- the outer surface 38 of the wrist pin 32 is constructed for rotatable and/or pivotal connection to the pin bores 20 of the piston body 12 and the wrist pin bore 28 of the connecting rod 24 such that the need to incorporate bushings, as are commonly used, in the pin bores 20 and the wrist pin bore 28 is eliminated.
- a manganese phosphate MnP (OH) 2 coating 40 is applied to the running surfaces 22 of the pin bores 20, and to the ground running surface 30 of the wrist pin bore 28.
- the manganese phosphate is engineered to provide at least in part the necessary tribological properties without having to incorporate the typical bushings within the bores 20, 28.
- the outer surface 38 is produced having a surface roughness (R a ) with an arithmetic average deviation of 0.10 ⁇ m or less.
- the outer surface 38 also has a Kurtosis value that is inversely proportional to the surface roughness (R a ) such that a product of the surface roughness (R a ) and the Kurtosis value (K) represented mathematically as (Ra x K) is between about 0.30 ⁇ m to 0.60 ⁇ m.
- the outer surface 38 has a skewness of about -1.0 to 0.0 and a lay angle ⁇ relative to the axis 36 of about 85 to 95 degrees.
- the outer surface 38 has a hardness of about 60 (HRC) or greater.
- Skewness can either take on a negative or a positive value. If the skewness is negative, this represents that a larger number of local maxima are above the mean as compared to a Gaussian distribution, which has a skewness value of zero. For a positive skewness, the converse is true, wherein a larger number of local maxima are below the mean as compared to that of a Gaussian distribution.

- the calculations are based on a square area analysis. As such, rather than obtaining values based simply on a linear reading, as is commonly known, a more representative reading is obtained by taking into account a broader spectrum of the outer surface 38.
Claims (5)
- Axe de piston (32) destiné à joindre une bielle (24) à un piston, ledit axe de piston (32) comprenant :un corps d'axe de piston globalement cylindrique (34) comprenant un axe longitudinal central (36) et une surface extérieure (38) ; et dans lequel ladite surface extérieure (38) est caractérisée en ce qu'elle a une rugosité superficielle extérieure inférieure à 0,10 µm, un coefficient d'aplatissement qui est inversement proportionnel à la rugosité superficielle, de telle sorte que le produit dudit coefficient d'aplatissement et de ladite rugosité superficielle soit entre environ 0,3 µm et 0,60 µm, une asymétrie d'environ - 1,0 à 0,0, et un angle d'orientation par rapport à l'axe (36) d'environ 85 à 95 degrés.
- Ensemble de piston comprenant un axe de piston (32) selon la revendication 1, comprenant également un piston ayant au moins un alésage d'axe de piston (20) et une bielle (24) ayant un alésage, d'axe de piston (28) ; dans lequel l'axe de piston (32) peut être accueille dans lesdits alésages pour raccorder ledit piston à ladite bielle (24).
- Ensemble de piston comprenant un axe de piston (32) selon la revendication 2, dans lequel lesdits alésages d'axe de piston (20, 28) sont sans douilles et recouverts par un revêtement à frottement réduit (40).
- Ensemble de piston comprenant un axe de piston selon la revendication 3, dans lequel ledit revêtement à frottement réduit (40) comprend du phosphate de manganèse.
- Ensemble de piston comprenant un axe de piston selon l'une quelconque des revendications 2 à 4, dans lequel ledit piston comprend un corps de piston (12) formé avec ledit alésage d'axe de piston (20) et une collerette de piston (31) formée en une seule pièce avec ledit corps de piston (12) du même matériau.
