Abstract

An internal combustion engine (12) has a fuel system that includes a fuel valve (26). The fuel valve (26) has a housing (67) in which a fuel chamber (62) is formed. The fuel system has a fuel pump (34) that delivers fuel from a fuel tank (32) into the fuel chamber (62). The fuel system also has a delivery pump (59, 69, 79, 89) for forcing fuel into the fuel system. A reliable purging of the fuel system and good cooling of the fuel valve (26) can be achieved when the feed pump (59, 69, 79, 89) in a supply line (50, 72) to the fuel chamber (62) of the fuel valve (26) and conveying fuel into the fuel space (62), and when the fuel space (62) is connected to a relief line (58) in which a first valve (60, 73) is disposed.
