Definitions
- the present invention relates to a mixing device according to claim 1.
- the present invention relates to the use of the mixing device for the production of thermoplastically processable molding compositions, in particular so-called “additive batches”.
- the invention relates to methods for producing thermoplastically processable molding compositions, in particular additive batches, according to claim 7.
- Organic polymers for example thermoplastics
- additives are, for example, stabilizers against oxidative degradation, which can be initiated by light or heat, acid scavengers which neutralize acid residues caused by catalyst residues, dyes, flame retardants, lubricants, antistatic agents or the like.
- additive batches are often used in order to avoid the often disadvantageous handling of pure additives in the additives of thermoplastically processable polymers.
- These additive batches are special molding compositions in which the required additives are embedded in a matrix of, for example, thermoplastic polymer, but the additive content is significantly higher than that of conventional additive molding compositions.
- thermoplastics or additive batches are known to the person skilled in the art (see, for example, Saechtling, Kunststoff-Taschenbuch, Hanser Verlag, Kunststoff, Vienna, edition 26, 1995, pages 191 to 246).
- the additives mentioned are mostly in powder or liquid form at room temperature.
- the use of these additives in powder form is associated with disadvantages when incorporated into the thermoplastically processable component using the known mixing devices and processes.
- dusts are formed, which can be harmful to health or can cause dust explosions.
- the incorporation of powdery additives into thermoplastically processable components can also be problematic if the melting point of at least one additive component is far below, for example 50 ° C. below, the temperature which limits the thermoforming range of the thermoplastic matrix downwards, for example about 110 ° C.
- additives with a melting point of approx. 150 ° C can be critical if the temperature, which limits the lower limit of the thermoforming range of the thermoplastic matrix, is correspondingly high, for example approx. 200 ° C.
- the incorporation is particularly problematic if the melting point of an additive is approximately 50 to 350 ° C. below the processing temperature of the thermoplastically processable component.
- incorporation is particularly critical if the melting point of the additive is in the range or only slightly above the ambient temperature of the processing machines, for example between approximately room temperature and 60 ° C.
- the problems that can arise in these cases are: premature melting of the additive already in its metering device, which, for example, leads to a Incorporation with an extruder necessary pressure build-up can no longer be achieved; the formation of bonds and caking of the additive; uneven or incorrect dosage of the additive; non-homogeneous distribution of the additive in the thermoplastically processable component, for example due to large viscosity differences between the thermoplastic component and the additive present as a low-viscosity melt; Decomposition or discoloration of the additive in the solid or molten state due to excessive thermal stress, often under the influence of atmospheric oxygen.
- thermoplastic matrix One way of incorporating such additive components into the thermoplastic matrix is to meter the additive in liquid at a temperature above its melting temperature.
- this procedure requires the thermal stability of the additive above its melting temperature. If this resistance is not sufficient, this can result, for example, in the decomposition of the additive and discoloration of the thermoplastically processable molding compositions.
- liquid dosing is limited to the use of a positive-displacement pump as a dosing device, since, for example, an extruder can no longer achieve the pressure build-up required for dosing.
- EP 565 184 A1 describes processes in which a plurality of additive components are formed into granular compactates by means of solids mixers or extruders, which can then be incorporated into thermoplastic polymers.
- These compacts which are produced purely by mechanical pressure on the powder components, are usually not very resistant to mechanical abrasion, which is why the risk of dust formation cannot be excluded.
- such compacts tend to stick and bake, especially at warm ambient temperatures, if they contain low-melting components.
- WO 98/13412 and EP-A 534 235 each disclose mixing devices which consist of a main and a side extruder and which are used to produce impact-modified thermoplastics starting from at least one water-containing component.
- Such devices have for the production of additive batches in which at least one component is used as the additive, the melting temperature of which is far below the temperature which limits the thermoforming range of the thermoplastic matrix downwards, or whose melting point is in the range or only slightly above the ambient temperature of the processing machines , for example between about room temperature and 60 ° C, the disadvantage that there are stickies and uneven doses in the area of the metering of additive into the thermoplastic matrix can come. In these cases, it is not possible to obtain homogeneous, thermoplastically processable molding compositions.
- JP-A-61 095923 discloses an apparatus for dosing an additive into an extruder while cooling the feed line.
- the object of the present invention was to provide devices and methods for producing homogeneous thermoplastically processable molding compositions, in particular additive batches, from at least one thermoplastic component and at least one further component, the melting or decomposition temperature of the further component being far below, for example about 50 ° C below, the temperature that limits the thermoforming range of the thermoplastic component downwards, for example approx. 110 ° C, or the melting or decomposition temperature of the further component is approx. 50 to 350 ° C below the processing temperature of the thermoplastic component, or the melting or decomposition temperature of the other component is in the range or only slightly above the ambient temperature of the processing machines, for example between about room temperature and 60 ° C, at which the problems mentioned above do not occur.
- the mixing device according to the invention consists of at least one screw machine S1 and one screw machine S2.
- the mixing device can also be constructed from more than the screw machines mentioned.
- Screw machines are generally to be understood to mean all apparatuses which are provided with screw, screw or helical conveying devices or conveying devices having the same effect with these conveying devices, and which are suitable for processing solid, plastically deformable or liquid substances.
- screw kneaders, plasticizers, co-kneaders, kneading mixers, shear roller extruders or screw extruders are suitable as screw machines.
- Screw extruders are preferred, twin screw extruders are particularly preferred.
- Suitable screw machines are described, for example, in Saechtling, Kunststoff-Taschenbuch, Hanser Verlag, Kunststoff, Vienna, edition 26, 1995, pages 191 to 246.
- Screw machines usually have sections of different functions, so-called "zones".
- the different zones of the screw machines are not necessarily identical to the individual components such as housing parts or screw segments from which the screw machines, for example Extruder, are mounted.
- a zone usually consists of several components. Depending on the function, the individual zones can have different spatial dimensions, for example different lengths or volumes.
- Screw machines usually have one or more of the zones described below.
- snail machines can also have zones whose function is not explicitly described below.
- the dosing zone is to be understood as the section of a screw machine in which one or more components, for example a thermoplastically processable polymer, are fed to the screw machine.
- This supply can take place with a metering device which, for example, consists of an opening at the top in the screw machine with a funnel attached, so that the component to be metered enters the screw machine by gravity.
- the metering device can also consist, for example, of a screw conveyor or an extruder, through which the component to be metered is pressed through the metering opening of the screw machine.
- Suitable extruders for metering purposes are, for example, twin-screw extruders with intermeshing, counter-rotating screws. Pumps are also suitable as dosing devices for liquid components.
- the dosing devices usually work automatically. If the dosing zone contains several dosing openings, these can e.g. one behind the other along an imaginary axis in the longitudinal direction of the screw machine, in a circle along the circumference of the screw machine or along an imaginary helix around the screw machine.
- the plasticizing zone is to be understood as the section of a screw machine in which a component is brought into a thermoformable, usually molten or plastically deformable, state. As a rule, this is achieved by heating or mechanically introduced energy.
- plasticizing elements for example screw elements with a small pitch in the conveying direction, kneading blocks with narrow or wide, conveying or non-conveying kneading disks, screw elements with a pitch opposite to the conveying direction, or a combination of such elements.
- the choice of plasticizing elements in the plasticizing zone depends on the type, number and dimensions of the components of the polymer mixture, in particular the viscosity and softening temperature and the miscibility of the components.
- the homogenization zone is to be understood as the section of a screw machine in which one or more components, at least one of which is in the thermoformable state, are homogenized. This homogenization is usually done by mixing, kneading or shearing. Suitable mixing, kneading and shearing elements are, for example, the agents already described as plasticizing elements.
- the ejection zone is to be understood as the section of a screw machine in which the discharge of the thermoplastically processable molding compound, for example the additive batch, is prepared from the screw machine and carried out through the outlet opening.
- the discharge zone usually consists of a screw conveyor and a closed housing part, which is closed with a defined outlet opening.
- a nozzle head is preferably used as the outlet opening, which is designed, for example, as a nozzle plate or nozzle strip, wherein the nozzles can be circular (perforated nozzle plate), slot-shaped or in some other way.
- the product discharged as a strand in the case of a nozzle plate is, as usual, e.g. cooled in water and granulated. Cube pelletizing is possible especially when using a slot nozzle.
- a special nozzle head with subsequent underwater pelletizing is used instead of the nozzle strip described above with the otherwise usual combination of strand draw, water bath and granulator.
- the liquid or plastic material passes through a nozzle plate with preferably circularly arranged round bores, is separated from rotating knives under water and cooled under water, the material solidifying into more or less round, pearl-shaped grains.
- a hot blow-off process is used, the liquid or plastic material emerging from the nozzle head not being cooled by liquid, but after exiting from the nozzle head, after being briefly cooled by air, it is comminuted while still hot (granulated). becomes. The resulting granulate is then cooled further or cools down during further processing, if this is necessary.
- Additive batches are preferably produced as granules. If the thermoplastically processable molding compound is not an additive batch, but already contains all additives and additives in the amount suitable for the desired end use, further processing in the hot state or direct extrusion of sheets, foils, pipes and profiles is also advantageous.
- the discharge zone is provided with a device for filtering the liquid or plastic material emerging from the screw machine, which is located in front of the nozzle head.
- a device for filtering the liquid or plastic material emerging from the screw machine which is located in front of the nozzle head.
- Such devices for continuous melt filtration are known to the person skilled in the art and are commercially available.
- a conveyor element for example a melt pump or a screw conveyor, can be installed between the discharge zone and the melt filtration in order to build up the pressure in the melt that is necessary to pass the filter unit.
- the liquid or plastic material emerging from the filtration device is granulated or further processed, as has already been described.
- a screw machine can also contain further zones, for example venting or degassing zones for removing gaseous constituents or squeezing and dewatering zones for separating and discharging liquid constituents, which can be water but also other substances.
- venting or degassing zones for removing gaseous constituents or squeezing and dewatering zones for separating and discharging liquid constituents, which can be water but also other substances.
- Degassing, squeezing and dewatering zones as well as their equipment and arrangement are described in WO 98/13412, for which reason reference is expressly made to the cited document with regard to these features.
- a section of a screw machine can also combine two or more of the zones mentioned. If, for example, another substance is metered into the homogenizing zone of an extruder, the homogenizing zone simultaneously functions as a metering zone. In an analogous manner, the other of the zones mentioned can be implemented simultaneously in one section of the screw machine.
- the individual zones can be clearly demarcated from one another or continuously merge.
- the transition from the plasticizing zone to the homogenizing zone cannot always be clearly delimited spatially. There is often a continuous transition between the two zones.
- the various zones of a screw machine can be individually heated or cooled in order to set an optimal temperature profile along the conveying direction.
- Suitable heating and cooling devices are known to the person skilled in the art. The following may be mentioned as examples of heating devices: direct firing, electric heating tapes, heat-transferring media such as water, silicone oils, paraffins or similar organic compounds suitable for heat transfer, inorganic salt melts such as sodium nitrate / potassium nitrate mixtures or low-melting metal alloys or gases, for example water vapor, flow through heating pipes or heating jackets. Electrical heating or heating jackets or pipes through which flow is preferred.
- cooling devices are: air cooling, Peltier elements, cooling tubes or cooling jackets through which media such as water, salt solutions, brines or low-melting organic compounds flow, which are suitable for heat dissipation. Flow through cooling tubes or cooling jackets are preferred.
- the temperatures and spatial dimensions of the individual zones to be selected in individual cases differ depending on the chemical and physical properties of the components and their proportions.
- the screw machine S1 has at least one metering zone, at least one plasticizing zone and at least one homogenizing zone.
- the screw machine S1 is provided with heating devices at least in the plasticizing and homogenizing zone. Other zones of S1, for example metering, discharge or degassing zones, can also be heated.
- the discharge zone is preferably provided with a heating device. Zones of S1 that are not plasticizing or homogenizing zones can also be provided with cooling devices.
- the dosing zone of S1 is preferably provided with a cooling device.
- the screw machine S2 usually has at least one metering zone.
- the dosing zone of S2 is provided with a degassing opening.
- the screw machine S2 can be designed with or without heating or cooling devices. S2 is preferably provided with a cooling device in one, several or all zones.
- the outlet opening of S2 in the plasticizing or homogenizing zone of S1 is connected to the screw cylinder of S1.
- the connection preferably takes place in the homogenization zone of S1. It is essential that the connection of S1 and S2 takes place by means of a connecting device which is provided with a cooling device acting up to the inner wall of the screw cylinder of S1.
- the screw cylinder is the space within the screw machine in which the screw elements rotate or in which the material to be processed is transported.
- the inner wall of the screw cylinder is the wall of the housing of the screw machine, which is in contact with the material to be processed.
- the connecting device can be a separate component, for example a transfer nozzle.
- the term “connecting device” also means devices permanently attached to S1, for example flanges or screw connections, to which S2 can be connected directly.
- the connecting devices fixedly attached to S1 and / or the screw machine S2 itself are provided with a cooling device which acts up to the inner wall of the screw cylinder of S1, for example a completely or partially cooled housing section.
- the cooling devices mentioned are also suitable for cooling the connecting device.
- the temperature of S1, with the exception of the metering zone of S1 is generally chosen so that it is significantly above the temperature which limits the thermoforming range of the thermoplastic deformable component to be processed in S1. As a rule, this means that the temperature of S1, with the exception of the metering zone of S1, is equal to or higher than the softening temperature of the thermoplastic to be processed. Temperatures of at least 50 ° C., particularly preferably at least 60 ° C., above the softening temperature are preferably chosen. These and the temperature specifications for screw machines mentioned below each relate to the temperature of the parts of the screw machine in contact with the feedstock or product, for example the inner wall of the screw barrel of an extruder.
- the upper limit of the temperature range depends on the nature of the thermoplastically processable components used and optionally other existing components. Temperatures at which the components are not damaged are preferred. Generally one chooses temperatures in Range from 150 ° C to 400 ° C, preferably 160 ° C to 350 ° C.
- the Dbsierzone of S1 is usually kept at a temperature which is below the melting or softening temperature of the dosed substances in order to prevent caking in this zone.
- the temperature of the screw machine S2 and / or the connecting device is usually chosen so that the ejection temperature of the components processed in S2 is so low that these components are mainly ejected from S2 in solid form.
- S2 is generally not supplied with heat from the outside, but is preferably cooled by methods known per se or in such a way that the screw cylinder of S2 and / or the connecting device are cooled below the melting temperature of the component to be metered, for example to room temperature.
- An essential property of the mixing device according to the invention is that S1 and S2 are connected by a connecting device which is provided with a cooling device which acts as far as the inner wall of the screw cylinder of S1.
- the connection device is approx. 50 ° C. to 350 ° C. colder than the inner wall of the screw cylinder of S1 in the area of the connection point.
- the connecting device has a temperature of not more than about 60 ° C., preferably not more than 50 ° C., particularly preferably not more than 30 ° C., while the inner wall of the screw cylinder of S1 in the region of the connection point has a temperature of more than about 110 ° C, preferably more than 130 ° C, particularly preferably more than 150 ° C.
- the temperatures to be selected in individual cases depend on the components K1 and K2 to be mixed.
- S2 has a screw which builds up a pressure in the transition from S2 to S1 which is sufficiently high to convey against the pressure of S1.
- the screw from S2 in the transition from S2 to S1 can be single-threaded and / or be provided with narrowing screw flights.
- a so-called main extruder is used as screw machine S1 and a so-called side extruder is used as screw machine S2.
- each individual extruder can be constructed in a cost-saving manner with the aid of commercially available extruder components based on the modular principle.

Description
- EP 565 184 A1 beschreibt Verfahren, in denen mittels Feststoffmischern bzw.
