Definitions
- the object of the invention is a compression unit, a press and a method of compressing tobacco cut filler used for cigarette manufacturing.
- Tobacco cut filler may be stored and transported in boxes, where it is usually compressed so as to utilize the volume of the box to the maximum extent.
- presses with hydraulic and pneumatic drive are commonly used.
- a high degree of cut filler compression requires the use of actuators with a large working stroke.
- An alternative solution is double compression, where before the second compression additional cut filler feeding takes place, an actuator with a shorter working stroke is used.
- Such solution has the disadvantage that it extends the box filling cycle by the time needed for withdrawing a compressing element from a compression area, placing a feed conveyor in working position above a compression chamber, feeding tobacco cut filler into the compression chamber, and then withdrawing the feed conveyor and shifting the compressing element to the compression area.
- CH 388 161 A discloses a tobacco cut filler compression unit having movable compressing elements positioned in such a way that in a compression cycle they alternatively open and close charging passages connecting a tobacco cut filler feeding area with a compression area.
- the working cycle of the press should be optimised in such a way as to limit the number of preparatory movements such as shifting and withdrawing the feed conveyor.
- the object of the present application is to build a press enabling an optimisation of the working cycle of the press.
- the subject matter of the invention is a tobacco cut filler compression unit as in claim 1.
- An embodiment of the invention is characterised in that each of the movable compressing elements which, in a compression cycle, alternately open and close charging passages, makes a rotational motion between positions principally perpendicular to each other.
- the subject matter of the invention is also a press for tobacco cut filler compression provided with a compression unit according to claims 1 or 2.
- An embodiment of the press for the compression of tobacco cut filler is characterised in that the movable compressing elements are sized to cooperate with a compression chamber, and in that the axis of rotation of each movable compressing element or each compressing element itself is substantially parallel to the bottom of the compression chamber.
- the subject matter of the invention is a method of tobacco cut filler compression by means of the compression unit according to the claims 1 or 2 wherein during a compression movement of the compression unit, the charging passages connecting a compression chamber with a feeding area are closed, and during a withdrawal of the movable compressing elements of the compression unit, the charging passages are open.
- the solution according to the invention makes pressing cut filler without removing the compressing element from the space above the compression chamber possible, what distinctly shortens the working cycle of the press.

Description
- The object of the invention is a compression unit, a press and a method of compressing tobacco cut filler used for cigarette manufacturing.
- Tobacco cut filler may be stored and transported in boxes, where it is usually compressed so as to utilize the volume of the box to the maximum extent. For tobacco cut filler compression, presses with hydraulic and pneumatic drive are commonly used. A high degree of cut filler compression requires the use of actuators with a large working stroke. An alternative solution is double compression, where before the second compression additional cut filler feeding takes place, an actuator with a shorter working stroke is used. Such solution has the disadvantage that it extends the box filling cycle by the time needed for withdrawing a compressing element from a compression area, placing a feed conveyor in working position above a compression chamber, feeding tobacco cut filler into the compression chamber, and then withdrawing the feed conveyor and shifting the compressing element to the compression area.
- From the publication
US 4,572,065 a press driven by a hydraulic actuator in which the compressing element is a heavy metal plate with rectangular shape is known. The compression takes place in two stages, where the said compression takes place after feeding an additional cut filler portion by means of a feed conveyor inserted into the space just below a compressing element when a drive actuator of the compressing element takes its upper position. After the compression, a bale of tobacco or tobacco cut filler is pulled out of the compression chamber. - On the other hand, from the publication
DE 34 05 182 a solution is known in which tobacco cut filler is pressed directly in the box in which it will be stored or transported. The bottom part of a charging hopper is inserted into the box which will be removed after the compression of cut filler, and a feed conveyor is situated above the charging hopper below a compressing element. - From the publication
WO 2005/013732 a cut filler press provided with a movable charging hopper which moves down in order to enable feeding of cut filler by a feed conveyor is known. - On the other hand, the publication
US 3,782,275 has disclosed a rigid lightweight design of the compressing element of a press for forming hay bales. The compressing element consists of several elements forming a common compression surface. -
CH 388 161 A - In view of the expectation of manufacturers that the pressing process takes as shortest time as possible, the working cycle of the press should be optimised in such a way as to limit the number of preparatory movements such as shifting and withdrawing the feed conveyor.
