections and in consideration of the varying means of mounting being employed, said pair of plastic pads at the ends of the casing member are proposed with a varying length protruding beyond the casing member so as to appropriately account for the varying dimensions of mounting means being employed.
- a lock assembly for sliding doors or windows mounted within a vertically extending sliding door/window profile member and connected to a lock driving mechanism being activated by means of a reciprocating or a rotatable handle device, the lock assembly comprising at least one reciprocating locking bar with a pair of locking member receiving elements, which are displaced from an unlocked to a locked condition by the lock driving mechanism to receive and engage a pair of locking members mounted onto a frame profile member entering within a frontal opening of the sliding profile member when the latter is led to closed position, thereby rendering a locked condition of the lock assembly, wherein a ⁇ -section metallic casing member extending in the longitudinal direction of the sliding profile member houses the reciprocating locking bar with the pair of locking member receiving elements, such metallic casing member comprising two lateral walls and a side wall being disposed against the frontal opening of the sliding profile member, this side wall provided with a pair of openings adapted to allow introduction of the abovementioned locking members into the region of the reciprocating locking
- Alternative means are provided for securely connecting the ⁇ -section casing member through the end plastic pads thereof onto the sliding profile member, whilst the reciprocating locking bar that is longitudinally oriented in between the lateral walls of the ⁇ -section casing member and is adapted for reciprocating in sliding contact with the side wall thereof, further comprises a centrally located cylindrical sleeve and the lock driving mechanism comprises a hole located oppositely this cylindrical sleeve, wherein an elongate pin being fixedly connected within the cylindrical sleeve extends into the hole of the lock driving mechanism thereby effecting a rigid connection and subsequent joint movement of the reciprocating locking bar and the lock driving mechanism.
- the lock assembly of the invention is mounted within the vertically extending sliding door/window profile member 100 and in accordance with a preferred embodiment cooperates with a pair of locking members 22 provided onto an elongate plate 20 comprising holes 21a that is fixedly mounted onto the frame profile member 200 located oppositely the sliding door/window profile member 100 by means of bolts 21 being driven into the holes 21a as illustratively shown in Fig. 7 .
- the locking members 22 might by way of example be configured with divergent hook ends or they might be of a mushroom type configuration.
- the sliding profile member 100 comprises a pair of parallel surfaces 104, 105 transversely connected with a pair of parallel surfaces 102, 103.
- Four appropriately dimensioned lengths of the sliding profile member 100 are assembled to form a rectangular frame, a correspondingly sized glass or shutter panel being housed within such rectangular frame.
- Parallel surfaces 104, 105 of the sliding profile member 100 are provided with inwardly bent edges for the insertion of the abovementioned glass or shutter panel at the inner end of the rectangular frame, whereas an opening 110 is being formed at the exterior end of the same wherein cavities are being formed with additional ribs 101 adjacently to the bent edges of the sliding profile member 100, an appropriate rubber air-tight member being inserted within these cavities.
- the vertically extending frame profile member 200 provided with the locking members 22 mounted onto the elongate plate 20 is being arranged to enter through the abovementioned opening 110 when the sliding panel is being led to closed position, whereby locking members 22 are engaged within locking member engaging elements of a reciprocating locking bar 2 of the lock assembly mounted within the sliding profile member 100 as the lock assembly is set at locked position.
- An appropriately sized slot is opened at an ergonomically appropriate position in the pair of parallel surfaces 104, 105 for the insertion in the space provided in between transversal parallel surfaces 102, 103 of the reciprocating lock driving mechanism that alternately sets the lock assembly in the locked and the unlocked position, such reciprocating lock driving mechanism being alternatively moved by means of a reciprocating handle device 61 or a rotatable handle device 62.
- the lock assembly of the invention is connected to a reciprocating handle device 61, whereas as illustrated in Fig. 9 it is being connected to a rotatable handle device 62.
- a reciprocating handle device 61 As shown in the sectional view of the sliding profile member 100 taken across the region of the reciprocating handle device 61 ( Fig. 8a ) or in the sectional view of the sliding profile member 100 taken across the region of the rotatable handle device 62 ( Fig.
- the lock assembly of the invention mounted within the sliding profile member 100 and in particular the reciprocating locking bar 2 installed therein at an ergonomically appropriate operating position against the reciprocating handle device 61 or the rotatable handle device 62 comprises a centrally located cylindrical sleeve 2f, an elongate pin 6 being screwed within this cylindrical sleeve 2f and extending towards the abovementioned lock driving mechanism wherein the pin snaps without being screwed or otherwise secured in a suitably arranged hole 6a of the lock driving mechanism thereby ensuring a rigid connection of the reciprocating locking bar 2 to the lock driving mechanism and subsequent joint movement of bar 2 and of the lock driving mechanism as the lock assembly is being brought at a locked or unlocked condition.
- This method of connection of the lock assembly mounted within the sliding profile member 100 to the reciprocating handle device 61 or to the rotatable handle device 62 is particularly advantageous since it is an absolutely safe connection that allows placement of the reciprocating or rotatable handle device in a simple and quick manner after completion of construction works thereby avoiding undesirable damages that may occur with the premature placement of the lock assembly whilst construction works are still in progress as is the case with lock assemblies of the prior art. It is further noted that mounting of the reciprocating handle device 61 or of the rotatable handle device 62 on completion of the construction works is made without requiring any prior adjustment whatsoever.
- the reciprocating handle device 61 reciprocates upwardly/downwardly and the rotatable handle device 62 performs a rotation through 90° or 180°, such reciprocating or rotational movement of the handle device resulting in a simultaneous reciprocating upward or downward stroke of the locking bar 2 within the sliding profile member 100, the stroke being such as to alternatively lock or unlock the lock assembly as shown in Figures 5e and 5f respectively.
- the aforementioned reciprocating locking bar 2 is an oblong rectangular plate comprising coplanar surfaces 2a and 2b, wherein surface 2a extends at one side of the centrally located cylindrical sleeve 2f adapted to receive the elongate pin 6 that connects the reciprocating locking bar 2 to the lock driving mechanism, such cylindrical sleeve 2f extending at a bridge member 2c that subsequently extends to surface 2b.
- the locking bar 2 is positioned in the direction of the vertically extending sliding profile member 100.
- Tubular shafts 2d, 2e are provided onto the locking bar 2 facing towards the lock driving mechanism means with the reciprocating or rotatable handle device 61 or 62, a pair of locking member engaging elements 3 being connected with such tubular shafts 2d, 2e, such locking member engaging elements 3 being adapted to firmly engage the locking members 22 protruding into the sliding profile member 100 as the frame profile member 200 enters through the opening 110 when the sliding panel is being led to closed position.
- the length of the surface portion 2b of the reciprocating locking bar 2 is shorter than that of the surface portion 2a thereof and the bridge member 2c extends in a plane parallel to the reciprocating locking bar 2, such configuration allowing an unhindered stroke of the locking member engaging element 3 that is mounted onto the tubular shaft 2e located onto the surface portion 2b.
- protruding heads 2a', 2b' are provided at appropriate points onto the surfaces 2a, 2b of bar 2 behind the side with the tubular shafts 2d, 2e, such protruding heads 2a', 2b' producing a sound effect as the reciprocating locking bar 2 slides in contact with the plastic pads 7 during movement of the locking assembly from an unlocked to a locked position and vice versa as will be explained hereinafter.
- the reciprocating locking bar 2 is longitudinally oriented in between side surfaces 10a, 10b of a ⁇ -section casing member 1 of the lock assembly of the invention and is fixedly mounted therein by means of a generally rectangular plastic sole member 8 ( Fig. 1a ), which includes a pair of lateral linear projections 8a arranged so as engage within correspondingly shaped receiving channels (33a) oppositely located at the lateral walls 10a, 10b of the ⁇ -section casing member 1 ( Fig. 5d ).
- each of the locking member engaging elements 3 comprises a fork shaped portion 3b being adapted to firmly engage the locking members 22 and a planar portion 3a with a centrally located hole 3d.
- the locking member engaging elements 3 are being assembled to the reciprocating locking bar 2 with the tubular shafts 2d and 2e thereof guided into the centrally located holes 3d of the planar portions 3a thereby rendering the latter to abut onto the surface portions 2a and 2b of bar 2 respectively, whilst fork shaped portions 3b extend along the same plane of the abovementioned coplanar surface portions 2a and 2b of bar 2 due to an intermediate portion 3c of the locking member engaging element 3 that is perpendicularly oriented in relation to the planar portion 3a and the fork shaped portion 3b of the locking member engaging element 3.
- the locking member engaging elements 3 are provided with an automatic retraction capacity enabled in the case of unintended impact thereof onto the locking members 22 whilst the lock assembly is inappropriately positioned at the locked condition.
- This automatic retraction capacity is being attained with return springs 4 being wound around tubular shafts 2d, 2e of surfaces 2a and 2b of bar 2 respectively and sitting onto the planar portions 3a of the locking member engaging elements 3 at the perimeter of the centrally located holes 3d thereof, wherein the return springs 4 are firmly secured in place by means of washers 5.
- the lock assembly of the invention is characterized by the ⁇ -section casing member 1 within which it is encased and within which reciprocates the locking bar 2 provided with the locking member engaging elements 3.
- the ⁇ -section casing member 1 is appropriately configured for providing alignment and secure connection of the lock assembly within the sliding profile member 100.
- the ⁇ -section casing member 1 is provided with two lateral walls 10a, 10b being oriented in a direction parallel to the parallel surfaces 104, 105 of the sliding profile member 100, whilst a side wall 10c of the ⁇ -section casing member 1 is disposed against the opening 110 and the locking bar 2 reciprocates in contact with the interior thereof.
- a pair of openings 31a, 31b is provided onto the side wall 10c of the ⁇ -section casing member 1, such openings being adapted to receive the locking members 22 when the frame profile member 200 enters through opening 110 of the sliding profile member 100.
- the ⁇ -section casing member 1 is further provided with means of appropriately orienting and securely connecting it within the sliding profile member 100.
- this means of appropriately orienting and securely connecting it within the sliding profile member 100 is a pair of plastic pads 7, such pads 7 depicted in Figs. 6, 6a, 6b, 6c being a generally parallelepipedal element having a width allowing its introduction within the gap in between the lateral walls 10a, 10b at the ends of the casing member 1 and within the channel that is being formed by a pair of protruding ribs 102a, 102b onto the transversal wall 102 of the sliding profile member 100 ( Fig. 1b , 2b , 3b , 4b ).

- the longitudinal surface 73 of the plastic pad 7 when the latter is fitted within casing member 1 does not exceed beyond the lateral walls 10a, 10b thereof and in this case it is the casing member 1 itself that enters within the gap that is being formed by the pair of protruding ribs 102a, 102b onto the transversal wall 102 of the sliding profile member 100.
- plastic pads 7 normally exceed beyond the casing member 1 and, as shown in these Figures, differentially sized plastic pads 7, all exceeding beyond casing member 1 are employed with a scope of ensuring convenient cooperation thereof with the means employed for mounting the casing member 1 within the sliding profile member 100, as will be presented in detail hereinafter.
- Each plastic pad 7 has the flat surface portion 71 b that is located proximally to the end of casing member 1 comprising a pair of holes 12a' adapted to receive a pair of fastening screws 12 ( Fig. 1 , 1a ) or other fastening means, which pass axially through coincident holes 12a provided along side wall 10c at each end of the casing member 1, whilst the other flat surface portion 71 a of the plastic pad 7 is covered with a curvilinear strip 7a whose length corresponds to the length of the stroke of the reciprocating locking bar 2 from the unlocked position to the locked position and vice versa.
- the protruding heads 2a', 2b' provided at appropriate points onto these portions of surfaces 2a, 2b of bar 2 that slide in contact with the curvilinear strip 7a, whereby a sound effect is being produced as these portions of the reciprocating locking bar 2 slide in contact with such curvilinear strips 7a of the plastic pads 7 during movement of the locking assembly from an unlocked to a locked position and vice versa, such sound effect being characteristic of the movement of the lock assembly of the invention.
- Each plastic pad 7 is also provided with a pair of lateral protruding ribs 72a, 72b on either side thereof, such protruding ribs 72a, 72b being arranged to snap into correspondingly shaped and correspondingly spaced receiving cavities 32a, 32b ( Fig. 5c ) on either side along each one of the lateral walls 10a, 10b of casing member 1.
- Each plastic pad 7 is also provided with a flattened terminal end 7b that abuts at the edge of surfaces 10a-10b-10c of casing member 1 thereby acting as a stop member when installing plastic pads 7 at the ends of casing member 1.
- a further hole 9a is provided adjacently to the pair of holes 12a' of the aforementioned surface portion 71b of the plastic pad 7.
- Hole 9a is axially coincident with hole 11a provided onto the side wall 10c of the casing member 1, and a nut 9 is inserted therein.
- a damper member 11 is mounted therein with a screw 10 that is driven into the nut 9.
- the damper members 11 are made from soft plastic material and protrude forwardly side wall 10c of casing member 1 at both ends thereof thereby defining the points of smooth and noise-free impact of the sliding profile member 100 with the frame profile member 200 entering within the same without any damage.
- the protruding length of damper members 11 may be desirably adjusted by varying the depth of screwing screw 10 into nut 9.
- the means of securely mounting the casing member 1 is two pairs of screws 12, a pair of screws 12 at each end of the casing member 1 successively passing through axially coincident holes 12a of casing member 1 and 12a' of plastic pads 7 and firmly screwed into transversal wall 102 of the sliding profile member 100.
- the means of securely mounting the casing member 1 is a pair of connecting plates 13 with bent ends 13b, one connecting plate 13 being mounted onto each end of casing member 1 by means of a screw 14 that successively passes through axially coincident holes 13a located at the center of plate 13, hole 12a of the casing member 1 and hole 12a' of the plastic pad 7 without extending to the transversal wall 102 of the sliding profile member 100.
- the plates 13 have a width that corresponds to the width of the side wall 10c of casing member 1 onto which it abuts and a length that exceeds the width of side wall 10c and is marginally less than the width of the sliding profile member 100 as measured by the distance between the parallel surfaces 104 and 105 thereof.
- the assembled lock assembly is inserted within sliding profile member 100 with plates 13 being aligned longitudinally along the side wall 10c of casing member 1, such plates 13 being thereafter turned at an angle of 90° thereby extending in a direction perpendicular to the side wall 10c and parallel to the transversal wall 102 of the sliding profile member 100 with their bent ends 13b in contact with the ribs 101 adjacently to the inwardly bent edges of the sliding profile member 100 at the opening 110 thereof thereby providing a counter support.
- the means of securely mounting the casing member 1 is a combination of a pair of connecting plates 13 and a pair of screws 12, one screw 12 at each end of the casing member 1, as is the case with the embodiment depicted in Fig.
- the means of securely mounting the casing member 1 is a pair of U-shaped butterfly connecting members 15, one such butterfly connecting member 15 at each end of the casing member 1 fixed thereupon by means of screws 16, such screws successively passing through a central hole 15a of the butterfly connecting members 15 and through axially coincident holes 12a of casing member 1 and holes 12a' of the plastic pads 7 without extending further into the transversal wall 102 of the sliding profile member 100.
- Each of the butterfly connecting members 15 is a U shaped element with lateral arms having flattened ends 15b extending at a width that corresponds to the width of the side wall 10c of the casing member 1 along which they abut, their flattened ends 15b being adapted to contact the ribs 101 adjacently to the inwardly bent edges of the sliding profile member 100 at the opening 110 thereof thereby providing a counter support.
- the plastic pads 7 have a lower height due to the extensive length requirement for the two lateral arms of the butterfly connecting members 15 to reach the counter-acting ribs 101 of the sliding profile member 100.
- the lock assembly as described hereinabove may be extended to comprise a selected number of further identical lock assembly units, which are disposed above and/or below the centrally located lock assembly unit that is being connected to the lock driving mechanism operated by either a reciprocating or a rotatable handle device 61 or 62 respectively and which are arranged to perform a simultaneous identical stroke as the centrally located lock assembly is being driven from an unlocked to a locked position and vice versa.
- Fig. 10 shows a perspective view of an illustrative embodiment of such an extended lock assembly, wherein the centrally located lock assembly of the invention extends into a further identical lock assembly unit to which it is connected by means of a transmission plate 90. Accordingly Fig. 10 shows the sliding profile member 100 adapted to receive this extended lock assembly device and the frame profile member 200 comprising a pair of correspondingly spaced plates 20 with identical pairs of locking members 22.
