Definitions
- the invention relates to the use of an additive to improve the thermal stability of hydrocarbon compositions, as well as a particular hydrocarbon composition having improved thermal stability.
- Fuels intended for the operation of aircraft engines are known (for example turbojets and ramjets), conventionally called kerosene or jet-fuel. They are generally composed of a medium distillation cut of petroleum origin, generally containing additives.
- fuel in addition to its role as a propellant, performs other functions. These functions are in particular: heat transfer fluid through exchangers: fuel / hydraulic fluid (cooling of the hydraulic fluid); fuel / oil (cooling lubricating oil); fuel / air (fuel cooling); power transmission fluid: nozzle cylinders; regulation fluid (of the engine in particular).
- the fuel can be subjected to high temperatures, for example of the order of 200 ° C., or even more in contact with the walls.
- the fuel is the seat of oxidation and thermal decomposition phenomena which generate on the one hand varnish and gums, on the other hand particles and coke.
- these products cause damage and malfunctions (in particular malfunction of the main injectors, damage to the combustion chambers and the first stage of the turbine (excessive temperature), malfunction of the reheat injectors, vibrations, loss of efficiency of heat exchangers, etc.).
- Problems can then arise from starting (especially cold), re-ignition in flight, loss of performance.
- new generation aircraft pose further problems or exacerbate existing problems, as they aim to increase the engine thrust / mass ratio and reduce fuel consumption, which results in: an increase in the speed of rotation of the engine and correspondingly an increase in the engine operating temperature, of the lubricating oil; a reduction in the size of the exchangers (size, mass); an increase in the number of electrical and electronic circuits to be cooled and a reduction in fuel flow (consumption).
- This therefore requires an increase in the thermal capacity of the fuel which must be able to evacuate a greater quantity of heat.
- the desired gain is at least 100 ° F, allowing to go from 325 ° F (163 ° C) to 425 ° F (218 ° C) for the maximum temperatures commonly encountered and to go from 400 ° F (204 ° C) at 500 ° F (259 ° C) for the fuel temperatures in contact with the walls.
- US-P-5468262 describes an additive for improving the thermal stability of a fuel, this additive being prepared by (i) reaction of a polyamine, a aldehyde and a phenol to a phenol-aldehyde-amino condensate; and (ii) Mannich reaction of this condensate with a succinic anhydride carrying a substituent which is a polyolefin with residual unsaturation, in particular polyisobutene.
- This additive can be represented schematically by the following formula (with PIB for polyisobutene and PA for polyamine / aldehyde):
- This additive is used, according to this document, at a content of between 0.2 and 20% by weight of the fuel.
- Such an additive poses several specific problems. First of all, the quantities required for the additive to be effective are very important, since they exceed 2000 ppm, which makes the final fuel a high cost. Then, the presence of a heavy GDP group (with residual unsaturation) promotes the initiation of deposits on walls, which is precisely what we want to avoid. Finally, such an additive by its surfactant nature (hydrophobic / hydrophilic duality) and its high contents favor the contamination of the fuel by water, which must be avoided, in particular in aircraft fuels.
- EP-A-0678568 describes an additive which reduces deposits in aircraft reactors. This additive is an acid derivative
- (thio) phosphonic used in the example in an amount of 25 ppm.
- it is a derivative of polyisobutenethiophosphonic acid, more particularly its ester with pentaerythritol.
- this additive poses several problems. On the one hand it is based on phosphorus, which causes atmospheric pollution linked to the rejection of acid compounds (phosphates, phosphoric acids) in the combustion gases. On the other hand, it also includes a polyisobutene group, and poses thus the same problems as those already exposed above for the additive object of US-P-5468262.
- US Pat. No. 3,443,758 proposes to incorporate into the hydrocarbon stream an anti-fouling composition comprising a hindered phenol, a succinimide obtained by reaction of substituted succinic acid or anhydride with a polyamine, and N, N '-disalicylidene-1,2-propane diamine.
- the succinimide is obtained from an anhydride or succinic acid substituted with an R '' 'radical comprising from 30 to 200 carbon atoms. Again, the presence of such a heavy group promotes thermal decomposition of the additive, and turns out to be a precursor of deposits and fouling.
- US Patent 3,776,835 also describes a method for reducing the fouling speed inside heat exchangers in which flows of hydrocarbon flows. This method consists in adding to the hydrocarbon streams (a) hydrogen and (b) a deposit inhibiting agent chosen from mono and polyamines and amides containing up to 50 carbon atoms.
- a deposit inhibiting agent chosen from mono and polyamines and amides containing up to 50 carbon atoms.
- succinimides generally comprising 20 to 200 carbon atoms are cited.
- succinimide additives in hydrocarbon fuels is also known to improve other types of properties, in particular cold properties.
- patent application EP 626.442 deals with the problems of degradation of the cold resistance caused by the use in ester fuels resulting from the transesterification of animal or vegetable oils or fats, and recommends the use of such esters. in combination with a pour point lowering additive and optionally a carboxylic dispersant which may among other things be a compound obtained by reaction of a succinic anhydride substituted with an amine.
- the succinic acid substituent contains a minimum of 12 and preferably 50 carbon atoms, with a very clear preference for polymers of molecular weight ranging from
- Additives based on succinimides are used here as dispersing agents in cold-resistance compositions.
- their function is to further improve the cold behavior of the mixture, by keeping the hydrocarbon crystals which form at low temperature in suspension to prevent them from settling.
- This anti-sedimentation function only concerns the properties of fuels at low temperatures, and has nothing to do with thermal stability at high temperatures.
- the subject of the invention is an additive which makes it possible to improve the thermal stability of hydrocarbon compositions, in particular aircraft fuels, with a higher efficiency than that of the additives already known for this purpose, while avoiding the problems encountered with these additives.
- the present invention therefore proposes the use, to increase the thermal stability of a hydrocarbon composition, of at least one additive which is the product of the condensation reaction between: (i) at least one alkylsuccinic or alkenylsuccinic anhydride I of general formula (I):
