Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method of decorating by sublimation.
- the present invention is addressed to a method of transferring a decoration using the colour sublimation technique, from a transfer support to an object.
- transfer support it is intended an element usually of laminar shape having a surface carrying a decoration containing colours adapted for sublimation which is to be transferred to an object to be decorated.
- a heating step is always provided the temperature of which must be at least as high as to cause sublimation of the colours of the decoration present in the transfer support to transfer it to the object to be decorated.
- the known methods are distinguishable from each other due to the type of the transfer support used and the method adopted in carrying out adhesion between the transfer support and the object to be decorated.
- a transfer support made of cloth or paper material between two membranes, usually made of silicone, which are subsequently sealed with each other, along the respective edges for example, to create a holding cavity for the object to be decorated and the transfer support. Subsequently the air present within the cavity is sucked out so that the transfer support may adhere to the object to be decorated and exert pressure thereon.
- both the cloth and paper material are pervious to air so that suction of the air present between the transfer support and the object to be decorated is ensured.
- a method that, through use of a flexible transfer support impervious to air such as a plastic or polyester support, contemplates the steps of laying the object to be decorated on the transfer support and folding said support until it fully envelops the object to be decorated. Subsequently, two opposite edges of the transfer support are sealed with each other to form a tube internally containing the object to be decorated. Air-sucking means is applied to the opposite ends of the tube formed with the transfer support. Activation of said air-sucking means enables the air present between the transfer support and the object to be decorated to be eliminated so that the latter are brought into direct contact.
- one end of the tube can be sealed so that the sucking means can be applied to one end alone of the tube itself. In this way it is possible to create the vacuum directly between the transfer support and the object to be decorated without resorting to the aid of said elastic membranes.
- this decorating method is particularly used in decorating objects of elongated shape such as section members that are several metres long.
- the correct adhesion of the transfer support to the object to be decorated represents a very complicated operation and is not always successful.
- the main technical task of the present invention is to propose a method of decorating by sublimation that has not the mentioned drawbacks.
- a still further aim of the present invention is to make available a method of decorating by sublimation enabling automation of the whole decorating process.
- the method of decorating by sublimation being the object of the present invention comprises the steps of setting a transfer support 1 carrying a decoration 2 to be transferred, covering an object 3 to be decorated with the transfer support 1, creating the vacuum between the object 3 to be decorated and the transfer support 1 to make the transfer support 1 adhere to the object 3 to be decorated and heating the object 3 to be decorated covered with the transfer support 1 to cause sublimation of the decoration 2 and transfer of same to the object 3 to be decorated.
- the object 3 to be decorated shown in Fig. 1 is a section member of elongated shape, however the object 3 to be decorated can be either any substantially bidimensional body such as a thin plate, or a tridimensional body of any shape.
- the decorating method comprises one or more preliminary surface treatment steps for the object 3 to prepare it to receive a sublimatic-ink decoration.
- these preliminary steps consist of cleaning, degreasing and painting operations carried out on the surface or surfaces of the object 3 designed to receive the decoration.
- the step of setting the transfer support 1 comprises the step of creating a plurality of grooves 4 in the transfer support 1 to define a plurality of outflow channels for the air that shall be sucked between the transfer support 1 and the object 3 to be decorated.
- each groove comprises a concave portion 4a or depression and a convex portion 4b or top portion.
- the distance joining the farthest points of the concave portion 4a and of the convex portion 4b of each groove 4, i.e. the depth of grooves 4 is included between 6 microns and 3000 microns, preferably being in the range of 1000 to 2000 microns.
- the thickness of the transfer support is preferably included between 12 and 50 microns. The groove depth and the transfer support thickness depend on the type of transfer support used and the type of object to be decorated.
- the plurality of grooves 4 in the transfer support 1 is obtained by an embossing operation carried out on the transfer support 1.
- press 6 comprises a first cylinder 7, preferably made of steel and having a plurality of ridges 8 and a second cylinder 9 made of steel as well and having a plurality of ridges 10 the shape of which matches that of the ridges 8 of the first cylinder 7.
- the two cylinders 7, 9 penetrate into each other by an amount corresponding to the height of ridges 8, 10.
- the two cylinders 7, 9 can be actuated for movement close to or away from each other and at least one of them, the first one 7 for example, is driven by an electric motor (not shown).
- both cylinders 7, 9 are powered.
- Making the transfer support 1 pass between the cylinders 7, 9 of press 6, the ridges 8, 10 of the first 7 and second 9 cylinders cause permanent set of the transfer support 1 creating the plurality of grooves 4.
- embossing of the transfer support 1 is carried out in a cold state, i.e. without heating the two cylinders 7, 9 of press 6.
- embossing of the transfer support 1 can be carried out under heating until a maximum temperature of 80°C.
- the grooves 4 obtained in the transfer support 1 are parallel to each other to increase efficiency of same during air suction between the transfer support 1 and the object to be decorated 3.
- the grooves 4 of the transfer support extend along the whole longitudinal extension of the latter so that said grooves 4 define air suction channels crossing the whole transfer support 1.
- the step of creating the vacuum between the transfer support 1 and the object to be decorated 3 is preferably carried out by creating the vacuum directly between the transfer support 1 and the object to be decorated 3.
- the transfer support is formed of a film of plastic material impervious to gasses, as shown in Fig. 2.
- the transfer support 1 may be also made of thermoplastic material. Suitable materials for the transfer support are therefore polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyurethane, polyamidic materials, PVC, PV butyrate and the like.
- the step of creating the vacuum directly between transfer support 1 and object to be decorated 3 takes place by laying the object to be decorated 3 on the transfer support 1 already submitted to the embossing operations. Subsequently, the transfer support is joined up along two opposite edges to form a tube open at both ends. This junction is preferably obtained by welding, but it can also take place by gluing after treating said edges with adhesive materials. Welding is for example an ultrasonic welding in which said edges of the transfer support are submitted to the action of a sonotrode.
- grooves 4 on the transfer support 1 enable an efficient air escape between the transfer support 1 and the object 3 to be decorated. The latter are therefore in direct contact so that optimal conditions are achieved for transfer of the decoration 2 from the transfer support 1 to the object 3.
- the transfer support 1 can be also such welded as to obtain a tube closed at one end like a bag.
- the transfer support 1 can be also such welded as to obtain a tube closed at one end like a bag.
- only one pump may be present, said pump being located at the open end of the bag to fully suck out the air present between the transfer support 1 and object 3.
- embossing of the transfer support 1 to obtain the plurality of grooves 4 preferably takes place in a cold state or at all events at temperatures at most as high as 80°C.
- the transfer support 1 is submitted to the action of heat the plurality of grooves is stretched and disappears.
- the transfer support 1 and the object to be decorated 3 are submitted to heating, at a temperature higher than or equal to 150-160°C, necessary to cause sublimation of the decoration colours, the inner efforts in the transfer support 1 greatly decrease.
- This feature causes disappearance of the deformations constituting the grooves 4 present in the transfer support 1.
- a complete disappearance of grooves 4 is facilitated by the action of sucking air between the transfer support 1 and object 3 to be decorated, which sucking action also goes on during the heating step.
- the transfer support 1 be provided with the decoration 2 to be transferred before the embossing process. In this way, once embossing has been carried out, both the concave portions 4a and convex portions 4b of grooves 4 will have the decoration 2 to be transferred.
- the transfer support 1 can be provided with the decoration 2 to be transferred subsequently to the embossing step.
- the decoration 2 is only present on the convex portions 4b of grooves 4. Therefore, when the transfer support 1 is released, the decorated object 3 will have decorated regions alternated with non-decorated ones.
- grooves 4 in the transfer support 1 can be disposed in a crossed relationship with each other.
- This configuration of grooves 4 for example can be obtained by embossing the transfer support 1 in a first direction and subsequently in a second direction inclined by a given angle relative to the first direction.
- this configuration can be obtained by submitting the transfer support 1 to the action of an embossing machine having rollers with raised portions which extend at right angles to the rotation axis of the rollers themselves and by subsequently submitting the transfer support 1 to the action of an embossing machine having rollers with raised portions extending in parallel to the rotation axis of the rollers.
- the step of creating the vacuum between the transfer support 1 and object 3 to be decorated contemplates indirect creation of said vacuum.
- the transfer support is made of a material pervious to air to enable the latter to leak out from the space between the transfer support 1 and the object 3 to be decorated.
- the transfer support is made of a cellulosic fibre material such as cloth, nonwoven fabric, paper and the like.
- the two membranes are made of plastic material, silicone for example, so that they can be submitted to elastic deformation and have sizes depending on the type of object to be decorated.
- the membranes can be formed of two sheets, or have a tubular shape. In the last-mentioned case it is not necessary to seal the two membranes with each other but it is merely sufficient to introduce the object to be decorated already wrapped in the transfer support, into the membrane in the form of a bag.
- the cavity defined by the two membranes or the tube-shaped membrane is put into fluid communication with air sucking means creating the vacuum within' the cavity and causing adhesion-of the transfer support 1 to the object 3 to be decorated, in such a manner that the transfer support 1 exerts pressure on the object to be decorated.
- suction of the air can also go on during the step of heating the object 3 wrapped in the transfer support to facilitate relaxation and stretching of grooves 4.
- Heating takes place at temperatures included between 160°C and 220°C, preferably at 200°C over periods of time sufficient to cause sublimation of the decoration 2.
- said relaxing and stretching effect of grooves 4 will be of different amounts, in particular greater for transfer supports made of plastic material and smaller for transfer supports based on cellulose fibres.
- the invention achieves the intended purposes.
- the grooves in the transfer support prevent formation of air bubbles or pockets during creation of the vacuum between the transfer support and the object to be decorated, and transfer of the decoration to the object takes place in an optimal manner and without faults.
- the invention also enables important advantages to be reached.
- embossing of the transfer support greatly increases elasticity of the transfer support and, as a result, an easier covering and wrapping of the object to be decorated.
- the embossed transfer support can be also wrapped on, and caused to adhere to objects having a particularly irregular section, i.e. provided with a plurality of recesses, projections, undercuts and the like.
- grooves enable an easy and immediate alignment of the transfer support on the object to be decorated, because they define easily identifiable reference lines.
