Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of watchmaking, and more particularly to timepieces of the type for determining true north or geographic north.
  • the watch described in the document FR 2,696,016 allows such determination. It has a hand of hours making a turn in twenty-four hours. To be able to determine the north direction, it is explained that the watch must be set to local solar time. Under these conditions and if the hour hand is oriented towards the sun, then the top of the dial indicates the geographical north. In order to be able to make a precise measurement at any time, the wearer must live in the local solar time or perform manipulations each time leading to the loss of the civil time.
  • the document DE 36 31 513 describes a watch with a first hour hand performing a turn in twelve hours and a second performing a turn in twenty-four hours.
  • the second hour hand allows, in principle, to determine the geographical north.
  • the difference between the civil time and the solar time makes this indication can be precise. Indeed, the offset between these two times can greatly exceed one hour, which represents an error of more than 15 °.
  • the document EP-A-1 343 056 describes a watch with a solar time display that can be adjusted separately from the current time display.
  • the phase difference between the current time and solar time displays is indicated by means of a specific hand.
  • the timepiece according to the invention comprises a control device and a timer wheel equipped with first and second mobile arranged to carry respectively first and second hour indicators, wherein these mobiles are kinematically connected to each other and the control device, the timer train being arranged so that the first mobile performs a turn in twelve hours and second mobile, intended to carry a solar time indicator, performs a turn in twenty-four hours.
  • the time train comprises, in addition, a third mobile carrying a civil time indicator and kinematically connected desmodromically to the first mobile and a fourth mobile bearing a solar time indicator and connected desmodromically to the second mobile.
  • the timer train is arranged so that the third mobile performs one revolution per hour and carries a calendar time hour hand and so that the fourth mobile performs one revolution in a shorter time than the second mobile.
  • the timer train and the control device are arranged so that, by an action on the control device, the second mobile can be rotated continuously, without affecting the position of the first mobile, and so that during the training of the latter, the second mobile is simultaneously driven in synchronism with the first mobile.
  • control device comprises a time setting rod which can occupy three positions, one of rest and first and second drawn positions. It is arranged so that a rotation of the rod rotates the second mobile only in the first drawn position, while it turns the first and second mobile simultaneously and in synchronism in second position drawn.
  • a disengagement device advantageously formed of a friction or a clutch, is inserted in the kinematic chain which connects them.
  • this disk also carries an angular scale for adjusting the position of the needle of solar time hours with reference to the longitude of the place considered.
  • the disc and the hour hand of civil time have scales arranged facing one another and dimensioned so as to form together a vernier. In this way, the measurement of the difference between solar time and civil time can be more precise.
  • the second mobile carries a solar time hand performing a turn in twenty-four hours and the fourth mobile a solar time hand performing a turn in twelve hours. In this way, by directing towards the sun the needle carried by the fourth mobile, that carried by the second mobile indicates the geographical north.
  • the watch shown on the figures 1 and 2 comprises a box 10, a dial 12 and solar hour time hands 14, civil time hours 16 and civil time minutes 18.
  • the solar time hour hand 14 performs one revolution in twenty-four hours, the one of the civil time hours 16 a turn in twelve hours, while the minute hand of the civil time minutes on the one hand , the record 20 minutes of solar time on the other hand make one turn per hour.
  • the movement according to the invention is, furthermore, provided with a time setting mechanism arranged so that, in a first position drawn from the rod, a rotation of the ring 22 causes the needle to rotate. solar time 14 and the disc 20, the position of the needles 16 and 18 not being influenced. In the second drawn position, a rotation of the ring 22 has the effect of driving both the needle 14 and the disk 20 as the needles 16 and 18.
  • the mechanism providing these functions will not be described because it equips most movements of modern watches equipped with both mechanical and electronic hands. Usually, however, the first drawn position corrects the date display. This difference does not change the general structure of this mechanism.
  • the movement equipping the watch with the figure 1 comprises a frame schematically shown, and comprising in particular a plate 24 and a ring 25 for complementary module, which is fixed on the plate 24.
  • the frame carries the various moving parts and in particular a timer wheel 26 disposed on its adjoining part to the dial 12 and a finishing train of which one of the mobiles, bearing the reference 28, is disposed at the center of the movement and performs a turn in one hour.
  • the number of teeth in the wheels of the clockwork 26 is chosen so that the mobile of the civil time hours 34 makes a turn in twelve hours, the barrel of the barrel wheel 34a carrying the needle 16.
  • the mobile time of solar time 36 carries the needle 14.
  • the pinion 34b of the mobile of the civil time hours 34, the intermediate mobile 40, and the mobile 36 comprise numbers of teeth chosen so that the mobile 36 is made a turn in twenty-four hours. In this way, the needle 18, perform one turn per day.
  • the intermediate mobile 40 and the timer 41 are respectively pivotally mounted on pins 42 and 43 integral with the ring 25.
  • a wheel 44 engaged with the solar time timer 41, is connected to the time control so that when the ring 22 is in its first drawn position and rotating it, the wheel 44 drives the timer 41. and with it, the mobiles 36 and 38, and the wheel 40b, without the wheel 40a rotates, because of the friction 40c.
  • the ring 22 If the ring 22 is in the second drawn position, its rotation causes the timer 32 and, with it, the floor 30, the mobile 34, 40, 36, 41 and 38. In this case, the friction 40c is not requested and both the needles 16 and 18 that the solar time hand 14 and the disc 20 rotate in synchronism.
  • the watch thus defined makes it possible to determine the position of the geographic north if the longitude of the place is known, or to determine the longitude if the north is known.
  • the wearer To determine the direction of the geographic north, the wearer begins by adjusting the solar time of his watch in the first position drawn from the crown 22. It can do so from the time given to it by a sundial. It brings the hour hand 14 to the position corresponding to the instantaneous solar time and, if the accuracy is sufficient, it can further refine the information by means of the disk 20, by bringing the index 20a into the position corresponding to the minute of solar time.
  • the solar time it is also possible to set the solar time by knowing the longitude and time zone of the location where the wearer is. If the latter is on the median meridian of the spindle, ie at 15 ° East or West, where "n" is the time zone number, the minutes of solar time are equal to minutes of civil time, at least in first approximation. If the longitude of the place is less than that of the median meridian, the solar time must be corrected negatively.
  • the solar time is to shift compared to the civil time of 32 minutes and 40 seconds.
  • This result is obtained by multiplying by four the angular offset between the median meridian and the meridian of the place, expressed in degrees and minutes, the result being expressed in minutes and seconds, since 15 ° corresponds to a time difference of 60 minutes.
  • the reading of this difference, on the disk 20, can be done in angular values (degrees of angle), which appear on an outer circle, or in time units marked on an inner circle, by aligning the index 20a with reference at the minute hand 18.
  • the latter directs the dial so that the midnight is turned towards the geographical north, then he turns the hour hand 14 to align it on the sun.
  • the angular offset between hands 14 and 16 gives the angle between the median meridian of the time zone and the longitude of the place. In the embodiment described above, this angle is defined by the position of the needle 18 on the disk 20.
  • the timepiece includes, as illustrated by the figures 1 and 2 , a box 10, a dial 12, hour hands 16 and 18 minutes of civil time and a ring 22. It further comprises two needles solar time hours 46 and 48 making a turn respectively twelve and twenty-four hours.
  • the determination of the direction of the geographical north is done by directing the needle 46 towards the sun.
  • the north is in the direction indicated by the needle 48.
  • the movement equipping such a watch differs slightly from that illustrated on the figure 2 . It has not been illustrated because it can be easily realized by the skilled person. It suffices, indeed, that the wheel carrying the needle 46 is connected to the wheel 34 by the wheel 40, both wheels 40a and 40b having the same number of teeth.
  • the wheel bearing the needle 46 is connected to that carrying the needle 48 by a gear reduction unit dividing the speed by a factor of 2.
  • a disk 50 replaces the solar hour of hours 46 hours. This disk thus performs a turn in 12 hours. It is provided with an index 50a representing the sun and, if it is directed towards it, directs the watch so that the needle 48 indicates the geographical north. Furthermore, the needle 16 on the one hand, the disc 50 on the other hand, are provided with scales 52a and 52b together forming a vernier 52 which allows a precise adjustment of the shift between the civil and solar times. The movement used may be identical to that fitted to the watch of the figure 3 .
  • the movement and the watches described may have many variants, without departing from the scope of the invention.
  • the solar time display could be limited to the needle 14. In this case, the accuracy of the setting would be reduced.
  • the friction could also be replaced by a clutch to isolate from one another the parts of the train relating to the display of civil time and solar time during the adjustment of the latter.
