Description

The invention relates to a device for applying one or both sides of at least one liquid or pasty application medium to a running surface, comprising a curtain applicator for applying the at least one application medium and having at least one catching device for collecting the at least one application medium in the start and stop Phase of the coating process of the curtain applicator, wherein the curtain applicator delivers the at least one application medium as a substantially gravity-moving curtain during the coating process to the moving surface, and the surface when directly applied the surface of a paper, cardboard or other fibrous web and indirect application the surface of a transfer element, preferably an applicator roll, which delivers the at least one application medium to the surface of the fibrous web.

So that the fibrous web to be coated is provided with the application medium over a maximum length, it seems obvious to move the catching device as quickly as possible under the curtain when starting the coating process. However, if at the start of the coating process, the catcher is moved too fast under the thin curtain, the thin curtain is entrained by the air surrounding the catcher in the direction of movement of the catcher, so that application medium reaches the outer edge of the catcher and drips onto the fibrous web. Due to the dripping coating material it comes to order errors. As far as the coating material does not drip down and on the outer edge of the Drip tray dries, the dried-on paint can peel off and fall on the fibrous web, so it also comes to order errors. Due to the deflection of the curtain from the vertical, the curtain oscillates back and forth a few times, which also leads to order errors, in the form of areas of different line thicknesses. Thus, areas with too low line width and areas with a very high line width can arise. The areas with the very high line thickness can lead to a rupture of the fibrous web and cause drying problems. Since the dryer has to provide a higher drying capacity for drying these areas at times, this requires either a high level of skill of the machine operator or an elaborate control technology of the dryer. Conversely, if, at the start of the coating process, the thin curtain is moved too slowly away from the catcher, then the thin curtain is attracted by cohesive forces from the catcher. By attracting the curtain to the catcher also gets application medium to the outer edge of the catcher. The application medium then runs down the outer edge of the collecting device and drips onto the fibrous web. In addition, the curtain performs in this case again a pendulum motion, so that the above problems arise. The pendulum movement can also pollute a arranged near the curtain applicator suction for sucking the entrained by the fast moving fibrous web air layer.

From the US 5885659 is a curtain applicator with a relative to this movable catcher known.

The invention has the object to improve the device of the type mentioned in that when starting the coating process order errors are reduced and the fibrous web is coated over its maximum length.

The invention solves the problem by a device of the type mentioned, in accordance with the invention, the curtain applicator and the At least one collecting device at the beginning of the coating process at a speed of 20 mm / s to 150 mm / s are movable relative to each other.

At a relative speed between the curtain applicator and the catcher in this speed range, job errors are significantly reduced. In particular, it is prevented that application medium reaches the outer edge of the collecting device and drips onto the fibrous web. In addition, the pendulum movements of the thin curtain are negligible or no longer noticeable. Consequently, the increased demands on the drying and the risk of undesired tears of the fibrous web are also eliminated. In addition, this speed range ensures that the fibrous web to be coated is provided with the application medium over its maximum length.

In the device according to the invention, the at least one collecting device further comprises a trough with an edge facing the curtain during the coating process, wherein the edge has a gradient of at least 10 ° relative to the horizontal. At a gradient of at least 10 ° avoids that when hitting the coating medium on the edge air enters the application medium, which forms bubbles in the application medium and thus leads to order errors. The exact inclination of the slope depends on the application medium used and on its formulation. During the standby state, in which therefore the fibrous web is not coated, the curtain falls permanently on the at least 10 ° inclined edge, which is preferably only a few millimeters high. Since the curtain falls on the outer edge of the catcher during the standby condition, only a small relative movement between the curtain applicator and the catcher is required to start the coating operation from the standby state and to interrupt the coating operation.
Furthermore, in the device according to the invention, the slope of the edge passes into a tank bottom which has a gradient of less than 10 °, preferably a gradient of 1 ° to 5 °. This ensures that the catcher does not interfere with the collides under the catcher continuous fibrous web and the collected application medium is still dissipated satisfactorily.

Particularly good results are achieved when moving the curtain applicator and the catcher with a relative speed between 100 mm / s and 150 mm / s to each other.

The speed range of the invention is meaningful only when starting the coating process, but can also be used when interrupting the coating process. However, when interrupting the coating process, the curtain applicator and the catcher can also be moved toward each other at a higher speed. In particular, in an outline of the fibrous web, it makes sense to the curtain applicator and the catcher to move towards each other at maximum speed to completely catch the curtain as quickly as possible.

Advantageously, the speed of the fibrous web can be at least 500 m / min. However, web speeds of 2500 m / min are also possible. At these web speeds, the relative speed according to the invention between the curtain applicator and the catcher is large enough to provide the fibrous web to be coated with the application medium over the maximum length.

In a development of the invention, the relative speed according to the invention between the curtain application unit and the collecting device can also be realized at a falling speed of at least 50 m / min. Even at the present time maximum falling speeds of 200 m / min, the relative speed of the invention between the curtain applicator and catcher can be realized.

The relative speed of the curtain applicator and the at least one Capture device can be constant or variable. Thus, for example, at a variable relative speed, the relative speed at the beginning and end of the relative movement between the curtain applicator and the catcher may be lower and highest between the two endpoints of the travel path. As a result, the unwanted pendulum motion can be additionally reduced.

The edge of the edge can be razor sharp. This ensures that no application medium runs down outside on the edge of the catcher when the catcher is driven into the curtain when interrupting the coating process or is moved out under the curtain when starting the coating process.

For this reason, it is expedient if between the razor sharp edge and the inside of the edge, a sloping to the tub interior surface is provided.

Hereinafter, an embodiment of the device according to the invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 1 shows a device 10 for one or both sides applying a curtain forming application medium 11 on a fibrous web 12. The apparatus 10 has a curtain applicator 13 for applying the application medium 11 and a trough-shaped collecting device 14 for collecting the application medium 11. The curtain applicator 13 and the catcher 14 may, depending on If necessary, be moved along an arrow 15 for the running direction relative to each other. In this case, the curtain applicator 13 stand still and the catcher 14 are moved or the catcher 14 is stationary and the curtain applicator 13 moves. In a further alternative, it is also possible that the curtain applicator 13 and the catcher 14 move simultaneously. According to the invention, the curtain applicator 13 and the collecting device 14 move at a speed of 20 mm / s to 150 mm / s relative to each other. At a relative speed between the curtain applicator 13 and the catcher 14 in this speed range, an optimal order is achieved and at the same time the fibrous web 12 deleted over its maximum length.

The trough-shaped collecting device 14 has an edge 16 which has a gradient with an inclination angle β of at least 10 °. Due to the gradient of at least 10 ° is avoided that upon impact of the application medium 11 on the edge 16 air enters the application medium 11, which may lead to order errors. During the standby state of the catcher 14, where the fibrous web 12 is not coated, the application medium 11, as shown, permanently falls on the at least 10 ° inclined edge 16. Since the application medium 11 falls during the standby state on the outer edge 16, must of the Curtain applicator 13 and / or the catcher 14 are covered only a small distance to start the coating process from the standby state (start phase) or to interrupt the coating process (stop phase).

The edge 16 is preferably only a few millimeters high. The slope of the edge 16 passes into a trough bottom 17, which usually has a gradient with an inclination angle α of 1 ° to 5 °, so that the collecting device 14 does not collide with the fibrous web 12 and the captured application medium is still dissipated satisfactorily.

The edge 16 has a razor-sharp edge 20 (see Fig. 2 ). At the razor-sharp edge 20 is a surface 21 which drops at an angle δ to the trough interior. By the surface 21 it is ensured that the application medium 11 is guided when hitting the edge 20 into the tub interior, and does not run down the outside edge 16 when the catcher 14 is driven when interrupting the coating process under the curtain formed by the falling application medium 11 or when starting the coating process is moved out under the curtain.
