Description

APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING VEHICLE ENTRY TO AND/OR EXIT FROM A
SPACE DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to an apparatus for controlling vehicle entry to and/or exit from a space, for example a public or private car park, a limited transit zone or road, or a toll zone or toll road, or more generally any space with limited entry and/or exit.
The use is widely known of control apparatus to manage the vehicle entry to / exit from a space with limited access, such as pay parking area.
These control apparatus typically comprise at least one entrance station and one exit station to regulate traffic entering and exiting the space in question.
The entrance station comprises a device for controlling transit along the entrance lane, generally a device for issuing tickets indicating the entry time.
This control device is operatively associated with a barrier device, positioned at a certain distance, along the entrance lane.
The barrier device is provided with a moving barrier, such as a bar, to obstruct or allow transit along the entrance lane.
Normally, the barrier device maintains the moving barrier in an operating position in which it obstructs transit along the entrance lane.
After collecting the entry ticket, the control device sends control signals to the barrier device which removes the barrier from the entrance lane, so as to allow transit of the entering vehicle.
After transit of the vehicle, the barrier device returns the moving barrier to its normal operating position.
Similarly, the exit station comprises a further control device, typically a device to pay for the time spent in the parking area or to receive the endorsed/obliterated entry ticket.
This control device also controls operation of a further barrier device, positioned at a certain distance along the exit lane, so as to regulate transit of vehicles along this latter.
Conventional apparatus for controlling vehicle entry to and/or exit from a space have some problems.
In general, these apparatus comprise a relatively complex structure, with numerous elements to be assembled/installed, and is characterized by considerable dimensions.
Moreover, the installation times and costs of these apparatus are often relative high. In fact, costly building works (excavation, foundations and piping) are often required to install and electrically connect the parts of the apparatus. Naturally, this translates into an increase in the total set up costs.
The main aim of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for controlling vehicle entry to and/or exit from a space that allows the aforesaid problems to be solved.
Within this aim, an object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus having a relatively simple structure and limited overall dimensions.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus having lower installation and set up costs compared to prior art control apparatus.
One more object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus that can be easily produced with economically competitive industrial processes.
This aim, and said and other objects which will be more apparent below, are achieved through an apparatus for controlling vehicle entry to / exit from a space, according to the following Claim 1.
In its most general definition, the apparatus according to the invention comprises at least one barrier device, provided with at least a first moving barrier element and first actuator means to move the aforesaid first barrier element.

- Fig. 1 schematically shows the structure of the apparatus according to the present invention in a first embodiment thereof;
- Fig. 2 schematically shows the structure of the apparatus according to the present invention in a further embodiment thereof;
- Fig. 3 schematically shows a portion of the apparatus according to the present invention in the embodiment of Fig. 1 or of Fig. 2; and
- Fig. 4 schematically shows a further portion of the apparatus according to the invention in the embodiment of Fig. 2.
With reference to Fig. 1, the present invention relates to an apparatus 1 for controlling vehicle entry to and/or exit from a space 100.
The space 100 can be any space having limited entry and/or exit, for example a public or private car park, a toll zone or toll road or the like.
The apparatus according to the present invention will be described herein with particular reference to its use as apparatus for controlling entry to / exit from a parking area for motor vehicles.
It is understood that the apparatus according to the present invention can also be used in different circumstances to those indicated or described below.
According to the invention, the apparatus 1 comprises a first barrier device 10 and a second barrier device 20.
The barrier device 10 preferably comprises a first moving barrier element 12, for example a bar, and first actuator means (not shown), housed inside a first support column 14, to move the aforesaid barrier element 12.
The first actuator means are adapted to reversibly move the bar 12 between a first horizontal operating position (shown in the aforesaid figures), in which it obstructs transit in a first transit lane 11 to/from the space 100, and a second vertical operating position (not shown), in which it allows transit along the transit lane 11.
In Figs. 1-2, the transit lane 11 is a lane to exit the space 100. Naturally, it could also be a lane to enter the space 100.
Preferably, the barrier device 10 comprises a support body advantageously constituted by the first support column 14, operatively associated with the barrier element 12.
The column 14 is advantageously arranged to house therein the actuator means of the device 10, which preferably comprise an electromechanical gear motor or another type of actuator, for example of electromagnetic, hydraulic or pneumatic type, operatively associated with a kinematic chain, capable of operatively connecting the gear motor or actuator to the barrier element 12.
The barrier device 20 preferably comprises a second moving barrier element 22, for example a bar, and second actuator means, housed inside a second support column 24, to move the aforesaid barrier element 22.
The second actuator means are adapted to reversibly move the bar 22 between a first horizontal operating position (shown in the aforesaid figures), in which it obstructs transit along a second transit lane 21 to/from the space 100, and a second vertical operating position (not shown), in which it allows transit along said transit lane 21.
In Figs. 1-2, the transit lane 21 is a lane to enter the space 100. Naturally, it could also be a lane to exit the space 100.
Preferably, the barrier device 20 comprises a support body advantageously constituted by the second support column 24, operatively associated with the barrier element 22.
The column 24 is advantageously arranged to house therein the actuator means of the device 20, which preferably also comprise an electromechanical gear motor or another type of actuator operatively associated with a kinematic chain, arranged to produce the operative connection with the barrier element 22.
The first barrier device 10 comprises a first control module 13, provided with a first user interface 130, accessible to a user travelling along the second transit lane 21.
The functions and configuration of the user interface 130 can vary as a function of the use of the apparatus 1 and/or of the transit lane 21 from which the aforesaid user interface can be accessed.
For example, if the lane 21 is the entrance lane of a parking area for motor vehicles, the user interface 130 could comprise a screen for viewing information, a magnetic card reader and/or bar code reader and/or transponder reader, an opening for issuing a pre-printed ticket, a button for requesting information, a microphone/sound diffuser for interacting with an information service and so forth.

According to the invention, the first control module 13 is adapted to send first control signals 150 to the barrier device 20 to activate the second actuator means of the barrier device 20. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the second barrier device 20 is a barrier device of conventional type capable of receiving the control signals 150 sent by the control module 13.
The control module 13 of the barrier device 10 can be arranged to control operation of the second actuator means directly, activating these latter directly by sending control signals 150 (Figs. 1, 3).
Alternatively, the barrier device 20 could advantageously comprise a proper control unit (not shown), operatively associated with the actuator means of the device 20 and capable of receiving the control signals 150 and of controlling operation of the aforesaid actuator means on the basis of the control signals received. This configuration is preferable in the case in which control signals 150 of wireless type are transmitted.
In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the first barrier device 10 is capable of receiving third control signals 350 to activate the actuator means of the device 10. The control signals 350 advantageously come from detection means 40, for example a transponder, adapted to signal the presence of a user in the transit lane 11.
The transponder 40 could be constituted by a magnetic detection loop, buried in the ground of the transit lane 11, or by a photoelectric cell or other detection device of similar type, appropriately positioned in the lane 11.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the actuator means of the device 10 are activated directly by the control signals 350 sent by the transponder 40 (Figs. 1, 3).
Alternatively, the same control module 13 could be arranged to receive the control signals 350 and control operation of the actuator means of the device 10 directly, or to send, on the basis of the control signals received, further control signals for a control unit operatively associated with the aforesaid actuator means. This configuration is preferable in the case in which control signals 350 of wireless type are transmitted.
In an alternative embodiment of the present invention (not shown), a single barrier device 10 could control the operation of a plurality of barrier devices 20, arranged to receive a plurality of signals 150, to activate a plurality of actuator means simultaneously, or with differentiated timing, or only for some of the available entrance s/exits or barrier devices.
According to an embodiment of the present invention (Fig. 2), the second barrier device 20 comprises a second control module 23, provided with a second user interface 230, accessible to a user travelling along the first transit lane 11.
Similarly to what is described above, the functions and configuration of the user interface 230 can also vary according to the use of the apparatus 1 and/or of the transit lane 11 from which the user interface 230 is accessed.
The control module 23 is advantageously adapted to send second control signals 250 to the barrier device 10 to activate the first actuator means of the barrier device 10.
The control module 23 of the barrier device 20 can be arranged to control operation of the actuator means of the device 10 directly (Figs. 2, 3).
Alternatively, the barrier device 10 could comprise a further proper control unit (not shown), operatively associated with the actuator means of the device 10 so as to be able to receive the control signals 250 and control operation of the aforesaid actuator means. This configuration is also preferable in the case in which control signals 150 of wireless type are transmitted. According to a further alternative, the control module 13 of the barrier device 10 can be arranged to itself receive the control signals 250, sent by the second control module 23, and control operation of the actuator means of the device 10 on the basis of the control signals received.
According to the embodiment of Fig. 2, the control module 13 of the first barrier device 10 is in turn advantageously arranged to directly control operation of the actuator means of the device 20 (Figs. 2, 4).
Alternatively, the barrier device 20 could advantageously comprise a further control unit (not shown), operatively associated with the actuator means of the device 20 to receive the control signals 150 and consequently control operation of the aforesaid actuator means.
According to a further alternative, the control module 23 could advantageously be arranged to receive the control signals 150 and send further control signals to the actuator means of the device 20 to control operation thereof.
Transmission of the control signals 150, 250 and/or 350 can take place using a prior art method, for example by wire.
Preferably, in the embodiments described, transmission of the aforesaid control signals takes place using a communication bus, such as a bus of the type described in the Italian patent application no. MI2002A001234, capable of transmitting power (feed) signals and data and control signals between the connected devices.
This solution considerably facilitates the installer's work, significantly decreasing the set up times of the apparatus 1.
Alternatively, transmission of signals could take place, totally or partly, in wireless mode, for example by radio waves.
Preferably, the first control module 13 is operatively associated with the support column 14, advantageously at an upper portion 14A thereof (Figs. 1, 3). For this purpose, it is possible to use mechanical connection means of known type.
Similarly, according to the embodiment of Fig. 2, also the second control module 23 is operatively associated with the support column 24 at an upper portion 24A thereof (Figs. 2, 4). Also in this case, it is possible to use mechanical connection means of known type.
The barrier devices 10 and 20 are preferably operatively arranged to regulate transit in transit lanes 11 and 21 which can be travelled along according to opposite directions of transit.
As shown in Figs. 1-2, the barrier devices 10 and 20 are preferably positioned spaced apart by a distance suitably defined according to installation requirements, in a same dividing section 30 which separates the transit lanes 11 and 21.
Preferably, the control module 13 of the first barrier device 10 comprise a first wall 13 A facing the first transit lane 11 and a second wall 13B facing the second transit lane 21 (Figs. 1, 3).
The first user interface 130 of the control module 13 is advantageously produced in the second wall 13B.
Similarly, according to the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 4, the second control module 23 can advantageously comprise a first wall 23 A, facing the transit lane 21, and a second wall 23B, facing the first transit lane 11.
In this case, the user interface 230 of the control module 23 is advantageously produced in the aforesaid wall 23B.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention (not shown), the barrier devices 10 and 20 are operatively arranged to regulate transit in transit lanes 11 and 21 which can be travelled along according to the same direction of transit.
In this case, the barrier devices could advantageously be positioned on opposite sides of a same transit lane.
The apparatus according to the present invention could comprise a plurality of barrier devices similar to the barrier devices 10 and 20, arranged so as to manage the transit of vehicles in a plurality of pairs of lanes for entry to and exit from the space 100.
In practice, it has been seen how the apparatus according to the present invention allows the intended aim and objects to be achieved.
The apparatus according to the present invention is characterized by being considerably easy to install. Moreover, it is easy to integrate with control apparatus of conventional type, according to requirements.
The apparatus according to the present invention has a structure with limited overall dimensions, characterized by relatively low set up times and costs compared to apparatus of similar type available on the market.
The compact structure of the apparatus according to the present invention also allows an increase in the space available for construction of the transit lanes or for other ancillary works.
The apparatus according to the present invention is particularly simple to produce and to assemble at industrial level, at competitive costs.
