  • a preferred embodiment of the fire damper blade according to the invention is characterized in that the refractory material is a flexible band of silica fiber.
  • the refractory material is in the shape of a hollow-core sleeving having the intumescent seal material adapted to fill the core or, alternatively, in the shape of a dual-layer band, whereby the intumescent seal material is placed between the layers.
  • a still another preferred embodiment of the fire damper blade according to the invention is characterized in that the refractory material is at least partially affixed to the perimeter of the damper blade.
  • the features of the invention include that the refractory material enclosing the intumescent seal material prevents the latter from disintegrating and keeps it in place under fire. Hence, the intumescent material gives an extended protective life compared with prior-art embodiments.
  • One additional benefit is that need of the expensive intumescent material is minimized.

The function of this seal is to seal the blade 5 tightly against the inner surface of the duct sleeve element 2 under normal circumstances when the damper blade is in its closed position.

  • the intumescent seal material 7 begins to swell thus closing the gap between the inner surface of the air duct sleeve element and the blade even before the conventional moderate temperature seal 6 has disintegrated under heat.
  • the fire damper stays leakproof under all circumstances.
  • the basic concept of the present invention relates to the protection of the intumescent seal by means of a refractory material 8 substantially over the entire perimeter of the damper blade 5 thus substantially increasing the time over which the intumescent seal stays in place and extending the leakproofness of the blade under high temperature and pressure.
  • the refractory material 8 can be a silica fiber band, for instance.
  • the refractory material element may have the shape of, for instance, a band as shown in the diagrams or a hollow-core braid, whereby the intumescent seal 7 is placed in the hollow core.
  • the refractory silica fiber band 8 may have a double-layer structure, whereby the layers are adapted to cover both sides of the intumescent seal.
  • the band 8 is at least partially attached to the damper blade. As is evident from the diagrams, in the above-discussed embodiments the band 8 is secured by its "lower" edge about the perimeter of the damper blade.
  • the intumescent seal and the refractory material protecting the same are mounted on the inner wall of the air duct sleeve element, where they can sealingly expand against the blade under a fire situation.
