Description

The invention relates to an adapter for coupling two different electrical connectors.

Among the known adapters include, for example, a USB-A inline connection, in which two USB sockets type A are soldered side by side on a printed circuit board. There is also already known an adapter with a type A USB socket and a type B USB socket, in which the two sockets are likewise arranged again on a printed circuit board.

The "Universal Serial Bus" (USB) is a 4-pin, standardized I / O bus that serves, among other things, as a serial interface for computer ports. For such a USB bus, different plugs are provided, which includes in particular a wider type A connector and a smaller, approximately square type B connector.

The known adapters are, inter alia, associated with the disadvantage that they require a printed circuit board and are relatively complex in terms of both their structure and in terms of their installation.

In the US-A-2006/0141865 there is described a plastic connector USB connector, which is configured at a first end to selectively serve as either a USB plug or a USB socket, and is provided at its second end with an adapter for various specifications. In this case, an electrical connection circuit board is provided to form the variable connection at the first connector end, which is arranged with one end in the plastic housing 102 and the other end protrudes from this and is surrounded to form the USB socket of one end of a metal sleeve, the other end again is arranged in the plastic housing. To convert the first connector end into a USB plug, the metal sleeve is at least partially pivotable away from the outwardly projecting free end of the electrical connection board, for which purpose it is made in two parts, or inwardly retractable into the plastic housing.

The invention has for its object to provide an improved adapter of the type mentioned, in which the aforementioned problems are eliminated.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by an adapter for coupling two different electrical connectors, in particular for vehicles, with an electrically conductive, open at two ends cage, in particular pin-like, insertable into the cage electrical contacts with different, adapted to the respective connector contact ends and in particular two insertable into the cage different, adapted to the respective connector insulating parts for fixing the electrical contacts, wherein the cage, the electrical contacts and the insulating parts supporting these are designed so that in the region of the two open ends of the cage different, to the respective Plug customized socket-like plug receptacles arise.

Due to this design a simple and easy to handle adapter is created. The previously required printed circuit board is eliminated. The number of parts and the assembly costs are reduced to a minimum. In addition, due to the electrically conductive cage results in an optimal EMC protection.

In the region of one of the two open ends of the electrically conductive cage, a plug receptacle for a USB plug is preferably formed.

In this case, according to a preferred practical embodiment of the adapter according to the invention in the region of one of the two open ends of the electrically conductive cage, a plug receptacle for a USB plug of type A is formed.

It is particularly advantageous if in the region of one of the two open ends of the electrically conductive cage, a plug receptacle for a plug of a data transmission system, in particular high-speed data transmission system is formed.

A preferred practical embodiment of the adapter according to the invention is characterized in that in the region of one of the two open ends of the electrically conductive cage a connector receptacle for a USB connector and in the region of the other open end of the cage a connector receptacle for a connector of a data transmission system, in particular high speed Data transmission system is formed.

The plug receptacle for the USB plug is preferably designed again as a plug receptacle for a type A USB plug.

A respective electrical contact can therefore be designed in particular as a USB spring at one end and as a pin at the other end, for example as a 0.64 mm pin.

The electrically conductive cage is preferably made in one piece.

It is particularly advantageous if this electrical cage is at least substantially closed except for the two open ends. This ensures continuous EMC protection.

Conveniently, the electrically conductive cage is formed by a sheet metal cage.

Die Isolierteile können insbesondere aus Kunststoff bestehen. The insulating parts may in particular consist of plastic.

It is particularly advantageous if several electrical contacts are combined in a pin header, whereby the assembly cost is further reduced.

It is also particularly advantageous if the electrical contacts each have a cross-section which is at least substantially constant over their length, as a result of which, inter alia, an optimal data flow is ensured.

The two open ends of the electrically conductive cage may be provided on opposite sides of the cage or be offset relative to each other, for example, by 90 °, in the latter case, the electrical contacts are angled accordingly.

Preferably, the adapter is provided with an outer housing. This outer housing may in particular consist of plastic. Thus, the adapter can be used in combination, in particular with different plastic outer housings at different locations, for example in a vehicle.

  • two plastic parts for fixing electrical contacts, for example in the form of a pin header
  • double-sided pins or electrical contacts that correspond on the one hand, for example, the USB-A standard and on the other hand are compatible in particular to a high-quality vehicle data connector.

Among other things, the following advantages are achieved with the adapter according to the invention:
  • Elimination of the printed circuit board and complex assembly processes
  • optimal EMC protection
  • optimal data flow due to constant cross sections of the electrical contacts
  • Possible USB pitch adjustment (2.5 mm & 2 mm), for example to the standard 2.54 mm, for example by special contact subsystem (MTS-ST) in the plug
  • Partial reduction for this system.

As already mentioned, the adapter can be used in combination with various plastic outer housings at different locations, for example in a vehicle. It is also a variant with 90 ° offset open cage ends and corresponding angled contact pins, such as 0.64 mm pins, possible.

FIG. 1 shows a schematic exploded view of an exemplary embodiment of an adapter 10 according to the invention for coupling two different electrical connectors, which may be, for example, a USB connector, in particular of type A and an "Automotive High Speed" data connector. The adapter 10 can be used in particular in vehicles.

The adapter 10 comprises an electrically conductive, open at two ends cage 12, in particular pin-like, insertable into the cage 12 electrical contacts 14 with different, adapted to the respective connector contact ends and two usable in the cage 12 different, adapted to the respective connector insulating parts 16, 18 for fixing the electrical contacts 14.

The cage 12, the electrical contacts 14 and the insulating parts 16, 18 supporting them are designed so that in the region of the two open ends of the cage 12 there are different socket-like plug receptacles adapted to the respective plug.

In this case, for example, in the region of one of the two open ends of the electrically conductive cage 12, a connector receptacle 20 for a USB connector, in particular a USB connector type A, and in the region of the other open end of the cage 12, a female connector receptacle for a plug Data transmission system, in particular high-speed data transmission system ("Automotive High Speed Data") formed.

FIG. 2 shows a schematic representation of the assembled adapter 10 according to FIG. 1 in two different perspective views. It is in the FIG. 2a ) to detect the open end of the cage 12, in the region of the plug receptacle 22 is formed for a connector of the data transmission system, in particular high-speed data transmission system. In contrast, in the FIG. 2b ) to detect the open end of the cage 12, in the area of the connector receptacle 20 for the USB connector, in particular USB connector type A, is formed. In this case, the insulating part 16 is arranged in the region of the formed socket-like plug receptacle for the USB plug and the insulating part 18 in the region of the formed plug receptacle 22 for the data transmission system.

FIG. 3 shows a schematic perspective view of an electrical contact 14 of the adapter 10th

In this case, in the present embodiment, the electrical contact 14 at one end 14 'as a USB spring and at the other end as a pin, for example, as a 0.64 mm pin.

The electrically conductive cage 12 is made in one piece. It is at least substantially closed except for the two open ends. In the present embodiment, it is formed by a sheet metal cage.

The two insulating parts 16, 18 may consist in particular of plastic.

In principle, it is also conceivable to provide only one insulating part or more than two insulating parts.

As in particular on the basis of FIG. 1 can be seen, several electrical contacts 14 may be summarized in a pin header.

The electrical contacts 14 may each have a cross section which is at least substantially constant over their length.

In the present embodiment, the two open ends of the electrically conductive cage 12 and correspondingly the two female plug receptacles 20, 22 are provided on opposite cage sides. However, it is also conceivable, for example, such a design in which the two open ends of the electrically conductive cage 12 offset relative to each other by 90 ° and the electrical contacts 14, are bent at 90 ° accordingly.

The adapter 10 may be provided with an outer housing, in particular made of plastic.

This results in a two-socket adapter 10, in particular for coupling a USB A plug with an "Automotive High Speed" data connector with the following features:
  • Sheet metal cage for continuous EMC protection
  • two plastic parts for fixing electrical contacts, for example in the form of a pin header
  • Double-sided pens that conform to one side of the USB-A standard and on the other hand are compatible with a high quality vehicle data connector.

The previously required printed circuit board is eliminated. The assembly is simplified overall. This results in optimum EMC protection. Because of the preferred Constant cross sections of the electrical contacts ensure an optimal data flow. It is conceivable, for example, a USB gauge size adjustment (2.5 mm & 2 mm) on the standard 2.54 mm, for example, by a special contact subsystem ("MTS-ST") in the plug. The number of system parts is reduced to a minimum.

The adapter 10 can be used in different locations, for example in a vehicle, in combination with various outer housings, in particular made of plastic.
