Definitions
- the invention relates to a circuit arrangement according to the preamble of patent claim 1 for operating a low-pressure discharge lamp and to a method for operating a low-pressure discharge lamp in such a circuit arrangement, that is to say according to the preamble of patent claim 9.
- a circuit arrangement according to the preamble of claim 1 is known from EP 0113451 A1 , of the DE 38 40 845 A1 as well as the DE 40 05 850 A1 known.
- a (DC) voltage source with two terminals, one of which is typically a ground terminal.
- the low-pressure discharge lamp is operated with alternating voltage.
- switches are provided, which are controlled by suitable means for controlling the switches so that at least one electrode of the low-pressure discharge lamp is alternately coupled to one terminal and the other terminal.
- a series resonant circuit is provided. This comprises an inductive element which is connected in series with the low-pressure discharge lamp, that is coupled with a connection to the electrode of the low-pressure discharge lamp is.
- the series resonant circuit further comprises a capacitive element, or even a plurality of such capacitive elements, wherein the at least one capacitive element is connected in series with the inductive element, parallel to the low-pressure discharge lamp.
- the DE 38 40 845 A1 describes how a gentle ignition of the lamp is made possible:
- a circuit point of the series resonant circuit is connected to a PTC thermistor, and the PTC thermistor is coupled via a diode to the first terminal of the voltage source.
- the PTC thermistor is simultaneously coupled via a second diode to the second terminal of the voltage source.
- basically one of the two diodes, preferably the diode, which is coupled to the ground terminal is sufficient. By the diodes, the voltage applied to the low-pressure discharge lamp is clamped, so there are only voltages on the low-pressure discharge lamp, which is smaller than the voltage applied to the voltage source.
- the series resonant circuit is excited, even if it is not yet in resonance. As a result, the electrodes of the low-pressure discharge lamp are preheated. At the same time, the PTC thermistor is heated. As soon as the PTC thermistor becomes high-impedance, a higher voltage can be dropped across the low-pressure discharge lamp than it is at the voltage source. The series resonant circuit oscillates in the resonance, and on the low-pressure discharge lamp drops a sufficiently high voltage for ignition, an ignition voltage from. After ignition, it falls over the low-pressure discharge lamp falling voltage again below that which is applied to the voltage source. The PTC thermistor then cools down, but no current flows through it in normal operation.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a circuit arrangement for operating a low-pressure discharge lamp, in which risks can be avoided by excessive lamp voltages during operation of a low-pressure discharge lamp without great effort.
- a resistance element is thus connected in series with the associated diode in the circuit between a terminal of the voltage source and the PTC thermistor.
- An evaluation device picks up the voltage drop across the resistance element and is coupled to the means for controlling in order to deactivate it.
- the invention is based on the finding that, when the voltage is too high across the low-pressure discharge lamp, currents flow via the PTC thermistor when using the circuit arrangement with the PTC thermistor and the at least one diode. A detection of an overvoltage on the low-pressure discharge lamp then does not have to be done on the low-pressure discharge lamp itself, but can align itself with the current flowing through the PTC thermistor.
- the circuit arrangement may comprise a full bridge, but is particularly simple if it comprises only one half-bridge, namely two switches connected in series between the terminals of the voltage source, wherein a center tap between the switches with the inductive element of the series resonant circuit and thus the an electrode of the low-pressure discharge lamp is coupled.
- a center tap between the switches with the inductive element of the series resonant circuit and thus the an electrode of the low-pressure discharge lamp is coupled.
- the node may be located between the inductive element and the at least one capacitive element, so is thus almost at the potential of one electrode of the low-pressure discharge lamp, or the circuit point is a tap in the one Element of the series resonant circuit, so either in the inductive element as a tap dividing the same in two parts, or as a tap between two parallel in series with the low-pressure discharge lamp switched capacitive elements. In the latter two alternatives, a higher voltage is allowed, which drops when preheating the low-pressure discharge lamp.
- the evaluation device can be made particularly simple if the resistance element is connected between a ground terminal of the voltage source and the PTC thermistor, because then the voltage across the resistance to ground can be measured.
- the anomaly in the lamp burning voltage is symmetrical, that is to say to the same extent in the two polarity states.
- asymmetric anomalies can occur, ie the case that in one polarity state, the lamp burning voltage is excessive, not in the other. If a voltage drops only at the resistance element, if in the other poling state, the lamp burning voltage is excessive, then the anomaly per se could not be detected.
- each resistance element is then to be followed by an evaluation device.
- the evaluation devices can operate independently of each other, namely, in each case an evaluation device on detection of an anomaly in a polarity state, a deactivation of the means for controlling, with which it is coupled causes. In further refinements even a comparison between the two evaluation devices. So could the two evaluation facilities for example, be an inferior and-gate; then the means for controlling would be deactivated only if there is an anomaly in both polarity states of the lamp burn voltage.
- circuit branch from the PTC thermistor with the diode specifically for the purpose of detecting an overvoltage on the low-pressure discharge lamp.
- this circuit branch fulfills the same purpose as in the prior art according to the DE 38 40 845 A1 and the DE 40 05 850 A1 , so a comfortable preheating possible.
- the evaluation unit must not cause deactivation during preheating.
- a timer eg, a gradually charging capacitor
- deactivation is effected by the evaluating means only when a voltage above a threshold value drops across the resistor for a predetermined period of time wherein the predetermined period of time is just chosen to be longer than a preheat time prior to ignition of the low pressure discharge lamp.
- the time duration can be chosen such that their difference to the preheating time is the maximum time duration over which an ignition voltage of the low-pressure discharge lamp should be applied. If the evaluation device is designed in such a way that it can detect the currents flowing through the PTC thermistor at the ignition voltage, then the system is switched off even after this so-called ignition burst duration, so that it is not damaged by too long contact of the ignition voltage comes.
- the inventive method for operating a low-pressure discharge lamp is based on a circuit arrangement according to the preamble of claim 1, ie according to the prior art, and is characterized in that is detected after ignition of the low-pressure discharge lamp when current flows through the PTC thermistor. If, for a predetermined period of time, the current intensity is greater than a predetermined threshold, then the low pressure discharge lamp is turned off. It is therefore sufficient to examine the branch with the PTC thermistor, in the region of the low-pressure discharge lamp otherwise no decoupling elements must be provided, via which the high voltage drop there is coupled out.
- the predetermined period of time is preferably greater than a preheating time prior to the ignition of the low-pressure discharge lamp, so that the branch with the PTC thermistor and the diode in the circuit arrangement continues to serve its purpose known in the art.
- the circuit arrangement according to the invention Fig. 1 comprises a DC voltage source, symbolized here by the smoothing capacitor C1 connected to the two terminals.
- a half-bridge is provided, that is to say a series connection of switches S1 and S2 parallel to the capacitor C1.
- a tap between the two switches S1 and S2 is coupled to an electrode of the lamp LP.
- the other electrode of the lamp LP is coupled via a capacitor C2 to ground.
- the switches S1 and S2 are now alternately switched off and on. When switching on the switch S1, a current flows to the lamp LP in a first direction, when turning off the switch S1 and turning on the switch S2, a current in the opposite direction.
- a resonant circuit is provided, namely the tap between the switches S1 and S2 is coupled to a terminal of an inductive element L1 whose other terminal is coupled to the electrode of the lamp LP.
- the inductive element L1 and the capacitor C3 together form a series resonant circuit: With a suitable choice of the elements suitable for the clock, with which the switches S1 and S2 are driven, the resonant circuit resonates, and falls on the lamp LP a particularly high voltage, which is sufficient for ignition.
- the lamp LP must first be preheated before it is ignited, so that it has a long life and works optimally in operation. It is therefore essential that the ignition voltage is not reached too fast.
- the electrode-side terminal of the inductive element L1 via a PTC thermistor PTC with two terminals of the DC voltage source, shown the capacitor C1, coupled via diodes D1 and D2.
- the diodes D1 and D2 are connected so that they clamp the lamp voltage:
- a current flows through the diode D1 and via the diode D2.
- the PTC thermistor PTO As long as the PTC thermistor PTO is low, the voltage across the lamp remains limited, there is initially no ignition. In this phase, the filaments of the lamp LP, so the electrodes are preheated. During preheating, PTC thermistor is also heated at the same time. As soon as it becomes high-impedance, the PTC thermistor PTC and D1 and D2 diodes have no significant effect on the voltage across the lamp, and the series resonant circuit with the L1 and C3 elements can resonate until the ignition voltage at the LP lamp drops and it comes to the ignition.
- the present invention addresses the problem that too high voltages can occur during operation of the lamp, namely after ignition. Now it is exploited that the PTC thermistor cools down again after a while of operation of the lamp and becomes low impedance. If the lamp burning voltage LP is too high, thus a current flows through the diodes D1 and D2. This can be detected:
- the previously described circuit arrangement of the type known per se is supplemented by a resistance element R1, in this case in series with the diode D2, ie the ground connection.
- An evaluation device A detects the voltage drop across the resistance element R1. If this voltage is too high for a predetermined period of time, the evaluation device A causes a potential V in the circuit Sch to change, so that the switch S2 is no longer actuated.
- the lamp LP is thus turned off.
- the evaluation device can also influence a further circuit for switch S1.
- the evaluation device comprises a timer, for example, a capacitor to be charged gradually and large capacity. A voltage drop across the capacitor determines a potential at the control input or gate of a transistor and thus the potential V, which ensures the functioning of the circuit Sch, by means of which the switch S2 is opened. When the voltage across the capacitor reaches a target value, the switch S2 remains permanently open so that the lamp LP is switched off.
- the capacitor in the evaluation device A, by which the switch S2 is opened, should now be selected so that the time until the lamp LP is switched off is greater than the desired preheating time. Then it does not come to shutdown during preheating.
- the timer in the evaluation device A be chosen so that after 2.5 seconds, a shutdown occurs. Upon start-up of the lamp LP, it would thus come to shutdown only if the ignition voltage after a preheating time of 2 seconds for a period of 0.5 seconds has arrived. Then a shutdown is also appropriate if the lamp LP has not yet ignited. A period of 2.5 seconds is also acceptable if surges on the LP lamp are to be avoided during later operation, because 2.5 seconds are not enough to cause excessive overheating.
- the illustrated three embodiments have in common that a resistance element R1 is provided to which an evaluation device A is assigned.
- the resistance element R1 is connected in series with the diode D2. It is possible to use the circuits according to the FIGS. 1 to 3 to the effect that even in the branch between the PTC thermistor PTC and a voltage terminal, which comprises the diode D1, a resistance element is provided, and that this resistance element is associated with an evaluation, which picks up the falling voltage across this resistor element and is equally suitable to change the voltage V of a circuit Sch to a switch S1 or S2, thereby causing a turn-off of the respective switch and its shut-down.
- a resistance element is provided to which an evaluation device A is assigned.
