Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to lock assemblies and particularly to a lock assembly with an extended bolt throw mechanism.
- a lock acts to secure two items, for example, a door and a frame, together.
- One factor that determines the strength of a lock is the depth to which a bolt of a lock is driven into the surrounding structure when in a locking position, for example, a door frame.
- the projection of the bolt from its casing when in a locked position is commonly referred to as the "throw" of the bolt.
- a conventional lock assembly comprising a casing, a bolt member and a lock mechanism
- inserting and turning an appropriate key within the lock mechanism rotates a cam so that it engages with, and effects movement of, the bolt member.
- the throw of the bolt is determined by the radius of the cam and the proportion of its path during which it is engaged with the bolt member.
- the radius of the cam is limited by the size of the cylinder, which itself is limited in size by the proposed use for the lock.
- the present invention seeks to provide an improved lock assembly in which the throw of the bolt is increased compared to the throw of a conventional lock assembly, as is described in detail further hereinbelow.
- the present invention provides a lock assembly comprising a casing, a bolt member having a bolt portion and a lath portion, a connecting member movably coupled to the lath portion of the bolt member, and an actuating member which is engageable with the comiecting member and is effective to move the bolt member along a path between a first unlocked position in which the bolt portion of the bolt member is substantially contained within the casing and a second locking position in which the bolt portion of the bolt member extends from the casing, and wherein movement of the actuating member effects movement of the connecting member and movement of the bolt member relative to the connecting member.
- Such an arrangement allows the movement of an actuating member of a given size, housed within a casing of a given size, to effect greater movement of the bolt member than in an arrangement without such a connecting member, thereby allowing the throw of the lock arrangement to be increased without increasing the size of the casing.
- the presence of the connecting member may act to amplify the movement of the bolt member beyond that of the actuating member.
- the bolt portion of the bolt member is substantially rectangular but the bolt portion may, for example, be chamfered.
- the connecting member takes the form of a plate arranged to lie adjacent to the lath portion of the bolt member.
- the lath portion may advantageously include a recessed portion to receive the connecting member.
- the connecting member is slidably coupled to the lath portion of the bolt member.
- the connecting member is preferably slidable relative to the bolt member in a direction having a first component in the direction of movement of the bolt member between the locked and unlocked positions and a second component in a direction transverse to said first component of movement.
- the connecting member is caused to move relative to the bolt member in the direction transverse to the first component of movement, then that can cause relative movement of the bolt member relative to the connecting member in the direction of the first component of movement.
- the first component of movement may be horizontal movement and the second component of movement may be vertical movement.
- the movement of the connecting member relative to the casing is preferably arranged to be in different directions at different stages of movement of the connecting member. Those directions are preferably but not exclusively 45 degrees apart. In a described embodiment of the invention there are two such directions of movement 45 degrees apart. In the described embodiment a first direction of movement is horizontal movement and a second direction of movement is inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal. During movement of the connecting member in the second direction, the connecting member is caused to move vertically relative to the bolt member and thus there is relative horizontal movement of the bolt member and the connecting member, enabling the amount of movement of the bolt member to be amplified.
- the bolt member or connecting member may be engaged by the actuating member for only a portion of the movement of the actuating member.
- the bolt member may be arranged to be directly engaged by the actuating member during part only of the movement of the bolt member.
- the actuating member may, when not directly engaging the bolt member, continue to engage the connecting member. In such an arrangement, the engagement of the actuating member with the connecting member may continue to effect movement of the bolt member along the path between the first unlocked position and the second locking position.
- the actuating member is a cam.
- the actuating member is operated by manual rotation of a key, preferably in a cylinder lock.
- the present invention may, however, be used with any suitable locking mechanism.
- the throw of the bolt is more than 14mm and more preferably more than 17mm.
- the throw of the lock assembly is about 20mm, where a comparable conventional lock assembly would have a throw of about 14mm.
- any type of cylinder operated mortise lock may include the novel features described in this specification however in a preferred example the lock is a deadlock.
- the lock is a deadlock.
- the bolt member once the bolt member is in a locked position, it cannot be retracted into an unlocked position without activation of the actuating member with, for example, a key. More preferably, such deadlocking is also provided when the bolt member is in an unlocked position.
- Deadlocking may be provided by a deadlocking member mounted in the casing for movement relative to said casing.
- Said deadlocking member is resiliently biased towards the bolt member by, for example, a compression spring, and engageable with the bolt member such that the deadlocking member prevents movement of the bolt member relative to the casing.
- activation of the actuating member causes movement of the deadlocking member against the resilient bias, so that the deadlocking member is no longer engaged with the bolt member and no longer prevents movement of the bolt member.
- the bolt member is freely moveable between the unlocked and locked positions. It should be understood that a single activation of the actuating member effects both movement of the bolt member and the deadlocking member.
- Fig. 1 is a cut away view of a door lock assembly according to the present invention in a locked position
- Fig. 2 is a cut away view of the lock assembly of Fig. 1 in an intermediate position
- Fig. 3 is a cut away view of the lock assembly of Fig. 1 in an unlocked position.
- Fig. 1 shows a door lock assembly comprising a casing 1, a bolt member 2 having a bolt portion 3 and a lath portion 4.
- the door lock assembly further comprises a connecting member 5, movably coupled to the lath portion 4 of the bolt member 2, and a cam 6.
- the cam 6 is engageable with the lath portion 4 and the connecting member 5 to effect movement of the bolt member between an unlocked position (shown in Fig. 3) in which the bolt portion 3 of the bolt member 2 is substantially contained within the casing
- the bolt member 2 is slidably mounted on the casing 1 (by means not shown) for linear movement in and out of the casing.
- the connecting member 5 is formed with diagonal projections 12 on its face confronting the lath portion 4 of the bolt member 2 and the projections 12 are received in corresponding diagonal recesses 13 on the confronting face of the lath portion 4. In that way, the connecting member 5 is mounted for linear, diagonal movement relative to the bolt member 2.
- a post 11 projecting upwardly from the rear wall of the casing 1 is accommodated within a linear slot 14 in the lath portion 4 and within a shaped slot 15 in the connecting member 5.
- the slot 15 is substantially L shaped with the upright part of the 'L' sloping backwards at an angle of about 45 degrees.
- the cam 6 is rotatable by an appropriate key turned in a cylindrical lock (not shown) received in an opening IA of the casing. Rotation of the cam 6 brings a projection 7 on the cam 6, into contact with a co-operating projection 8 on the connecting member 5 and a wall of a recess 9 located on the lath portion 4 of the bolt member 2. Initially, rotation of the cam 6, causes movement of the bolt member into the casing and causes the connecting member 5 to move with the bolt member 2. This movement continues until the cam 6 is rotated to the position shown in Fig. 2. Further rotation of the cam 6 acts to pull the connecting member 5 further to the right (as seen in the drawings). That further movement to the right requires the connecting member 5 to move downwardly because of the shape of the slot 15.
- the downward movement of the connecting member 5 requires the bolt member 2, which is constrained to move horizontally, to move to the right relative to the connecting member S 5 by virtue of the engagement of the diagonally extending projections 12 on the connecting member 5 with the corresponding recesses 13 on the lath portion 4.
- the diagonal motion of the connecting member 5 acts to keep the projection 7 in contact with the connecting member 5, and allows continued retraction of the bolt portion 3 of the bolt member 2 into the casing 1, with the sideways movement of the bolt member 2 amplified over that of the connecting member 5.
- the lock assembly shown also has a deadlocking arrangement that can be seen in Figs. 1 to 3.
- the door lock arrangement includes a deadlocking member 16, mounted in the casing 1 for vertical movement relative to said casing. That deadlocking member 16 is resiliently biased towards the bolt member 2 by a compression spring 17.
- the deadlocking member 16 engages with projections 18 on the lath portion of the bolt member and prevents movement of the bolt member 2.
- Rotation of the cam 6 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2 causes the projection 7 to move the deadlocking member 16 upwards, against the action of the spring 17.
- That upward motion against the biasing means causes the deadlocking member to disengage from the projections 18 on the lath portion of the bolt member and allows the bolt member 2 to move freely relative the casing 1.
- Continued rotation of the cam 6 eventually results in the projection 7 disengaging from the deadlocking member 6, thus allowing the spring to bring the deadlocking member 16 back into engagement with one of the projections 18 as shown in Fig. 3.
- the arrangement described above enables the throw of the bolt member 2 to be substantially increased that which would be readily obtainable in a similar lock assembly without a connecting member 5.
- the throw is increased from 14mm to 20mm.
