Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a thick wing device with reversible wing profile with integrated mast and boom as well as the associated methods of implementation described hereinafter.
- a significant manufacturing cost of the profile of the wing-shaped mast compared with the use of a standard industrial tubular profile,
- strong constraints of use of this type of mast, concerning in particular their important weight and a consequent dredging under reduced wing and with the wetting,
- a great complexity of manufacture and implementation of a thick wing wing profile: in particular to obtain a lightweight structure, resistant, easily reversible and which it is also possible to reduce the power and the surface as a function of the increase of the force of the wind,
- obtention d'un très bon profil aérodynamique sur l'ensemble constitué du mât, de la bôme et de la voilure épaisse à profil aile réversible : d'une part la longueur du profil aile n'est pas limitée par la corde du mât aile et d'autre part il n' y a pas de rupture aérodynamique avec la partie arrière de la voilure à profil épais qui constituent avec le mât un seul et même ensemble aérodynamique;
- significant reduction in the manufacturing cost of the wing mast obtained by the implementation of a simple standard tubular profile of the industry, aluminum or carbon, for example,
- obtaining a very good aerodynamic profile on the assembly consisting of the mast, the boom and the thick wing with reversible wing profile: on the one hand the length of the wing profile is not limited by the wing mast rope and on the other hand there is no aerodynamic break with the rear part of the thick profile wing which together with the mast constitute one and the same aerodynamic unit;
- if necessary, the entire mast, boom and thick wing wing reversible profile can easily be made floating by the establishment of significant air volumes and distributed in independent compartments arranged between the two sails,
- compared to a conventional wing mast, a significant reduction in the weight of the entire mast and wing wing thick wing, both in navigation and for handling on the ground and the operations of matting / dismasting,
- compared to a conventional wing mast, a consequent decrease in the windage of the mast in the breeze when the wing is reduced or slumped and / or when the boat is at anchor,
- easy reduction of the surface (by simple reefing) and modification of the power of the thick wing with wing profile in navigation (by fixing the rear tack point of the thick wing on the boom)
- 1) The structure of the thick wing with reversible wing profile with integrated rotary mast and boom and the devices used according to a preferred embodiment of the invention (FIGS. 1, 2, 3) are characterized by:
- 1-1 a rotary tubular mast (1), with or without guying, the profile of which comes directly from the standard tubes available in industry and equipped with two lateral ropes (1A and 1B) whose spacing determines the aerodynamic profile of the whole mast and thick wing,
- 1-2 a tubular boom (2) fixed to the base of the mast and equipped with a "push-down" device (3) bearing on the mast (Figure 3),
- 1-3 a fully lathed double sail (4A and 4B) with a very flat profile,
- 1-4 each sail (4A and 4B) is equipped with slats (5) carbon made in two parts: 2/3 of the rear part of each batten is very stiff; the 1/3 front of each batten has a controlled lateral flexibility, the flexion of the front part of each batten towards the outer faces of the thick wing is made possible by the asymmetrical structure of the material used,
- 1-5 the rear tack points (6) of the two sails (4A and 4B) on the boom (2) and the rear part of each of the slats secured together in pairs and without slipping,
- 1-6 opening grooves of the two ropes located at the bottom of the mast positioned with an offset on the vertical plane to facilitate the installation of the thick wing on the mast with a central halyard returning between the two sails,
- 1-7 a double lever device (7A and 7B) attached to the base of the mast (1) equipped with two traction tips (8A and 8B) and taken up on the boom (2) with a locking cleat (9) ,
- 1-8 forced rotation and mast blocking by the crew in "the opposite direction" to that normally used for optimum positioning in the wind of a wing mast and a conventional sail (Figure 2 '). This forced rotation inverse of the mast and its blocking with the boom in this position puts under strong tension "the sail with the wind" and makes it possible thus to obtain a flat profile on the intrados of the thick wing as well as simultaneously the forced bending of the slats of "leeward sailing" with a predetermined wing profile forming the upper surface of the thick wing (Figure 2). At each tack, the crew changes the direction of the forced rotation of the mast to obtain the desired wing profile,
- 1-9 according to a variant of the invention, in the case of a guyed mast, a fixing point (10) of the stays and the stay fixed on a circular rail (11) placed on the mast and slidable in half circle from one edge to the other during transfers,
- 1-10 according to a variant of the invention, in the case of a floating rig, one (or) inflatable (s) air (s) (s) (12) placed (s) behind the mast between the two sails on all or part of the height of the mast. In addition to its buoyancy function of the rigging, the inflated air bead (12) provides an additional adjustment function of the spacing of the two sails which constitute the thick sails. The adjustment of the spacing between the two webs (4A, 4B) is obtained by modifying the air pressure inside the inflatable tube (12).
- 2) Kinematics of use by the crew of the thick wing set with reversible wing profile with integrated rotary mast and boom:
- 2-1 Preparation and installation of the thick wing with reversible wing profile:
- energizing and adjusting the battens (6) of each sail (4A, 4B),
- setting up the double sail (4A, 4B) on the mast (1) with the single halyard,
- tensioning the rope of the two sails (4A, 4B) by the hoist of the single cunningham (13),
- energizing the rear tack point (6) of the double sail (4A, 4B) on the boom (2) as a function of the desired power setting for the thick canopy and its adaptation to the variation of the wind force ,
- energizing and adjusting the boom device (3) of the boom,
- according to a variant of the invention, inflation of the air coil (s) (12) disposed between the two webs,
- depending on the navigation edge chosen by the crew, power up the "sail to the wind" to obtain a flat intrados by the forced reverse rotation of the mast (1) and its locking (9) on the boom (2) with the double lever device described above (7A and 7B). The forced reverse rotation of the mast simultaneously causes the bending of the battens of the "leeward sailing" with a predetermined wing profile forming the upper surface of the thick canopy.
- 2-2 Tacking:
- preparation for tacking by the release of the end of traction (8A or 8B depending on the edge chosen at the start) of its catch (9) on the boom (2),
- according to the new navigation edge chosen by the crew, powered by "the sail in the wind" to obtain a flat intrados and a wing-shaped extrados, by the forced reverse rotation of the mast with the device of the double lever described above (7A and 7B) and the locking (9) of the pulling end (8A or 8B) on the boom (2),
- 2-3 Adjustment of the power of the thick wing with reversible wing profile:
- modification by the crew of the tension of the rear tack point (6) of the double sail (4A, 4B) on the boom (2) according to the adjustment of the desired power for the wing and its adaptation to the variation of the strength of the wind,
- modification by the crew of the tension of the device "pushes down" (3) of the boom (2) to modify the profile (twisting of the upper part) of the thick wing,
- modification by the crew of the surface (by reefing) of the thick wing.
- 2-1 Preparation and installation of the thick wing with reversible wing profile:
- 1) The structure of the thick wing with reversible wing profile with integrated rotary mast and boom and the devices used according to a preferred embodiment of the invention (FIGS. 1, 2, 3) are characterized by:
The devices described above - thick wing assembly with reversible wing profile with integrated rotary mast and boom, as well as the implementation methods - are applicable for the equipment of monohull yachts and the different types of multihulls.
