Description

Domaine techniqueTechnical area

The present invention relates to a wheelchair with double handrail.

Etat de la technique et problèmes à résoudreState of the art and problems to be solved

Wheelchairs are known whose driving wheels are associated with handrails allowing the person occupying the wheelchair to control the movement of the latter by manually actuating one or other of the driving wheels. When each drive wheel is connected to a handrail, it is possible to turn the wheelchair in place by operating one of the wheels in one direction and the other in the other. For disabled persons with only one valid hand, wheelchairs have already been made with two handrails on the same side of the wheelchair, each connected to one of the drive wheels. These two handrails are located on the same side of the chair and have a fixed position in space relative to each other. In this case, the side of the opposite wheel generally has no handrail.

An example of such a wheelchair has been illustrated in particular in the patent application. GB-A-2,359,529 which discloses the technical features of the preamble of claim 1.

Different positions of these handrails relative to each other have been proposed. The most common is to position the smaller of the two handrails outside the volume defined by the larger one. Another position is to position the smaller of the two handrails in the volume defined by the larger one. Between these two extreme positions, various relative positions of the two handrails were proposed according to the types of armchairs. However, in all cases, the position of the two handrails relative to each other is always fixed.

It has been found that there is then a problem with regard to the relative positions of the outer rings of the two handrails. If these rings are relatively distant from each other, the total size of the armchair width is increased, which may be a disadvantage in view of certain doorways, while if the two rings are in the same plane perpendicular to the axis of the wheels, or almost in the same plane, their diameters being different, it can result in difficulties of grip for the disabled person occupying the chair and having only a valid hand.

The object of the present invention is to provide a dual handrail wheelchair arrangement which provides a solution to these problems without requiring individual manufacture of cases in case, and allows series productions with standardized parts.

Description détaillée des modes de réalisation préférés de l'inventionDetailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments of the Invention

The Fig. 1 shows the general appearance of a wheelchair according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention. This wheelchair has two drive wheels 1 and 2 mounted coaxially on a drive shaft 3 and disposed on either side of a frame 4 on which a seat with armrests 5 and a backrest 6 are arranged. The wheels 1 and 2 are rear wheels ensuring the drive of the wheelchair while two small steering wheels 7, of which only the left wheel is visible at the Fig. 1 , support chassis 4 at the front. The wheels 1 and 2 are manually controlled by the occupant of the wheelchair while the steering wheels 7 react automatically to the pulses coming from the wheels 1 and 2.

According to an important feature of the invention, a large handrail 8 and a small handrail 9 are mounted coaxially with the shaft 3 and the wheels 1 and 2 on the right side of the chair so as to allow the occupant to order the chair with his right hand only.

To the Fig. 2 , we see the principle of construction of the frame 4 with the shaft 3, the driving wheels 1 and 2 and the handrails 8 and 9. The frame 4 comprises two rigid rectangular frames 10 and 11 maintained parallel to each other and in vertical positions, the front uprights of these frames serving as pivoting means for bars with vertical axes which are fixed wheel forklift 7. The rear uprights of the frames 10 and 11 are equipped with housings 12 and 13 supporting pads of bearings 14 and 15 in which passes the shaft 3, itself composed of several elements as will be seen later. The housings 12 and 13 are designed so that the pads 14 and 15 can be placed at different heights so that the same type of chair can be adapted to occupants of different sizes. All these elements are also represented in the exploded view of the Fig. 3 where we see the composite assembly of the shaft 3. This assembly of different elements plays an important role in achieving the purpose of the invention in collaboration with the arrangement of the small handrail 9.

4, 5 et 6.The wheel 2 comprises a hub 16 whose bore is force-fitted on an outer part of a first element 17 of the shaft 3. This element is a fast disassembly shaft that can be secured in its pivoting position by a nut. 18. The axes of rapid disassembly are known per se; it is therefore not necessary to describe here in detail the element 17. It has after the portion fitted in the hub 16 of the wheel 2 a smooth bearing provided with a lining, engaged in the bearing 15 of the housing 13 and ends with a hexagonal male-shaped bearing, itself engaged freely in a hexagonal female inlet of a first section of a telescopic crossmember 19 comprising two sections engaged one inside the other and connected in rotation while being capable of move longitudinally to allow adjustments to the length of the crossbar. Finally, a last element 20 of the shaft 3 is a second axis with rapid disassembly provided with an adjusting nut 21. Its inner end has a hexagonal male shape coupled to the female end of the second section of the cross member 19, 11 then presents a lining engaged in the bearing 14 of the housing 12 and a support bearing two ball bearings of a bearing 22 forming the hub of the wheel 1. At its outer end, the rapid disassembly axis 20 finally has a hexagonal shape male forcibly engaged in a hexagonal female part of a flange 23 having the shape of a bowl with a flat circular flange. This flange holds and holds in place the small handrail 9. Its integrated presence in the assembly of the shaft 3 makes it very easy to change the orientation of the small handrail 9, as will be seen by considering the exposed structures to the Fig. 4 , 5 and 6 .

With regard to these figures, the main provisions having already been mentioned, it will suffice to note some important details of the elements represented. Thus, the wheels 1 and 2 comprise metal rims 24 on which are mounted partially filled pneumatic tires 25. The rims of the two wheels carry bars 26 allowing optionally to attach to one or the other wheels of the transverse bars such bars 27 of the wheel 1. These bars connect to the driving wheel 1 the large handrail 8 consists simply of a circular outer ring 34 provided with an inner flange from which the bars 27. Wheels 1 and 2 are connected to the hubs 16 for the wheel 2, and 22 for the wheel 1, by spokes of metal or plastic hung from the eyelets 28. The frames 10 and 11 of the structure 4 of the frame are formed of tubes metal whose upper horizontal elements are equipped with linings 29 fixed on the sidewall and integral with the frames 10 and 11 of the structure 4. It is seen how the bearing pads 14 and 15 are supported by the bo 12 and 13 which, fixed to the frames 10 and 11, allow to place these pads at different heights. The horizontal links between the frames 10 and 11 are not shown. We know that they can be of different types. The bearings 14 and 15 form smooth bearings freely engaged on cylindrical bearings of the axis segments 17 and 20, while the pivoting of the wheels 1 and 2 is ensured on one side by force-fitting the disassembly axis segment. 17 in the bearing 16 and the other by engagement of the segment 20 in the bearings of the bearing 22 of the wheel 1.

Finally, it remains to describe the possibility of modifying the position of the outer ring of the small handrail 9, considering the Fig. 5 and 6 . The small handrail 9 consists of an outer ring 30 in the form of a rigid circle, radial arms 31 for example three in number, and a central plate 32 having the shape of a disc with a central opening adjusted the outer diameter of the bowl-shaped portion of the flange 23. The elements 30, 31, 32 are rigidly assembled, for example by welding, and show ( Fig. 5 ) that the radial arms 31 are slightly inclined relative to the parallel planes defined by the outer ring 30 and the plate 32. The plate 32 is engaged on the flange 23 inside its peripheral flange and fixed by three bolts 33 with braking nuts 33 '. The dimensions are such that the outer ring 30 of reduced diameter relative to the ring 34 of the large handrail 8 is offset axially inwards, which reduces the size of the armchair in width relative to the arrangement reversed ( Fig. 6 ) obtained as already indicated by reversing the small handrail 9 while maintaining its central plate on the inner side of the flange of the peripheral flange 23. The provision of the Fig. 6 thus obtained facilitates the occupant of the chair reciprocal access by the same hand to one or other of the outer rings 30 or 34 of the small or large handrail. To go from one arrangement to another, it suffices to disengage the assembly formed by the small handrail 9, the flange 23 and the segment of axis 20, then to separate the handrail from the flange by unscrewing the bolts 33. The reassembly in the inverted position of the handrail is equally fast thanks to the properties of the quick disassembly axis. In a preferred embodiment of the chair according to the invention, it was found that an axial offset of the order of 10 mm between the outer ring 30 and the plate 32 could meet the needs.

The arrangement described with reference to the drawings has a large number of advantages from the point of view of the robustness of the constituents, the ease of assembly and disassembly, the rationalization of the productions, the reliability of the products. However, other provisions also providing opportunities to change the access to the handrails by the same hand for some disabled are possible without departing from the scope of the invention. Thus, as shown by way of example to Fig. 7A to 7D and 8A to 8D , we can place a spacer 35 exchangeable and / or displaceable between the central plate 32 of the small handrail and the fastening flange of the flange 23 ( Fig. 8B and 8D ) or behind the central plate 32, between the central plate 32 of the small handrail and the nuts 33 '( Fig. 8A and 8C ). It is thus possible to obtain four adjustment positions A1, A2, A3 and A4 by combining the turning adjustment of the small handrail and the interposition of the spacer 35, thus making it possible to adapt the ease of access to the handrails.

The mounting of the central plate of the small handrail on the connecting flange to the drive shaft could also be different from what is shown in the drawings.

It can also be envisaged that the small handrail is fixed and that it is the large handrail that is adjustable. In the same way, we can consider having both adjustable handrails.

Of course, the handrails described above can be made at the choice of the manufacturer on the right side or on the left side of the chair.
