Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method for operating a thread-sewing machine for processing printed sheets into book blocks according to claim 1.
  • the invention also relates to a thread-sewing machine for carrying out the method for processing printed sheets into book blocks according to claim 14.
  • Book sewing machines have become known, which can be fed to the stitching saddle both manually and automatically.
  • Book sewing machines are known in which printed sheets folded by a printing machine can be automatically fed to the stitching saddle.
  • the state of the art includes a thread sewing machine which is operated inline and/or offline.
  • the loading of the stitching saddle does not take place via an additional infeed device, but rather from the side via an auxiliary saddle (horizontal loading).
  • a digital printing machine or a folding machine can be connected to the auxiliary saddle, which places the folded and opened printed sheets directly on the auxiliary saddle.
  • a carrier chain then transports the printed sheet to the stitching saddle, and an imposition roller or a transport belt then transports the printed sheet to the stitching saddle.
  • only several printed sheets can be attached one after the other or individual signatures can be processed.
  • On the auxiliary saddle can be pre-collected, or unfolded signatures can be collected and then placed. However, collected individual signatures coming from the digital printing machine can be fed to the stitching saddle and stitched there.
  • EP 2 305 485 A1 discloses a method according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • the object of the invention is to propose a thread sewing machine which is able to take the printed sheets fed to the sewing saddle from at least two different directions.
  • the thread sewing machine essentially consisting of at least one transport system for the signatures and at least one subsequent sewing station.
  • the sewing station itself is operated in operative connection with at least one stapling saddle, this stapling saddle in turn being in operative connection with the transport system for the signatures.
  • the signatures processed in the sewing station are fed in a vertical or quasi-vertical plane and in a horizontal or quasi-horizontal plane relative to the stitching saddle, and the signatures are fed to the sewing station astride the stitching saddle. At least the vertical or quasi-vertical feeding of the signatures takes place directly on the stitching saddle.
  • the inventive thread sewing machine is designed so that the signatures later fed to the sewing station, also known as signatures, are primarily made via a feed device operating in the vertical direction, the signature feed of which is always directed towards the stitching saddle.
  • a feed device operating in the vertical direction, the signature feed of which is always directed towards the stitching saddle.
  • Such an infeed device will preferably have the form of a gripper drum, which is preferably arranged above the stitching saddle.
  • this configuration according to the invention does not exclude the possibility that horizontally operating devices can also be provided within such a loading process, which take over the printed sheet delivery, for example, as an intermediate step to the stitching saddle.
  • infeed devices in the foreground in order to carry out such a horizontal printed sheet feed.
  • the method that has become known from the prior art consists in making the horizontal delivery of the printed sheets, even in the case of an intermediate provision, via a stationary auxiliary saddle.
  • Another option for horizontal feeding is to finally push the printed sheets onto the stitching saddle with a compact infeed device arranged to the side of the stitching saddle, which can essentially also have the form of a gripper drum and has kinematics that enable the printed sheet to be pushed first in position opposite to the saddle to be loaded, and then to push this sheet directly onto the saddle by a horizontally acting element.
  • a compact infeed device arranged to the side of the stitching saddle, which can essentially also have the form of a gripper drum and has kinematics that enable the printed sheet to be pushed first in position opposite to the saddle to be loaded, and then to push this sheet directly onto the saddle by a horizontally acting element.
  • the said vertically/horizontally acting infeed device should be arranged on the other front side of the stitching saddle.
  • Such an intermediate feed of specially designed printed sheets can also be easily achieved via the vertical infeed device, i.e. via the gripper drum, either directly to the stitching saddle or with an additional horizontal infeed.
  • Such intermediary additions can also be made via a stationary auxiliary saddle, with this supply taking place at the side of the stitching saddle, and the auxiliary saddle can be arranged either on the left or right or on both sides of the stitching saddle, which means that a great variety of designs with regard to different printed sheets can be achieved.
  • the printed sheets can be fed onto the auxiliary saddle via a vertically acting infeed device, preferably via a further gripper drum.
  • the printed sheets are delivered to the stitching saddle via both feed levels, i.e. vertical and horizontal, or vertical/vertical/horizontal, delivery can be achieved via intermediate cyclical sequences, which lead to an increase in productivity.
  • the direction from which the majority of the printed sheets are to be fed is a product-dependent disposition.
  • the book sewing machine according to the invention is also capable of feeding the printed sheets to the stitching saddle both automatically from the magazine via a gripper drum (vertical) and manually/automatically from a printing press/folder via an auxiliary saddle (horizontal).
  • the thread sewing machine according to the invention is also able to feed printed sheets simultaneously vertically and horizontally onto the stitching saddle or an auxiliary saddle within a production run.
  • the thread sewing machine according to the invention is also capable of reliably processing a number of different formats within a book block.
  • a transport section for printed sheets is proposed, which is operated between an opening system acting upstream and a sewing station arranged downstream.
  • This transport route essentially consists of an auxiliary saddle and a downstream stitching saddle.
  • Auxiliary saddles and stitching saddles are designed as autonomously acting sub-transport routes, which, however, have an operational interdependence with respect to the transport of the printed sheets according to the invention.
  • This mode of operation according to the invention is independent of whether purely "normal-format" printed sheets are transported or whether intermittently "small-format” printed sheets are processed.
  • the thread sewing machine according to the invention is characterized in that the vertical infeed, which can preferably take place via a gripper drum, takes over the loading of the sewing saddle.
  • Such a gripper drum can be used in various ways: for example, above the stapling saddle that is in the loading position, or to the side of it.
  • FIG. 1 shows a method for operating a thread sewing machine 1 inline - offline - combined with external and internal sheet feed 2, 3, with e.g. different formats within a book block 4.
  • 6 folded signatures 5 are to be processed into a book block, with 5 signatures (No. 1 , 2, 3, 4 and 6) have the same format and are to be fed automatically by a digital press.
  • Signature No. 5 has a smaller format and, in order to avoid time-consuming collation with the other signatures, should be fed directly to the processing operation of book sewing machine 1.
  • the signatures no. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 are folded and placed one after the other on the auxiliary saddle 6 and successively drawn or shot horizontally onto the stitching saddle 7 in cycles. This happens in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 0, 6.
  • 0 means that in the auxiliary saddle feeding process, after the fourth signature, a gap in the form of an idle bar is left to make room for signature No. 5 on the stitching saddle 7.
  • All signatures No. 5 are placed in the internal magazine of the thread sewing machine 1, removed, guided under the sewing saddle 7 with the open side first, deflected upwards by 90°, opened and conveyed vertically to the sewing saddle by the gripper drum.
  • the gripper drum 8 only works in the 5th cycle, since it is controlled by a servo motor.
  • the gripper drum 8 conveys the signature no. 5 vertically onto the stitching saddle 7 and thus closes the gap in the printed sheet run.
  • the 6th and last signature of the book is fed horizontally again via the auxiliary saddle. After that, the process starts again.
  • signatures 1, 2, and 3 in 2 are now successively drawn horizontally onto the stapling saddle 7 via the auxiliary saddle 6 or shot and tacked one after the other. While now signature no. 4 is fed horizontally to the binding saddle 7, at the same time signature no. 5 is placed vertically on the binding saddle 7 and thus over the signature no. The leading edge of signature no. 4 has previously passed geometrically the trailing edge of signature no. 5 fed in from above, so that a collision does not occur. Both signatures are now plugged into each other and can now be attached to signature no. 3. After that, the gripper drum 8 stands still and signature no. 6 is conveyed horizontally to the stitching saddle 7 again in the next and last cycle. Now the process can start again.
  • the process described below corresponds to a simultaneous loading of the stitching saddle with two printed sheets of different formats both via the gripper drum and via the auxiliary saddle within one machine cycle.
  • the two printed sheets are inserted into one another on the saddle and then stapled to the previous signature.
  • both the auxiliary saddle and the gripper drum are each equipped with a signature and should be fed to the stitching saddle: 1°: The stitching saddle reaches the loading position. 2° - 45°: The front edge of the printed sheet of signature 4 on the auxiliary saddle reaches the stitching saddle and is accelerated in the direction of the printed sheet stop by the injection roller. 20° - 85°: The bottom edge of the signature 5 on the gripper drum reaches the tip of the saddle and is placed on the saddle. At this point in time, the leading edge of the signature 4 has already passed the trailing edge of the signature 5, so that the two printed sheets cannot collide.
  • thread sewing machines can be optionally expanded, which can have different concepts.
  • the variants described here which are not shown in more detail by figures, can be readily grasped by a person skilled in the art and are not to be understood as conclusive concepts.
  • One variant relates to a book sewing machine that is operated offline.
  • This version is the classic type of thread sewing machine.
  • the stitching saddle is supplied by one or more of its own magazines. It is irrelevant whether classic thread sewing (stapling several printed sheets one after the other) or saddle stitching (stitching several printed sheets on top of each other) is practiced.
  • the machine is not connected to the outside world, but produces independently.
  • the printed sheets are removed from the magazine, placed on a conveyor belt and guided under the stitching saddle with the open side first, deflected upwards by 90°, opened, gripped by the gripper drum, steered around its own axis and placed on the stitching saddle (vertical loading) and then stapled one behind the other or one above the other.
  • Another variant relates to a thread sewing machine, which is operated inline - offline - combined.
  • the loading takes place either vertically via the gripper drum and horizontally via the auxiliary saddle (one signature is pulled or shot laterally onto the binding saddle and the other is placed vertically over the gripper drum) or staggered in cycles, for example 3 signatures in a row from the auxiliary saddle , then an idle cycle from the auxiliary saddle and in this idle cycle a printed sheet is placed vertically over the gripper drum onto the stitching saddle. Or, for example, 4 signatures in a row from the auxiliary saddle without an idle cycle and over the last signature or another signature another signature is placed vertically by the gripper drum.
  • the possible combinations here are very versatile and particularly suitable for processing at least 2 different formats in one book (art print) or for being able to insert printed sheets of different formats into one another.
  • Another variant relates to a thread sewing machine, which is operated inline - external sheet feeding.
  • 5 folded signatures coming from a digital printing machine or a folding machine are to be processed into a book block.
  • the digital printing machine or folding machine docked to the side of the auxiliary saddle of the thread sewing machine takes over the folding and placing of the printed sheets.
  • the folded signatures are opened and placed one after the other on the auxiliary saddle in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and pushed individually via a carrier chain in the direction of the stitching saddle.
  • the transport length of a driver chain strand corresponds to a stapling machine cycle.
  • the first driver now pushes the printed sheet to be stapled up to the stapling saddle that is in the loading position.
  • the signature is either shot onto the stitching saddle by an accelerator roller or pulled onto the stitching saddle using a belt transport system.
  • the stapling saddle then moves to the stapling position and staples the signature.
  • the attachment saddle moves back to the loading position and the process begins again.
  • the stapling saddle is loaded exclusively horizontally from the outside via the auxiliary saddle.
  • the gripper drum inside the machine for vertical loading of the stitching saddle is initially not in operation, but can be put into operation at any time if required.
  • Another variant relates to a thread sewing machine, which offline - internal sheet feed is operated.
  • 4 folded signatures are to be processed into one book block.
  • the signatures to be stapled are placed in the machine's own magazine in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, ... and removed one after the other, guided under the staple saddle with the open side first, guided 90° upwards in the direction of the saddle, opened and rotated around its own axis via a gripper drum and placed on the stitching saddle.
  • Moved after each signature placed the stapling saddle moves from the loading position to the stapling position and the signature is stapled. After that, the process starts again.
  • the loading of the stitching saddle takes place exclusively internally (vertically) via its own magazine and the gripper drum.
  • the horizontal auxiliary saddle and any connected digital printing machine or folding machine are therefore not in operation.
  • a brochure to be processed consists, for example, of three individual folded printed sheets that are to be collected one on top of the other and then stapled with one stitch and secured against loosening with an additional empty stitch.
  • the folded printed sheets are inserted into the magazine in the order 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, .. and pulled off one after the other, guided under the saddle with the open side first, guided 90° upwards in the direction of the saddle, opened and rotated by approx. 180° via a gripper drum and placed on the stitching saddle.
  • the second printed sheet is now laid over the first printed sheet and then the third printed sheet over the servo-controlled saddle of the saddle stitching machine.
  • the stitching saddle moves from the loading position to the stitching position and the brochure is stitched and a blank stitch is executed. After that, the process starts again.
  • the loading of the stitching saddle takes place exclusively internally (vertically) via its own magazine and the gripper drum.
  • the horizontal auxiliary saddle and any connected digital printing machine or folding machine are therefore not in operation.
