  • This invention relates to a stopper rod for controlling the flow of molten metal, for example from a vessel, such as a tundish, to a mould, and more preferably, to a stopper rod for supplying an inert gas to the melt in the vessel.

  • This is in contrast to the Figure 2 arrangement, where this radial clearance can be provided between the external surface of the nut 20 and the inner cylindrical surface of the bore in which the nut is received.
  • the collar 24 is screwed down onto the seal 25 which is compressed thereby. Accordingly when the stopper rod is unheated, there is sealing both by way of the seal 19b and also by way of the seal 25, both of which seals are under compression. However as the stopper rod is heated, and the carrier rod 15b expands, the seal 19b is likely to start to leak in the normal manner as the compression thereof decreases due to the expansion of the carrier rod 15b. However the upper seal 25, which is restrained by the fixed screwed-in collar 24, will be subject to additional compressive forces between the expanding carrier rod 15b and the retained collar 24 to provide an effective gas-tight seal.
  • Figure 3 shows a conventional washer 26 on the carrier rod 15b at the top of the stopper rod body 11b, this washer being held down onto the top of the stopper rod body by a nut 27 which is screw threaded onto the carrier rod 15b, the washer and nut providing a conventional lock at the top of the stopper rod body.
  • the stopper rod of the invention shown in Figure 5 is similar in several respects to that shown in Figure 3 , having a stopper rod body 11c of refractory/ceramic material with a central, longitudinally extending circular cross-section bore 12c, which is open at the end of the stopper rod which is uppermost in use.
  • This upper laterally (radially) enlarged part of the bore 12c is formed with a seating surface 13c of frustoconical form, and spaced below this surface there is pressed into the material of the body 11c a (ceramic) fixing insert 14c with which an externally threaded end of the preferably metallic carrier element in the form of a rod 15c is engaged, so that a lifting or lowering of the carrier rod will result in a corresponding lifting or lowering of the stopper rod in its vessel.
  • the carrier rod 15c has a central gas passageway through it. It has an external collar 16c made up of an upper cylindrical part 17c and a lower part with a frustoconical undersurface 18c. A seal 19c, preferably a graphoil seal, is trapped between the surface 18c and the seating surface 13c to provide a gas tight seal when the stopper rod is unheated.
  • a conventional washer 26c is received on the carrier element, as with the Figure 3 embodiment, with a conventional insert in the form of a nut 27c, also as in the Figure 3 embodiment, being engaged on the screw thread 28, to force the washer downwardly when the nut is tightened.
  • the washer is of a diameter much greater than that of the bore 12c at the top of the stopper rod body.
  • the washer could be sized to be received in the upper end of bore 12c and thus at least partly received therein when it axially compresses the seals 25a, 25b.
  • the insert screw-threaded on the carrier rod, such as nut 27c could also at least partly be received in the bore 12c pressing down on the washer.
  • the further sealing means could, in any embodiment, be a single seal or any suitable number of seals.

Abstract

Cette invention concerne une quenouille servant à commander le flux d'acier en fusion à partir d'un panier de coulée, cette quenouille comportant un élément transporteur de métal (15a; 15b; 15c) venant se loger partiellement dans un passage interne (12b; 12c) de la quenouille. Cet élément transporteur comprime un organe d'étanchéité (19a; 19b; 19c) entre une surface inférieure tronconique d'une partie latéralement élargie de l'élément transporteur et une surface de siège complémentaire du passage de la quenouille. A cet endroit est également prévu un insert (20; 24; 27c) qui vient se visser sur l'élément transporteur ou sur le corps de la quenouille dans une position située au-dessus d'une partie latéralement élargie de l'élément transporteur, un organe d'étanchéité supplémentaire (21; 25; 25a, 25b) étant disposé entre l'insert et l'élément transporteur. L'insert est de préférence constitué par un écrou (27c) venant se visser sur une rondelle (26c) qui comprime l'organe d'étanchéité supplémentaire (25a, 25b).

Claims (25)

  1. Quenouille, comprenant un corps de quenouille en matériau réfractaire (11a; 11b; 11c) comportant un passage interne (12b; 12c), s'étendant d'une première extrémité du corps (11a; 11b; 11c) vers une deuxième extrémité de celui-ci, un élément de support métallique (15a; 15b; 15c), dont l'une des extrémités est reçue dans ledit passage (12b; 12c), l'élément de support (15a; 15b; 15c) comportant une partie latéralement élargie reçue dans une partie latéralement élargie du passage, la partie du passage définissant une surface d'assise, et des moyens d'étanchéité (19a; 19b; 19c) entre ladite surface d'assise et un côté inférieur de la partie latéralement élargie de l'élément de support (15a ; 15b ; 15c), un insert (20 ; 24 ; 27c) étant engagé par filetage dans un élément, l'élément de support (15a ; 15b ; 15c) ou le corps de la quenouille (11a ; 11b ; 11c), au niveau d'une position située au-dessus de ladite partie latéralement élargie de l'élément de support (15a ; 15b ; 15c), des moyens d'étanchéité additionnels (21 ; 25 ; 25a ; 25b) étant agencés axialement entre ledit insert (20 ; 24 ; 27c) et l'élément de support (15a ; 15b ; 15c), de sorte qu'une compression axiale desdits moyens d'étanchéité additionnels (21 ; 25 ; 25a ; 25b) entraînent l'établissement d'une étanchéité radiale entre l'élément de support (15a ; 15b ; 15c) et le corps de la quenouille (11a ; 11b ; 11c).
  2. Quenouille selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle l'insert a la forme d'un écrou (20 ; 27c) engagé par filetage à vis dans l'élément de support (15a ; 15c), l'écrou entraînant, lors de son serrage, une compression axiale desdits moyens d'étanchéité additionnels, établissant l'étanchéité entre le corps de la quenouille et l'élément de support.
  3. Quenouille selon la revendication 2, dans laquelle l'écrou (27c) entraîne une compression axiale desdits moyens d'étanchéité additionnels (25a, 25b) par l'intermédiaire d'une rondelle (26c).
  4. Quenouille selon la revendication 3, dans laquelle la rondelle (26c) est agencée autour de l'élément de support (15c) au niveau d'une extrémité du corps de la quenouille (11c).
  5. Quenouille selon les revendications 3 ou 4, dans laquelle la rondelle (26c) est plus grande que les moyens d'étanchéité additionnels (25a, 25b).
  6. Quenouille selon la revendication 5, dans laquelle la rondelle (26c) a un diamètre supérieur au diamètre de l'extrémité supérieure du passage interne (12c) dans le corps de la quenouille (11c), l'extrémité supérieure recevant les moyens d'étanchéité additionnels.
  7. Quenouille selon l'une quelconque des revendications 3 à 6, dans laquelle les moyens d'étanchéité additionnels (25a, 25b) sont deux joints de graphite, débordant de ladite extrémité supérieure du corps de la quenouille (11c) lorsque l'écrou (27c) n'est pas serré, et comprimés axialement dans ladite extrémité supérieure du passage lorsque l'écrou (27c) est serré sur la rondelle (26c), pour entraîner une compression axiale des joints de graphite par la rondelle (26c).
  8. Quenouille selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 7, dans laquelle les moyens d'étanchéité additionnels comprennent trois joints de graphite séparés.
  9. Quenouille selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 8, dans laquelle l'élément de support (15a ; 15b ; 15c), servant en service à connecter la quenouille à un dispositif de levage, comporte une alimentation de gaz le traversant.
  10. Quenouille selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 9, dans laquelle les moyens d'étanchéité (19a ; 19b ; 19c) sont un joint de graphite.
  11. Quenouille selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle l'insert (20 ; 27c) est engagé par filetage dans l'élément de support (15a ; 15c).
  12. Quenouille selon la revendication 11, dans laquelle le moyen d'étanchéité additionnel (21) est une garniture d'étanchéité.
  13. Quenouille selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle l'insert (24) est engagé par filetage dans le corps de la quenouille.
  14. Quenouille selon la revendication 13, dans laquelle le moyen d'étanchéité additionnel (25) est un joint de graphite.
  15. Quenouille selon la revendication 14, dans laquelle le joint de graphite est plus épais que le joint formant le moyen d'étanchéité.
  16. Quenouille selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle l'insert (24) est engagé par filetage dans un insert de céramique (28).
  17. Quenouille selon la revendication 16, dans laquelle l'insert de céramique (28) est pressé dans la quenouille, de sorte à constituer une partie de celle-ci.
  18. Quenouille selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 17, dans laquelle les moyens d'étanchéité (19a ; 19b ; 19c) sont agencés entre des surfaces en tronc de cône respectivement complémentaires de la partie élargie de l'élément de support et de ladite surface d'étanchéité.
  19. Quenouille selon la revendication 18, dans laquelle, jusqu'à l'échauffement de la quenouille, les moyens d'étanchéité (19a ; 19b ; 19c) sont comprimés entre l'élément de support et le corps de la quenouille et établissent un joint étanche au gaz entre eux.
  20. Quenouille selon la revendication 11, dans laquelle l'insert (20 ; 27c) est engagé dans un filetage complémentaire sur l'élément de support (15a ; 15c).
  21. Quenouille selon la revendication 20, dans laquelle l'insert (20 ; 27c) est vissé fermement sur les moyens d'étanchéité additionnels (25 ; 25a ; 25b) pour établir l'étanchéité radiale de la paroi annulaire interne du passage du corps de la quenouille.
  22. Quenouille selon la revendication 13, dans laquelle l'insert (24) est un collier.
  23. Quenouille selon la revendication 22, dans laquelle le collier est composé de métal ou de céramique et est engagé par filetage dans un filetage correspondant (23a) au niveau d'une surface supérieure interne du passage interne dans le corps de la quenouille.
  24. Quenouille selon la revendication 23, dans laquelle le filetage (23a) est pressé dans le passage du corps de la quenouille.
  25. Quenouille selon la revendication 24, dans laquelle le filetage est établi par un insert inséré par pression (28), faisant partie du corps de la quenouille.
