Description

The invention relates to a method for individual hot stamping foil application according to the preamble of claim 1 and to security documents produced therewith according to claim 10. EP0433575 and EP0341047 disclose a procedure and a safety document from this technical field.

As a rule, these hot stamping foils consist of a carrier film, a release layer, a thermoplastic layer in which relief structures are embossed, a reflection layer and a heat-activatable adhesive layer. By means of hot stamping dies, only the film parts corresponding to the outline of the hot stamping stamp are transferred to the substrate with heat-activated adhesive during the application process. The other film parts remain on the carrier film and are removed with this from the substrate. For example, the hot stamping foil can also be applied over the entire area to the credit card if the hot stamping stamp has the form of a credit card ( DE 100 13 410 A1 ).

The holographic structures of the hot stamping foil are produced by means of a holographic embossing die by replicative stamping into the thermoplastic layer. In this way, a hot stamping foil is obtained with repeating holographic motifs, so-called standard motifs.

To increase the protection against counterfeiting of personal documents, it is increasingly required to have individual personal data also in the applied holographic optical elements, which can be compared visually with the printed personal data in the authenticity check of the document. It is known ( EP 0 896 260 A2 ) that volume hologram film overlays with holographic passport photo are used for document protection. The manufacturing and material costs for volume holograms are in comparison to Hot stamping foil with holographic relief structures, however, many times higher.

The production of individual information from foil-embossed holographic relief structures requires additional steps. In the EP 0420261 B1 different methods are shown. Thus, individual changes of the hot embossing foil structure can be carried out, for example printing of the reflection layer with individual data with subsequent adhesive coating, demetalization or change of the reflection properties of partial regions of the reflection layer, individual laser engraving of the embossed thermal lacquer layer or partial adhesive coating in the form of individual data. These additional steps significantly increase the production effort and the hologram foil carrying personal data in this way requires additional security during intermediate storage until it is applied to the document. In addition, material aging and mechanical damage, especially in the area of the adhesive layer applied in the form of individual personal data, can have a serious effect on the subsequent application quality.

In the WO 2006-048563 the use of a so-called release film is proposed, which deactivates the transferability of certain film areas of an adhesive-coated hot stamping foil. This release film is laminated, for example, on the hot stamping foil, a heated stamp is pressed onto the film stack, only at this point the adhesive is activated, so that the decorative layer in the outline of the stamp is separated from the carrier film of the hot stamping film and the release film on the subsequent removal of the release film remains. The hot lamination of the hot stamping foil changed in this way now takes place on the document. The removal of the release film can thus take place immediately before the application of the hot stamping foil on the document and thus damage to the film surface would be prevented during temporary storage. However, filigree contours such as passport photos can not be applied to the document with this method, as formed as a result of the separation of these two films from one another known film dust that can settle on the thermally activated adhesive and thus affects the subsequent bonding with the document surface.

It is known ( DE 35 11 146 A1 ) that hot stamping film can be partially applied to substrates, if previously only certain substrate areas are coated with heat-activated adhesive. The hot stamping foil itself has no adhesive coating and the application takes place only where the adhesive is on the substrate. If, for example, adhesive is applied as a strip to a security paper, a strip can be applied to the security from a hot stamping foil ( DE 102 22 433 A1 ). As an adhesive, it is also possible to use printing inks which become tacky at a higher temperature. This opens up possibilities for an individual film application, without the need for elaborate embossing stamp conversions. Thus, logos with varying information content, numbering, etc., can be applied quickly and inexpensively from the hot stamping foil to substrate surfaces. So far, it has not been possible to apply highly complicated motifs, such as passport photos, directly from diffractive hot stamping foil directly to the document. In particular, for the film application of passport photos a very high application quality is required to ensure good recognition.

True, in the EP 0 420 261 B1 described that individually passport photos can be introduced by partial demetalization of the metallized embossed layer in the form of personal data subsequently in the diffractive hot stamping foil before it is applied to the associated documents. In addition to the costly demetallization is disadvantageous that a complex data logistics is necessary to obtain a correct assignment of document and individual hot stamping foil.

In the DE 19927175 A1 It is described that the application quality of a hot embossing foil applied by means of a hot stamping die under high pressure can be improved if subsequently an adhesive tape is rolled over the substrate surface which removes non-glued foil remnants from the substrate surface, in this case wood or leather. However, in this method, the hot stamping foil is deeply embossed in the substrate and thus is no longer on the surface of the substrate so that the tape does not touch the applied film and there is no risk that it will be torn off the substrate again.

The object of the invention is therefore a method o. G. Specify genus, which in a simple, cost-effective and safe way higher quality of application of holographic hot stamping foils on personal data printed with personal documents and thus higher quality of the overall product, as well as to provide a high quality security document produced by this method.

This object is achieved by a method having the features of claim 1 and by a security document according to claim 10. Advantageous embodiments are characterized in the correspondingly dependent subclaims.

The invention will be described in more detail by means of exemplary embodiments with reference to the drawing. Show it:
Fig. 1:

Fig. 2:
the schematic structure of a device for carrying out the method in the second embodiment with color printing.

Like from the Fig. 1 can be seen, is first on a document 1, for example, a plastic card or paper page of a passport on which all printed personal data can be located, another passport photo 2 in addition to the existing information monochrome, with a resolution of at least 200 DPI, with the Thermal transfer printing process printed as inverse image. Then, a holographic non-adhesive hot stamping film 3 without adhesive coating consisting of a carrier film 4, a release layer 5, the holographic embossed thermal layer with a deposited reflection layer, here called decorative layer 6, with a Rollenheißlaminationsgerät at a temperature of 110 - 150 ° C with the reflection layer side on the printed document 1 laminated and the carrier 4 withdrawn from the hot stamping foil. The decorative layer 6 of Hot embossing film 3 remains as a coherent layer where the printed passport photo 2 is located. The face can not be recognized because there are also film residues 7 between the printed pixels in the facial area. Both the optimizations of the application temperature and the use of films with different detachment behavior did not lead to a sufficient improvement of the film-applied detail quality. Thus, films with a lower Wax content in the release layer 5 between carrier film and embossing layer were tested, which require release forces of> 12 N for application, with the result that the printed ink does not sufficiently bind the decorative layer 6 and thus the film transfer to the printed surface areas could not take place.

Films with a high proportion of wax release in the release layer can already be applied at lower temperatures and with a lower peel force <10 N / cm. But it is also achieved with this type of film no detailed application within the passport picture. In this type of film, the metallic decorative layer 6 remains within the passport area as a coherent unstructured surface.

Since the adhesive properties of the printing inks also have a great influence on the application quality of the hot stamping foils, the printing inks and toners used were varied. Suitable colors had to be found for printing on the document, which develop a sufficiently high bond strength during the hot stamping film application at temperatures between 110 ° and 150 ° C after the printing process, but still remain dimensionally stable on the document surface. Toner 8, preferably those printed on the document by the laser printing or laser transfer printing process, showed the best hot foil application results. For example, fonts and numbers with font sizes> 2 mm could be applied well. But even with these it was not possible to get an acceptable slide application as a passport photo.

This application quality problem has been solved according to the invention in that after the heat lamination of the film 3 and the removal of the carrier layer 4, a further process step is introduced by applying an adhesive film 9 with adhesive forces <10 N / cm, preferably <5 N / cm, is rolled over the photo and thereby all those film residues 7 are removed from the document surface, under which there are no printed toner pixels ( Fig. 1 ). In this way you get an absolutely clean film application 3 ', which reproduces the passport photo in very good quality. When using adhesive films with greater adhesive force, however, the adhesive on the toner pixels film parts are carried away again. It is particularly advantageous to print the inverse passport photograph with transparent toners, as well as transparent diffractive hot stamping foil with a high refractive transparent coating, e.g. As titanium oxide, instead of the usual metallic coating to use. In this way, no other document data is obscured.

To increase the adjustability is proposed to first print a rectangular area in the size of the passport photo, to which a hot stamping foil with a diffractive, preferably a "zero order" grid is applied, then to print the photo and another diffractive film with a different grid frequency or other reconstruction angle. The result is an applied diffractive passport photo in which all areas are diffractive, which makes an unauthorized adjustment, for example by printing a photo on an applied diffractive surface impossible.

To further enhance anti-counterfeiting security, the homogenous diffractive grating of the hot stamping foil may contain additional security features difficult to emulate, such as hidden laser-light-verifiable or lenticular information, blazed grids, and other machine-readable information.

The homogeneous diffractive grating of the hot stamping foil 3 can, as already mentioned, also be a diffractive "zero order" lattice which does not have the rainbow effect typical of surface hologram gratings but a defined color change when the viewing angle changes, similar to the optically variable inks (OVI) , Diffractive zero order gratings are much more difficult to readjust than conventional diffractive gratings with rainbow effect, and further increase anti-counterfeiting security when present in subregions of the diffractive passport photo.

After document application, the document surface is sealed with a scratch-resistant protective layer to increase durability.

Compared with the individualized volume hologram film overlay method, the method according to the invention represents a cost-effective alternative that is equivalent in terms of its qualitative passport reproduction. Since the production of the individual diffractive data takes place directly on the document, a complex data comparison of the document and individualized hot stamping foil before application is not necessary.
