Soweit eine Verformung an einem Rohrstück vorgenommen werden soll, so bietet sich im Stand der Technik bislang lediglich die Möglichkeit an, ein vergütetes Rohr mit einer so genannten Bearbeitungstrommel zu bearbeiten, mit der es auch bisher möglich ist, eine Verformung eines auch vergüteten Metallrohrs vorzunehmen. Hierbei besteht der Nachteil darin, dass zu einem Zeitpunkt jeweils lediglich ein einziges Werkstück mit der Bearbeitungstrommel bearbeitet werden kann. Erfindungsgemäß ist vorgesehen, dass die Metallrohre im Wege der Kaltumformung in eine lineare Umformungseinheit eingespannt werden, also rotierbar um eine Drehachse gelagert werden, welche zwischen zwei Walzschlitten angeordnet ist. Im Zuge eines Walzvorgangs werden sich die beiden Walzschlitten gegenparallel aufeinander zu bewegen, sich gegenseitig auf diesem Wege überstreichen und bis zu einem Anschlag weiterfahren, derart, dass sich das Werkstück zu jedem Zeitpunkt zwischen den beiden Walzschlitten befindet. Auf wenigstens einem der Walzschlitten ist dabei eine Walzleiste mit einer Profilierung angeordnet, deren Kaliber sich während des Walzvorganges in das Werkstück eindrückt und hierbei die Umformung vornimmt. Ein derartiges Verfahren kann auch und insbesondere mit hochvergüteten Stahlrohren, insbesondere mit so genannten "Tenaris"-Rohren, durchgeführt werden, so dass eine nachfolgend durchgeführte Vergütung der so entstehenden Endprodukte nicht mehr erforderlich ist.
