Abhängig von der Qualität des Tabaks, vorzugsweise der Tabakmischung, kann sowohl eine hohe Füllfähigkeit als auch ein bestimmter Geschmack Ziel der Trocknung sein. Es ergibt sich also eine hohe Variabilität, wenn die Austauschfläche zwischen Luft und Tabak einstellbar gestaltet wird, und dies wird erfindungsgemäß durch relativ zu dem Trommelkörper verstellbare Hubschaufeln erreicht. Tabakmischungen umfasst eine drehbar gelagerte Trommel 10 mit einem Trommelkörper 11, der insbesondere zylindrisch ausgeführt ist, wobei hiervon nicht nur kreisrunde Querschnitte, sondern beispielsweise auch mehreckige bzw. vieleckige Querschnitte umfasst sind. Die Trommel 10 weist nicht gezeigte äußere Mantelund Stirnwände auf. Im Inneren der Trommel 10 bzw. des Trommelkörpers 11 ist somit ein Trocknungsraum 12 für den zu trocknenden Tabak gebildet. Das Drehlager für die Trommel 10 sowie Einrichtungen zum Rotieren der Trommel 10 im Trocknungsbetrieb sind in den Figuren nicht gezeigt.
