Definitions

  • the present invention relates to ultra-opaque coated sheets and their method of manufacture.
  • Ultra-opaque coated sheets are commonly used in various applications for which they must be able to be printed and where it is imperative that the opacity of said sheets is much greater than that of conventional coated sheets of comparable weight per square meter.
  • Ultra-opaque sheets are thus known, which are produced by coating, traditionally by means of air-knife, drag-blade or rotary-bar coaters, of at least one of the two faces of a multijet paper support, preferentially a trijet where the central jet of gray paper composition brings the ultra-opacity by absorption of light, and is framed by two jets of white paper composition such that the set of each white jet supporting one or more white layers gives the ultra-opaque sheet has a white and homogeneous visual appearance.
  • a disadvantage of this technique is the difficult and expensive implementation of a multijet machine, especially for the manufacture of low weight papers.
  • Ultra-opaque sheets are also known which are made by at least two jets of white coated paper laminated with a black glue and where also the ultra-opacity is provided by the absorption of light due to the black coloration, while maintaining a white and homogeneous visual appearance.
  • This technique has the disadvantage of using a laminating step which is often difficult to achieve, because of the choice and the amount of glue to be used, which does not allow high speeds of manufacture and which can sometimes cause assembly defects between the paper jets.
  • One of the aims of the invention is therefore to provide ultra-opaque sheets that can be manufactured at low cost, at high speeds and that do not have the manufacturing constraints of the prior art.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide ultra-opaque sheets having a very good surface state.
  • the Applicant proposes in particular to use the most widespread production equipment, especially single-purpose paper machines, and reduce the number of manufacturing steps, including the laminating step.
  • the Applicant has endeavored to provide an opacifying base support from a single stream of colored material on which is applied one or more white layers on at least one of the faces.
  • the colored support is intended in this case to screen the passage of light, a prerequisite for obtaining the desired opacity.
  • the intensity and the shade of the color of the support depend on the final application and the ultra-opacity sought by absorption of light: preferably the color of the base support is more or less gray, more or less black.
  • the colored monojet is therefore coated, depending on the final applications on one or both sides, so as to provide a white and homogeneous visual appearance, as well as good printability.
  • the Applicant has taken advantage of modern methods of coating in the paper industry, to ensure uniformity in the coating, a necessary condition for obtaining good opacity and a good impression in the end.
  • the curtain coating process is a predosed coating method, used in the photographic industry for more than 20 years. This technology has been developed for photographic films, which require the deposition of many different layers, generally between 8 and 10, with severe constraints both in terms of the surface condition and the thickness of the layers applied.
  • the curtain coating process is based on the free flow on a surface from a coating head situated above the surface to be coated at a height of between 10 and 25 cm.
  • the coating head is defined according to the properties of the coating fluid, so as to obtain the most uniform coating film thickness in the machine direction or across the machine.
  • Two types of coating heads are generally used: slotted heads and sliding surface heads, as shown respectively by Figures 1 and 2 .
  • curtain coating One of the interests of curtain coating is the ability to apply two or more layers simultaneously.
  • the slit heads are in practice limited to 2 or 3 layers maximum because of their configuration, while the maximum number of layers simultaneously deposited in a sliding surface head may exceed 10.
  • Another advantage is the absence of contact between the coating head and the support, unlike blade coating in particular.
  • the subject of the invention is therefore an ultra opaque coated sheet consisting of a colored support made from a monojet of material, said support being coated on at least one of its faces with one or more white or light pigmented layers.
  • pigmented layers is meant the compositions (mainly comprising pigments and binders) commonly used for coated-print coated papers. Their number, exact composition, weight per square meter depends on the final application of the ultra-opaque sheet.
  • the subject of the invention is an ultra-opaque sheet which is characterized in that it consists of a colored support comprising opacifying pigments, made from a paper monojet based on cellulosic fibers, said support being lying on at least one of its faces of one or more layers white pigments deposited by means of a curtain coating head, and that it has an index of ultra-opacity greater than or equal to 94 in the case where its basis weight is less than 300 g / m 2 and an index of ultra-opacity greater than 94, and advantageously greater than or equal to 98 in the case where its basis weight is greater than or equal to 300 g / m 2 , as defined in claim 1, and in that it has a whiteness measured according to ISO 11475 superior at 75.
  • the ultra-opacity index will be explained later in the disclosure of the invention.
  • the sheet has a whiteness measured according to ISO 11475, preferably greater than or equal to 78.
  • the weight per square meter of the paper monojet is directly dependent on the application. It is between 50 and 500 g / m 2 .
  • the subject of the invention is also a process for manufacturing a sheet defined above, in which a colored support comprising opacifying pigments is first produced from a paper monojet based on cellulosic support fibers which is then coated on at least one of its faces with one or more white pigmented layers by means of a curtain coating head.
  • the opacifying coloration is obtained by incorporating opacifying pigments into the mass of a paper jet.
  • the opacifying coloration is obtained by deposition on the surface of a paper jet of a precoat of opacifying pigments either by means of a gluing press or by means of a coating device. , in particular a curtain coating head, and preferably simultaneously and with the same curtain coating head as when coating the white pigmented layer or layers.
  • the coloring material used is carbon black.
  • the invention also relates to the ultra-opaque playing card obtained by the method previously defined or comprising as base a sup opaque coated sheet previously defined.
  • the invention can be extended to the preparation of ultra-opaque sheets of low color or pastel for which the modifications to be made relate only to the coating pigment and not on the essential elements of the invention.
  • a light source Incident is constituted by an incandescent filament lamp, transparent glass bulb, marketed by Philips under the reference 60W-220V.
  • the coated sheet whose opacity is to be determined, is placed both between and in contact, a) light source side, a diaphragm diameter 12 millimeters and b) opposite side, diameter sensor 20 millimeters d a luxmeter device marketed by Gossen under the reference Mavolux Digital.
  • the distance between the luxmeter sensor centered on the diaphragm and the light source is pre-adjusted so that, without the coated sheet, the value read in direct incident light is 14000 lux and the value L in lux of transmitted light is recorded in the presence of the reclining leaf.
  • the homogeneity of the visual appearance of the surface of the different leaves is evaluated using the Khufu device marketed by Techpap.
  • This camera equipped with a CCD camera performs an image analysis of the differences in color and brightness of the surface and gives a global value even lower than the homogeneity is large.
  • the whiteness of the surface of the different leaves is measured according to ISO 11475 in the absence of ultraviolet illumination.
  • An ultra-opaque sheet according to the prior art 1a consists of a paper machine bijet carrier paper one of which is a gray paper composition to provide opacity and the other is a white paper composition; this bijet, on the outer face of the white jet, is coated by steel blade process of a white pigmented layer mixture of 90% calcium carbonate and 10% styrene butadiene latex to give said sheet 1a the state of surface required for print-writing use on the recumbent side.
  • An ultra-opaque sheet according to the invention 1b of weight per square meter similar to the sheet 1a, is made from a monojet paper of weight per square meter equal to 100 g / m 2 of gray color whose opacifying coloring is hereby provided by the curtain coating process in the form of a precoat on each side of 10 grams per square meter, said layer having in dry 0.05 part of black of carbon for 100 parts of a mixture of 90% calcium carbonate and 10% styrene butadiene latex.
  • This colored monojet is then coated, still by curtain coating process, on each of its two faces by 10 grams per square meter of a white pigmented layer identical to that used in Example 1a.
  • Another ultra-opaque sheet 1c is made by coating steel sheet of the colored monojet of the sheet 1b, with 10 grams per square meter on each side of the same white pigmented printing-writing layer that the sheet 1b.
  • Table 1 The optical characteristics of the three sheets are compared in Table 1.
  • Table 1 Leaf 1a 1b 1 C Weight (in g / m 2 ) 130 120 120 Ultra-opacity index 91 94 92 Whiteness 75 78 75 Homogeneity 2.4 1.5 5.8
  • the sheet 1b according to the invention although of slightly lower weight per square meter, is at the same time more ultra-opaque, whiter and of a more homogeneous surface state than the sheet 1a of the prior art manufactured from a more complex industrial process (bijet).
  • the single-ply sheet 1c made with coating steel blade process does not have sufficient surface homogeneity.
  • An ultra-opaque sheet according to the prior art 2a consists of two jets of white coated paper laminated with a black glue representing in dry 0.24 grams per square meter of carbon black.
  • An ultra-opaque sheet according to the invention 2b of weight per square meter identical to the sheet 2a, is made from a monojet paper weight per square meter 240 grams of gray-black color where the opacifying coloring is made as at Example 1b by a precoat on each side of 5 grams per square meter, said layer comprising 0.5 dry part of carbon black per 100 parts of a mixture identical to that used in Example 1b.
  • This colored monojet is then coated, again by the curtain coating process, on each of its two faces by 30 grams per square meter of a white pigmented layer identical to that used in Example 1b.
  • Table 2 Leaf 2a 2b Weight (in g / m 2 ) 300 300 Of which weight of opacifying black per square meter (in g) 0.24 0.05 Ultra-opacity index 99 98 Whiteness 79 78 Homogeneity 1.4 1.6
  • the sheet 2b according to the invention produced without the additional step of laminating, has the same level of surface quality (whiteness, homogeneity) as the sheet 2a of the prior art.
