Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electronic ballast for at least one Gas discharge lamp according to the preamble of claim 1 and a method to operate such a device.
- the invention is concerned with the Operations during the ignition of the gas discharge lamp.
- the entrance of a typical electronic ballast forms a connection to the power supply network connected high-frequency filter, which with a rectifier circuit connected is.
- the rectified by the rectifier circuit Supply voltage is a smoothing circuit to generate a DC link voltage supplied, one fed with the DC link voltage
- the inverter generates a high-frequency AC voltage, which is applied to the Load circuit with the gas discharge lamp connected to it is applied.
- the Operating with the high frequency AC voltage has a reduction in Electrode losses and an increase in light output result. There is also the possibility to light the lamps in a controlled and gentle manner.
- the present invention is therefore based on the object of being reliable Ignition of the lamp with an inductance reduced in volume bring about.
- the ignition current or the ignition voltage should be in one remain acceptable range to exclude damage to the ballast can.
- the object is further achieved by a method according to the invention.
- the premature opening of the switch means that the current switching period of the two switches of the inverter is shortened, which is equivalent to one higher instantaneous frequency. This allows a suitable choice of Reference values of operation in the non-linear area of the choke can be mastered.
- the switch is subsequently switched on again regularly, i.e. in the subsequent switching periods the previously set switch-on time for the two Switch or its operating frequency is maintained over a longer period Period of controlled operation in the limit area of the choke of the load circuit and ultimately enables the lamp to be ignited safely.
- the control circuit for monitoring the load circuit current preferably detects the via a resistor arranged at the base of the half bridge of the inverter falling voltage and compares it with a reference voltage. The The current is then monitored during the switch-on phase of the lower one Half bridge switch.
- the switches are preferably MOS field effect transistors, whose gates by means of the control circuit pulse width modulated signals can be controlled.
- that can Ballast have an additional safety circuit, which in the case of late opening of the switch and thus uncontrollable voltage peaks Inverters completely shut down for a temporary period. For this the control circuit also monitors the lamp voltage and compares it this with a further predetermined limit value.
- the essential components of the present invention are in the circuit diagram in Fig. 1 shown.
- the further elements of the Ballast - for example, the rectifier and the smoothing circuit - are already well known and will therefore not be explained in more detail below.
- the inverter is formed by a half bridge made up of two series-connected electronic switches Q1 and Q2. These switches Q1, Q2 can be formed, for example, by two MOS field effect transistors.
- the base of the half-bridge is connected to ground via a shunt resistor R1, while the DC voltage U BUS is present at the input of the half-bridge, which can be generated, for example, by shaping the mains voltage using a combination of radio interference suppressor and rectifier.
- any other DC voltage source can also be present on the half bridge.
- the Gas discharge lamp LA which is preferably a fluorescent lamp acts, contained load circuit connected.
- This consists of one Series resonance circuit, which consists of a choke L1 and a resonance capacitor C1 composed.
- a series circuit consisting of a coupling capacitor C2 and the gas discharge lamp LA connected in such a way that they are parallel to the Resonance capacitor C1 is.
- the two switches Q1, Q2 of the inverter are activated by a Control circuit 1, the control signals to the gates of the two field effect transistors Q1 and Q2 transmitted.
- a clock pattern for the two switches Q1, Q2 is shown in Fig. 2a.
- a switching period begins when the upper switch Q1 of the half-bridge is switched on or closed for a specific switch-on time t on , the term “closing” when using field-effect transistors means that these are switched through.
- the switch Q1 is opened again or the transistor is blocked and the switch Q2 is alternately closed.
- a predetermined delay time t d is waited between the opening of the switch Q1 and the subsequent closing of the switch Q2 in order to avoid a simultaneous closing of the two switches Q1, Q2 and thus a short circuit of the inverter in any case.
- the second switch Q2 is also closed for the switch-on time t on and then opened again. After waiting again for the delay time t d , the upper switch Q1 is closed again, thus ending a complete switching period.
- T p 2 ⁇ ( t on + t d )
- the electrodes of the Lamp LA preheated which is done by having a AC voltage is applied at a frequency that is significantly above that Resonance frequency of the load circuit is.
- the resulting tension is then too low to cause the LA lamp to ignite.
- the ignition of the lamp LA is initiated, which is done by gradually increasing the switch-on time t on for the two switches Q1, Q2 of the inverter and accordingly reducing the operating frequency of the inverter.
- the frequency then approaches ever closer to the resonance frequency of the load circuit until the resulting voltage is so great that it causes the gas discharge lamp LA to ignite.
- a high current can occur in the load circuit before the lamp LA is ignited, which has the consequence that the inductor L1 no longer acts linearly and consequently high current and voltage peaks occur.
- the control circuit 1 monitors the level of the current supplied to the load circuit during the switch-on phase of the lower switch Q2. For this purpose, it detects the voltage drop across the shunt resistor R1 and feeds it to a comparator 2, which compares it with a reference voltage V ref1 .
- This voltage V ref1 is selected such that the maximum current is sufficient on the one hand to ensure reliable ignition and on the other hand excessive current loads are avoided, in particular if the choke is operated in saturation.
- the reaction of the control circuit 1 to a state in which the voltage drop across the resistor R1 exceeds the reference value V ref1, that is to say the current supplied to the load circuit exceeds the maximum current of the inductor L1, is shown in FIG. 2b.
- the first half of the switching period corresponds to the timing diagram shown in FIG. 2a for the uncontrolled case, since in the present example the monitoring described below only takes place during the switch-on phase of the lower switch Q2.
- the upper switch Q1 is thus closed for the switch-on time t on currently set by the control circuit 1, and then the lower switch Q2 is closed after opening the switch Q1 and waiting for the delay time t d .
- the voltage U R1 dropping across the shunt resistor R1 rises continuously, as shown in the upper area of FIG. 2. This is monitored by the control circuit 1. As soon as the measurement voltage U R1 exceeds the reference voltage V ref1 , a pulse P occurs at the output of the comparator 2, which causes the control circuit 1 to switch off the switch Q2 after a system-related response time t r . The switch-on time t ' on of the lower switch Q2 is thus reduced compared to the switch-on time t on of the upper switch Q1. After waiting for the delay time t d , the first switch Q1 then becomes normal again, that is, it is switched on and off again for the previously defined switch-on time t on .
- the first two steps 100 and 101 of the method consist in that the upper switch Q1 is switched on and is switched off again normally after the switch-on time has elapsed.
- the lower switch Q2 is switched on in step 103.
- the switch-on time of the switch Q2 it is continuously checked whether the reference voltage V ref1 has been reached (step 104). If this is not the case, then an internal count value R of the control circuit 1 is increased by (step 105) and the switch Q2 is regularly switched off (step 106).
- Increasing the count value R in step 105 results in an increase in the switch-on time t on for the two switches Q1 and Q2. This is because the switch-on time is derived from the count value R, for example by an internal counter of the control circuit 1 counting up to the value R.
- t on R ⁇ T cl
- T cl corresponds to the duration of the base clock of an internal timer of the control circuit 1.
- step 107 the switch Q2 is immediately switched off (step 107) and the delay time is waited for in step 108 before the switch Q1 is switched on again. In this case, the count R and thus the on-time for the two switches Q1 and Q2 are no longer increased, which, as explained above, has the result that controlled operation of the throttle is realized.
- the Count R does not have to be increased with every pass. For example, a Increase the count R only every third or fifth pass depending on how fast the frequency of the inverter during the Ignition operation should be reduced.
- FIG. 4 An extended variant of the circuit according to the invention is therefore shown in FIG. 4, in which the lamp voltage is additionally monitored.
- the voltage drop across the lamp LA is fed here to a further comparator 3, which compares it with a further reference value V ref2 . If the lamp voltage exceeds this second reference value V ref2 , the control circuit 1 switches the inverter off completely for a short period of time in order to avoid damage to the entire circuit arrangement.
