Definitions
- the invention relates to a winch suitable for a boat, in particular a sailing boat.
- the invention also relates to an assembly of such a winch with a storage drum.
- Winches for sailing boats are e.g. marketed by Lewmar® and Harken®.
- An example of a winch is described in EP-A-0 106 422 or EP-A-0 887 302 .
- the known winches normally have a winch drum and a foot which are coaxially arranged around a main shaft.
- the main shaft can be driven by a winch handle which is detachably connectable to the main shaft adjacent a free end of the winch drum.
- the drum rotates.
- gearing is present between the main shaft and the drum.
- the foot is fixedly mounted on e.g. the deck or the mast of a boat. Normally, the drum can rotate relative to the foot in a first direction and is blocked for rotation in the opposite direction.
- the drum also rotates.
- a rope connected to e.g. a sail can be winched in.
- the object of the invention is to provide a winch which can be fully automatically operated, i.e. both for winching in and veering out a rope, which provides a full manual backup and which, from an esthetical point of view, is as attractive as the known winches.
- the invention provides winch suitable for a boat, in particular a sailing boat.
- the winch has a winch drum and a foot.
- the winch drum is rotateable relative to the foot in a first direction and blocked for rotation in the opposite direction.
- the drum is manually driveable for rotation relative to the foot with a winch handle which is detachably connectable to the winch adjacent a free end of the winch drum.
- the foot of the winch is mounted on a base which base is driveable for rotation relative to the boat in two directions by means of a motor.
- the base When no energy is present for driving the motor, or when the motor is broken, the base will be fixed, or at least can be fixed relative to the boat. Under those circumstances the winch will act as a standard manually operable winch. In other words, a full manual backup is provided.
- the motor for driving the rotation of the base i.e. the winch motor can be an electric motor or a hydraulic motor.
- the invention provides an assembly of a winch according to the invention and a rope storage drum.
- the rope storage drum is rotatably drivable by a storage drum motor.
- the rope storage drum serves for storing the tail of the rope.
- the storage drum can be positioned below the deck of the boat.
- the storage drum motor can be an electric or a hydraulic motor.
- the storage drum motor can be a spring motor, which exerts a torque on the storage drum so that a rope part extending between the winch drum and the storage drum is always kept under slight tension.
- Such a variant has the advantage that no electrical or hydraulic energy is consumed for driving the storage drum.
- the storage drum is rotateably drivable by a electric or hydraulic storage drum motor, wherein between the electric or hydraulic storage drum motor on the one hand and the storage drum on the other hand a spring motor is mounted so that that a rope part extending between the winch drum and the storage drum is always kept under slight tension.
- Such a variant has the advantage that a big length of rope can be stored on the storage drum while also the tension in the tail end of the rope is determined by the spring motor. Consequently, the tension can be kept rather constant.
- the spring motor can be of the type marketed under the registered trademark Neg'ator and shown in US-3,251,627 for retracting a seat belt.
- the invention also provides an assembly of a winch according to the invention and a rope, wherein the rope is closed in itself so that a rope part of the rope at a low tension side of the winch is connected with a rope part of the rope at a high tension side of the winch, wherein the assembly includes a tensioning device for providing a pre-tension in the rope part at the low tension side of the winch.
- the tensioning device can e.g. be a turning pulley which is connected to the mast or the hull of a ship via a tensioning spring.
- the tensioning spring can be a helical spring or a pneumatic spring.
- the winch is mounted on a base 11. From a top view, the base is circular.
- the base 11 is driveable for rotation about the axis L which is coaxial with the axis of the main shaft 6.
- a motor 12 is provided which is connected with the boat, in this example with the deck 13 of the boat.
- a winch motor shaft 20 is provided with a crown gear wheel 21.
- a base shaft 23, which is connected to the base 11 is also provided with a crown gear 22 which cooperates with the crown gear wheel 21. It is clear that also other drive connections between the motor 12 and the base 11 are feasible.
- the winch motor 12 can rotate the base 11 in two opposite directions. Consequently, the rope 14 can be winched in and veered out by the motor 12.
- the winch motor can be an electric or a hydraulic motor.
- the base 11 When the motor is broke, or no power is available, the base 11 will not rotate and the winch 1 can be operated manually with the winch handle as a standard manually operated winch.
- winch 1 can also be connected to another part of the boat, e.g. a mast.
- Fig. 1 also shows a rope storage drum 15.
- the rope storage drum can be position on the deck 13 or below the deck 13 or on any suitable place on or in the boat.
- the tail 14a of the rope 14 is only partly shown and is guided to the rope storage drum 15 via well-known rope guide means.
- the rope storage drum 15 is in the present example driven by a spring motor 16.
- a spring motor is e.g. marketed under the trademark Neg'ator®.
- the constant spring motor shown has a leaf spring 17 which is wound around and connected to a first shaft 18 which is driveably connected to the shaft of the storage drum 15. Another end of the leaf spring 17 can be wound around a second shaft 19 when the storage drum 15 is rotated.
- the spring is a partly unwinded from the first shaft 18 to the second shaft 19 a slight constant torque is exerted on the first shaft 18 tending to rotate the storage drum 15 so as to wind up the tail end 14a of the rope 14 on the rope storage drum 15.
- a spring motor 16 In stead of a spring motor 16 also an electric motor or a hydraulic motor can be used to drive the rope storage drum 15. Also a combination of a spring motor 16 with a electric or hydraulic motor is possible.
- the embodiment provides a fully automated winching in and veering out of a rope. Further, when no power is available or the winch motor is broke, a fully functional manual backup is available. Further, the costs of the system are very reasonable. Finally, the aesthetic appearance of the winch is as beautiful as a standard winch.
- Fig. 2 shows a schematic perspective view of an assembly as shown in Fig. 1 .
- a relative low tension is present in the rope part 14a between the winch drum 2 and the storage drum 15 .
- the amplification of the tension in the rope is dependent on the number of loops with which the rope is wound around the winch drum 2.
- Fig. 3 shows a schematic perspective view of an assembly of a winch including a winch drum 2 and a rope 25.
- the rope 25 is closed in itself, i.e. endless, so that a rope part 25a of the rope 25 at a low tension side of the winch drum 2 is connected with a rope part 25b of the rope 25 at a high tension side of the winch drum 2.
- the assembly includes a tensioning device 26 for providing a pre-tension in the rope part 25a at the low tension side of the winch drum 2.
- the tensioning device 26 includes a turning pulley 27 which is connected to the mast or the hull of a ship via a tensioning spring 28.
- the tension spring 28 can be any type of spring, e.g.
- the tensioning device can also be a storage drum of the type described above with a motor, such as a hydraulic, a electric or a spring motor.
- the rope part 25b at the high tension side of the winch drum 2 is connected to a load, e.g. a sail 29 to be adjusted with the rope 24. Because the winch drum 2 can be driven in two opposite directions, the assembly with the endless rope 25 is feasible.
