Eine Vorrichtung zur optischen Untersuchung wenigstens eines Wertdokuments (12) in einem Erfassungsbereich (38) der Vorrichtung, verfügt über eine Beleuchtungseinrichtung (36) zur Beleuchtung des Wertdokuments (12) in dem Erfassungsbereich (38), die wenigstens eine oberflächenemittierende Laserdiode (50) besitzt, eine Steuereinrichtung (42) zur Ansteuerung der Laserdiode (50), und eine Detektionseinrichtung (40) zur Erfassung von optischer Strahlung aus dem Erfassungsbereich (38).
