An inventive method for trimming a single book with a leading edge and two side edges provides that a book is transported in a transport direction so that the leading edge is parallel to the transport direction, that the leading edge is trimmed by means of a reciprocating front knife when Aligned leading edge parallel to the transport direction, that the book is transported in such a way that the side edges are parallel to the transport direction, and that the side edges are trimmed by reciprocating side knives, when the side edges are aligned parallel to the transport direction.
Through the use of reciprocating front and side knives which cut the edges parallel to the direction of travel, the output can be improved and low cost reciprocating blade arrangements can be used to trim a single book. In addition, a similar knife design can be used for all three knives. By the invention, a trim of higher quality is achieved than with rotary blades, which trim a scale flow. A registration of the front cutting blade in the transport direction is not required.
The leading edge is preferably trimmed before the side edges, and the spine of the book abuts against a fixed guide during the leading edge trimming. The alignment of the leading edge to the back is advantageously achieved by a simple, inexpensive method. There is no problem with signatures with a preceding section. Preferably, the back is scored on the sides by means of a laser to reduce fraying before side trimming.
The book is preferably cut by 90 ° between the leading edge trimming and the side edges in a plane of the book, so that the transporting direction is changed by 90 °.
For example, the book may be stapled on a pickup transport and placed on the page prior to the first cut.
Furthermore, the present invention provides a trimming device for individual books with a transport device for transporting a book in a transport direction, a reciprocating front knife for trimming a front edge of the book, wherein the front knife has a first knife edge parallel to the transport direction of the transport device on the front knife, and at least one reciprocating side knife for trimming the side edges of the book, the side knife having a second knife edge parallel to the transport direction.
The transport device preferably comprises a turntable which rotates the book in a plane of the book by 90 °. The rotary unit may be configured as a circular rotary unit or an inline rotary unit.
The front knife is preferably arranged upstream of the side knives with respect to the transport direction. On the front knife a fixed guide is provided against which the back of the book is aligned. The transport device comprises an obliquely to the fixed guide arranged first transport section for bringing the back to the fixed guide and a second parallel to the fixed guide extending transport section to.
With respect to the transport direction upstream of the side knives, a laser scribe device and a side edge alignment device may be provided, depending on the type of collation of the book for either the head or foot of the book.
Entangled transport containers can, for example, transport the book away from a straddle carrier transporting this straddle transporting device, rotate it from the straddled position into a flat position and transfer it to the transport device.
All reciprocating knives may be of the same design and preferably have a linear knife edge that is parallel or at a predetermined angle to the plane of the book during the trimming operation. These may be, for example, knives of the HT type from Standard Duplicating Machines Corporation, based in Andover, Massachusetts, USA ( www.sdmc.com ), or piston-driven knives. The term "reciprocating knife" here means that the knife is moved into the plane of the book and out of it to prune the book.
