Definitions
- THE PRESENT INVENTION relates to a file, and more particularly relates to a file to retain paper.
- the present invention seeks to provide a file for retaining paper which is not necessarily pre-punched.
- a file comprising a rear cover and a front cover, the file being provided with a clamping mechanism, the clamping mechanism including two pivotally mounted gripper elements, each spring-biased to a gripping position, and each being movable against the spring-bias to a release position, each gripping element having a gripper leg extending above a co-operating surface so that paper may be gripped between the gripper leg and the co-operating surface when the gripper element is in the gripping position, each gripper element having an actuating arm positioned so that a manual force applied to the actuating arm will move the gripper leg from the gripping position to the release position.
- each gripper element has one end of the actuating arm connected to an intermediate portion which is retained in position, and which defines the axis for pivotal movement of the element, the intermediate portion being connected by a gripper arm to the gripper leg, the gripper leg extending substantially parallel to the intermediate portion.
- the spring-bias is provided by a spring comprises a helical spring which surrounds the intermediate portion, one end of the helical spring engaging the gripper element, the other end of the spring engaging a support on which the gripper elements are pivotally mounted.
- the two gripper elements are of mirror-image configuration and are located so that the actuating arms are adjacent each other, a bridge element being provided extending over the actuating arms, part of the bridge element being capable of being depressed so that depression of part of the bridging element causes a downward force to be applied to the actuating arms to move the gripper elements to the release position.
- the gripper elements are mounted on an integral support, the support having upstanding ridges to engage and retain the intermediate portions of the gripper elements to hold the gripper elements in position.
- part of the front cover of the file is cut-away in the region of the clamping mechanism.
- a file 1 in accordance with the invention comprises a rear cover 2 which is connected by means of a spine 3 to a front cover 4. At the central part of the file, with regards to the height of the file, part of the spine 3 and part of the front cover are cut-away to form an aperture or opening 5.
- the clamping mechanism 6 comprises a rectangular support plate 7 which is symmetrical about its mid-line.
- the plate 7 has apertures 8 therein to receive rivets to enable the support plate to be firmly connected to the rear cover 2 of the file 1.
- One side edge of the support plate defines two horizontally extending lugs 9, 10 adapted to define support surfaces for paper to be retained within the file.
- abutment wall 11, 12 At the edge of the rectangular support plate adjacent the lugs 9, 10 are upstanding abutment walls 11, 12 against which paper may abut.
- a vertical slot 13 is formed in the abutment wall 11, and a similar slot 14 is formed in the abutment wall 12.
- a retaining ridge 15 Extending perpendicularly to the rear of the abutment wall 11 across the upper surface of the support plate 7 is a retaining ridge 15, which extends transversely across the generally rectangular support plate 7.
- Adjacent and parallel to the retaining ridge 15 is a locating ridge 16, the locating ridge 16 having a vertical slot 17 formed therein adjacent one end thereof.
- an aperture Located in the base plate between the retaining ridge and the locating ridge is an aperture, not visible in Figure 3.
- the ridges 15 and 16 define a groove between them.
- a retaining ridge 18 which corresponds with the retaining ridge 15, and a locating ridge 19 provided with a vertical slot 20 which corresponds with the locating ridge 16.
- the gripper element 20 has a linear actuating arm 22, one end portion of which is cranked through 90° to form an actuating leg 23.
- the other end of the actuating arm 22 is also bent through 90° to merge with one end of an intermediate section 24 which is parallel with the actuating leg 23.
- the other end of the intermediate section 24 is cranked through 90° to form a gripper arm 25 which is angularly off-set from the actuating arm 22 about the axis of the intermediate section 24.
- the free end of the gripper arm 25 is bent through 90° to form a gripper leg 26 which is parallel with the actuating leg 23, and the intermediate section 24.
- the free end of the gripper leg 26 is provided with a sleeve 27 of rubber or other material possessing a high coefficient friction.
- An actuating spring 28 is associated with the gripper element 20.
- the spring 28 has one end 29 passing through a bore which extends diametrically through the intermediate section 24 of the gripper element 20.
- the spring presents a plurality of helical turns 30 which surround the intermediate section 24, and the spring terminates with a projecting locating arm 31 which extends generally parallel with the actuating leg 25.
- the gripper element 21 is of the same design as the gripper element 20, possessing the same features, as described above, but in a mirror-image form.
- the locating arm 31 of the spring 28 is passed through the aperture in the base located between the retaining ridge 15 and the locating ridge 16, and the clip is manipulated so that the intermediate portion 24 is received in the groove defined between the retaining ridge 15 and the locating ridge 16.
- the locating arm 31 of the spring is then beneath the support plate 7.
- the gripping arm 25 then passes through the vertical slot 17 formed in the locating ridge 16, and the locating leg 26 passes through the vertical slot 13 formed in the upstanding wall 11.
- the gripping element 21 may be mounted in position in a similar way relative to the retaining ridge 18 and the locating ridge 19.
- a bridge element 32 is provided formed from an appropriate plastics material. At one end of the bridge element there is a terminal portion having two depending walls 33, 34 adapted to engage frictionally with the retaining ridge 15 and the locating ridge 16. An intermediate upwardly arched portion 35 extends to another terminal portion of the same design having two depending walls 36, 37 adapted to engage the retaining ridge 18 and locating ridge 19.
- the ends of the gripper legs such as the gripper leg 26, provided with the sleeve 27, extend above the lugs 9 and 10 which project from the support plate 7.
- the springs such as the spring 24, serve to bias the actuating legs, such as the leg 23, upwardly towards the underside of the arched portion 35 of the bridge element 32.
- the sleeve-covered ends 27 of the gripper legs 26 are biased downwardly so as to trap paper, the edges of which is mounted on the projecting lugs 9 and 10 of the support plate 7. Thus the paper is trapped between the gripper legs and the co-operating surfaces of the lugs 9, 10.
- a downward force is applied manually to the centre of the arched portion 35 of the bridge element 32, because the bridge element is formed of a resilient material, a down force is applied on the actuating legs, such as the leg 23, causing the gripper elements 20, 21 to pivot about the axis of the intermediate portion, such as the intermediate portion 24 which is located between the retainer ridge 15 and the locating ridge 16.
- the gripper arms such as the gripper arm 26, then move upwardly permitting paper to be removed from the file, or fresh paper to be introduced into the file. If the force applied to the gripper elements is then released, the gripper elements return, under bias of the springs, such as the spring 24, to the gripping position.
