Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a pulp refiner and to a method for processing fibrous pulp material.
  • Such a refiner is known from W02008056978 . It comprises a drum having beating rolls positioned in the drum for defining a nip between the surface of the beating rolls and the inner surface of the drum. Energy efficiency of this refiner could be improved.
  • EP1.462.566 discloses an apparatus for processing fibrous material between two milling surfaces.
  • the speed difference between the milling surfaces should be close to zero.
  • an apparatus having a belt which runs over two rolls and which has a roller pressing on said belt. Again, the speed difference between the roller and the belt is close to zero.
  • the apparatus seems to provide a single pass process, and allows only a limited process control processing of pulp.
  • the invention aims to improve current pulp refiners.
  • a pulp refiner comprising a set of inner beating rolls supporting a closed loop of flexible belt running around the inner beating rolls and having an inner surface in contact with said inner beating rolls, an inlet discharging within said flexible belt for providing said pulp on said inner surface of the belt for processing said pulp between said inner belt surface and said inner beating rolls, and a drive for driving said flexible belt and said inner beating rolls.
  • the invention furthermore provides a method for processing fibrous pulp material using a pulp refiner comprising a set of inner beating rolls supporting a closed loop of flexible belt running around the inner beating rolls and having an inner surface in contact with said inner beating rolls, an inlet discharging within said flexible belt for providing said pulp on said inner surface of the belt for processing said pulp between said inner belt surface and said inner beating rolls, and a drive for driving said flexible belt and said inner beating rolls.
  • the refiner of the invention can be relatively light and still provides continuous processing of pulp material. It has a reduced mass in motion, and allows easy scaling. Furthermore, it allows water contents to be reduced from the pulp during milling. It also allows improved water content control.
  • the closed loop of flexible belt can be of the type used as a belt in paper making processes.
  • the belt can be of metal gauze, but can also be a felt belt.
  • the belt can be made of woven fiber material, or even of nonwoven material.
  • the flexible belt can be made of steel, like spring steel or stainless steel. Usually, this steel is less than 5 mm thick. In embodiments, it can even be less than 2 mm thick. Thus, the mass in motion is reduced. In an embodiment, it is a steel loop.
  • this tensioning device further comprises a tensioning device for tensioning said belt with respect to said beating rolls.
  • this tensioning device adjusts the distance between the inner beating rolls. It even allows setting or controlling of the milling pressure.
  • said drive comprises a belt drive.
  • the drive engages the belt and sets it in motion.
  • the inner beating rolls can be free-running rolls.
  • said drive comprises a beating roll drive.
  • one inner roll is driven. This allows a very simple construction. Alternatively, more rolls are driven, and even all the rolls may be driven. Each roll can have its own drive having a controller coordinating the drive of the inner rolls. Alternatively, one drive can drive several rolls or even all rolls. Thus allowing accurate speed control.
  • said inlet discharges on said inner surface of said flexible belt.
  • pulp can be brought on the inner surface of the belt.
  • it further comprises an outlet for processed pulp, said outlet is provided near a border of said belt opposite to the border of the inlet.
  • said inlet is provided near a border of said belt.
  • said beating rolls comprise grooved beating rolls.
  • said rolls comprise a wall provided with through holes. Grooves or holes allow draining of water to or from the pulp.
  • said belt drive and said beating roll drive are mutually adapted for keeping the speed difference between said belt and the surface of said inner beating rolls below 2 m/s for reducing slip between belt and beating rolls.
  • said belt drive and said beating roll drive are mutually adapted for substantially preventing slip between belt and beating rolls.
  • the refiner comprises a further set of outer beating rolls around the flexible belt, the outer beating rolls are positioned opposite the inner beating rolls. Thus, more pressure can be applied to the pulp.
  • each inner beating roll faces an outer beating roll.
  • the refiner comprises at least three inner beating rolls, in an embodiment comprising at least six inner rolls. Thus, it allows the belt to be held properly.
  • said belt is water permeable and can have a gauze structure.
  • the refiner further comprises a water inlet for supplying water to the pulp at the inner surface of the belt.
  • the water inlet may comprise a nozzle for spraying water jets on the pulp.
  • the water jets can also be used to make the pulp flow or displace for instance from the inlet to the outlet. A further use of these water jets is rearrangement of the fibres. Thus, new contact points are created, which improves efficiency of the refining process.
  • the invention further pertains to a pulp refiner comprising a set of inner beating rolls supporting a closed loop of steel belt running around the inner beating rolls and having an inner surface in contact with said inner beating rolls, an inlet discharging within said steel belt for providing said pulp on said inner surface of the belt for processing said pulp between said inner belt surface and said inner beating rolls, a drive for driving said flexible belt and said inner beating rolls.
  • a relatively thin steel belt may be used. This steel belt is supported by the inner beating rolls. It does not require heavy bearing or support.
  • An aspect of the invention further pertains to an apparatus comprising one or more of the characterising features described in the description and/or shown in figure 1.
  • Another aspect of the invention relates to a method comprising one or more of the characterising features described in the description and/or as shown in figure 1.
  • the invention is further elucidated in figure 1 referring to an embodiment of a refiner and a method for processing fibrous pulp material, showing a schematic side view of an embodiment of a pulp refiner.
  • Refiner 1 has a set of inner beating rolls 2. These beating rolls 2 are positioned for supporting a closed loop of flexible belt 3. The belt 3 runs around the beating rolls 2. Refiner 1 further has an inlet 5 for pulp. Here the inlet is positioned between two beating rolls 2. The inlet 5 provides pulp 4 to the inner surface of the belt 3. Refiner 1 further has an outlet 6 for processed pulp.
  • the refiner can further comprise a pulp manipulator near the inner surface of the flexible belt.
  • the pulp manipulator comprises fins positioned near the inner surface of belt 3. These fins guide the pulp from one border of the belt 3 to the opposite border. It may even be possible to guide pulp away from the border where it was deposited on belt 3 and back to that border.
  • said pulp manipulator comprises a set of water jet nozzles for providing jets of water directed to the inner surface of the belt. The water jets direct the flow of pulp. Furthermore, the water jets stir the pulp just enough to provide new contact points between the fibers. Research showed that providing new contact points each time before milling again, i.e. applying force, improves the process.
  • the beating rolls may be grooved. To that end, the beating rolls can be grooved in the way already disclosed in the earlier patent application of the current applicant. That part of the earlier application may be regarded as referenced as if fully set forth in this document.
  • the beating rolls have a wall provided with through holes. Via these through holes, an additional provision can be obtained for steering or controlling the water contents of the pulp.
  • the inner beating rolls 2 can have a beating roll drive, which is not shown in fig. 1. This drive keeps the beating rolls 3 in rotation in use.
  • the refiner can further comprise a drive for driving the belt 3 (not shown).
  • the beating roll drive and the belt drive may be coupled. In an embodiment, they are physically coupled. This can be done mechanically, for instance via a transmission, or directly. Both drives may also be coupled electronically. For instance, they can be coupled via a controller. Via the coupling of both drives, the relative speed of belt 3 and beating rolls 2 can be arranged. In fact, using measurements, for instance in-line measurements of pulp parameters, process conditions like the mutual speed can be set or controlled. Thus, it is possible to provide slip between both the inner beating rolls 2 and belt 3.
  • the belt 3 of the refiner 1 in an embodiment can comprise gauze material.
  • This gauze can comprise a layer of metal gauze.
  • the belt can comprise aramid of Kevlar or dyneema or other, similar high module, low strain fibre material.
  • the belt 3 is water permeable.
  • the belt 3 can comprise or consist of fiber material like a woven fiber belt 3.
  • said belt 3 can comprise or consist of nonwoven material.
  • the refiner 1 further comprises one or more inlets for applying water to the inner surface of the belt 3. In this way, water can be added when needed.
  • the belt 3 is made of or comprises a steel sheet belt. This can be spring steel and/or stainless steel. This steel belt can also have a closed surface. Usually, such a steel belt will be less than 5 mm thick. In particular, it will be less than 2 mm thick. A closed belt does not require recycling of water, and may prove more robust in long term use.
  • the refiner 1 further has outer rolls 7. These outer rolls 7 help to support the inner rolls 2. This allows a possibility to control the pressure on the pulp in a controllable way.
  • the belt is a transporting means for transporting the pulp from one set of rolls to the next.
  • the refiner 1 may comprise one or more shoe press or shoe presses.
  • a shoe press may be positioned outside the belt, pressing against an inner roll 2. In this way, a larger contact surface between the inner roll 2 and the belt may be provided.
  • several shoe presses are provided opposite several inner rolls 2.
  • the belt may be non-porous or may have a closed surface.
  • both the outer rolls 7 and the inner rolls 2 have a separate drive (not shown). In that way, the speed difference can be accurately controlled, and thus the intensity of processing the pulp material. In a simpler embodiment, it proved possible to drive only one inner beating roll 2.
  • the belt transferred its motion to the other inner rolls.
  • the drive is operated to minimize speed differences between the inner rolls and the belt. In fact, in an embodiment the speed difference is kept below about 2 m/s. In an embodiment, slip between the inner rolls and the belt is substantially prevented.
  • the refiner 1 further has a tensioning device (not shown) for setting the tension of the belt and the pressure of the belt on the inner beating rolls 2.
  • the tensioning device can comprise a means for setting the mutual distance between the inner beating rolls 2.
  • the tensioning device may comprise an additional inner roll which can be moved to and from a centre of the beating rolls 2.
  • one or more of the beating rolls 2 can be moved to and from the centre of the beating rolls.
  • a pressure device may be provided for steering or even controlling the pressure between the belt 2 and the inner rolls 3.
  • the pressure device may comprise pneumatic or hydraulic devices.
  • the pressure device in an embodiment forces or sets the position of the shafts of the inner rolls 3. It may even be possible to control the distance between the belt and the inner rolls using the pressure device.
  • the inner beating rolls 3 and belt 2 are set in motion, in which the inner beating rolls 3 rotate along their longitudinal axes, and the belt 3 rotates or is rotated around the inner beating rolls 2.
  • pulp for instance for making paper
  • the pulp is introduced on the inner surface of the belt 2.
  • the pulp is milled between the belt and the inner beating rolls 2, being transported from one roll to the next. During the transport, it may be moved slowly from one border of belt 3 to the opposite border. After one or more tours around the refiner 1, the pulp may leave the refiner 1 via one or more outlets, in an embodiment at the opposite border with respect to the inlet. During milling, water can be allowed to leave the pulp via the permeable belt 3.
  • water can be at least partially replenished with fresh or recycled water, allowing control of the moisture contents of the pulp.
  • the pulp is stirred or turned over in order to provide new contact points between fibers of the pulp. This proved to improve the milling efficiency.
