Description

The invention relates to a non-tempered glass panel, preferably laminated and equipped with an accessory attached to the panel through a hole thereof. The invention relates more particularly to an improvement to prevent the breakage of such a panel, especially when mounting the accessory by "spinning" the glass from the edges of the hole.

The document is particularly known US 6,463,628 which discloses a door handle for a glass panel.

In the field of glassware, there are essentially two categories: the toughened glass and untempered glass, preferably a laminated non-toughened glass where several layers of glass are contiguous with the interposition of a polymer film between two adjacent layers.

Tempered glass is very resistant and it is safe to equip a tempered glass panel with an accessory, generally metal mounted tight on both sides of the panel and passing through a hole thereof. However, tempered glass can not be shaped by a mirror without a quenching furnace. For example, a simple hole must be made before quenching. These operations make tempered glass more expensive than untempered glass (even laminated): given the equipment required for quenching, it is sometimes necessary to send the panel at the factory or at least in a remote unit equipped with an oven adapted, which lengthens the delivery times. In general, therefore, tempered glass is less available to the user than non-tempered glass.

On the contrary, untempered or laminated glass can easily be shaped.

Any mirror even summarily equipped can practice holes for mounting accessories, such as mounting studs, especially for hinges or for the installation of handles.

Ce phénomène est appelé couramment "filage".However, the mounting of such an accessory through the hole sometimes results in a rupture of the glass according to radiating slots leaving the edges of the hole, if we do not control tightness. This phenomenon is commonly called "spinning".

It has been envisaged to design accessories having a large contact area around the holes to distribute the resulting tightening forces over a larger area.

L'invention vise à atteindre cet objectif.However, for reasons of cost and aesthetic order, it is desirable that these reported accessories are the least bulky possible. The invention aims to achieve this objective.

It is the result of the analysis that non-tempered or non-tempered laminated glass has poor flexural strength and that the radiating "spinning" of the glass can be attributed from the edges of the hole to non-flexural forces. controlled by tightening the accessory, causing breakage from existing microcracks along the perimeter of the hole. In addition, this glass has excellent compressive strength (30 times higher than flexural strength).

The basic idea of the invention therefore consists in arranging the accessory so that its tight fitting engenders only compressive forces at a certain distance from the hole, preserving the edges of this hole of any tensile stress where the microcracks resulting from the drilling could constitute rupture primers responsible for the spinning phenomenon.

For this purpose, the invention relates firstly to an unhardened glass panel equipped with an accessory engaged through a hole of this panel and enclosing the two opposite faces thereof, characterized in that said accessory comprises two mounting plates clampingly joined together to compress a zone of said panel surrounding the hole and in that said mounting plates are shaped to define a closed contour contact area around said hole whose inner edge is at any point at a distance substantially at least equal to a predetermined minimum value of the edge of said hole, defining a clamping zone remote from the hole.

Thus, compressing the glass into a generally annular zone remote from the hole, completely isolates it from any stress, particularly bending. One can consider tightening the accessory without having to take excessive precautions, even by deploying a large clamping force since it only creates a compression zone in the thickness of the glass at a sufficient distance from the hole.

Advantageously, it has been determined that when, for example, the glass being monolithic and not hardened, the predetermined minimum value can be considered equal to the thickness of said panel.

In the case of a laminated glass plate, composed as is known of several layers (at least two) of non-tempered glass contiguous via a plastic film, it has been determined that said minimum value can be considered as equal to thickness of the thickest outer layer of the laminated glass panel.

Another important feature of the invention relates to the dimensioning of the accessory itself which, as stated above, should not be larger than that imposed by its function.

For this purpose, advantageously, the invention proposes in the case of a monolithic and unhardened glass panel, that the width of the clamping zone of the mounting plate, outside said closed contour is at least substantially equal to to the thickness of said panel.

In the case of a non-laminated laminated glass, it has been determined that the width of the clamping zone of a mounting plate, outside said closed contour, is at least substantially equal to the thickness of the layer on which she supports. For reasons of aesthetics, it is clear that most often the width of this clamping zone will be the same on both sides of the panel and that, therefore, this width will be chosen at least substantially equal to the thickness the thickest outer layer.

A concrete characteristic of a mounting plate defined above is that, for example, its central portion in the vicinity of a hole which must come opposite the hole of the glass panel comprises a countersink, for example of the order of mm, extending to this closed contour. In this way, it avoids any contact between said mounting plate and the glass in the vicinity of the hole made in the glass panel.

  • la figure 1 est une vue en coupe d'une porte en verre, munie de poignées, les poignées étant montées conformément au principe de l'invention ;
The invention will be better understood and other advantages thereof will appear more clearly in the light of the description which follows, given solely by way of example and with reference to the appended drawings:
  • the figure 1 is a sectional view of a glass door, provided with handles, the handles being mounted in accordance with the principle of the invention;
  • the figure 2 is a larger-scale detail view of Box II la figure 1 ; and
  • the figure 3 represents a mounting plate seen according to section III of the figure 2 .

Referring to the drawings, there is shown in section, a door 11 of untempered glass, preferably laminated, provided with two handles 13, 14 located on either side of the glass panel 16 constituting the door. Each handle 13, 14 is constituted by a vertical tube extending at a distance from said glass panel 16 being spaced from it by tubular spacers 19, 20. The tube 14 forming one of the handles, for example the handle inside, houses a conventional cylinder lock 22, associated with a locking mechanism 24, having two bolts capable of cooperating with the door frame, respectively a top bolt 23 and a bottom bolt 27. The lock system does not part of the invention.

The figure 2 illustrates better the mounting of the two spacers 20a, 20b supporting the two handles 13, 14, in the lower part. These two spacers (and the handles) can be considered as part of the "accessory" defined above.

The screw head 25 has a diameter substantially corresponding to the inside diameter of the spacer 20a and its threaded end is screwed into a portion internally tapped 29 of the spacer 20b. An inner ring 31 attached to the end of the spacer 20a forms an inner shoulder for the application of the screw head 25.

According to an important characteristic, the accessory (handle and especially spacers) also comprises two mounting plates 35, here in the form of flat ring, for example steel, preferably stainless steel. Each plate has a central hole 37 inside which the screw is slidably engaged.

In addition, an annular wedge 40 of plastic material is interposed between each plate 35 and the surface of the panel 16 around the hole 26 practiced therein. The outer diameter of the wedge is substantially equal to that of the plate and its inside diameter corresponds to the diameter of the screw.

In the example, the diameter of the hole 26 formed in the glass plate is slightly greater than the diameter of the screw. If necessary, to facilitate the assembly and especially the centering, can be inserted a sleeve, for example plastic between the cylindrical inner wall of the hole 26 formed in the glass panel and the outer surface of the screw 21. Each mounting plate comprises a countersink 44 of small depth, circular closed contour 46, centered, so as to define in the glass and outside said closed contour, an annular clamping zone 48, remote from the edge of the hole 26. Thus, both mounting plates 35 assembled together with clamping, by means of the screw 21, on either side of the glass panel 16 allow to put under compressive stress an annular zone in said panel, surrounding the hole while preserving the edges of this last of all pulling effort. The mounting plates are thus shaped to define, each, a flat contact area 51, closed contour, here annular, all around the hole and the inner edge of this contact area (said closed contour 46) is at all points at a distance substantially at least equal to a predetermined minimum value of the edge of the hole. As mentioned above, this predetermined minimum value is equal to the thickness of said panel. This means that the diameter D of the outer edge of the counterbore is at least equal to the diameter of the hole 26 increased by twice the thickness of the panel.

Par conséquent, le diamètre D est au moins égal (généralement supérieur) au diamètre du trou 26 augmenté de deux fois l'épaisseur de la couche C1.If the unhardened glass is of the laminated type, as for example represented on the figure 2 where it is distinguished that the panel consists of three layers of glass C1, C2, C3 contiguous, then said minimum value is equal to the thickness of the thickest outer layer, that is to say here the layer C1. Therefore, the diameter D is at least equal (generally greater) than the diameter of the hole 26 increased by twice the thickness of the layer C1.

In addition, it has been determined that the width d of the clamping zone of such a mounting plate 35, outside the closed contour of diameter D, is at least substantially equal to the thickness e of the panel, this in the case where said panel is monolithic.

In the case of a laminated glass panel, the width d of the contact area of such a mounting plate 35 outside said closed contour of diameter D is at least substantially equal to the thickness of the layer on which she supports. In practice, where the plates are identical, this amounts to choosing the width of the clamping zone of the mounting plate at least substantially equal to the thickness of the outermost layer C1 thickest.

Of course, the principles of the invention set out above are applicable to any other type of accessory that can be mounted on a non-tempered glass panel. The accessory is shown in the form of a handle and more particularly the mounting plates of such a handle but, for example, the accessory in question may also form a mounting stud for any other element, including a hinge.
